Tales of Vesperia PS3 port sells 147K copies on opening day

Nick @ PS3Center writes:

Earlier this week, the long awaited PS3 port of Tales of Vesperia went on sale in Japan. Preliminary sales figures for the title are in, and the early reports suggest that the title moved an astounding 147,000 copies it's first day. For reference, the XBox 360 version sold 71,000 units in it's debut and finished with 106,000 copies opening week, shifting roughly 140,000 units before dropping off charts 2 weeks later.

Wow, didn't expect it to do that well. Thought it would perform evenly with the 360 version.

The PS3 already had 3X the install base. Though the real insult will be if it sells 500K.

It Took only one day to beat out 360's overall sales of this game?!
I know there are more PS3 owners in Japan, but its just the fact that this is a one year old port that out sold its original release on day one is Impressive!

Proof that the Playstation is home of the JRPG something we knew at the beginning of this console war. MS were deluding themselves trying to take a part of this market and only hurting the consumer. Hopefully this finally shows jap developers the truth and they think twice before taking bribes from MS in future. I mean thanks to MS they even started porting to wii...

look
if you want a game to sell on the 360
just make it a shooter ( FPS or 3rd-PS )
or just slap the name "halo" on it

1.5 - If you console was built for online and shooters....
Then it comes to no surprise with the JRPG games is selling less than stellar for the 360.

PS3 on the other hand is built for many genres, most popular would be platforming and RPG's, this article is just as relevant as why shooters are selling more on the 360.

As for this game, English VA is unnecessary for me, just give the original Japanese VA and English subs and it would retain the JRPG quality. Of course, I'm not shooting down the English VA, I prefer the game comes with all positive aspects to it.

The Japanese identify with the PS brand with the newest and most current RPGs. I'm not calling the 360 version a failure, but most Japanese identify with the PS brand to deliver the RPGs they want. Most Japanese don't identify with XBox as a brand and most would identify with their homegrown PS brand. The truth is coming with games like Star Ocean 4 International and Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2. With every PS that comes, it takes time to make the RPGs that count on the system, the PS3 is no different. Now that the system is making ground, it doesn't surprise me that Japaneses publishers are making the move to the PS platform. It almost seems as if the XBox crowd is a test bunch for the finalised PS3 versions of games. I don't think the 360 is a bad area for games. But the Japanese have spoken.

Again, may I ask why the hell these rpgs were on the 360 in the first place?

The Playstation brand sells rpgs. These developers should have been focusing on the PS3 Day One.

Give the 360 version some credit. It sold a lot for a beta! And 360 owners were good enough to pay to beta test it for us!

1.13 - "360 owners were good enough to pay to beta test it for us!"
I'm certain JP 360 owners, who were being given no other option at the time, were realy happy about that.

That's why they were burning copies of the game.

I hate the new trend of calling 360 gamers "beta testers."

They're not all fanboys. They enjoy games just like every one of us. If you're going to talk trash, at least *try* to be creative about it :/

Unless Microsoft is willing to hand out some nice cheques for development to reimburse the developers, then I don't think we'll be seeing many more "exclusive" jrpgs for the xbox.

ceedubya9 - 67 days 23 hours ago
4.3 - There shouldn't be
any exclusive RPGs anyway, unless they are made in house.

On another note, I love it how some people here like to knock on the 360 not being a good console for JRPGs......when other than Japan, JRPGs aren't doing all that great on the PS3 either.

With that out of the way, I'm hoping this comes over to the US. I already have the 360 version, but I'd be willing to give it another shot on PS3 with substantial extra content. Its a good game, and PS3 owners everywhere should have the chance to play it.

JRPGS sell almost(if not the same) as much in the US as they sell in japan
PS3

Valkyria Chronicle: 220,000 japan 220,000 USA

360 is the same
Tales of Vesperia: 170,000 JP 180,000 US

"That the PS3 versions sell less than the Xbox 360 originals. For example, both Lost Planet and Eternal Sonata sale lower sales in Japan when their PS3 versions were released." - Kotaku

5 - Too bad it'll never leave Japan
=O

@jjl
Every Tales game ever re-released. Plus, Tales of Vesperia is one of the very few Tales games to leave Japan. Symphonia got an amazing re-release on the PS2 with extra features, but never came out in the US. Even though it sold pretty well on the Gamecube and was guaranteed to sell better on the PS2 since it had such a huge fanbase.

Not sure why people are disagreeing with the truth.

@Pope_John_Paul_II
I really doubt it's ever leaving Japan. However, I really hope it does. I stopped playing the 360 version when the PS3 version was announced. Well....I hope it comes out soon, it ever =D

@Sarcasm

And as unlikely as Final Fantasy XIII going to the 360. I get what you're trying to say. We'll just have to wait and see.

That statement is about as accurate as

"Tales of Vesperia never coming to PS3"
"Star Ocean never coming to PS3"
"Eternal Sonata never coming to PS3"

It's not unlikely that it will come to the U.S.

5.5 - Main reason why you're wrong,
If Namco doesn't bring it over, Atlus will. Even if Namco is wholly blind to the JRPG fanbase outside of JP, Atlus isn't.
Shut this user up Let user speak
TheDesperado - 68 days 3 hours ago
5.6 - It will come overseas unless Namco hates money
And after seeing how PS3 sales just destroyed 360 LTD sales of the title within one day/one week, they're gonna want to put it on the winning HD console in Europe, the PS3. They'll get many more sales that way. In fact, just drop 360 support altogether. People will sell their 360s and buy PS3s and Namco doesn't have to waste money on Microsoft.

Though Namco Bandai hasn't officially made any announcements in regards to a US or European release, the English voice cast of Tales of Vesperia was recently called back to the studio to voice new scenes, imply that it will be released here.

Kamikaze-why, then are the English speaking cast back in recording extra cutscenes? Tales came to all countries on the 360 and with the weak presence of that console in mainland EU(making a practically untouched market for Namco) I'm certain that, with this news, it is coming-before it I would have agreed it's unlikely but not now as it's a cert.

I know you want to deflate people looking forwards to the game on PS3 for some reason but it doesn't now look like PS3 owners in the west will be left out of the ToV party.
