Grand Theft Auto IV, first week sales: Halo 3 is still the champion

Now that one week has gone since GTA IV release, the statistic for the GTA IV sales the first week has been released on vgchartz.com.
If we take GTA IV on both consoles and compares it with Halo 3, then GTA IV would of course win, but since Halo 3 is exclusive for Xbox 360, should we not compare GTA IV side by side with Halo 3 one console at a time?
Well then it shows that GTA IV has sold about 3.3 millions copies on Xbox 360, and about 2.65 million copies on PS3.
The conclusion is still that Halo 3 is the leader of first week sales with a crushing 3.75 million copies sold the first week

combined sales surpass halo 3. But 360 sales do not. Halo 3 had more marketing power and is an exclusive game so this really shouldn't surprise anyone.

decline? 360 sales have increased in europe do to the price cut, 360 has taken back NA, and game sales continue to dominate all gaming platforms combined.

sonarus: declined is a fantasy word for PS3 fans that still live in denial, while driving to work everyday in never never land.

"decline" would be Blu-Ray movie and stand alone player sales, the 360 has been nothing but progressive from day one.

But they are not selling as much as they were when halo 3 came out. Hence the sales declined as expected once the halo effect wore off.

Overall yr to yr, their sales are about the same, maybe a little bit more maybe a little bit less but they are still being outsold by a more expensive console? So go figure

Eh, marketing doesn't really draw nongamers in,

Most non-gamers I've converted have been due to first hand experience, time with the Guitar Hero controller, dance pad, DS, etc.

Then again, it's easier for them to jump in because there are those cheap plug and play things as a gateway drug into gaming.
I got my 6 year old cousin one for her birthday, a week later, my aunt and uncle are going, ok what exactly do we need to play this. (referring to my console version of GHIII) and of course the answer is a lot simpler than they think.

Of course more non-gamers are talking about it because of the face time on news and magazines, not cause of the marketing. Heck, even local news stations are interested, and not in that "Look at this weird thing" No, they are treating it like a big movie launch.

Please show me what site says GTA on 360 sold more than Halo 3 in their first weeks.

This is the first I've heard of it. Lol but it's pretty funny when everyone whines about how disappointing GTA is and how its not working for them, but when its put up against Halo 3 is it GOD!

EDIT - I agree sonarus, when FOX news covers GTA its the highest selling game breaking every record. But was my article not right?

Halo 3 generated 300 million first week? GTA was projected to generate 400million. For it to surpass halo 3, it would have had to outsell ps3 version 3-1. No one expected the 360 GTA sales to surpass halo but WE ALL expected ps3+360 sales to surpass Halo3 as it obviously did

You are right, Halo is 15 and GTA is 18 (in the U.K). I would also imagine that the lack of getting blowjobs from Hookers and running over old ladies in Halo3 may have helped parents under pressure to buy the game for younger children than 15 too.

because Halo 3 was exclusive to Xbox 360. If it was multi-platform...who know which would be KING? I would have bought it for PS3. I have Halo and Halo 2 on PC, and I love those games.

Edit: By the way, the only GTA games I have are GTA2 (the old one) on the pc, and GTA3 on PS2. I'm just not that into them. Thought about GTA4 to see how the multiplayer is, but I did not make the leap...yet.

8 - Well is shows that great games with good marketing sell,,,,

Halo 1 was an unbelievable game for me. I don't know how much time me and my mates spent playing on it when we were in Halls at uni. coop mode and Mp were immense.

Halo 3 sold because it was also immense. finished 1plyr,2plyr coop and 4plyr coop on legendary.Not to mention making new maps (ie mongoose race tracks etc) and videos to show off to mates. Then killed the mp(all modes) and still play it now.

Thats why it sold so well coupled with the marketing campaign. So tired of people trying to make out that it was solely the ads that made it sell so well. Bet most of those stating this have never played Halo not mention pgr or any of the other Ms exc. SHELTERED...SAD REALLY.

P.s i had a ps2/gc last gen but loved playing my mates xbox for these titles alone.

11 - GTAIV Deserves all the praise and sales it been getting.

Playing that game i just get lost. got a silver Huntley sport, Black bmw m3 look alike and a red corvette look a like.

Driving is more challenging this time and more realistic,the weather the animations, the story all the things you can do while not actually performing missions. Just started to use the internet cafe.

Ahhh Loving this game.

Edit: I wonder what MGS4 sales will be like will it beable to conquer the Halo 3 sales record?

P.s Noticed a lot of talk about killzone 2 and although i admit it looks really great that game is 9 months away. I wanna talk about games this year that ill be playing soon. Thinking/talking about next years games is kinda of pointless when we still have so much to come this year.

NINJA GAIDEN 2 VS MGS4 next on my radar.

Wonder which one will get the higher rating/sales?

Think it will be Mgs4 due to the name but right now im a bit more stoked for ninja gaiden2 because i have a hankering for some brutal fast paced action/slash em up.

Wonder whether Mgs4 will live up to the hype with ratings and sales?

you have to understand one thing..Halo 3 was known as a repition game.. (i dont own a 360, just listen to my 360 friends) it was just nothing new in the game..the only good thing was Theather Mode...but GTA4...thats an epic story...everything is new in this game, yeah sure, maybe you will get a cutscene, and say kill a dude..but it will never get bored..its opened-ended and the closest thing to real...so what if it was 0.6 million short of Halo 3? T2 and R* can brag all they want..they broke records!!!! and it will continue to sell...i only speak facts..research on you games with gaming websites...

edit @below: yeah i play GTA1-GTA:SA..so i know what i am talking about..have you played GTA4? you didnt notice the difference in the gaming? i mean when you think about it..what game sequels are different? arent all the games the same? like i stated GTA4 deserves to be a nominee for GOTY...

I was sure that GTA IV would take the world record for sales in 24hrs from Halo 3, but it's a sure thing that GTA IV will take it in total sales. There isn't anything else out there that could have done it without the names Mario, Zelda, Final Fantasy, or GTA in the title.

Those are worldwide multiplatform numbers, this is about sales numbers for a single platform. Did you even read the article?

There are "no" global first day sales numbers for Halo 3, just US. The record I was referring to was for "US, SINGLE PLATFORM", where Halo 3 still holds the record. The record GTA IV took was this one here http://www.microsoft.com/pr... total worldwide all platforms.

You know if you actualy read the article you would have known what they were talking about. Next time read the damn thing before jumping in with links and wearing your "Super Spin Mode Super Cape"....?

Stupid me I was counting combined sales of GTA4.

Roughly combined user-base of 31 million with the 360/ps3.

Halo 3 got balls....it might of been the best advertised game this gen. Only MS could pull that off.

This might be the highest grossing multi-platform game upon debut for a while, but who is going to TOP Halo as an EXCLUSIVE game?

Yeah I think if we see something great from the Gears of War 2 trailers, it's gonna be NOV 2006 all over X2, plus add Ms ads and a little bit of Dews.

I know pre-orders will be around 1-2 million. EPIC know how to hype thier games as well. But they are hardworking devs though.

so Gears 2, GT5 and probably FF13 will have some of the biggest impact, quite frankly they are Proven Games. The last of big 3rd-party franchises from Sony.

Halo fans are spinning it. People normally look at overall sales to see how suscessfull a game is. The fact is GTA4 sold more and that it. I didn't say anything about people claiming that GTA4 won't outsell Halo3. To think GTA4 won't outsell Halo3 would have been very stupid.

Because GTA IV is not a first person shooter, now that being said I still believe it will go on to sell more then Halo 3 long term. This is a franchise that has done numbers like 14 million copies sold in the past. So long term I think it will out sell Halo 3.

Also for it to do over 2 million on PS3 in the first week shows it has a really good chance at being a best seller for the system. As one of the highest selling games ever for the system.

Time will tell, but my money's on the long term. (I feel it will surpass Halo 3 long term)

very true..i was expecting 1.5 million..but over 2mil? thats crazy! and i know that 360 would get more copies (Achievments, DLC, bigger install base)..and i am glad that these flame wars are over..now that everyone has the game, everyone is shut up and playing :)...i put in 15hrs already and got 30% so that means in another 15hrs i should get 60% whic h should get me around 50hrs..plus i am going to replay it, cuz i want to kill dywane this time (hope i dont spoil)
