Do you need to upgrade your roads to increase traffic efficiency? Then this guide will teach you how to upgrade your roads in Cities Skylines 2.
Maintaining you road network as you city grows is key to avoiding bottlenecks. Traffic management is important to prevent your city falling into ruin. People wouldn’t be able to get anywhere, causing unhappiness in your population. So as your city grows, you’ll want to upgrade some of the roads, improving their quality or adding lanes to them. This was possible in the previous version of the game as well, and now is even easier in Cities Skylines 2. Let’s dig into the topic and explain how to do it.
- Deep Simulation: Make choices that have ripple effects across the city. Intricate AI and economic systems mean players will need to strategize, problem solve and react to changes, challenges and opportunities.
- Epic Scale, Endless Possibilities: Build a thriving metropolis without compromise. In Cities: Skylines II, players will be able to build sky-high and across the map to realize their dream city like never before.
- Cities That Come Alive: Follow the lives of individual citizens, from love and loss to wealth and well-being. Player decisions will shape the lives of their city’s citizens.
- A Dynamic World: Pick a map to set the climate and biome of the city. These natural forces will shape the growth of players’ cities as they contend with rising pollution, changeable weather and seasonal challenges.

Methods to Upgrade Roads in Cities Skylines 2
It’s pretty simple to upgrade your roads in Cities Skylines 2. Select the road tool and pick the road you want to upgrade to. Then, click on the node you wish to start upgrading from and drag across the length until you’re satisfied. Essentially, just like you would build a new road, only on top of an old one. The road’s direction will follow the direction you build it in, so make sure it’s the correct facing.
If the road you’re upgrading to is wider than the original road, the zoning around it will be amended. That usually means that the surrounding buildings will have to be torn down. The dezoning in this instance will happen automatically, with new buildings soon springing up to replace the old ones. More importantly, the upgraded roads will enable your traffic to flow smoother than before. In case that there are any service buildings that are in the way, you will have to select and move them away manually.
