Games like Fallout 4 have many important mechanics, and even if it does not seem so at first glance, waiting to rest up is one of them. Passing the time can be integral to healing wounds, ridding oneself of negative status effects, or waiting for a specific shop to open. Unlike other Bethesda games like Skyrim, where you could simply press the button at any time to start the waiting period, in Fallout 4, players need to work a bit to get a rest.

How to Wait in Fallout 4

Fallout 4 uses a similar ‘Wait’ mechanic to other Bethesda games, with few notable differences. Unlike other games where you can press one key to start the waiting process, in Fallout 4, players have to find a safe space to rest. Resting cannot be started while a player is in a dangerous situation, like having enemies around or being exposed to radiation.

Once in a public and safe space, players must use a chair, couch, or another similar item to start the waiting process. This piece of furniture can be one found in the world or one that the player has crafted. The option to press the Wait button will appear only if the selected area is one that the player can rest in. Upon clicking the button, a prompt will appear where players can choose the amount of time they wish to spend waiting.

Why wait and pass the time in Fallout 4?

Although it sounds simple, waiting is important to restore the player’s health and stamina. Moreover, many things in Fallout 4 depend on the time of day, like the working hours of certain shopkeepers. Additionally, some perks players can pick while levelling up grant bonuses during specific hours of the day.

Waiting has an additional side effect when used in Survival Mode – it can prevent damage from hunger, thirst, and disease. This can be very useful, especially if there is time to wait until your food restocks while you are starving. Additionally, players can use the Wait function to skip over the worst parts of a disease. Using the Wait mechanic, players can skip over until the effects of a disease have run their course without suffering any damage.

With everything we’ve outlined above in mind, it’s obvious that resting with the Wait mechanic is important when playing Fallout 4. Make sure to always keep a sensible resting point in mind while exploring the wasteland, so you’re never caught off-guard.
