The context never actually matters though. When Tell Me Why got revealed, people also said the exact same thing even though it was about the main character in story-driven game. People always frame it as pandering, virtue signaling and so on because they don't want to see transgender and non-binary people in media ... but know outright saying that is wrong. That's why they're disliking your comment more than others even though they agree. You're being too honest about it.

It's strange reading these comments and knowing that in 15-30 years most people won't be offended by any of this anymore, same as the hate against gay people dropping like a stone. It's all so pointless and just history repeating itself. We're at a point where most still dislike these people and are confused by them, but a rapidly growing minority have no issue with them, and it's driving those who do mad.

And like them or not, the specialists are actually supposed to be characters. They're trying to emulate EA's other big shooter, Apex Legends. The developers have no reason to get angry and respond like you're asking, and if a character artist pushed to include that design, it's only a big deal if you make it one.

I identify as non-binary, but even I get tired of this kind of stuff. I understand trying to expand the characters in a world to be on all different parts of the spectrum of human life, but when it's singled out like this it can feel more like baiting a specific audience rather than exploring organic diversity. It was pointed out in the comments that DICE didn't bring this up without anyone asking, but it still feels unnecessary.

Just like walking by people or interacting with them in the real world, we don't have to know everyone's granular life details.

As for this, ignorance is alright as long as you put even minimal effort to learn/understand. Getting a pronoun wrong is fine too, as long as you don't insist on using the wrong one after being told what a person prefers. Yes, accidents happen, but the cases where people get upset is usually when others insist on using the wrong pronoun in an actively offensive way. Like some of the replies to that original tweet, there were a bunch of people going out of their way to make a point to refer to the character as "she/her", which is just unnecessary.

And about new ones popping up, honestly, I think many of these are trolls trying to make people who use "they/them" look bad. When in doubt, use they/them, it's neutral and easy enough. If they correct you to use something different, just humour them. Because assuming it's either 1) A troll, if you don't react, you take away their power or 2) that person genuinely prefers it and in that case, no harm done.

I think that non-binary inclusion in stories can be legitimately criticized on two fronts: they can be consider inauthentic by non-binary people (ie the character doesn’t feel relevant to them or the story), or binary people can find them to be a confusing detraction (ie the inclusion is a thematic focus that doesn’t mesh with the rest of the arcs at play).

I see a lot of binary people complaining about any case of non-binary inclusion as inauthentic or pandering, which doesn’t seem like a well-developed criticism to me. These people could argue that games focus too much on non-binary themes when the focus doesn’t amount to much in the story, but I literally never hear that.

Some would argue that the non-binary inclusion in LoU2 was unnecessary, but I would disagree. The theme of identity aligned with the rest of the story for me. And in this case, a character is non-binary in the appendix…
