“Are They… Gone?” Helldivers 2 Players Have Seemingly Eradicated the Illuminate… Or Have They?

It’s been a long and exhilarating weekend for Helldivers. After a hundred years, the Illuminate made a comeback and immediately attacked Calypso. The Squids transformed unfortunate citizens into Voteless, but Helldivers were ready and fiercely defended the planet. After several days of fighting, and many casualties on both sides, Helldivers 2 players finally defeated the Illuminate, and the pesky Squids are once again gone.

The Squids Are Gone?

So, the Helldivers successfully completed the Major Order. As always, Joel gave the players a briefing following the MO. The briefing offered an explanation on the sudden return of the Illuminate.

It stated: “It is assessed that a small cell of the Illuminate forces survived their eradication at the end of the First Galactic War, staying hidden until now. Recent Democratic activity may have made their discovery imminent, precipitating the recent attack”.

Now, it will take a while for the remaining citizens of Calypso to recover, but at least they are safe from the Illuminate. The High Command is also investigating reports of human-like combatants, nicknamed the Voteless.

However, a question remains are the Illuminate truly gone this time, or will the Helldivers 2 players face them again? At the time of writing this article, there is no trace of the Squids on the Galactic Map, but stay vigilant, as that might be one of their mind tricks.

Helldivers Discuss Possible Scenarios With the Illuminate

Of course, the Helldivers 2 community had a lot to say about this sudden appearance and subsequent disappearance. Some players are quite sure that we all ruined the devs’ plans by managing to win this almost impossible defense. One player, ConferenceScary6622, joked: “Sorry Arrowhead, I know you spent all that money and time developing the Illuminate, but we defeated them so that means they can’t come back”.

Still, the majority of Helldivers know that this most likely isn’t the last time we cross swords with the Illuminate. Many suggested that the attack on Calypso was just a distraction so that other Squids could spread over the map unnoticed.

Sundarran noted: “I think the Illuminate wanted to draw us away to Calypso. Think about it, they emerged from the singularity. If all of them arrived through it at once, we would have turned every weapon we had against them. They sent a diversion to Calypso so the rest of their armada could slip through. Undemocratic squids sacrificing their own for their plans, how despicable”.

Others claim that the Illuminate were just assessing the Helldivers’ readiness. TheWhompingWampa suggested: “Ironically, I think we may have accidentally made it worse. That Vanguard was clearly testing our defenses and now they’ve escaped back to their hidden main force. They’re gonna know exactly how powerful we are and how hard they’ll have to push back. This is just the start, Divers”.

It would be hilarious if the Illuminate never showed their ugly heads again. However, we doubt that will happen, and we hope they’ll return for that leaked Special Event. Until then, we’ll be fighting filthy bugs and bots, will you join us? For Liberty and Super Earth.
