The fight with Nere is one of the toughest ones in Act 1, and players do their best to make it as easy as possible. However, one Baldur’s Gate 3 player comes up with a clever plan and reveals a trick to get to Nere without triggering the huge fight, saving all the Gnomes in the process.
Grymforge is usually the final area you clear in the first Act. One of the toughest fights there is the Golem at the Adamantine Forge and Dark Elf Nere with his Duergar henchmen. The latter is considered the harder of the two, as the Golem may be more dangerous, but it has a simple mechanic. As for Nere, he’s a powerful spellcaster, and the Duergar are dangerous in their own right. Moreover, Nere has a couple of Gnomes enslaved that players try time and time again to save, especially Meerna, who dies in the cutscene before the fight begins. But, one dedicated player managed to do so and has shared their clever trick on YouTube.
A Player Reveals a Trick How to Save All the Gnomes and Get to Nere Alone in Baldur’s Gate 3
One player, named Kay Allan on YouTube, managed to outplay the game and get to the gas-filled chamber where Nere is, without triggering the fight. Many fans wanted to see how it works, and Kay Allen made a video and shared it on YouTube for everyone to see.
It focuses on making a “box tower” (a fan-favorite solution to a lot of problems) in a certain area of Grymforge (near the lava rivers/waterfall (lavafall?) in the Ancient Temple, where the huge cogwheel is, south of the Ancient Forge Waypoint), climbing it by jumping, using Fly or Misty Step, and then Misty stepping again to a broken bridge, which is the “endpoint” of Nere’s chamber.
From there you can get to Nere from behind, but remember that the chamber is full of poisonous gas, so casting Gust of Wind or something similar is highly recommended. As it turns out, Nere will not react to you being there, so you can easily nuke him.
It is worth noting that, even with the OP using mods in their playthrough, no mods are necessary for this trick. The saddest part with this is, as you are most likely trying to save all the Gnomes, the OP says that the game does not recognize Meerna as being alive, even though the cutscene never happened and she was never pushed into lava.
In any case, this is a great way to avoid a tough fight and save all the Gnomes in the process. Who cares that the game does not recognize it, you know you did a good deed. And kudos to Kay Allan for sharing this cool trick with the community.
