Clair Obscur has quite a lot of memorable dialogues, but there is one that is close to everyone’s hearts. On that note, the lead writer of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Jennifer Svedberg-Yen, revealed how the fan-favorite dialogue came to be.

Writing stories can be hard work. We’ve all written something at some point, be it a DnD adventure or a high school play. Now, imagine writing a story for a game with 60+ hours of content. Movie scripts are difficult enough, and this is like dozens of movie scripts added together. Even the best writers get tired and pull late-nighters. Surprisingly enough, it is just how one of the most memorable scenes in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 came to be.

“I too am ‘Whooo.’ But I’m also ‘Wheee!’” Lead Writer Revealed How the Fan-Favorite Dialogue in Clair Obscur Expedition 33 Came to Be

In an interview with Polygon, Jennifer Svedberg-Yen revealed how the absolute best dialogue between Verso and Esquie came to be. During one of the earlier camp dialogues between the two of them, they discuss how Francois, Esquie’s turtle-friend and neighbour, is in a bit of a down. Jennifer revealed that she wrote that scene in the late hours of the night. She knew what she wanted to say with it, but just couldn’t find the right words.

“That was me at three in the morning trying to come up with something. I needed to write seven relationship dialogues for Esquie! I knew what I wanted to say, where it’s talking about something heavy and sad and how you can feel the joy and the grief. And I was so tired. I didn’t have any words. So I was just like, ‘wheeeeee!’” said Svedberg-Yen.

You can get extreme moments on unexpected brilliance at 3am, and this only proves the point. Jenifer says that for the game and the character to feel real, she took inspiration from her own life and the world around her, so it would feel authentic. For example, Monoco is based on her dog, and the whole dialogue between him and Verso about haircuts really did happen (with Monoco the dog being slightly less talkative, we presume). “‘You look like an overgrown mop.’ I literally said that to my dog — and I could use that.”

Characters in Clair Obscur are one of the strongest points of the game. They really do feel a bit more “human” than we usually see in games today, and we couldn’t put our finger on as to why, until now.
