What is the Strange Ox in Baldur’s Gate 3?
Strange Ox is an animal you keep seeing in all three Acts of Baldur’s Gate 3. It requires some Insight and Arcana checks, as well as the ability to Speak With Animals, so better make sure you have those primed and available. If executed correctly, the Strange Ox will take you down a weird path. Bear in mind that this article contains some mild spoilers, so be warned.
Where to Find The Strange Ox in Baldur’s Gate 3?
- Act One
In the first Act, you can find the Strange Ox in The Hollow section of Druid’s Grove. Passing near him prompts an Insight check, and if passed, you can further roll an Arcana check to confirm that something is not right with this Ox. If you have some ability to Speak With Animals, now is the time to use it. If you do, it will tell you that it’s on its way to Baldur’s Gate. Cute, but weird.
- Act Two
Provided that you haven’t murdered the poor animal in Act 1, you can find the Strange Ox in the stables of The Last Light Inn. You need to pass an Insight check once again to recognize it, and you can continue the conversation you started in Druid’s Grove. You will be prompted to pass a Persuasion, Perception, or Nature check, and if successful, you’ll be granted some disturbing visions. If you ask about the nature of the Strange Ox and continue pushing it, the Ox will become agitated. If you do not stop, he will turn into an ooze-like monster and attack you. So maybe better to leave it alone.
- Act Three
If you did not attack and kill the Strange Ox until Act Three, you can find it near Rivington, on a hill west of the barn. Once again, you will need to pass an Insight check and have the ability to Speak With Animals to continue this. Once again, if you push him about his true nature, he will turn hostile. If not, you’ll get the Help the Devilish Ox quest.

Helping the Ox
Help the Devilish Ox quest is quite easy to do. If you accept it, the Strange Ox will transform into a Strange Apple (as all Oxen do, I guess) and ask to be brought to the Lower City. Once you get there it will disappear from your inventory, leaving you an IOU note, and a Shapeshifter’s Boon Ring.
But, the Strange Ox stays true to its word and comes back to help you out in the Final Battle.
Fighting the Strange Ox in BG3
If, for some reason, you decide to attack the Ox, or agitate it enough for it to become hostile, it will transform into an ooze-like monster. It will fight until dead and its attacks deal a lot of Acid damage. Once defeated, it will drop a Glyph that will explode for even more Acid damage. If you manage to survive all that, you will get the Shapeshifter’s Boon Ring, Hat of Fire Acuity (note that if you attack it in Act 1 and win, you’ll only get the Ring), and some Gems.
All in all, if you are not too keen on the Hat, better to just play along and be on friendly terms with the Ox and help it out.
