Alan Wake could've been released much earlier says director, been in development since 2005

Gamesthirst writes: Not many can remember when Alan Wake was announced; that's how long the title has been in the making, in fact speaking to EGTV managing director of Remedy Entertainment Matias Myllyrinne said jokingly, "some of your parents might remember when we initiated the project," he said. It's no joke for Xbox 360 owners who've been waiting on this title for years, however according Matias, Remedy entertainment has been working tirelessly to make sure Alan Wake pans out be the blockbuster it should.

In an interview with EGTV Matias Mylllyrinne fielded some questions to which he gave honest answers:

EGTV: It's been in the works for a while... is the tech still up to scratch?

Sales are very important, even if the game is good. If a metacritic average 92 sells very few copies, do you expect a sequel? Think 'Beyond Good and Evil'. Also if sales are bad, it hurts the company as a whole.

I was really interested in Alan Wake before this past E3 but now that I've seen the actual game, I'm not impressed at all and my hype meter went down to around zero. The game looks incredibly underwhelming especially considering how grand it was going be according to Remedy. I literally LOL'd at how cheesy the game seemed and how the mediocre "creepy" moments were presented. Not to mention the flashlight looked bad and it was clearly a rip off of the Resident Evil laser-sight aiming mechanic.

I remember when Don Mattrick announced it was time for the Alan Wake presentation, the crowd clapped and cheered loudly but after the presentation was done and the developer did their wrap up speech, the attendees clapped in a lax manner that resinated their disappointment.

Not all games can be gems, I suppose.

1.16 - You know what's funny?
When Fanboys used to talk about KZ2, and how long it was in development. Now i LOL'ed hard on this...there was no way the game was able to be released anytime..even at E3 it didn't look polished enough. With the long length of development on this title i expect graphics, and gameplay better than KZ2....uuurm wait..360 isn't that powerful enough? So all i'm saying is Allen wake could be the death of ps3 fans in terms of graphics...it's been almost 5 years Allen...and if you can't measure up to the first installment of uncharted, i feel sorry for you.....uncharted 2 was developed less than 2 years, and has "ONE" of the best console graphics....yeah i know i ranted, but had to get this off my chest...i've been waiting for Allen Wake for too long.

Ausbo - 72 days 4 hours ago
1.17 - @factual evidence
why are you bringing uncharted into an alan wake xbox 360 article.
Alan wake has been in development for a long time, mostly because of creating a new engine.
Killzone turned out great after such a long wait, Gran Turismo looks great after 5 years of dev time. This can be a great game.

Ps. Uncharted 2 looks so good because they didn't start from scratch, they had the framework and just improved on the first
Shut this user up Let user speak
Greywulf - 72 days 4 hours ago
1.18 - Factual, the best part about alan wake taking longer than Gran Turismo to be made is that all the main excuse of why the graphics sucked have been removed by the developers themselves.
1. Open World
- The 360 couldn't handle the open world explorable world with realtime weather and night cycles. So the game is linear now, and the visuals are still not on the level of Uncharted1.

So now we are here, with a product that the onlythign someone can say is significant is its "LIGHTING", in the dark? Phenomenal.

Now of course we will get the people that go "BUH GRAPHICS DONT MEAN ANYTHING" clearly, alone they dont. BUt combined with amazing gameplay like MGS4/Killzone2/Uncharted/Uncha rted2/Motorstorm2/Ratchet/Resi s tance/etc, its easy to see that good graphics + good gameplay make great products.

The fact is the 360 can't outpower the PS3 overall visually, just when the PS3 is forced to run the same code that works on the 360. Then you get an insignificant difference that expert geeks have to discover with software.

I mean, thats the reality.

Alan Wake & Splinter Cell are both taking longer than KZ2/Uncharted, and they miss the mark completely. And I dont buy the argument that they are polishing the gameplay when SC was redone from scratch, and Wake removed a gigantic gaming feature.

Edit:

Ausbo, More excuses...

Ratchet & Clank is more advanced than Alan Wake, plus its damn near open world. Started From scratch.

Uncharted 1 = started from scratch and still runs circles around ALan Wake.

You can come up with millions of excuses on why the 360 has yet to show a product that is technically superior to any PS3 exclusive, but have you forgotten that the 360 is "SO EASY TO DEVELOP FOR" and had a year head start? M$ puts their money into advertising, not game technology.

you are right, I think everyone who owns a 360 should probably just sell it and get a ps3 because you make such well thought out, unbiased arguments.
You act like the game will suck because other games look better. Have you played it? then how do you know?
You compared it to some pretty great games, I think if it is half as good as those it will be a good game. If it is almost as good, then we have a great game on our hands. what is the problem? Oh that's right, you are a captain in a fictitious war on people who like other consoles... RELAX

Greywolf, Uncharted 1's cinemas weren't even realtime and the model you actually played as was cut down severely from that of the cinematics.

Alan Wake beats Uncharted in scale AND graphics very easy. It runs on the new X Engine, with which developers are now able to use Xenos' full capabilities. They kept certain features locked in their previous DX 9.0c subset API used the dev kits at the time.

Xbox 360 is going to be pushing graphics like you wouldn't believe. 3 16 pipeline shader arrays in a 48-way dual parallel unified shader core, with an additional 192 pixel processors provided by the 10MB of "intelligent memory" eDRAM. Support for tessellation is going to push geometry detail into the stratosphere.

You can't argue the specs, there's sheer horsepower to be reckoned with in Xbox 360.

360 owners need to learn a very real lesson here.

Stop talking about graphics when the only titles you can come up with start and end with the Unreal Engine.

"Xbox 360 is going to be pushing graphics like you wouldn't believe"

Going to.. 5 years later and... nothing yet huh?

1.27 - Apoc, Whos pretending the cut scenes look nothing like the gameplay? We aren't talking about a 360 game here.
Uncharted 1's gameplay runs over all things the 360 could produce.
Uncharted 2's gameplay runs over all things the 360 could produce.
Killzone2's gameplay runs over all things the 360 could produce.
Gran Turismo's Demo runs all over all things the 360 could produce.

The cut scenes/replay mode all use the same models, and the in-game visuals are impossible to run on the 360.

Again, name some games. Or drop the subject. We both know you cant, which is why im enjoying you trying to compare UC2 to UC1, you know damn well you cant compare it to ODST or Gears lol, or hell.. even alan wake.

Edit:

Apoc,

so you cant name a game in the 360's 5 year library that looks better than Uncharted1. lol.

You also cant point out the argument that only Uncharteds cut scenes look better than 360 games, that the gameplay differs.

Then the best part:

"Patrick: The characters in Uncharted are some of the most impressive video game models to date. They look even more impressive up close in the cutscenes. Are the in-game models any different from the cutscene models?

Richard: Thanks! Nope, the in game models are the exact same models that are used in the cutscenes. They also use the exact same textures. There really is no difference between them at all.The only difference between the cutscenes and in game is a little higher quality lighting and shadowing. Hopefully not too noticeably different. We really wanted to keep the players immersed as much as possible. This meant using the same assets across the board."

So Apoc what were u saying again.. your first response to me was all kinds of wrong, blathering about cutscenes. Proven wrong now is the time you want to hide behind n4g rules?

1.29 - Apoc, the gameplay.. let me repeat for you since you're trying to be blind.
THE GAMEPLAY OF UNCHARTED2 AND UNCHARTED1 is more advanced than anything the 360 can run.

Again

THE GAMEPLAY of Uncharted2/Uncharted1/Gran TUrismo 5 prologue/Killzone2/MGS4 is all more advanced than anything the 360 can run.

Keep talking about CutScenes all you want, since you brought them up? The images are captured in-engine. Like the replays you can export to youtube.

They are realtime because they aren't PRE-RENDERED in a software package like MAYA or 3DSTUDIO MAX. Like Halo commercials/Gears commercials.

The fact that you know you cant name any 360 games, but insist on arguing Cutscenes is so sad. Sure, Killzone2 doesn't impress you.. yet you cant name a single console game that Graphically more impressive can ya?

This is me:

Uncharted1 is better looking & more advanced than anything the 360 can even load.

This is you:

Buh buh the cutscenes aren't realtime.

This is me:

The game itself, is better looking and more advanced than anything the 360 can load.

This is you:

But theres 102 minutes of cut scenes!

You want to avoid trying to name any 360 game that trumps it, because you know the entire world will laugh at you. And you want to pretend theres some false notion that Uncharted's cutscenes look 900x better than the gameplay, which they dont. Same with GT5p's replays vs ingame. Same models, and the same excuses from you.

In the future, stop using the tired uninformed excuse that PS3's games have to do model swaps to run on underwhelming hardware, thats for 360 games.

You need to realize that in Uncharted 1, they recorded what supposed to be in realtime in video form to hide loading screens. That was the main purpose in the first game.

It doesn't matter anyway because Uncharted 2 cutscenes are all IN-game and in realtime which makes your whole argument null and voided.

Wulf, I can list several games.

Bioshock is one that comes to mind, it really pushed detail for its time and even had an option to disable vsync so that you could play in the highest FPS. So it has graphics, and it's an FPS...easy formula right? Not exactly...because that's where 2K just throws the book out. Plasmids? Splicers?? 50's theme??? Just for being that unique you'd think it'd just hit the bargain bin...but it didn't. Bioshock is something else.

Mass Effect also comes to mind. It had issues and wasn't held back long enough to iron out those issues, but everywhere else it shined. It has a sophisticated and very well thought out story. Its facial animation and character dubbing have yet to be rivaled. Its sheer ambition still unmatched.

Halo 3 still ranks as my alltime favorite FPS just for it having the tightest console FPS controls in existence. It took on Resistance and its sequel...it took on COD 4, KillZone 2, TimeShift, Crysis, Section 8, Metroid Prime 3, and every other FPS to come after and still none of them have been able to approach the loyalty and admiration that Halo 3 has earned. Maybe COD4 :D

Lost Odyssey is one fine jRPG brought on by Mystwalker that managed to carry the proven excellence of Squaresoft's former head (and during their better days) Hironobu Sakaguchi. I'd actually just as well mention Blue Dragon just for the fact that it reminds me so much of why Toriyama still has a name in this industry. Both games rank very well against the higher profile projects by Squeenix.

Turn 10 may have earned a rep for being loudmouthed and forgetful of its place, yet Forza Motorsport is a brand of racing game that took community to heart. Right off the bat this gen they made sure that the player was treated to not only customization options and online gaming but incredible detail and superb physics. Forza MS 2 is serious enough to be considered a sim, deep enough to keep playing even after 3 comes out.

Capcom's Lost Planet, Resident Evil 5, and DMC 4 while multiplatform still prove that Xbox 360 can do insane graphics. It's actually funny, because for some reason they came out slightly better in their 360 versions. MT Framework is one amazing engine and I suspect that it's the reason why RE5 puts some incredibly insane polygon counts onscreen and why Lost Planet 2 looks so amazing...in fact so does the original, even today!

Even Squeenix has done some fine work with their proprietary engines on both consoles. Once again, yes it's multiplatform but that doesn't take away from the fact that Xbox 360 can do HD gaming. Games like Last Remnant, Infinite Undiscovery, and Project Sylpheed might seem like crumbs from the leftovers of FF XIII's budget but they're actually pretty spot on examples of what they can do. I think they're pretty good rpgs...but it's funny that Mystwalker should be beating them at their own game right now, lol.

Konami...well they DID release Rumble Roses XX on Xbox 360 way back then, lol. We never got to see what Kojima could do with a bigger budget and enough time...I do have some pretty high expectations for MGS Rising. And I hope his recent quotes of showing interest in Natal might result in his actually producing a game for it. It's speculation at best but it's still a future prospect.

So I've done more than name a few games. I've given you a pretty good reason to own an Xbox 360. And there's more to come from all of the developers I've listed. Sure, most of it is multiplatform. But just like you PS3 fanboys insisted on believing in Sony's waiting game, I say let's wait and see what 2010-2011 hold for Xbox 360.

edit at wulf:

I answered that question above in one of my edits :)

It's your point to force me to list games with better graphics and see me fail. I only wish you had the sight to see that really it's a foolish argument. Believe what you want to, but stop trying force your beliefs on other people. You "believe" that those games have better graphics. It's your opinion, it's not fact.

You need to stop forcing your opinions where they don't belong. The left nut has fallen...I strongly advise you to go now before the right nut makes its appearance. And the mighty rod that follows.

I know your kind of being bombarded, but I gotta throw in my two cents:

Frankly, the list you gave was pretty weak. Bioshack looked great but it was kind of boring. You see how that could be relative? Not a great argument.

When it comes to Mass Effect, there has not been a better RPG this generation. The only flaw it had was animation and MASSIVE pop-in.

Halo 3 was an OK game. I love Halo:CE, but the series still has yet to live up to the original.

Lost Odyssey- Great story telling, poor gameplay.

The fact is that the 360 has not had game that push visually the way many PS3 exclusive have. And even though the 360 has Mass Effect in it's corner, Sony's first and second party studios have been the bench mark of quality this generation.

ShadowFlare thinks he's right.

Greywulf thinks he's right.

Both wrong, Uncharted Drake's Fortune uses CG movies for its cinemas. Check the first 10 minutes video I linked, you'll see the differences. The cinema that plays has no problem loading textures, but the actual gameplay right after (when you start playing) does. You'll see texture pop in and the models are much lower detailed than the ones used in the cinemas.

Frankly, naughty dog themselves said they use in-game models for the cut-scenes. Why the hell should i listen to you? And looking at the huge amount of graphical masterpieces coming from the ps3, why is it that hard to believe?
