Top 5 Fire Graphics This Gen

A reader says " As with water , fire is also hard to replicate in games, with so many physical attributes and properties like fire inflaming other objects in the game world and fire spreading, fire is essential for many things like explosions or a game which utilizes the fire element, or they can just be lazy and add generic 2D pixalated sprite.."

1 - Another bad list of elements
Far Cry 2 should be first given all the dynamics that go into the fire. It's an open world game which means that the fire is not just some scripted event for a few minutes. Also I'd even say Killzone 2 should be higher than Alone in the dark.

It's funny how this site got hits off of their water article so now they do fire. I guess next we shall see snow and ice. Let me guess Lost Planet is number 1?

1.4 - Yeah not too good of a list
I tell you what though, I'm still shocked at the graphics behind Resident Evil 5 (Graphics in general). They looked amazing, IMO. I think given the right IP, Capcom could be in a position to turn a lot of heads with MT Framework 2.0

I hope Dark Void ends up being fun...

RE5 graphics looked great but were totally gimped. Clipping issues, you couldn't walk through bushes and those you could walk through did not react at all. The water effects again were last gen, sure they looked good but when you interacted with the water the splash/ripple effect was laughable.

RE5 game graphics were far too scripted. You could only open doors or smash windows that they wanted you to. Play the game 50 times it will be the same experience 50 times.

1.6 - Yeah that's true
But it was nice to look at haha. I tried interacting with a lot, with not too much success as you've mentioned. One cool thing that I did find was when you walk through certain areas that were dripping that black ooze substance, if you stood under it, it would drip onto you. Nothing major but kinda cool seeing as how I wasn't expecting it considering how still everything else is in the game.

Yes it's says this gen. But, check out MGS3 for the PS2. There's a boss in there called Fury ( sure many know of the battle with Snake ). Man, this is epic fire for a PS2 gen time frame.

starts at the 4:37 mark

2.1 - I hate to disagree
But i dont think killzone had the best fire. Hell even uncharted 2 seems to have a little better fire from the explosions.

I agree that Killzone 2 had the technically most advanced fire effects for consoles, i.e dynamic lighting on ALL objects including individuals that are on fire and the surroundings, this included proper "movement" of the fire depending on wind or if a person was moving while on fire, you know, running around and so on.

Far Cry 2 wins it for me, it was semi-dynamic, very realistic looking most of the time and fun to use/see.

2.4 - really?
I just finished killzone 2 today and actually stopped and looked at the fire and thought "this is some poor looking fire." I was looking at something that was on fire in the level(a burning drop ship I think) and not a burning person so maybe thats why it looked bad. I actually thought the fire in KZ 2 stood out as pretty bad compared to everything else around it.

edit-- yes kale Ive seen the flamethrower in gears but im not sure why you bring it up. I never said it was better and gears 2 isnt on this list. I think that KZ 2 looked great but the fact everything looked great made the poor looking fire stand out. I looked at a burning thing and really thought it wasnt up to par with the rest of the game. Not just the flamethrower counts a fire effects, but also when there is something burning like a crashed dropship, I noticed the fire to be pretty bad.

@Poopface the 2nd -

Oh yeah, "placed" fire effects are pretty static and poor to see and I admit that the flamethrower effects aren't that "spectacular" to see like from a movie or something (Aliens) but just from a TECHNICAL aspect it is pretty advanced stuff. Personally, I would have preferred a slightly dumbed down flamethrower in favor of a more spectacular version.

Maybe they'll achieve both in the sequel.

@kale

Are you talking about the flamethrower in gears 2? Because I thought they did a pretty good job with that. It was a good mix of realism with enough solidity to the fire so you could really tell where you were shooting it.

While I liked the flamethrower in KZ2 I found I kept burning myself because it was less obvious where the flames were. But also, you can't pepper the environment with flames in gears like you can in KZ2. I liked both the flamethrowers for their different reasons. They both had very different feels.

I played Alone in the Dark on PS3 and loved it. Very under-rated game, not quite sure why it got hated on so much. I thought it was tense and had pretty good graphics, and yeah, the fire in the game was really awesome.

Bioshock did well in both fire and water lists. And it has better art direction than just about anything else out this gen, too, IMO.

7 - This is how the list should be.......
taking first place for water and fire this gaming generation should be bioshock. In terms of visual design Gears 2. UFC undisputed for blood effects, Halo3 for grass effects, Forza for car designs.

I think crysis could take the win for most of the categories you listed. However, not best art direction since they were just going for real life. If I had to pick Id say best art direction goes to Cruis'n on the wii. Check it out if you don't believe me.

This is not fire but Ucharted's black smoke effect after the explosions are impressive.

It somehow reminds me of that black smoke in LOST lol.

@ YellowLightz

Flower wins the award for grass effects. Guess what? It's not possible on the 360 :P

Edit: Disagrees? Yes becuase we all know Flower is possible on the 360 sarc/

alone in the dark is a pretty sh!tty game but the fire effects were amazing the way it would lick the walls and cause the enviroment to fall apart wow, its funny because the game boasted the term "real world rules" but the only thing real world was the fire, everything else was just average game physics(some overexagerated like the driving) its amazing how the game developers spent more time on the fire physics than they did on actual gameplay mechanics and story telling, what we got was a c@ppy game but with the best fire effects in gaming ,kinda funny.

15.1 - Did you play the PS3 version?
If so, you would find that it greatly improves upon many things that littered the PC and 360 versions of the game. The story is your usual B-movie script with forced swearing and bad guy wins ending, but overall game isn't bad. The score for the game suits it. It has many neat features and more ways to go about accomplishing things.

Try PS3 version, you can find this game for as low as $20 now, and you can't go wrong with that.

halo 3 best grass effects? have you ever heard of a game called flower? funny because thats a downloadble psn game lol @ halo 3 ,and gears of war best visual design please there are wii games with a more appealing art style than gears of war 2 and sorry i dont mean to be a sony fanboy but killzone 2 does take the spot for best blood effects if you try to look at the close details you can see the blood dry up on the floor and slowly becomes transparent even on foot prints pretty cool efect also FEAR has some pretty nice blood effects

basically fire was the whole focus point of destroying your enemies with, so of course it's going to be better.

i thought ppl actually put killzone 2 down for having bad fire effects lol anyway the list is about right tbh although looking at the vids again i think i'd rate far cry 2's fire as number 1. just the way the wind took it and the graphics in that game are incredible.

it looks good in alone in the dark but fc2 looks better over all imo + when he's actually lighting the fire with the lighter it doesn't look all that great in alone in the dark

I thought the fire in Dead Space was pretty nice looking.

Worst fire I've seen in a while is Left 4 Dead. Holy sh*t that game has some of the ugliest fire I've seen in a long time. It looks like it should be on Genesis or SNES.
