No matter how well some things were thought through, after a while they can start feeling stale. With a new patch just around the corner, some Helldivers 2 players pointed out that the defense mission campaigns could really improve with some small changes and tweaks.

What’s Wrong With the Current Defense Mission Campaigns?

Devoted Helldivers gathered to explain what the current main problems were. One player, NizzyDeniro, shared their point of view. This player noted: “How defense missions work now doesn’t make any sense”.

They elaborated: “We take a planet but the enemy is already stationed there the same as liberation missions. They have bases, artillery, workshops, stations, etc. Since there’s virtually no difference between the two types of Campaigns, that leads to it feeling stale”.

This player wasn’t the only one to speak up. Archernar added: “The problem right now is anyway there is never a reason to defend as you’re better off just liberating the planet the attack is coming from”. Other players confirmed that it was usually way easier to let the enemies take the planet and liberate it than to defend it.

Helldivers 2 Player Suggests Some Needed Changes

Helpful as always, the most devoted Helldivers 2 players came up with some ideas for mission changes. The main idea was to make them as different as possible from liberation missions and to allow the players to enjoy some variety.

The OP explained: “Instead, Defense Campaigns should favor Super Earth to defend, like planets taken over by each faction that we’re trying to liberate. We should have SEAF bases with artillery, towers, etc. And to balance, just make defense missions challenging, with onslaughts of enemies. It’s about holding off the automatons from destroying every SEAF base on the map. Each base has a health bar. This can lead to more varied types of missions”.

According to OP, in a base defense mission, you should: “Defend SEAF bases in the region from being destroyed and taken over by enemy forces”. All while stopping them from destroying essential artillery. As for invasion missions, they suggested: “Destroy incoming enemy Warships/Spore Nests to stop their advance by prepping then activating anti-extraterrestrial weapons in the region to annihilate them”.

When talking about the sample extraction missions, this player stated: “Secure and extract samples from the Ministry of Science labs in the region before enemies extract them for themselves or destroy them. Deliver the samples to a rendez-vous point for extraction”.

As for capture missions, they suggested: “The Ministry of Science tasks Helldivers to tranquilize and extract specified Terminids. With the help of a specialized Pelican equipped with a Cage. Helldivers have a new Objective Stratagem, the Lullaby”.

Many players pointed out that changes like these would give the game some more freshness. Sure, new weapons and buffs are fantastic, but with the game becoming more and more stable, changes like these would contribute to storytelling. For Liberty and Super Earth.
