60GB Xbox 360 Will Replace 20GB Model?

I actually wouldn't be surprised if they lower the price of the 20 GB model then quickly replace it with the 60 GB model, or vice-versa, as a sort of 1-2 punch, so that the 60 GB model is available for $300 or so.

..you actually were given 20gigs to use; BUT the software takes the 20gigs down to about 12-13gigs. I'm constantly erasing demos, and what-not to keep space available for new DLC. HD movies are usually too big for the space I have left, FF11 is too big now to download, and when the Conan MMO comes out I'm sure the 20giggers will be way too small. And Microsoft's HDD sold separately is way too overpriced right now. Been waiting for a price-drop on that forever now.

Especially since it's really only 13 or 14 after the OS is installed. In this day and age with downloadable games, dlc, and movies and music on your system, you need more than 20. At least 40. 60 is a great number for MS. Hopefully they drop the price on that 120 gb drive.

If 18 million gamers are using it, we wont miss one. Anway its just the inherent bias of true fanboy of other console which is not letting them buy 360 for all its games and other features. At this price and now with lesser issues concerning the hardware a true gamer should not miss out on buying one if they have spare change.

Seriously. While the 20GB HDD is enough room most of the time, every now and then it gets a little tight on space for my taste. Especially if you want to DL a HD movie off the marketplace you have to clear about 5-7gigs of space. However right now the only other option is to get a severely overpriced 120GB HDD for $180, besides being overpriced this is bigger than I need.

Since I stream all my movies and music from my computer the only thing I need the HDD for is Demos,XBLA,DLC and the occasional video rental. This is where a 60GB HDD really would be perfect for my needs. It's just knowing that this thing will be at least $100 that makes it bitter sweet.

maybe not everyone shares your view that the 360 is something that just can't be missed. as mentioned many times before, most of the really good

Although you make a good point, your point can easily be countered with by first saying, the crap that you guys have been telling yourselves about the 360 only having FPS is just that.."CRap"
There are plenty of games out there that are not FPS, there are also at least 34 games out on the 360 that are 1 million sellers 12 of this for which are multi-million unit sellers, while the PS3 and Wii have about 8(4) and 20(9) respectively. Are the million unit sellers on considered good/great games?

Second, A person in the market for a gaming console may not necessarily care about the latest in HD video, they may just want great games (that of which not even you can deny the 360 has, unless you "R" being a fanboy.)

Third, this "said person" could want to play online, but he/she wants what is currently the best online service. Me for one see XBL as worth every penny of the 50.00 it cost per year. When you give it a reasonable look, it comes out to 14 cents a day. You can't play one single game at an arcade for 14 cents per game let alone 14 cents per day. Which makes this online for free argument an argument but, a weak one.

Now, when you look at a game console from a standpoint of whether a person can do without it, then I guess all consoles fall into that category. Neither are a "must have" for anyone. But, if a person has been wanting a console all this time and had to money to spare, a 60 gig 360 for the price that a 20 gig model use to cost seems like a pretty good deal. Not to mention if the rumors of a price cut is true, the unit would be even cheaper.

So, to be honest with you, your comments about "the winning HD format", "wanting a reliable system", and not wanting to pay to play online are all valid, however the intent behind your comment was presented purely (IMO) as fanboyism.

So, instead of trying to deter everyone, why can't you admit that getting 40 gig more HD space is a good thing. I mean, isn't that the argument you guys used when the PS3 went from 60 to 80?

when i had my 360, my favorite games were Dead Rising and Gears. those were some of best games i've ever played....BUT...those were the only games i really enjoyed on the system and thats my point.

both systems have FPS and every other genre of games, and if you like FPS, 360 is your main console. i don't really like FPS, but i did get CoD4 and Resistance and enjoyed them. on the flip side i got UT3 and hated it (i really only got it to show support for the devs for allowing mods on the PS3). i'm looking forward to titles like KZ2 and Resistance2 but i'm 20x's more excited for MGS4, SOCOM, The Agency, LBP, GoW 3 and FFXIII. those are the types of games i'm really looking forward to playing.

games are the most important thing to me when i comes to buying a system. yes, if you look at all the overall games for both systems, 360 has more higher rated games that PS3. but as i stated in another thread, it means nothing to me that Bioshock, Halo 3, or Orange Box got perfect scores because i wouldn't buy them anyway, i don't like FPS. to me, if looked at the reviews and had to pick between Uncharted and Halo, i'd pick Uncharted because i know what i like. that throws your who has the best games argument out the window. i might get another 360 for some games i'm looking forward to but they are very limited: Mass Effect, Gears 1 & 2, Too Human, Dead Rising 1 & 2. i go for the system that has the most games i like and not the system that has the most games.

paying for Live is an individual decision. i just don't believe, in principle, of having to pay just to play online with others. if you pay for internet service, you shouldn't have to pay extra to use it. thats just my view. the money isn't an issue.

the HDD issue is funny. i think its good that the 360 could be getting a larger HDD. i don't think 20gb is enough, the add-on is expensive and if this does happen, i might get that sku. but i have been against the PS3 going from 60gh to 80gb because thats not alot and its already really easy to upgrade. so you'd be wrong saying i'm for the different HDD sizes for the PS3. i put a $60 120gb in mine and use the 60gb that came with it as an external. so for the record, going from 20 to 60 is good, 60 to 80 is bad, 60 to 180 is the best.

lastly, everyone may not need HD video.....but i do. i just got my second hdtv and i want to use it to its fullest potential, that means blu-ray. that may not be important to most, but it is to me and thats what i was talking about in my first post.

I cannot agree with u more, my home electronics still work after 10+ years. I dont care what warranty you have on the hardware, it shouldn't be like this. Sure after 7 yrs, I have to put my PS1 upside and sideways to play but it still plays perfectly fine and was modded with a chip. PS2 was not modded and plays just fine, just the 3 color cable a bit worn out and I am too lazy to replace it so gotta jiggle the end a bit to get the signals now, and of course all the SNES, Genesis, all that crap still works...after like what? 20 yrs?? So..what is the excuse for RROD?

I don't care what game is on it, I am not going to pigpeon hole myself into the return and fix fiasco, i don't have much time to play, let alone repair time.

For all we know, they could come out with a completely new model that has all of the previous problems completely fixed. Really the "sad" part of it all. Is a majority of customers would not really know the "strengths" of each system and merely compare the HDD size. They would look at the 360 with a 60 and the PS3 with a 40 and "assume" the 360 is a better value since it has a bigger HDD for less money. The advantage for MS being that this kind of customer would likely be unaware of PS3's Blu Ray capability.

Big companies know things like this and will exploit it. So yes this is exactly what they are doing, and yes it is a smart marketing move.

The PS3 needs to install 5GB for 25 minutes on games to have loading speeds just as fast as the 360 does because of a megaslow loading BluRay drive... I guess format pushing from Sony wasn't the best future proof choice, is it?

The 360 thus needs less HDD space. I have the 20GB version and its enough for demo's/video's etc. After some time I delete the old demos if I bought the game or the demo sucks.

Thus: you fail. The PS3 has a slow BluRay drive and needs 5GB for some games to get normal loading speeds. So a 40GB PS3 is done after 6 games and some demos/videos added.

Out of curiosity, is anyone else tired of all the SKU crap in this console war? It's one thing for a console to undergo significate hardware revisions once or twice in its lifetime in order to lower the manufacturing costs (see: PS2, PSP, DS, PS1, etc.), but this is getting ridiculous.

Maybe I'm alone here, but I don't want 3 or 4 versions of the same damn console. I enjoy console gaming because of its simplicity compared to PC gaming.

I tried to explain the backwards compatability thing for the PS3 to someone and it's just insane:

"Well there's the 60 GB and the 20 GB that came out first and have full backwards compatability and then the 80 GB one came out but it uses software emulation so it only has SOME backwards compatability and then the 40 GB one came out and it has NO backwards compatability."

And that's after a *year* of the PS3 being on the market. And what if Microsoft releases a 360 with an internal Blu-ray drive as rumored? Do we really need to add THAT confusion to the pile too?

The strength of console gaming is the simplicity. You buy the system, throw in the game, and you know it works just as well on your console as it does on the millions of others.

Just look at the recent Bully issues on the 360. Apparently it might happen on older 360's but not on newer ones? Is that really what we've come to in console gaming? This is the crap I tried to get *away* from when I went *back* to console gaming.

We seem to be losing that this generation - and I don't like it one bit.

Sure it doesn't have a built-in Blueray or wifi, but thats a good thing. If they woulda put in a HD drive, it woulda been an HD-DVD and it would have flopped. WiFi... pfft. Serious Gamers don't use WiFi to game. Latency on wifi is horrible. Trust me I know I'm an IT Administrator and have all those Cisco certification thingy-mab-bobbies. Your best connection is a wired cable. Microsoft did the smart thing and made it optional because most xbox fans are serious gamers and wouldn't use WiFi anyway. So why pay for an accessory I would never use?

As far as various sku's... the 360 only has 1 model. They don't vary in any way except what they come bundled with. Microsoft has various "BUNDLES" but the console is the exact same. You can buy an Arcade and make it into an Elite. And as with anything, the more you bundle the more you save.

I DO agree that the add-ons are too overpriced though. ~$200 for a 120gb drive??!?!!! Even the WiFi adapter is expensive. I think they need to put a 20gb in the Arcade, 60gb in the Pro, and 120gb in the Elite. I would think it would be wise to allow users to change drives as well.

BUT the console comes standard with what most gamers will want/need.

with the 360:

1) HDMI has not been in every model since the beginning, not until after the PS3 launched.

2) WiFi is a necessity, for me. the way me house is setup and where my PS3 and tv is, i don't have an easy way to plug it in. i agree you might not have the fastest connection, but i've been playing over WiFi and i haven't had any problems, at all. if you care to test this, try me in Warhawk.

also, everytime i'm online, it isn't to play games. sometimes it cool to just to be able to go online and check things. having WiFi enables me to be where ever i am in my house and i don't have to worry about a cable. and of course, the option is always there if i want to plug it in, and if i want WiFi, its already built in and there's nothing else to buy. also, i'm thinking of buying another PS3 for the hdtv in my bedroom and i don't have to worry about how to setup everything around plugging it in so i have internet acccess.

3) the HDD in the 360 is not easily swapped out like the PS3's. yes you can upgrade but only to MS's HDD which, as you noted, are expensive. i bought a 120gb HDD for $60 and put it in my PS3 awhile ago. when the 360 Elite was announced, my first thouhgt was, "wow, thats the same thing i already have but mine plays blu-ray."

4) 360 skus: Arcade/Core, Premium, Elite, Halo. all Cores don't have HDMI and the new "more reliable" chip-sets, all Premiums don't have HDMI and the "more reliable" chip-sets. all Elites don't have the new "more reliable" chip-sets. this is probably the most important issue of all. when buying a 360 now days, you don't know what you're buying. is it the new Premium or the old one? is the new Core or the old one? there were even reports that the Halo editions had hardware issues.

5) if MS had put HD-DVD in all 360's they probably would have had a better shot at beating Blu-ray. not putting it in left the door wide open for sony to exploit that difference. think about it, 12mil 360's in homes would mean 12mil HD-DVD players in homes. thats the same kind of boost that helped sony make Blu-ray the winner.

now they're still adding more skus and the more they add, the more it looks to me like they want it to be able to do everything the PS3 can do, imo. which would make sense, since they are in competition.

Okay, lets break the PS3 down a bit.

Adding "Home" to PSN was trying to copy XBL because PSN alone hasn't got a chance free or not.

20, 40, 60, 80 gig skus Seems to me that this is a wash, with the difference being in the current xbox skus, the main systems are pretty much identical as far as design. Same number of USB ports, the same compatibility, etc. While, the 60 gig is full BC, the 80 is software, and the 40 is non-existent. (PS2) The 40 gig model doesn't have as many USB ports (could be confusing).

Yeah, blu-ray won, cool you can watch a movie. Good for you, Although you say the movie in HD and I didn't you can tell me no more about the movie that I can tell you from watching it on DVD. But I can tell you something, you paid more for than I did.

Your wifi argument is terrible, are you using your PS3 to type here on N4G (somehow I don't believe so). Also, is the rest of your entertainment center wifi? I have a mediacenter, which is connected via wire to the rest of my network. That's because I actually put it in a location in my how to make if possible. Anyone that says they use wireless for gaming online and has never has any latency is just telling a huge fanboy lie!

In closing I'll say this, I can see things haven't change on n4g in all the time I've been gone. No, not true, what has changed is the number of PS3 fanboys on this site is ridiculously bad, and they are ruining what's left of it. You guys have no desire to hear any argument that opposes yours and there's enough of you to make each other feel better by click senseless disagrees on all who comments, unless they are say something that is good about the PS3 or bad about the wii and 360.

OohWii, sounds like you're a person who doesn't go to movies, either lol . While I agree that you don't get more movie because it's high-def, doesn't mean it's not in some way better. That's like saying I'd rather watch something on a fuzzy 17-inch TV instead of going to the theaters because the TV is free. Having a great picture and great sound makes a lot of difference in a lot of people's books.

But also, I think consoles having hi-def might prove it's worth in the upcoming years. Games are getting bigger (coding-wise, anwyay), and much harder to fit onto standard DVD's. While some games like RPG's make it a moot point, could you imagine having to pop in a new disc every time you cross the city in a GTA game? That could very well happen in the future if you tried to keep everything on DVD. We already see developers complaining about having to fit things on as it is. Granted, at this moment, Blu-ray in a console isn't that beneficial except for movies, but who knows what it could be in the near future?

Of course, I could be completely wrong, and wouldn't be surprised if I am.

As for the rest of what you said, yeah, I agree. Now if MS would have only fixed the fracking RRoD already so I wouldn't have to pray for my 360 so much. :)

i say we can. sorry, but too many SKUs just disrupts things. i dont know ANYONE with an elite. so how much money has MS pretty much chucked away by pushing it so much? money they could use to invest in new games. i know 1 person with a a core. and one person who bought an arcade. out of what, a good 30 people i know with 360s. and id say 50% of them have had RROD. about 20% have constant disk reading errors. some have outright jumped ship from 360 to ps3 because of the hassle. so i welcome them with open arms to the sony ship. only for them to find the differing SKUs a hassle to get through just to get a ps3.

The sad thing is MS would rather try and better the competition with obnoxious banter rather than trying to better their system, fact is the 360 shouldn't even be on shelves right now, the hardware is a frickin joke. MS has released the Falcon models, and is working on Opus, Jasper, and Valhalla. They are at least trying to fix the RROD problems, and they have even offered 3 year warranties. Besides RROD, I don't see any other problems the 360 has. It is a solid platform.

I'd that we prolly won't see it completely gone until the new mobo's with 65nm GPU's are released... which will be late this year.

Just make Premiums and Elites. Arcades and Halo units just aren't worth the trouble! 20GB hard drives are more expensive than 40GBs anyway (it's wierd, but true), but 60GB works. They'd have a slightly larger advantage in hard drive space, but then again they've had an advantage there for a LONG time.

Having more hard drive space than the 40GB PS3 still doesn't solve the fact that the 360 doesn't have a standard HDD, something that devs are constantly complaining about. Microsoft should have looked at the low sales figures (5% of all units sold) for the Core SKU and scrapped it 3 months after launch.

Premiums and Elites are the bread and butter of the 360 consoles. At this point, having a console without a harddrive doesn't make a lot of sense. The HDD needs to be standard for every console, whether its detatchable or not. If everyone is expected to have one, then game makers can use the hdd to their advantage. It could even make up for the lack of a blu-ray drive as far as games are concerened. For those that haven't gotten a HdD yet, they will just have to suck it up and buy one. And hopefully Microsoft can stop being so stubborn and make them at price competitive with others in the market.

I've got a launch and it pisses me off that I dont have hdmi (its died 2x but MS didn't send me any refurbs back with hdmi...tight bastards).
I'm also constantly deleting things on my 20GB HDD to make space for demos & video's. It sucks.
I also can't move my 360 between my livingroom and gaming room w/o moving my modem. That really sucks!
I just cant justify paying what MS wants for the 120GB HDD and the wi-fi add on. (rip-off!!)
Although, I still have plenty of space left on my PS3, its nice knowing that I can always upgrade my HDD w/o spending sh!t-tons of money doing so.

It shouldn't increase the price really. I don't think 60 gig hard drives cost all that much more then making a 20 gig drive right now. As technology improves, prices come down. Hell, even with the old xbox, microsoft started putting in 10 gig drives instead of the original 8 gig drives. I bet it is almost counter productive for them to be producing 20 gig drives right now. I'm sure the price difference between the two is almost negligible by now.

This is good news. Hopefully they drop the prices down on the upgrade drives as well. Over 200 CDN for a 120 gig hard drive, no thank you. I've even seen the supposedely "powered" drives, that microsoft likes to compare the 360's to (which is BS, since it powered by the box) go for like 80 bucks for a 320 gig model. Give me a break here.

spandexxking - 20 GB is plenty of space.. unlike the 360 the PS3 has to install the games, which, yes, you can delete, but why would you want to keep installing and deleting the install? Demos, I play, then delete. No problems. But, with a game if you delete the install you'd have to re-install it to play again.

But, at least for me, 20 GB is perfectly fine..

POG that surprisingly is a good point from you, yes this generation each console maker is offering us a lot of choice. However Microsofts "choices" seem to be offered just because their console was broken and did not offer stuff standard that the "more expensive" PS3 offered and really stuff that should have been standard to start with.(For example Wi-Fi, batteries for controller, larger HD, built in HD-DVD or Blu-Ray drive) I am just waiting for the Blu-Ray drive, wi-fi included, non RRODing, Xbox 360. However by then why wouldn't you just purchase a PS3?

I would not consider myself a Sony fanboy at all, in fact I even own a 360 (which I play every once in awhile) However I do find myself defending/pimping Sony on this site as the PS3 got a raw deal the first year, the system is proving to be the best choice I made and to be honest the Sony fanboys are funnier then the Xbox fanboys. In fact lately the Xbox fanboys have just come across as desperate and whinny.

I can admit when someone has made a good point though. I mean occasionaly a Xbot or Sony droid has to be correct.

MS should really approach toshiba about using the defunct hddvd format for games. It could still be useful even if movies are on blu. There are several consoles that had proprietary formtas. DC used GD_ROM, Cube used mini dvd, PCengine, nes, genesis all used different cart types.

MS could find a use for hddvd like sony found another use for their mini-disc. It was better suited for the mp3 age than it was the tape/cd age.

Sony ended up doing the same thing with Betamax. Although the VHS ended winning the home markets, Sony still made money on their format by juicing it up and issuing it out to professionals as Betacam in the mid 80's. It became the industry standard in television production for a decade, and is still used today in a lot of post-production.

I think it COULD possibly be a good thing for the next version of Xbox, but it putting it in now would be suicide for it. What developer would make a game that could only be played by a few hundred thousand out of the 17 million 360's around the world? Not to mention the huge consumer backlash from people who now possess decidedly inferior 360's.

But then again, even if MS did use the format, they would almost certainly have to include Blu-ray functionality, because many people (myself included) watch movies on their consoles. I think they'd probably sooner just license Blu-ray and pay Sony instead of continuing to have a perceived "gimped" product.

A complete redesign would be very costly. R@D isn't cheap, by any means. The last thing MS wants to do is pump a bunch of money into the 360 when they've just now started making money on it. Yeah, it would be good for consumers, but if MS continually lost money on consoles, then they'd eventually stop making one at all, and we'd be back to Sony vs Nintendo.

The only real choice they have is improving current cooling (which has happened), and wait for processor shrinks. It's the only way to fix the Red Rings without spending beau coup money. The CPU shrink occurred a few months ago, and now they're just waiting on the GPU shrink to occur later this year. After that, the 360 should be cool enough to run normally. I don't think that MS hates consumers as much as they've just hamstrung themselves with this.

As for the next round of consoles, who knows? MS is liable to try to jump out first to get the lead again, but they might also be more cautious because the Red Rings are a product of their hurrying.

I can see that by changing the name of the core to the arcade it was left open to allow for the inclusinf of a hdd as std. Now if this goes through then the devs will not be b!tch3n about not havin hdd for storage on all 360's. Sux for the ones that bought the core/arcade already yet if they havent gotten a hdd already then they should.

I can see it now. Arcade w/20gb sellin for $249. Premium w/60gb for $299 maybe $329 and the elite w/120gb for $399-429.

Now if ms will just lower the cost of the sep hdd. Maybe sell the 20's for $59 and the 120's for $99 with the 60 comin in at $79.

I always thought the whole RROD deal was overblown and not a big deal. But now my 360 is making a horrible, horrible noise every time I play it, and I think its only a matter of time before it breaks. So now I see that reliability really is a huge concern. I was going to get GTA4 for the 360 because of the extra content, but what if the 360 breaks while I'm playing GTA? Sure, MS will send me a dirty refurb, but how long will that take? Weeks? I don't want to wait a couple of weeks to play a game I just bought, and I don't want a filthy refurb from some stupid kid. This RROD is unacceptable garbage. Damn you MS.

Sony has done some copying of their own, so all is fair.

In terms of hardware, Sony has MS beat.. a much better machine for not a terrible lot more money. Now Microsoft is playing catch-up now that prices are down.

In terms of software, MS has Sony beat.. Live has been better. So now Sony has been upgrading PSN, and is adding Home later.

And as a footnote, Sony copied Nintendo, too. Nintendo introduces the Wii Remote, and then six months or so later, the PS3 mysteriously acquires tilt-sensing capability.

The only ones with any real originality have been Nintendo, as that was largely from necessity because they couldn't compete with what MS and Sony were bringing out.
