While playing Diablo IV, one thing that we found confusing was how to switch weapons as a Barbarian, one of the many classes you can play. We couldn’t figure out if it was possible to change weapons manually or if it was skill-specific. Finally, we learned how switching weapons works as a Barbarian, so let’s explain how to use the different weapons in your arsenal.
Diablo 4 – How to Switch Weapons as a Barbarian, Explained
To switch weapons as a Barbarian in Diablo 4 is entirely based on what skills you use, but you can manually change to specific weapons it uses if you so wish. However, this may be pretty pointless since Diablo 4 will automatically select the best weapon for the skill. This means that there’s less effort in micromanaging weapon types and weapon swaps which you can put into mindless killing and destruction.
The Barbarian can equip four weapons at once:
- Two-Handed Bludgeoning
- Two-Handed Slashing
- Two One-Handed Weapons for Dual Wielding
For example, when a Barbarian uses the Frenzy skill, they will dual-wielded one-handed swords, but when using Lunging Strike, they used a two-handed hammer. Yet for Lunging Strike, if you want to, you could change it to use two one-handed swords. But not that some skills are locked to certain weapons, however.
Diablo 4 – How To Change Weapons as a Barbarian on PC
To change weapons as a Diablo 4 Barbarian on Diablo 4 PC, follow these instructions:
- Open up the Abilities Tab.
- When in the Skill Tree, hover over any unlocked skill.
- Press the Middle Mouse button to cycle between eligible weapons.
Diablo 4 – How To Change Weapons as a Barbarian on Console
To change weapons as a Barbarian on Diablo 4 console version, follow these instructions for Xbox and PlayStation:
- Open up the Abilities Tab.
- Use the left analog stick to select your unlocked skill.
- Press in L3 (press in the analog stick) to open the customize menu.
- Press X to swap between eligible weapons.
You may be wondering why would you want to change which weapons you use as a Barbarian. The answer is pretty straightforward, especially if you’re in the end game and dialling in your build. Depending on your main skills, you may want a certain weapon to apply its effects, such as a Lucky Hit result. That could be impossible if your “stat stick” happens to have higher damage.
So the trade-off is that you deal marginally more damage, but lose out on effects that are core to your build. Note this applies to equipping new weapons, not swapping weapons during attacks. This is handled automatically, so you do not need to micromanage this.
