Redfall Review - Half-Staked | Gamespot

Arkane takes a stab at infusing the genre du jour with its signature style, but the end results are a bloody mess.

You know what’s funny, I've made comments on here in the past about how they never showed off a long play walk through of a single player mission, something meaty you could watch to see how you could go about missions playing solo similar to the huge focus on the co-op playthroughs they've showed off of the game and I was called out a few times.

Now with these reviews coming out it's pretty much confirmed one of my main suspicions that it's another game which clearly has been ruined by co-op and overall online play.

The single player side of it is talked about being so disappointing and it's a huge deal here because for Arkane this is their bread and butter. We have a single player driven developer dipping their toes into online play and it just hasn't worked for them. I loved Deathloop but even then I felt with the small additions of online features it wasn't something you really needed or good enopugh to make a huge splash however despite that it was still smaller in comparison. Here it seems they've bitten off more than they can chew within a development time that was clearly not realistic enough given their lack of knowledge on the subject.

The issue overall with Redfalls online direction is that the game clearly doesn’t know what it wants to be so while on one hand it's shown as this "work together, team based" shooter the other gives off a "fun looter shooter" vibe. I mean remember how many people were confused after the big reveal we saw last year over the games direction? We had L4D comparisons on one side and then Borderlands ones were on the other.

This game could have been amazing if it was built up as a single player driven open world game (or hubs like past Arkane games) and the abilities the 4 players have are "paths" for one single character within the game you could go down towards when spending skill points in that chosen skill path. It's just crazy that they've done Vampires who are bursting with a variety of different interesting lore’s they could have taken inspiration from and it feels like it was the last thing on their mind.

Terry_B397d ago

I guess the game needed another 1-2 development years to be really good.

IamTylerDurden1397d ago

Imagine if they DIDN'T delay it?

darthv72397d ago

I just installed it this morning. I figured it cant hurt to give it a try for myself. It will have to wait until later tonight after work.

LordoftheCritics397d ago

I'm just surprised that people expected it to be good in the first place.

Did we not see the same trailers?

Hofstaderman397d ago

Guess we will likely never see Dishonored as we knew it.

blackblades397d ago

Which is sad cause that's the only series I like from Bethesda which I couldnt play anyway because of MS buying up the joint.

crazyCoconuts397d ago

The studio must have known the game wasn't ready. Why release like this?
Is it possible MS has laid out a template for these GamePass multiplayer games? Put a fixed amount of time/money into it, release it as long as it's not fundamentally broken, and spend the next n years refining it until it's good.
Isn't that what happened with Sea of Thieves?
I'm not saying I like it, but I refuse to believe these low ratings and poor state of the game are surprises to MS management.

IamTylerDurden1397d ago

And it was delayed. Obviously MS had a time and budget demand and the first delay was probably Arkane saying we can not release a playable game by 2022.

Deathloop is leagues above this. Redfall feels budget. Obviously Microsoft's touch ruined this game.

Sonic1881397d ago (Edited 397d ago )

I can't believe Forspoken is better than this game. I'm now concerned for Starfield

-Foxtrot397d ago

Same but only because how ambitious it is

If it was a Sci-Fi game set in just one planet with one huge map which they’ve done before sure but they are doing a lot with the game

IamTylerDurden1397d ago

From my limited experience with both games, yeah, Forspoken is better. Ppl kill the story but Forspoken at least has one. Redfall so far is just some storyboard pictures.

badz149397d ago

GAAS & Gamepass FTW!

...NOT!

isarai397d ago

"ruined by co-op" first time I've ever heard that 😆

-Foxtrot397d ago

Welllllllll

It’s the kiss of death clearly 😉

IamTylerDurden1397d ago

He's right though. The game was designed around co op nonsense rather than engaging sp story and pace. Fox is right.

isarai397d ago

Oh I'm not saying he's wrong, just like....damn what a waste of an opportunity this game was.

I said from the announce trailer to the day before launch it looked mediocre, devoid of soul, and that the characters and story appeared B4B quality and through several hrs of play it is exactly that. The game i excepted the entire time, i just didn't think critics would nail it to the cross.

The actual exploration and vibe is ok, early on it's fun-ish but after 4 hrs it's already getting old. Visuals and combat are imo well below Deathloop which i do not understand seeing as how this is a next gen, AAA exclusive years later. On S it looks shit. A gen behind, other than vfx which are decent. Character models and assets, animation, it's almost Prey or Dishonored quality. And at 30 frames in sp. The rocks look ok, ig...

The characters thus far are hollow shells and the story is a nothing burger so far, as expected. It doesn't even have real cutscenes, it's a less stylized version of Infamous 1 with story board pictures. NPCs are worse than Dead Island 1 so far. Absolute, generic wastes who look bad and offer zip.

The gunplay is below par. It's mediocre at best. The game kinda sucks. It is what it is. I'm not sure why some previews posted on n4g made a fuss about how great it was. Then some ppl crowed about goty potential. Like...it never looked good, what were they seeing? Oh well, another stinker.

shinoff2183397d ago

I've seen one reviewer complaining about the story being told through paintings or still pics. For indie no problem but a aaa game should be a little more cutscene like imo

Christopher397d ago

Someone else said it, and I kind of do get the impression that an SP game's abilities were spread out and added to a bit to make it MP.

Two focus on traditional 'outsider' dishonored abilities from seeking out and finding enemies, cloaking, traversal, and shielding. Two focus more on gadgets, with an aim at control. A slightly more expanded tree for each ability whereas in Dishonored you'd have bone charms or the like. Then add more weapons within a type and weapon levels as drops rather than upgraded gear.

I think this is one of those games where I'd like to be a fly on the wall when they were discussing the development and how or why things evolved to what we have now. It just feels like not what was originally planned.

-Foxtrot396d ago (Edited 396d ago )

Oh I agree this game has "single player" all over it where they've then split it up to make an online game.

I just don't understand who made them change their mind

It feels like they got half way into development, realised it wasn't working, they bit off more than they could chew because they didn't have the knowledge or skills for an online game and couldn't restart development so they just kept going forward hoping for the best.

I swear to f***** God if Starfield has online co-op

Holy Moly, it's worse than I thought. 70 bucks, or 100 for a 'special' version? What were they thinking?

IamTylerDurden1397d ago

Shouldbe 40. It's budget quality.

saint_seya397d ago

You mean 4, like the score :D

Christopher397d ago

$40 and on all platforms, this game would sell pretty well actually. It would be a budget co-op game before Diablo or other co-op shooters aiming for a later summer/early fall release.

Bathyj397d ago

This game was rushed out to die for the sake of Gamepass filler.

Xbox gamers need to stop bragging their gaming is cheap and start demanding their gaming be high quality.

rakentaja397d ago (Edited 397d ago )

In 2021, the game had already been in development for 4 years. It seems that during development there was a problem with the ideas or putting them together. Time was definitely not of the main factor here.

Shadowsteal396d ago (Edited 396d ago )

Time was definitely the main factor here. Arkane Austin's last game was Prey which was a pretty great success, critically and reception amongst gamers. So we know they are capable of making great games.

Redfall was very ambitious from the get go, co-op AND open-world two firsts for Arkane. The amount of time allocated was not enough to bring this game up to standard.

At the end of the day Bethesda and Microsoft decides when these games release and historically they're both known for rushing games; Fallout 76 and Halo: Infinite.

talocaca397d ago

Seriously! When was the last time they had a true GOTY contender (aka not a sequel to Forza).

EvertonFC397d ago

I don't think they've ever had a GOTY contender

execution17396d ago

Probably halo 3 and that was forever ago and a different studio or even gears when epic made them

Silly Mammo397d ago

"This game was rushed out to die on the stake for Gamepass filler."

Fixed it for you. Gotta keep with the vampire theme.

Father__Merrin397d ago

@Bath

They can't do that as they believe Spencer to be Thier lord

Lightning77397d ago

How was it rushed out when they had a year delay? They were granted s whole year and still couldn't deliver a good game.

jznrpg397d ago

Because it still wasn’t ready

shinoff2183397d ago

Was going to comment what I was about to say. I look below and bam

Jznrpg got me beat

I'm not interested in this game but i think it's great they added the offline mode for those who are.

darthv722d ago

It was okay at first... once they added the performance update it was definitely better.

TwoPicklesGood2d ago

Bury this turd. It’s only good as a reminder of what devs shouldn’t do.

mkis0072d ago

I hate the concept of an announced final update.

Would It Have Even Mattered If Redfall Were Good?

Even if Redfall were a good game, the closure of Hi-Fi Rush proves even that doesn't matter in the industry.

Profchaos20d ago

Yeah it would have mattered especially since their huge game that year wasn't all that it was cracked up to be remember redfail was almost heavily promoted and hyped not to the level of starfield but still more promoted than the average game.

There was still a decent marketing campaign behind the game I'm sure millions were spent advertising it on websites and I saw a few billboards and bus stop signs in real life

darthv7220d ago

their biggest mistake was showcasing it as being a 60fps game only to release it at 30. That really soured the taste so that when the real 60fps mode was released, many still didnt want to give it a taste. i tierd it at 30... it was okay, but playing it at 60 is a much better experience and a better overall game. Its really not that bad once you get past the drama surrounding its initial release and just play it for what it is. It has some pretty decent aspects but nothing groundbreaking. It feels like a typical fps from the ps360 days... of which there were many.

jwillj2k420d ago

No it wouldn’t matter it wouldn’t bring in enough profit to offset their 100 billion dollar acquisition. It would maybe delay the inevitable by some months.

Profchaos20d ago

Pretty much no game in Bethesda stables makes cod numbers instantly even fallout 4 Bethesda's best selling game sold 12 million at launch and over the next 10 years climbed to over 32 which cod would do rapidly

CrimsonWing6920d ago

I would f*cking think so. Good games are what draws people to your platform. It’s why I adored the 360 era with Gears of War being one of the highlights for me. You make sh*t games and it just makes your platform that much worse and you start gobbling up studios I like and then killing them off it also makes me hate your platform as well… just sayin’

franwex20d ago

Unless the game would’ve been War Zone, or Fortnite level. No. Maybe even Hell divers 2 I doubt would’ve been enough.

Eonjay20d ago

Helldivers 2 realistically has earned about half a billion which is definitely a success considering it probably cost Sony $50 million to make.

However you would still need 140 releases to at least be that successful to break even on a ACT purchase.

This is how you know the goal for Microsoft was to reach those crazy subscribers numbers. Without them the whole plan falls apart.

Exvalos20d ago

No it would not have, the ABK deal was great for Microsoft but horrible for Xbox. Over 100 billion dollars in acquisitions. That money has to be made back. That ABK deal essentially destroyed Xbox as we know it.

A Flawed Game Till The Very End, Redfall Deserved To Die, But Not Arkane Austin

Hanzala from eXputer: "Redfall was a bland, repetitive game with no post-release support; it deserved to die, but why kill Arkane Austin over one mistake?"

z2g24d ago (Edited 24d ago )

What short memories everybody has. According to the internet they became “the worst studio” after redfall… the internet made redfall a bigger deal than redfall just being a shitty game becaus *gasp* Xbox bought them and” just wanted shitty gamepass games so quality wasn’t a priority”.
(The reality was it was just rushed to market to fill a release hole).

Everybody wants Xbox to fail but as soon as closures start happening suddenly that was never the hope at all and Xbox is just evil.

What has happened to humanity. Being so extreme with viewpoints paints everybody into a hypocritical corner where the side of the story your on depends on which side makes Xbox look worse. Read the internet. Your disagrees are lies.

Shame. Gamers never want to accept their role in all the shit.

My heart goes out to those laid off. Not sure why those studios had to close but I suspect they were costing more money to operate than they were brining in revenue. It does cost money to fix games. Cyberpunk’s road to redemption was prob approaching the price of the original game.

That sucks and I’m angry about it but that’s also business and I’m in the same boat myself at my job as we speak… so it’s not like I don’t have sympathy. But I’m tired of the short memories, the lack of true empathy and opinions being driven by branding. Disgusting.

MIDGETonSTILTS1724d ago

People wanted Xbox to succeed, especially after THE biggest media acquisition in history and effectively owning the entire existing Western RPG genre; but we knew they would fail, and they’d drag down an entire genre with them.

Nobody wanted this, but it was foreseen.
