Fans of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion are in for a treat as they will have both the official Remaster and the Skyblivion mod to play with in 2025.
Imagine working on a project for years, and when you are about to release it, someone takes the spotlight. You’d think that the folks behind the Skyblivion mod would get extremely frustrated when the rumors of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remaster started circling, but nothing can be further from the truth. The Skyblivion team even commented on the official remaster, saying that they are excited for it as everyone else is, and that there is nothing wrong with having two similar-yet-different toys to play with. And the players think the same.
Having Both The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion Remaster and Skyblivion Can Only Be Beneficial for the Community
Comparison is the thief of joy, and when the official remaster was ”announced” (via rumors, leaks, and finally, the official teaser), you’d expect that a war would break out between Bethesda and Skyblivion supporters. But, as it turns out, the gaming community is excited for the official remaster, and still very much interested in Skyblivion mod. While they can be considered basically the same thing, they have some notable differences.
On the technical side, the official remaster is done using the Unreal Engine 5, while the Skyblivion is made using the Creation Engine (the one Skyrim uses). So there is something to everyone’s liking. As for the content, one is made by a team of passionate players, with their own views and ideas on the game, while the other is an official project by a well-funded studio. They both have their merits. One is made by the player for the players, while the other has access to better technology and more options. That is not to say that the Remake is not made by a dedicated dev team, it’s just that their approaches would be slightly different. Which is a great thing, as the players would have the option to choose which one they prefer.
“Honestly, I loved the original Oblivion so I’m very excited for both the remaster and Skyblivion. It’ll be intriguing to compare these three versions of the game though; not from a quality perspective but stylistically as the different teams will inherently have unique approaches, preferences, etc.” commented one player, while another added: “It’ll be great to have multiple opportunities to play Oblivion afresh with modern gaming’s capabilities, to see it approached from different angles.”
Fans May Lean a Bit More Towards Skyblivion
Unsurprisingly, while the gaming community is excited for both the Remaster and Skyblivion, it looks like they are slightly leaning towards the latter. Which is not surprising, as lately, the gamers have more trust in fan-made projects than big companies. Many of them agree that Skyblivion and the hype around it is partially responsible for the remake.
“Something tells me that the team behind Skyblivion is partially (if not entirely) to thank for the prospect of an official remake. The massive support that this project has had over the years thanks to your hard work and dedication was a clear sign that this is something that Elder Scrolls fans wanted.” said Angelikatosh.
Bethesda is usually supportive when it comes to fan projects. Hopefully, they will remain as they are and not decide to take action against Skyblivion, after the official release of the Remake. That would create such a community backlash that they would never recover from.
