Baldur’s Gate 3 is practically the best RPG we recently got. It combines fun gameplay with an unforgettable story and awesome NPCs. There are a lot of fights in the game, and playing smart is essential to winning. But, playing smart will only get you so far. You also need some powerful gear in order to come out on top of every encounter. During your travels, you will come across pieces of magic items, and putting them together will give you some powerful gear. Mourning Frost is a cool magic staff, but some assembly is required. Read on to see how to craft Mourning Frost staff in Baldur’s Gate 3.

How to Craft the Mourning Frost Staff in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Crafting the Mourning Frost staff is quite easy. Simply take all the pieces, right-click on one of them, and select the Combine option. Put all three pieces together and you have assembled the Mourning Frost staff.

That said, actually getting the pieces is the tricky part. Thankfully, all of them are in the Underdark. The pieces in question are Icy Crystal, Icy Metal, and Icy Helve, so let’s see where you can find them.

Icy Helve

The handle, Icy Helve, is in the possession of Dhorun, a Drow petrified by a Spectator. They are located west of Selunite Outpost in the Underdark. You will see a group of petrified Drows, and as you approach them, a Spectator will appear and fight you. If he un-petrifies Dhorun, he will still be Charmed, and dealing any damage to him may remove the effect. If so, Dhorun will fight on your side against the Spectator. Remember that Vision of the Absolute is a great weapon against Spectators

Once the fight is over, try to convince Dhorun to hand over the Icy Helve. If negotiations go south, simply dispatch him and his band and loot them. Note that if he falls over the cliff and into the abyss, the Mourning Frost piece is gone forever, so make sure to move away from the cliff edges.

Icy Metal

You get Icy Metal as a reward for defeating some Duergar that are threatening the Myconid Colony. Enter the Myconid Colony, speak to their ‘Sovereign” and it will give you the ‘Protect the Myconid Circle’ quest. To complete it, you have to defeat a band of Duergar, located near the Underdark – Beach Waypoint. Once done, return to turn in the quest. As a reward, Myconids will point you to their treasury, where a Pale Corpse is lying on the ground. Icy Metal is in its possession, so simply loot the corpse and it’s yours.

Icy Crystal

The third piece is in the possession of Filro the Forgotten, a Drow located at the Sussur Tree in the Underdark. Sussur Tree is in the west of the Underdark and is protected by Hook Horrors. Filro the Forgotten is on the branches of the Tree, so if you tackle this head-on, prepare for a fight with Filro and Hook Horrors. Note that pushing him off the branches may lead to him falling beyond reach, and taking the Icy Crystal with him, making the assembly of the Mourning Frost impossible.

If you are so inclined, you can try the stealthy approach, with Invisibility and similar abilities. If you get to Filro the Forgotten this way, simply pickpocket him and take the Icy Crystal for yourself.

What is Mourning Frost Staff?

Mourning Frost is a magic quarterstaff, with a +1 Weapon Enchantment that deals an additional 1d4 Cold damage. It has two abilities that amplify your Cold Spells:

  • Heart of Ice: When dealing Cold damage, the wielder deals an additional 1 Cold damage.
  • Insidious Cold: Dealing Cold damage with a spell possibly inflicts Chilled (Chilled enemies are Vulnerable to Cold Damage and Resistant to Fire damage) upon the target.

Finally, it grants the Ray of Frost Cantrip to the wielder.
