Here’s just how much worse the Sharp Tooth Shotgun is than the Pump in Fortnite

Fortnite fans were left divided after Epic Games vaulted the Kinetic Boomerang due to an issue with players losing control when rebooted.

In its place, the new Sharp Tooth Shotgun arrived, a fresh take on the popular pump action shotgun that has been vaulted and unvaulted more times than we can remember over the course of Fortnite’s life cycle. While the new weapon includes extended range, making it far more versatile than your typical short-range gun, it doesn’t take much to see that this weapon has actually been significantly nerfed. Let’s take a closer look at the stats.

Pump shotgun v Sharp Tooth Shotgun

We’ve looked into a number of variables to see how the two weapons compare, and it’s clear the pump shotgun is the winner. Before diving in, please note that the below comparison is between Legendary (Gold) variants of the weapon.

When we look at the damage profile, you’re seeing a reduction from the Pump Shotgun’s 128 to 119. Elsewhere, DPS has taken a hit while the spread of fire has also become more linear – meaning hip-fire will need to be more accurate. We’ve also looked at fire rate, and can confirm there is a slight decrease in fire speed that favors the pump shotgun, but this is not noticeable enough to cause any significant issues.

But it’s the other elements that are perhaps even more concerning. A reload speed decrease of around 10% combined with fewer shells in the chamber make the gun far more dangerous to wield. You essentially have four chances to take down a target, compared with 5 – before being hit with a slow reload time. This means you’ve decreased your error-shot ratio by around 20%. Here are the stats in full:

Damage: 119 – 128
DPS: 81 – 90
Reload time: 4.05s – 3.7s
Magazine size: 4 – 5

But it’s not all bad news. The Sharp Tooth Shotgun deals more damage to structures (89 vs. 55 for the Pump) and it can also deal damage from a distance, unlike many other shotguns. Therefore, while its damage profile makes it far less effective a short-range, it does seem to balance this with versatility across mid-range and long-range engagements.

Still, not many gamers will be wanting to take a shotgun into a long range battle – so the gun risks not finding a home amongst an already crowded armory where other more specific options perform better at certain ranges. This, combined with its small magazine and crippling re-load speed makes the Sharp Tooth more bark than bite.
