Did you know that there is a magical mirror that can improve your stats? Read on to see how to use the Mirror of Loss to improve your stats in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Baldur’s Gate is an award-winning RPG from Larian Studios. It became a huge success soon after its release. It is no surprise, as it is full of content, quests, and mysteries. One wrong step and you can easily miss some awesome plotlines. On that note, there is a mysterious mirror that you come across on your adventures. Only by carefully choosing your dialogue options and passing some difficult Skill Checks can you unravel its mysteries. Let’s see what that is all about. Let’s see how to use the Mirror of Loss to improve your stats in Baldur’s Gate 3.

How to Use the Mirror of Loss?

The Mirror of Loss will call for some difficult Skill Checks, but passing them will lead to some great rewards. When you approach and interact with it, choose the Arcana option: ”Study the Mirror. Try to grasp its true nature.” This will call for a DC 25 Arcana check. Be sure to buff up your Intelligence and use everything you can (like Bardic Inspiration) to improve your chances.

Once passed, choose the Religion option: “Offer a prayer to the mirror.” This will call for a DC 25 Religion check. Once again, prepare yourself for this. Remember that you can save the game and reload until you pass the check (unless you’re playing in Honor Mode).

Once both checks are passed, you can offer up some memories (ability points) in exchange for new ones. You can give up on:

  • “Offer up memories of your strength – times when you triumphed, thanks to your raw power.” (-2 Strength)
  • “Give up memories of your youth, when your heart was carefree and your limbs were nimble.” (-2 Dexterity)
  • “Relinquish memories of fortitude and well-being, when body and mind held fast against all challenges.” (-2 Constitution)
  • “Surrender valued knowledge gleaned from books, scrolls, and tablets… words that left a mark on your mind, but no more.” (-2 Intelligence)
  • “Let go of some wisdoms that time has bestowed upon you – old wounds, tough lessons, and fond memories alike.” (-2 Wisdom)
  • “Give away memories of when your charm stood to you – the applause of the swayed, the smiles of the beguiled, the kisses of the seduced.” (-2 Charisma)

This will grant you a semi-permanent condition of a -2 penalty on your chosen ability score. Once those memories (points) are lost, you will then be offered new ones, that will grant you a bonus.

  • “Claim memories of strength from a long-dead general, who marched under the banner of a vanished kingdom.” (+2 Strength)
  • “Help yourself to the memories of a seasoned thief’s most daring exploits.” (+2 Dexterity)
  • “Seize the memories of a barbarian, whose mind and body were tempered against hardship.” (+2 Constitution)
  • “Glean the secrets of a wizard who once stalked the libraries of Candlekeep.” (+2 Intelligence)
  • “Turn to the wisdom of a drow. Once of Lothe, then or Shar.” (+2 Wisdom)
  • “Warm to the guile of a bard who could charm even a dragon “ (+2 Charisma)

Not you have a permanent +2 bonus on one stat and a semi-permanent -2 penalty on another. What does that semi-permanent penalty mean?

It is possible to remove the penalty while keeping the bonus you gained from the Mirror. Simply cast a Remove Curse spell (Gale or Shadowheart should have access to it) and it will remove the -2 penalty while keeping the +2 bonus. It’s a win-win situation. Note that this +2 bonus can take your Ability score up to 24.

Where to Find the Mirror of Loss in Baldur’s Gate 3?

You’ll first come across a Mirror of Loss in the Gauntlet of Shar, in Act Two of the game. Unfortunately, it is broken and cannot be used, but there is a book called Reflections Upon the Mirror of Loss that gleans some info and lore about it.

What you are looking for is in Act Three. The Mirror of Loss is located in The Chamber of Loss, underneath the House of Grief. House of Grief is located in the northwest corner of the Lower City of Baldur’s Gate. It is also a part of Shadowheart’s personal quest, so you should bring her along.
