Trying to figure out how to add friends in Animal Crossing: New Horizons? You’re not alone. We’ll outline the steps you need to take to play with friend, either offline or online.
In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you can invite your friends over to your island for a play session or visit theirs. This is the best way to get your hands on new resources and items, like different types of fruit and specific item colorways. Luckily, there are a couple of ways you can go about playing with up to four friends at once, whether you’re able to meet up in-person or online. We’ve outlined both methods to help you add friends and visit each other’s islands in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

How to Invite Friends in Animal Crossing: New Horizons
There are two ways you can play with friends on your island or theirs in New Horizons.
- Meet up with a friend in real-time to play offline locally.
- Use either a temporary Dodo Code or their Friend Code and play online.
While the first method can be done without an internet connection, you’ll need to connect to WiFi to play with friends via codes. This will require a Nintendo Switch Online membership.
Offline Play
Playing with friends offline is relatively simple in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. To do this, just head over to the airport on your island and speak with Orville behind the counter. Then, choose either, “I wanna fly!” or, “I want visitors.” If you want to invite a friend to your island, select the second directive. To visit another player’s island locally, choose the first prompt.
Online Play
If you can’t meet up with a friend in real-time to play locally, then you can invite friends to your New Horizons island via single-use Dodo Code or Friend Code. To do this, you’ll both need a paid subscription to Nintendo Switch Online.
With a temporary Dodo Code:
- Speak with Orville at your island’s airport.
- Select I want visitors.
- Choose Invite via Dodo Code.
- Select a specific player from your Nintendo Switch Friends List or allow any player to visit by choosing The more the merrier!
- Orville will then give you single-use five-digit Dodo Code.
- Give the code to anyone you’d like to visit your island.
- When you decide to close the airport’s gates, just speak with Orville again.
With a Friend Code:
- Find your Friends List under your personal Player Profile on your Nintendo Switch system.
- Go to your Friends List and click Add Friend.
- Enter their 12-digit Friend Code and send a Friend Request.
- Once accepted, launch Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
- Go to the airport on your island and speak with Orville.
- Choose the I want visitors prompt, then select Via online play to clarify.
- Select All my friends when Orville asks who you want to invite.
- The airport’s gate will remain open to anyone on your Friends List until you ask Orville to close the gate.
