Diablo 4 character key art

Diablo 4 has many ways of getting some extra damage done and Overpower is one of them. This article will explain what is Overpower damage in Diablo 4 and how best to use it. Read on.

As with every respectable aRPG, Diablo has more than one way of increasing the damage you deal. There is the usual Critical Damage, and there is Overpower. It’s a similar mechanic but quite unique in its own way. You have probably noticed that sometimes the damage you deal is in blue numbers. That means that Overpower has triggered for that attack. But how did that happen and why?

Overpower Damage Explained

In short, Overpower is a bonus damage mechanic that has a fixed chance to activate, and deals bonus damage based on your Life and Fortify. Let’s dive into this in more detail. First, Overpower has a fixed chance to trigger, it’s always 3%. There is no way of improving that, at least for now. But, some Classes, namely Barbarian, Druid, and Necromancer, have ways of setting up a guaranteed Overpower. They are also the only Classes that have the means to stack Fortify, so that makes them the only ones that can use Overpower effectively. Next, Overpower only triggers for direct-damage attacks and Skills. It will not trigger for damage-over-time, passive abilities, and Channeled skills (like Barbarian’s Whirlwind).

Now, how much damage does Overpower actually do? Overpower is not improved by anything that affects your Critical Damage, it is a completely separate mechanic. Rather, it deals bonus damage based on your Life and Fortify amounts. So the beefier your character is, the greater your Overpower damage is. The base bonus damage is 50% of your Life and Fortify, but that can be improved. Note that, as they are separate mechanics, Overpower and Critical can trigger at the same time (represented by orange numbers) for a combined effect.

How to Improve Overpower Damage Bonus in Diablo 4?

The most straightforward way of improving the Overpower bonus is increasing your Willpower Stat. As this is the base Stat for Druids, they will get the most out of it. Each point of Willpower increases the bonus by 0.25%. Also, you can find gear that improves your Overpower bonus. And lastly, Rubies are Gems that improve your Overpower bonus when socketed into weapons.
