Following the incredibly disappointing Escalation of Freedom update, Arrowhead Game Studios announced a 60-day roadmap to rectify many of the issues that Helldivers 2 has been facing in recent months, from performance issues to reactionary updates nerfing many of the most popular weapons in the game. The first of these updates is set to go live next week and all signs point to the game getting back on track as the patch notes are said to be 6-8 pages long.
The Helldivers 2 Community Manager Twinbeard recently took to the official Discord server to address some concerns from players. “I think we need to view this as an important first step to us getting back to being aligned with what players want, there’s been a disconnect there,” he said.
“We can’t and won’t be able to and shouldn’t even please all. Again though, should the game prove itself to be too easy after this for a fair share of the player base, it should be easier to make it more difficult AND fun than it is to make it more fun and feel viable to a larger base now, without us buffing some stuff.”
Arrowhead has come under fire from the community for using nerfs as a way to make Helldivers 2 feel more difficult, but it ultimately resulted in the game becoming less enjoyable to play and players were left feeling frustrated.
Twinbeard further elaborated on the thought process of Arrowhead saying, “I think the one thing that trumps all at the moment is that we want to make the game more fun for a larger percentage of the player base. That’s number one. It has to be.”
“Having fun with your friends is what the game is all about. Adding to that, dynamics, variety, excitement, challenges, performance and stability and so on and so on.” Twinbeard concluded by stating that fun is the main focus of the new update saying that “Helldivers 2 has to be more of that over-the-top bombastic co-op action game than it has for some of late. We hope and think these initial changes will make the game more fun for a larger base of players, old and new. After that, we’ll evaluate and continue to polish.”
Although we are still a few days away from the 01.001.007 update going live, all signs point to it being a positive first step in Arrowhead rebuilding Helldivers 2 and hopefully regaining the trust of the community that will lead to the player base growing again. Recently, Helldivers 2 hit an all-time low player count when it fell below 7,000 concurrent players for the first time since the game was released back in February 2024.
