My list would go something like this (in no particular order)
Killzone 2
Infamous
Colin McRae Dirt 2
Red Faction: Guerrilla
Operation Flashpoint 2: Dragon Rising - So long as they release a patch quick smart fixing the AI bugs and a few other things where they just got lazy. Otherwise is the best military sim ever.

And possibly Uncharted 2 - Note: The only reason I'm puting this down as possible is that I'm only 4 hours in, and havent had time to try out multiplayer either. First impressions however are that the game is quite epic.

I didn't like RE5, and Halo 3 definetly doesn't deserve to be on the list.

Probable inclusions later on in the year will be MW2, AC2 and the likes.

The list would look too biased if they put Infamous and Demon's Souls. I'm pretty sure those 2 games are more worthy than ODST and RE5.

Though I will admit Uncharted 2 is pretty good, pretty damn good. Though I have only gone off of what I have experienced via the multiplayer. Currently trying to get a week off from work to experience/at least rent it so I can see the single-player.

Your biggest assumption is that Game of the Year is decided by metacritic. It isn't. Game of the Year is decided by longstanding video game media, with many of the blogs and smaller sites and publications excluded. While I don't think Halo 3: ODST is a viable Game of the Year candidate, the majoring of the major gaming media gave the game impressively high scores. IGN, Gamespot, Game Informer, 1Up, Gamepro, Computer and Video Games, G4TV and Edge, all scored the game 90 or higher.

Do you realistically feel that Demon's Soul has a shot over Uncharted 2 for GOTY? I respect that Demon's Soul is an awesome game but the question here is about GOTY; thus, its going to be hard to match Uncharted 2 critical and commercial success, everyone's gonna play this game. The same can't be said for DS. The only realistic contender IMO is Modern Warfare 2.

Yes, Blazblue and Tekken 6 automatically beat SFIV since capcom is releasing SSFIV spring 2010 feels like an incomplete game now. The indestructable theme song takes it out of the GOTY running alone.

I mostly like what they are doing with SFIV though would not sell my copy at least not till I have SSFIV. they should of just had a SSIV add on.

Don't get it twisted I <3 SFIV but I call it like I see it. How are you going to let capcom milk you hardcore , with Unlockable content on the disc you got to pay for , then instead of releasing sweet SSFIV as an add on they put it out as a stand alone title your going to have to shell out for, thats just as bad as ODST not being an expansion. Not to mention Graphically it is not as Clean or vibrant as Blazblue and both games have smooth game mechanics.

Now look at Uncharted 1 , sweet SP. Then Uncharted 2 Sweet SP,MP,CO-OP, Cinema improved graphics etc. IMO I would think the game going above and beyond deserves the GOTY while the milking gets no nomination.

There really is no point in all the fuss. Uncharted 2 has raised the bar too high (from a technical and writing/storytelling aspect) for them not to get the award. It'd be a huge slap in the face if they don't get it and honestly, it wouldn't make any damn sense.

Games of the year should show advancement. Naughty Dog went above and beyond.

Honestly it's a done deal. I'd put my car on it, that's how much of a done deal I believe it to be ha.

Throw in Wii games, throw in PS2 games, heck throw in any handheld game and it wouldn't matter to me as long as they are original, proper games but when you throw a 4-hours-long expansion pack that is Halo ODST, THAT pisses me off. While you are at it, why not add the KZ2 DLC, Valkyria Chronicles DLC, GTAIV DLC as well.

GAME OF THE YEAR can only go to a NEW video game. It could be a sequel, it could be a new IP or a ground-up remake of an old IP but it CAN NOT, I repeat, it CAN NOT be an expansion pack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 will destroy Uncharted 2. Without question. Uncharted 2 is nothing more than a glorified Gears of war clone with platforming and shall never be on the level of games like Halo, GTA IV or Gears due to it's lack of originality. The gameplay is jacked right from Gears, everything down to how the weapon select looks. It's sort of a mix of a bunch of games that already exist, and that's working against it. The amount of 10/10s it has gotten is ridiculous and makes me question humanity, I'll never trust reviewers apart from GameTrailers.

Killzone 2 GOTY? Maybe, I really enjoyed Killzone 2 despite it's focus on its multiplayer experience rather than it's story.

Demon Souls GOTY? No. There is hardly a story present, the music and sound effects are virtually non-existent and the battle mechanics are clunky.

Oh I agree. It's remarkable how games evolve in the matter of months on PS3. I would say the same for 360 games but for some reason the same progress doesn't apply. I really liked Infamous by the way but as we go along screen tear and pop-up really shouldn't be in a GOTY. And although Demon's Souls has absolutely no chance of winning because gaming is like politics, it would be cool if they created a "2nd place GOTY" award basically in honor of that game because the real hardcore gamers are the true gamers and every real gamer that has played it knows the real.

RE5? I enjoyed it a lot but I don't think it's GOTY material.
Batman? Its success was short-lived
Halo ODST? Haven't played it, but it's not really a full game so I doubt it.
Killzone 2? Pretty enjoyable online, but had its flaws.
Uncharted 2? Highest rated exclusive this gen, awesome from start to finish.

there were a lot of WTF moments in Uncharted 2.. not just the gun fights but also the platforming.. but it felt like i've played it before.. maybe because of inFamous, which has a lot of similarities including the controls

Ok, I see that we needed to have at least one game exclusive to the Xbox on this list. For whatever reason that is. But no, no freakin way is Halo in the running for anything. That game is a 12 year old boys kick butt level of gaming.

We can how ever see:

UC2 ( clear winner )

Batman ( PS3 version because of DLC and Joker play )

KZ2 ( epic graphic's, great DLC and online support )

Demon's Soul ( sold out everywhere! Very underestimated game. A true gamers game with epic battles, many features and online play )

Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition ( High very high marks last year for GOTY. Now you get all the DLC for free. )

17 - Demons souls is the best.

Fable 2 was critically acclaimed until it was released.
Turned out the online failed horribly & the story was stupid.
The graphics was average & the combat was broken & cheap & unsatisfying.
Websites defended the sh1t out of thier reviews & some even named it goty.

And then there's Demons Souls. It massacred fable2 & mass effect at the same fckn time.
Mass effect has a great story I give it that but the gameplay ruined it.
Glitched step sounds, horrible graphics loading, retarded a.i, long loading & driving around the same dry scenery with predictable enemy. Managing inventory was a matter of dumping & combing the exact same items over & over again. It was more of a excuse of a game for a idea of a story.
It wasn't a rpg.

Closest action rpg to compare demons souls to is fable 2.
People really like that game. People should love demons souls.
Written messages instead of bread crumbs.
Co-op that works wonderfully.
Combat with so many unique combinations that it's totally unpredictable when facing a challenger online yet so fair.
A deep mystery of a story.
Graphics.
Very higly rated & even more loved by it's players.

Not giving demons souls at least rpg of the year will be such a injustice to the industry, developers & gamers all over the world. People need to know what just happened to the genre.
Atlus cracked it wide fckn open!

The only games released so far which are worthy of GOTY imho are

Batman: Arkham Asylum & Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

If I had to predict the other titles which will be GOTY worth, well the only other I can think of is Assassin's Creed 2..

Of course the COD fanboys (you know the ones, who still play COD4 & only COD4 every single day almost religiously) will say Modern Warfare 2.

Doing an "unofficial" poll this thread is dominated by 95% PS3 fans. Not a problem but I am starting to wonder if it is dominated by Log Cabin Republicans. Oh, any 360 fan get indunated with negatives.

I have both systems and the 360 is better, no doubt about it. The controller and set up are superior as are the 3rd party games. Now for exclusives; Uncharted 1 was awesome and Uncharted 2 is GOTY, so far. But Infamous? Really? Fun but repetitive and the graphics are just decent. As for KZ2 it controls so poorly, I have to have double jointed thumbs to play it, and it is so slow, beat and sold it.

Knocking Fable II? Why? Graphics bad? Seriously you all need to stop drinking the kool-aid. It is a great game and ODST while not GOTY is fun too. Everyone has an opinion but so does Glenn Beck, and that is what this sight feels like, a FOX News partisanathon! Both systems have great games for every Uncharted there is Mass Effect and so on.
