Baldur’s Gate 3 is an award-winning fantasy RPG that stormed the scene. Some players love it for the gameplay, others enjoy the incredible storyline. It’s no wonder, since basically every part of the game, every nook and cranny, every sidequest has been done to the finest detail. And, naturally, you have to be careful, as every decision you make can have consequences, leading to some rough situations. On that note, it’s good that BG3 has several different difficulty levels you can choose. So, to learn more about all the difficulty differences in Baldur’s Gate 3, read on.

Difficulty Differences in Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate 3 has four difficulty levels: Explorer, Balanced, Tactician, and Honor Mode. There is a fifth, Custom mode, but we will not count it as a difficulty level, as there you can tweak practically every part of the game to your liking. The Balanced mode is the standard experience, the difficulty level the developers intended the game to be played on. Each of the other modes has a number of changes it brings to the game, either making it easier, for the more casual players, or making it more difficult, for those looking for a bit of challenge. Honor mode has been recently added and it’s a special mode with only one Save file, intended for the most hardcore players. Let’s see what the differences are, compared to the Balanced mode.

Explorer Mode

  • All Enemies’ maximum Health is decreased.
  • Party members have their Health doubled.
  • Items purchased from a merchant are at a discount.
  • All Proficiency bonuses are increased by 2.
  • You cannot Multiclass.
  • Some Quests are easier to complete.

  • Enemy NPCs play smarter and are more aggressive. For example, they target spellcasters more often and attempt to finish off downed characters.
  • Some enemies gain special attacks and features not present in Explorer or Balanced modes.
  • All enemies gain +2 to attack rolls and +2 DC to their spells and abilities. They can also gain bonuses in the form of additional attack rolls, greater AC, resistances, better saving throws, and more.
  • The amount of Camp Supplies you need for a Long Rest increases from 40 to 80.
  • Merchant prices are less favorable.
  • Some Quests have more difficult requirements.

Honor Mode

  • You cannot change the difficulty level mid-game.
  • Bosses gain access to new Legendary Actions.
  • Stricter action economy and damage bonuses as the game progresses.
  • Players only get a single save file for the entire campaign which is constantly “updated”, ie, you cannot load the game in order to win a fight or pass some skill check. What happens happens.
  • Party wipe is permanent. In the case that happens, you can continue playing in the Custom mode, or start a new game.
  • Finishing the game in Honor mode will reward you with a special Dice Skin, to denote your success.
