After over a decade’s wait, we’ve finally got ourselves Dead Island 2. With its unique comedic twist on zombie-fueled carnage, it has received much (understandable) hype from fans eagerly awaiting the title’s release. With an extensive looting and modification system, coupled with the free-roam map, the game can be an overwhelming experience for newcomers and returning fans.
1. Don’t Worry Too Much About Choosing Your Slayer
You can choose from a total of 6 characters when starting your Dead Island 2 playthrough. Each of these characters, or slayers, has unique stats and abilities (as well as personality) that differentiate them from the rest. Subsequently, this affects your playstyle to some extent.
However, we suggest not overthinking this decision, since the differences between abilities can be resolved as your character levels up and learns the alternate skills.
2. Get a Good Early Game Weapon
While this tip may sound obvious, finding a decent weapon early on is annoyingly difficult. These generally start spawning around level 10. To get around this, look for lockboxes on the map, which require a key to be opened. This key is acquired by killing certain named zombies, a potentially daunting task.
Alternatively, an easier way to get your hands on a good early-game weapon is by killing the Drill Sergeant that spawns on your way back once you’ve completed your mission in Halperin Hotel. Kill him to get the key to a nearby military supply case, giving you access to a rare headhunter-type military knife.

3. Don’t Forget to Loot
It becomes apparent quite soon after you start that looting is a core part of Dead Island 2’s gameplay. What’s easy to miss is that many paths are unlocked once you’ve progressed in the story (usually via zombies bursting through a door). So once you’ve cleared the zombies out, make sure to go back and check for any loot you might have missed.
Of course, this also includes looting any safes of lockboxes you find keys for, as these usually host some of the best weapons and mods in the game.
4. Keep Health Kits With You
The kits, besides being a convenient means to earn some fast cash, are incredibly effective at fulfilling what they do. In terms of their proficiency in use, these kits are undeniably reliable and provide immediate results. By utilizing these kits, players can quickly recover a sizable portion of their lost health.
Moreover, these health kits provide additional benefits by neutralizing any detrimental status effects that players might be afflicted with. As a result, if a player is experiencing fire, burns, or electric shocks due to the use of elemental modifications, the kits will entirely remove these, restoring them to their optimal condition.

5. Experiment With Different Weapons
Early on in the game, you will go through several different Common and Uncommon weapons as you rapidly encounter stronger and stronger enemies requiring you to use even stronger weapons.
Once you start obtaining Rare and Superior weapons, stick with the type you like. Not only will you really solidify your established playstyle, but you will also get to modify the weapons you love, having them give elemental or further physical damage, thus making mowing down hordes of zombies just that much easier. Plus, upgrading weapons repairs them, too, saving you money and making sure your favorite weapon lasts you longer.
6. Get the Fuses
Some of the most exciting weapons and rare crafting materials are locked behind doors that only unlock with fuses. You can only get fuses from vendors for a hefty price of $1500 each. Expensive, yes, but well worth the money considering what it unlocks.
However, money is probably tight early on, and for that, we suggest selling the First Aid Kits for a hundred bucks each since you can only have up to 5 at a time anyway. Don’t forget to sell any scrap or crafting materials you don’t need as well. Both of these are found plenty in the world, so don’t worry about running low on materials.
7. Yes, You Can Fast Travel
Fast travel is usually one of the more highlighted features of an open-world game, but it is surprisingly easy to miss in Dead Island 2. Not available from the start, you must complete the main story until The Red Mist quest to unlock it.
Once unlocked, you’ll need to interact with the Fast Travel map of that region physically to use the feature. Some of these maps’ locations include Roxanne’s House (Beverly Hills), Janitor’s Office (Halperin Hotel), and Emma’s Mansion (Bel-Air). Make sure to go back to previous areas, as you can find new loot, weapons, and quests.
