Doom: The Dark Ages is one of the most anticipated titles of the year. However, we found out that Doom The Dark Ages won’t have multiplayer, and read on to see why that’s a good thing.
The latest installment in the ever-popular DOOM series, The Dark Ages will take the story to a dark medieval setting, where the legendary Doom Slayer is fighting demons using a vast variety of medieval, but still very much Doom-like, weapons. From the Saw Shield and the double-barrel shotgun to the already famous “Skull Crusher”, you’ll have a truly appropriate weapon for every situation. But, will you be able to use those weapons on other players? Doom games practically began the whole online multiplayer shooter phenomenon, but will the latest title have online multiplayer?
No Multiplayer in Doom The Dark Ages
In a Q&A session, held during the recent Xbox Live event, the folks over at Eurogamer report that the devs said that Doom The Dark Ages won’t feature any multiplayer. The goal is to focus on providing the best and most epic campaign possible.
“We made that decision early so we could really just go all in on the campaign. It’s our largest, most expansive, most epic campaign ever, and we’re just really happy with the decision. It’s been awesome to have the team focused just on polishing and finishing the campaign.” said Marty Stratton, the executive producer of Doom: The Dark Ages.
“That’s why we were able to put the dragon and the Atlan [mech] in. I mean, these are things we wanted to do in the game for, like, multiple games now, but couldn’t, because we had a multiplayer component – which we loved – but really, it was meant to just focus on the single player campaign and just level up that experience for players.” added game director Hugo Martin.
Doom games have always been more of a single-player affair, so taking away from the campaign to add a multiplayer mode would most likely not have a good result. This is a very smart decision by id Software. And they can probably add the multiplier mode in the future if the demand proves to be high enough.
