Fortnite Fans Wonder if the Recent Movie Flop Is a Final Nail in the Coffin for Borderlands Skins

Collaborations are the bread and butter of Fortnite cosmetics. Sure, there are Fortnite originals and players are fond of them, but the collab skins are arguably the most popular. Those collaborations can be with pop stars, streamers, movies, other games, you name it. But, the general nature of show business is volatile, and what is popular today may be forgotten tomorrow, due to a flop, scandal, or anything similar.

On that last note, Borderlands, a popular video game series, has collaborated with Epic and Fortnite in the past and that’s how we got the Psycho Bandit skin. However, we also got the official release of the Borderlands movie a couple of days ago, and the results are, well, pretty bad.

Will the Movie’s Failure Affect Fortnite x Borderlands?

The Borderlands movie turned out to be a massive flop, so Fortnite fans are afraid that they won’t be seeing Psycho Bandit and Claptrap in the shop ever again. Add the fact that it’s been four years since we last saw them, and the prospect is not that great.

Fortnite fans on Reddit have started discussing whether the movie has any impact on the whole deal. Some were hoping that the skin would be back for the movie’s release like Diggleflort saying: “I was hopeful all last week, but it looks like it’s a big no. Only skin I regret not getting.” and entropy_is_cool added: “I wish they made a borderlands skin or two to promote the movie..”

There Is More To It

A lot of players state that Borderlands as a franchise is too great to be brought down by one movie. User Dgero466 said: “…not solely due to the movie. Take 2’s CEO said that the movie failing wouldn’t financially affect them, then again they didn’t delve into if it would affect them in other ways.”

Others had more concrete answers, like 20-minute-jackal who stated: “Psycho wasn’t coming back whether the movie failed or succeeded. There was no new contract between Epic and Gearbox to return any Borderlands items back to the shop.” Furthermore, Extrimland thinks that it’s not a problem with Borderlands, but rather with video game skins in general. “Well tbf, they rarely bring back Video Game skins in general, despite the fact many of them are among the most beloved skins in the game, and it’s generally agreed upon to be the best rarity…Not sure if it’s a licensing issue or Epic just not liking do these collabs but, they have always been heavily neglected.”

The positive note is that Borderlands 4 seems to be on the way and Epic may use that opportunity to bring back Psycho Bandit to the shop (if they still have the contract, that is).
