Molyneux announces Natal support for Fable 3

Patrick Garratt of VG247, "If a tweet from UK industry money man and Gamesbrief founder Nicholas Lovell's to be believed, Peter Molyneux tonight confirmed that Fable 3 will feature Natal support.

Said the note: "Fable 3 will have Natal support. Is that an announcement? #molyneux"

Molyneux dropped the nugget in a BAFTA lecture in London tonight. We're in Scotland with Microsoft at the moment, and no one seemed shocked by this. We'll get an official comment in the morning."

1 - Wow,
This is great news, a game like Fable could make some very interesting use of Natal, I sort of knew Molyneux would first try to implement all his "crazy" ideas using Natal+Fable3, especially when Fable3 got announced so early, 2+2= 4.

@ z-hayden, your comment assumes alot, we really don't know much about Fable3 yet, yet you go on to say Fable2 was a good game but somehow Natal support will ruin it, please explain why? Then after that please tell me how you know that Natal support won't just be an totally optional so people who like you don't want to use Natal can enjoy Fable3 with ONLY a standard controller.

@ Godmars290, Natal is described as "hands-free" because its the only motion device that can be used without a controller, however microsoft has said multiple times in statements that some games will only use Natal, while some will use both, also they've said Natals level of implementation is completely up to what the developer thinks makes sense, so my best guess is that Fable3 will use both a standard controller and Natal. Its no different than some of sony ads describing ps3 as a bluray player, its an attractive feature but obviously thats not all it does.

I predict while Fable3 will have heavy Natal implementation, Halo Reach will have some very limited Natal support also, and both will be out Fall of 2010.

Molyneux announces and promises all sorts of things.

What he lacks is the ability to deliver on his announcements and promises. That's just a fact. Name a single Molyneux game that included all (or even most) of the features he promised...you can't.

@4sh0w

It's not the only motion device that can be used without a controller... hell, the 360 already has Vision Cam... a motion device without a controller.

You have to remember, its not going to be a Natal specific game, so im sure you'll have an option to play without it if you want.

we're starting to get somewhere with Natal now. The first real mainstream game, one i enjoy playing and one that should adapt really well to its use. Pub games, talking to the characters and questing should be pretty fun.

1.8 - PiratThom,
I'm not really sure what your getting at, the vision camera offered some "gesture-based" motion control but it was obviously had a very limited range in regards to motion controls, i.e. capabilities because the main focus was video chat, web messaging like most othe web cams. I don't even know what games even attempted to do motion with it. It also could allow you to take a pic and use it on your gamertag, and of course it allowed you to put your face in a game if the game supported it.(R6:Vegas) I wouldn't describe that as "a motion device without a controller", hell even Microsoft calls it a "Xbox LIVE Vision Camera" and advertised it as such. Its like saying those early Palm PDA's were computers just because you could store a smile file on it. At any rate, the point I was trying to relay is that Natal is the only motion control device being offered by all 3 companies that is suppose to allow hands-free gaming, (full body motion tracking) both sony and wii's motion controls utilize a wand-like device for tracking/gameplay. I simply pointed out the advertising will of course try to point out the difference in approach to motion controls but that doesn't in any way suggest thats the only way Natal will be implemented, which again microsoft has said repeatedly.

*sigh* I'm not excited for this. I'm against motion control gaming. I'm one of those guys that just wants to sit down and relax with a game. That being said, I'll hold judgment until the game comes out, but really am disappointed right now.

I think people actually try to ignore the fact that Natal is also being used to co-exist with the existing controller... in the same games. This is the prime example of it. It will use the regular 360 controller plus Natal. I also doubt you're going to be forced to use it.

@4sh0w

But you're missing the point, the Vision Cam had games all of which were movement based or augmented reality style things.

Natal may be an evolution of that, but it's not the only hands free controller out there.

1.14 - The news is true.
I was at the Bafta Lecture tonight in london, and molyneux was the speaker.

He confirmed that "we would be stupid if we didnt somehow use natal in fable 3". He showed milo and talked about industry.
The only thing I saw that was new in milo that I hadnt seen was someone holding drawn pictures up to the screen and milo reaching out and grabbing it, turning it round and then showing the same image. Nifty!

1.15 - what games?, what other "hands free" controller is supported with games motion controlled games?
@ PirateThom
"the Vision Cam had games all of which were movement based or augmented reality style things."

In my above comment I was just going off of what I remembered, but after your latest comment I just googled "xbox live vision cam games", now I didn't look to hard but I did check wikipedia which will be the first link/source, there were 28 games listed under the heading "In-Game Video Support", 11 games under "Face Mapping Support", and 4 games under "Controller Functionality", then I went to youtube to see what kind of motion control these games had and they were all just mini Arcade games most of which only demonstrated the most basic of movement like pinball; on screen shows your right hand on in a box on the right and your left hand in a box on the left, move the right hand to use the "flipper" on the right to hit the ball and vice versa.= Pinball, Very limited and clearly not what the *VISION* CAMERA's main focus was, note 2 are microsoft made Arcade titles and the other 2 don't really even do anything but add a motion minigame and the other puts you in short movie skits, which is why the other 39 or so games didn't even bother with tacky motion controls. Really all of them just seem like simple add ins because frankly is just a web cam, with a few extras. Thats a key difference because as we know Natal is absolutely a huge evolution of the vision cam, and Eyetoy as far as tech goes, an again unlike the vision cam its advertised and intended to do full body motion control gaming, and as we also see, unlike the vision cam, the with the tech involved in Natal its attracting alot of dev attention, and unlike the vision cam Natal has already been confirmed for a big exclusive title like Fable3. Yes, I do understand your point that there are other movement based devices on the market but you seem like you're avoiding the actual whole intent of my original comments which is there are some really big key differences between Natal, wii, ps3 motion controller and now definitely the VISION cam. If your arguements is one of symantecs (its not the only motion device with no controller) then thats fine, yes the VISION cam doesn't have a controller, but I certainly didn't mean no peripheral has ever allowed motion controls before Natal.

So the hands-free controller is going to be used as an aid to a controller, or will there be an option to only use Natal instead of a controller?

I've noticed this lately, people moaning/worrying about "Natal support". It doesnt mean the entire game will require Natal. It could be as simple as menu navigation or simple mini-games, if you can do anything, no matter how basic, with Natal, that's "support".

99.9% of 360 games post Natal launch will probably "support" it, doesnt mean it's required. It's just more encouragement to purchase.

He said that, the game was firmly controller based. There would be some natal interaction in the game, but the game did not need natal to be played.

Magic being performed with your hands and voice controls for charming, and other gestures...Pretty obvious if you stop hating and use your brain. Better yet, if you truly did play Fable 2. Just saying.

The game doesn't necessarily need Natal for its main story line.

I can see Fishing, Wood cutting, gestures and what not being executed perfecty with Natal.

Simple things like that can make the game seem more immersive if you have Natal.

11 - Molyneux also confirmed that
Natal's objective is not to replace the controller. The hardcore players and hardcore games would not be suited to natal, but that there are great possibilities for natal's capabilities and this would add to the 360 not replace.

Your going to rule Albion in Fable 3, so I can see Natal playing a part in the strategy and diplomacy of being king.

I can't see the exploration or combat using Natal really.

I guess it could be like two games, a third person RPG adventure game using a standard controller, and also a strategic problem solving one using Natal.

Might work.

I'm not completely sold on Natal yet, especially not until I know what it'll cost. If it's cheap enough, I'll plunge for sure. Otherwise, I'll have to see some killer apps to convince me it's worth the price. But Fable 3 is an absolute must for me. I love both Fable games. Can't wait to play the third.

16 - As long as
I can ''Minority Report'' my dashboard, then I'll be happy with Natal.
If they can implement it that way to the X360 system and fulfil that dream for me then its won half the battle for me. All I'll need then is to know I can pull off a kamehameha wave on DBZ with Natal when it drops to be 100% sold on it.
As for Fable 3, flicking my hand like Peter from Heroes and discharging blue lightening?? What part of that doesn't scream awesome?
