There is always something going on with BG3. Larian keeps updating the game bit by bit, and the community is all over the place, sharing and comparing their adventures, Tavs, successes, failures, and everything in between. Additionally, it is not unheard of for the community to band together and create their of challenges. One such challenge is taking over the scene by storm, related to a beloved fantasy series. So, let’s see what is the “Frodo Challenge” in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Frodo Challenge – The Latest Baldur’s Gate 3 Trend
There is a new challenge in the BG 3 community where you make your Tav to look like Frodo Baggins from The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The goal is to recreate the “Frodo experience”, to protect him during the whole adventure, so he can destroy a Ring at the end of the story. The exact details of the challenge are as follows.
The BG3 Frodo Challenge
- Rules
- 1. Honor Mode
- 2. Custom Tav – Halfling Rogue, Frodo Look-alike (More Or Less)
- 3. Never Level Up Your Frodo.
- 4. Frodo Always In Team (Never Separate)
- 5. Other Team Members – Whatever You Choose.
- 6. If Frodo Dies, You Failed.
- Goals
- 1. Asap Get The “Magic Ring” From Mattis For Frodo.
- 2. Frodo Must Throw This Ring In The Chasm Below The Very Final Part Of The Very Final Fight
- 3. Frodo Can Only Use A Weapon With “Shortsword” In Its Name
For a little clarification, Frodo Baggins is one of the main characters in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, one of the (if not THE) best fantasy stories ever. He’s a Hobbit (the original concept for Halflings that we have in DnD, and in BG3, today) tasked with destroying The One Ring by throwing it into a specific volcano, named Orodruin (or Mt. Doom, in the common tongue). Frodo is protected by a Fellowship of various other characters of which we won’t go into more detail. Suffice it to say that it is one of the first works that popularized the concept of an “Adventuring Party” that we all know and love today.
Most of the rules and goals are pretty self-explanatory and sensible, though a lot of the fans have a problem with point No. 3. But it depends on how you first got introduced to the story: books or movies. In the movies, Frodo is shown as pretty meek and passive (contrary to the books, where he’s much more active and tougher, even striking a nasty hit against a Cave Troll’s foot). Hence the reasoning behind point No. 3.
As for the goals, to emulate LOTR, you have to get the Lucky Magic Ring from Mattis in Act 1 and carry it all the way to the final battle, before which you must cast it into the fire, ie, throw it into a chasm, right before the final battle with the Netherbrain. Another fact is that Frodo carries a short enchanted blade called Sting, so in this challenge, you are limited to only using Shortswords.
Frodo & Sam Challenge
To better emulate the books, fans proposed a tweak to the original challenge. Frodo is always accompanied by his faithful companion, Samwise Gamgee, who does most of the heavy lifting, at least in the movies. So, in “Frodo & Sam Challenge”, your Tav (following all the aforementioned rules) is accompanied by another Halfling, called Sam. He’s allowed to level up as usual and people recommend that he should be a Devotion Paladin. So it boils down to two characters trying to get to the end of it all, just like in the story.
The Fans Easily Find Loopholes
What almost everyone notices pretty fast is that this can easily be done by using Santuary, or having a ton of Invisibility potions. Granted, The One Ring does make the wearer invisible in “our world”, so it is fitting. But it can get stale after a while and that’s why some fans recommend “banning” those spells, to make stuff more interesting.
But, even though you can bypass the rules with some spells and “hack the system”, the point of this challenge is to pay homage to Lord of the Rings and will be greatly appreciated by the fans of the trilogy (we’re considering reinstalling BG3 just for this).
