The Arrowhead team was a part of the recently finished G-Star Conference in Busan, South Korea. After the Arrowhead devs, Johan Pilestedt (the CCO) and Shams Jorjani (the CEO), ended their presentation, they sat down with a reporter for Inven webzine and gave a lengthy interview. In it, the Helldivers 2 devs revealed what made them re-think their approach to the game, as well as some juicy plans for the future.
Helldivers 2 Developers Share What Changed in Their Philosophy
Now, let’s start by saying that the devs covered a lot of very important topics, also keep in mind that this interview was written in Korean, so some names/terms were mistranslated. At the very beginning of the interview, the devs discussed what changed in their philosophy.
As you remember, the beginning of August was very rough for Helldivers 2 players (and devs), as the Escalation of Freedom update tanked. This was a wake-up call for the devs to actively start listening to the community. Johan Pilestedt revealed: “As I mentioned in the lecture, we realized through the ups and downs of 10 months that we need to focus on the community and listen to the gamers. Before we started the 60-day update, until the August update, we really didn’t know”.
Shams Jorjani elaborated on the topic and noted that some tough decisions were made. He said: “We reviewed all these comments and complaints and prioritized the tasks that we had to solve first. Adding new weapons, mechanics, and stratagems was necessary, but they were pushed back”.
However, don’t worry, later on, the devs talked about everything that was in the plans for the future of Helldivers 2. They explained how they were personally satisfied with the current condition of the game, but they’d continue improving it.
The devs mentioned the Democracy Space Station, which presents a new way for the fully upgraded players to spend their resources. Not only that, but the DSS will continue to expand and get new features, as early as this week.
Another thing that not many players counted on is possible cross-overs. Jorjani stated: “In addition to this, we are also planning crossovers (collaborations) with other IPs”. We’re sure Helldivers can’t wait for this.
The Devs Have a Lot of Exciting Plans for the Future
The devs shared their biggest revelations towards the end of the interview. Although there have been numerous leaks of the Illuminate, reportedly, they aren’t coming. Pilestedt said: “Uh… They were banished from the galaxy 100 years ago. They will never come back”. We have a hard time believing that!
As for one of the recently popular topics, the addition of vehicles, there is some good news. Even though they joked at first, the dynamic duo admitted that vehicles would arrive soon. Jorjani noted: “On a more serious note, vehicle updates are in the plans. It will be added soon, but I don’t think I can go into more detail than that”.
One more thing that surprised us was the mention of Chaosdivers, the unofficial “rebel faction”. Pilestedt stated: “We’re thinking about how to incorporate these “Chaos Divers” into the game now”. Given that this faction is still active months after it was created, it deserves some recognition.
Finally, saving the best for last, Pilestedt teased some new additions. He noted: “I am always grateful and will continue to provide great updates that make us forget all the disappointing things we have shown so far. Just one last thing to add, there are three big ones coming soon”.
Helldivers React to Future Plans
Truth be told, we found this interview refreshing and hopeful. Since the CEO and the CCO haven’t made any public announcements recently, this was a breath of fresh air, in our opinion. However, Helldivers 2 players weren’t all too sure how they felt about these plans for the future.
One player, kchunpong, reminded the community not to get their hopes up. They noted: “AH measurements are quite different to us, so please manage your expectations”. Another player, loulou9899, added: “Expectations: new planets, new enemy, new Stratagems. Reality: bug fix, DSS fix, fix fix”.
DarkomPD7 advised: “I don’t want to be a bringer of bad faith or something, but man, it would be nice if we don’t overhype this. Hyping things up is a real problem in this community, and in the end, people are just bitter/disappointed. Just let us wait for it and be surprised by what comes”.
That is some solid advice. We’d suggest you stay hopeful but remember that even if the devs issue some fixes and not new content, they are paving the way for the new content. According to leaks, a lot is yet to come. For Liberty and Managed Democracy.
