I Can’t Believe This Many Of You Care About Performance Mode

Redfall won't launch with performance mode, and that's a loss, but it's okay if you don't really mind. Don't worry about your gamer card.

Almost any game released since the ps4 pro/bx1x has had a quality and performance mode. Top that with the fact that "world's strongest console" was literally MSs slogan for the series x, AND this game doesn't really look like it's pushing bleeding edge technology, and yeah, it doesn't make sense. It reeks of pushing a game out before it's finished. It cannot be that hard to implement especially seeing as how its launching on PC too where you can adjust settings as you please. So if the ability is already there to just make a performance focused preset, why is it not launching with it? Worse yet why do they not even know when they will add it in? "Undisclosed future date" seriously?

thesoftware730411d ago

Ok, got it.

Now honestly, could you tell me why you are so outraged?
Because you feel misled?
Because you think they could have added it but didn't?
Did you have high expectations from RF? I can't recall you ever saying you were.
Were you planning on buying or playing it anyway?

Chriswheeler22411d ago

Not the guy you are replying to but similar feelings.

It's the fact that I feel they need to do better. I vote with my wallet. If other devs can make games look much better and run better, I dont feel Arkane deserve my money. We know a patch is comming, so it's not a matter of ability but just being rushed.

A game like this relies on people and first impressions are everything. When the patch does come out, it may not even have a player base. It's a crowded space to compete it.

isarai411d ago (Edited 411d ago )

I WANT XBOX TO BE AWESOME LIKE THEY USED TO BE.

it's really no more complicated than that. They repeatedly treat everyone like idiots, and people eat it up, demand better, stop making excuses for them. Why is it they are the one platform with 1st party games that are basically no better than your average 3rd party game, and half the time don't even launch feature complete. How is everyone ok with getting basically early access games from A FIRST PARTY STUDIO! Fans always brag about how much money MS has, why don't they ever use it to finish their damn games before they ship them?

I always have an eye on MS especially since the acquisition, in hopes that they will get back to how great they used to be. Blows my mind that even after all these acquisitions, they've only delivered one non-disputable banger in Hi-Fi rush which wasn't even their doing as it was developed before they were acquired.

After 10yrs of this bs why are you not outraged?

Chevalier411d ago

Isn't it misleading to show all the gameplay from the PC build at 60 fps and pull the rug weeks before release? Plus to add insult to injury isn’t this the first game Xbox is upping the price to $70? $100 for the deluxe version?

sinspirit411d ago

What Isarai said.

XBox used to be incredible. They had few games, but they were a variety of games that came out the gate as titans. Ever since 2008 when Phil became in charge of European studios and pushed Rare and Lionhead to be Kinect focused, and then 2010 when he became in charge of all game development as Director of Games, everything became Kinect focused and he helped push for that. Everything since then became lacking, losing many features that used to be essential, incomplete and relying on updates, unplayable at launch, and more focused on their future focus of monetization and tactics such as battlepass and wheel spins that try to drive daily engagement. I just want a game console to be a game console first and foremost. Worry about the extras and services later.

Rocketisleague411d ago (Edited 411d ago )

I'm a huge fan of arkane. Only good thing about Bethesda these days imo. With that said, their games, are pc games. The console versions always suck compared to.the pc one. They're just too fast paced..generally. they need 60fps and they need a mouse and keyboard, not s controller. I played dishonored 1.on pc and 2 on ps4. Couldn't believe how mediocre number 2 waa on ps4. Just slow.wnd sloppy. Returnal is quite similar to this. Apparently it is a hard game when you have a controller. Prey 2017 being the exception there, that was great on ps4 with its slower pace.

Anyway, other than that. Arkane actually try something different. One of the few studios who keep the magic of the 90s and 00s in gaming while innovating with newer gameplay elements. Similar to souls borne. Opposite to Bethesda developed games elder scrolls, fallout and soon to be starfield which left the magic behind a long time ago.

IamTylerDurden1411d ago

Ppl expect 60 fps in next gen fps. Like racing games it's a general expectation to run 60 particularly on "the world's most powerful box". And this wasn't disclosed until a few weeks before launch. Ofc ppl are mad. And like some have stated, it does not appear to be anything other than a time issue or poor management. The game isn't a technical powerhouse and they claim it's coming later. So why launch now? Mind you a game that was already delayed significantly.

IamTylerDurden1411d ago (Edited 411d ago )

isarai

Hi Fi is not a banger. Play it. It's an average rythm game beyond the exquisite visuals. Gameplay, controls, and level design are average. I had more fun with Hellsinger bc the music and rythm aspect were better. Hi Fi is a great production with care and polish but beyond that i don't see it. I didn't enjoy the soundtrack either. Also, it's not really a AAA monster, hard to say banger. I wouldn't call Stray a banger for example.

Profchaos411d ago

It is misleading when every promotional trailer shows gameplay at 60 that's not representative of the final product

mkis007410d ago (Edited 410d ago )

Devils advocate here ...

Nothing about the game so far suggests that a performance mode is impossible. It is a game that should easily be able to scale back a few things to get a 60 fps mode.

If the base game was already running at a 1440p resolution due to some amazing intensive effects or gameplay, then you get a pass. Today people are just used to having it available. 4k or performance mode at 1440p shouldn't be so hard to hit at launch.

thesoftware730411d ago

I get that; it's kinda like what you said in your first post about your feelings and opinions. You know that you did not answer the questions right? I'll add to it.

Do you have an Xbox or Sub to GP?

It's a bit baseless and odd that the 30fps alone could make you call or compare this to an early-access game. What if it plays well, has tons to do, and, most of all, fun? Is the 30fps the thing that makes it early access?

Lifexline411d ago (Edited 411d ago )

Dont bother most of these guys just love hating on anything. It seemed no one cared about Redfall it was all about Starfield. But then came the negative news about it and all of a sudden everybody was interested. People just love to bitch about something.

I agree with the article it's funny all of a sudden everyone cares about 60 FPS on all games when there are plenty of games on both playstation and Xbox that are locked at 30 FPS people act like 60 FPS is the standard it is not yet some games do it but not all. This just gives people something to continue to bitch about. Why did no one bitch or make a big deal about all the other games released this gen that are not 60 FPS?. I'm still playing it and hopefully it's a fun game I'll reserve judgement until i finish playing it myself.

derek411d ago

@thesoftware, it's ok for Microsoft to be criticized for not delivering the goods. You don't have to feel the need to defend everyone of their missteps.

derek411d ago

@theprofessional, I don't care about Redfall I'll likely never play it. Most of the criticism is coming from (besides obvious trolling)noted xbox fans asking what the problem is with Microsoft tech/studio management given their recent history of problems this gen. Others are able to get their games out feature complete while Microsoft appears to struggle is the complaint.

IamTylerDurden1411d ago (Edited 411d ago )

You are trying very hard but ppl freaked out when Driveclub was 30 fps despite benchmark visuals. And that was a decade ago. DC was specifically held back by the hardware. It ran 40-60 uncapped but they wanted stability. The weak jag CPU and PS4 launch specs were limiting. With the current hardware ppl expect 60 for racing and fps. I'm not as bullish on the need as others but it is what it is. Major first party, next gen fps on the world's most teraflop Xbox running 30 and looking average visually is surprising.

I play both, but it feels like a certain camp can't take what they dish. Driveclub was ripped for running 30, ppl bragged that XB1 had more 60fps early on, they brag now about more 120. They bragged about true 4k. Now a major first party on big d*ck hardware launches at 30 and you run around asking ppl to apologize for being upset? Can't boast about power and specs, belittle your competition and then get sour when u sh*t the bed and ppl call u out. Microsoft crows about powa. Cmon. They should take their medicine. They had it coming. Demon's Souls was killed for having a quality AND performance mode lol. Ppl thought it should do both simultaneously.

Double post.

Lightning77411d ago

"it doesn't make sense. It reeks of pushing a game out before it's finished."

Do you know what a unfinished game looks like? glitchy, Broken, game crashes that's a unfinished game. A real unfinished game. If the game is none of those things I mentioned then get it out the door. A bad game is always bad gone it Doesn't matter if it's 30 or 1000 frames ppl will always talk about how bad or good the actual game is.

Talk about exaggerated and blown out of proportion reaction.

"half the time don't even launch feature complete."

Half the time? You clearly made that up. But go ahead and list me the games.

"only delivered one non-disputable banger in Hi-Fi rush which wasn't even their doing as it was developed before they were acquired."

That's right Hi FI doesn't count well guess what Redfall wasn't developed by MS either. No credit given to Hi FI you're just whining just to whine now. Nothing you're saying doesn't matter especially after that hifi comment.

thesoftware730411d ago

@ Derek,

I'm not defending anything; all I did was ask questions. All the overdone outrage is silly because it's coming from many people who had no intention of purchasing/downloading/playing the game.

This one detail has the same culprits saying the game is complete trash, early access; MS can't make games(even though this game was being developed before MS acquired them), or other unrelated rants. The game is not even out; what if the music, gameplay, story, mission, powers, and enemies are all good? Then is the 30 fps the thing that makes the game Trash?

I play Switch games at 30fps, and they are super enjoyable; BoTW was a masterclass of a game, with the sum of all its parts making it one of the most renowned games of all time already.

I'm Just saying people seem so so outraged at this as if it's unheard of; there are not many 4-player, 4k 60fps open-world games out there...as a matter of fact, none that I can think about at all, and even then the game WILL have 60fps, for whatever reason the devs chose to releases the game with Quality mode only. I don't see why it's the end of the world.

But go ahead, as I am positive if the game is good, it will stand on its own merits rather than fake outrage on N4G.

IamFrasierCrane411d ago

You don’t have to purchase something to criticize it. Remember DRM on Xbox One before the console launched? Everyone complained about that, even people who had no intention of buying the console. It’s okay to want nice things.

derek411d ago

@thesoftware, outrage is how everything is covered these days. The reality is most console players will try the game out on gamepass and judge it for what's there, irregardless of the 30 fps controversy. But Microsoft deserves some heat regarding this issue given their messaging leading up to this generation that they had the 12 tflop monster with "true rdna 2" tech.

Tedakin411d ago

Has nothing to do with the "world's strongest console." The PS5 version would have been 30 fps too.

IamFrasierCrane411d ago

What PS5 version? Redfall is from a Microsoft studio..

Rhythmattic410d ago

Tedkin. And?
If it was on PS5, do you think people wouldn't care that it still ran only at 30fps without other options?

FinalFantasyFanatic410d ago

Surely performance mode isn't that hard to add in, the game doesn't look graphically intensive for the Xbox, they could just drop the resolution and maybe some details to make a 60fps performance mode. That's how we normally get a performance mode in most games on console, really surprised it's not an option.

BlackDoomAx411d ago

Lol at that article. If you can't see a difference between 30 and 60 fps, good for you. But here is the catch, and i know it's hard to understand but: people are different, and many are *not like you*.

Amplitude411d ago (Edited 411d ago )

I don't wanna the link and give thegamer ad money but if it actually says that, well that doesn't make any sense. I think everybody can see the difference between 30 and 60? Most likely this bad site trying to get hits. So many controversial takes and clickbait headlines for attention. Just blacklisted them on my phone lol

FinalFantasyFanatic410d ago

Getting used to playing video games at high frame rates, movies and animation tend to look a little bit stutter-ish to me until I get used to the lower frame rates again, especially noticeable if I just played a video game before hand.

saint_seya411d ago

I play Fornite at 120 fps, and i can tell the difference with 60 fps (i got so used to 120 fps that 60 fps feels weird), someone that says that doesnt feel the difference is lying or really has a problem .. simple as that.

CobraKai411d ago

I don’t feel the difference. The only reason I know a game is 120fps is because the fidelity takes a huge hit. I tried playing Halo Infinite in 120 fps and I couldn’t. I don’t think not feeling a difference is a problem, I zone out into the game and I don’t care about frame rates.

blackblades411d ago (Edited 411d ago )

Being use to 60fps and going back to 30 for 5mins feels like crap. I was one of the ones that was fine with 30fps that was way before I was playing in 60fps for all games. Also wasnt there Xbox players sitting there bragging about 60fps and shyt talking ps5 players at one point. I think was about the series x TFlops advantage

Alos88411d ago

"I can't believe this many of you care about a thing I don't care about" lol what a cope article.

Terry_B411d ago

I can't believe that there are more bad takes on a site than even on gamingbolt, but thegamer.com reached this achievement.

Eonjay410d ago

Even before the acquisitions Microsoft was like the richest company on Earth, but you would never know that by judging the quality of their product. There is no parity between their fat pockets and the products they provide. The fact they have to absorb the entire industry just to "compete" with a company less than 5% their size is absurd. The content a company of that size can produce is at the top end of what is actually possible.

andy85411d ago

Sorry but 30 fps feels like panning the camera through sludge. I luckily just got a 120hz screen just as Plague Tale came out and I'm so glad I did, because the 30fps mode was frustrating but thankfully there was a 40fps one which was bearable. I couldn't even imagine it in an fps now with those constant camera movements. Stop defending this unnecessary BS

Number1TailzFan411d ago

60fps should be the bare minimum, hell my first taste of high hz was in 2012 with a 120hz 1080p screen, and have upgraded screens more than once since then. 90+fps is simply superior and I can even tell when I'm playing at 60fps as the motion simply isn't as smooth. It might be harder to tell on console with certain games due to slower panning with the controller though.

DarXyde411d ago

Yeah, the difference is super clear. When there's a hiccup too, it's incredibly noticeable. You may not know exactly how many frames, but you definitely know 60fps-ish. FPS and driving games below 60fps are pretty much Cardinal sins. I actually couldn't really play Driveclub because it felt nauseating at times.

For anyone that can't tell the difference, Play Demon's Souls at both settings. Then come back and let me know if you can feel the difference.

Redfall's final update, which adds an Offline Mode, is available and it's 16GB in size

Arkane Austin has just released Game Update 4, the final patch for Redfall which is 16GB in size and adds an Offline Mode.

It was okay at first... once they added the performance update it was definitely better.

Bury this turd. It’s only good as a reminder of what devs shouldn’t do.

Would It Have Even Mattered If Redfall Were Good?

Even if Redfall were a good game, the closure of Hi-Fi Rush proves even that doesn't matter in the industry.

Profchaos20d ago

Yeah it would have mattered especially since their huge game that year wasn't all that it was cracked up to be remember redfail was almost heavily promoted and hyped not to the level of starfield but still more promoted than the average game.

There was still a decent marketing campaign behind the game I'm sure millions were spent advertising it on websites and I saw a few billboards and bus stop signs in real life

darthv7219d ago

their biggest mistake was showcasing it as being a 60fps game only to release it at 30. That really soured the taste so that when the real 60fps mode was released, many still didnt want to give it a taste. i tierd it at 30... it was okay, but playing it at 60 is a much better experience and a better overall game. Its really not that bad once you get past the drama surrounding its initial release and just play it for what it is. It has some pretty decent aspects but nothing groundbreaking. It feels like a typical fps from the ps360 days... of which there were many.

jwillj2k420d ago

No it wouldn’t matter it wouldn’t bring in enough profit to offset their 100 billion dollar acquisition. It would maybe delay the inevitable by some months.

Profchaos19d ago

Pretty much no game in Bethesda stables makes cod numbers instantly even fallout 4 Bethesda's best selling game sold 12 million at launch and over the next 10 years climbed to over 32 which cod would do rapidly

CrimsonWing6920d ago

I would f*cking think so. Good games are what draws people to your platform. It’s why I adored the 360 era with Gears of War being one of the highlights for me. You make sh*t games and it just makes your platform that much worse and you start gobbling up studios I like and then killing them off it also makes me hate your platform as well… just sayin’

franwex20d ago

Unless the game would’ve been War Zone, or Fortnite level. No. Maybe even Hell divers 2 I doubt would’ve been enough.

Eonjay19d ago

Helldivers 2 realistically has earned about half a billion which is definitely a success considering it probably cost Sony $50 million to make.

However you would still need 140 releases to at least be that successful to break even on a ACT purchase.

This is how you know the goal for Microsoft was to reach those crazy subscribers numbers. Without them the whole plan falls apart.

Exvalos19d ago

No it would not have, the ABK deal was great for Microsoft but horrible for Xbox. Over 100 billion dollars in acquisitions. That money has to be made back. That ABK deal essentially destroyed Xbox as we know it.

A Flawed Game Till The Very End, Redfall Deserved To Die, But Not Arkane Austin

Hanzala from eXputer: "Redfall was a bland, repetitive game with no post-release support; it deserved to die, but why kill Arkane Austin over one mistake?"

z2g23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

What short memories everybody has. According to the internet they became “the worst studio” after redfall… the internet made redfall a bigger deal than redfall just being a shitty game becaus *gasp* Xbox bought them and” just wanted shitty gamepass games so quality wasn’t a priority”.
(The reality was it was just rushed to market to fill a release hole).

Everybody wants Xbox to fail but as soon as closures start happening suddenly that was never the hope at all and Xbox is just evil.

What has happened to humanity. Being so extreme with viewpoints paints everybody into a hypocritical corner where the side of the story your on depends on which side makes Xbox look worse. Read the internet. Your disagrees are lies.

Shame. Gamers never want to accept their role in all the shit.

My heart goes out to those laid off. Not sure why those studios had to close but I suspect they were costing more money to operate than they were brining in revenue. It does cost money to fix games. Cyberpunk’s road to redemption was prob approaching the price of the original game.

That sucks and I’m angry about it but that’s also business and I’m in the same boat myself at my job as we speak… so it’s not like I don’t have sympathy. But I’m tired of the short memories, the lack of true empathy and opinions being driven by branding. Disgusting.

MIDGETonSTILTS1723d ago

People wanted Xbox to succeed, especially after THE biggest media acquisition in history and effectively owning the entire existing Western RPG genre; but we knew they would fail, and they’d drag down an entire genre with them.

Nobody wanted this, but it was foreseen.
