Fallout 4 Is A Bit Of A Let Down If You Like Playing The Bad Guy

Mark Butler: "Every time Commander Shepar – sorry, ‘Vault 111 person’ opens their mouth, I’m reminded that Bethesda have essentially chosen my character for me, no matter how many facial hair possibilities they gave me during the appearance creation screen, or how many ‘sarcastic’ conversation choices there are to select.

"The lack of a ‘blank slate’ approach is actively limiting when it comes to role-playing as a character here. And the complete lack of karma system, or much in the way of prevalent morality to explore, is bugging me more than any number of funny visual glitches could."

I guess it all comes down to how you role play. Gordon Freman is a great silent Protagonist, but then again Commander Shepherd is also great non-silent protagonist.

I think CDPR handled morality in The Witcher 3 in a very good way, in that you made a choice and you wouldnt know if the outcome would be good or bad. It helped that the protagonist was voiced extremely well, and was able to really establish the tone of the charater.

I think the main issue with Fallout 4 is that it's very much between two stools. The protagonist is in no way as defined, interesting or charasmatic as Shepard or Geralt - in fact, he/she are downright bland - and yet it breaks the immersion of feeling that YOU are exploring the wasteland and making decisions, every time the view changes and you're watching some dull dude or lady chatting to an NPC.

It's tough to create a compelling lead character in a RPG, but if you're going to go that route instead of offering a 'blank slate' for the player to inhabit, you need to nail it. For me, Fallout 4 falls short on that score. Still a great game overall though.

I think the reason behind that is due to the previous games. Previous Fallout games the protagonist was silent. So this is a big change for the series. And it's hard to accept that your playing as a character rather than yourself. Where games like Witcher and Mass Effect, had a voiced protagonist from the start. If either of those series made them silent in the next entry, people would be feeling the same way they are right now about Fallout.

I actually like that the protagonist is voiced this time around, what I don't like is due to the dialog system, your limited to 4 choices. I think they should have included more buttons to press to widen the selection. It's like Circle is always to end the convo quick, Triangle is for more information or something related to perception skill, A is usually the "Good guy" answer, and circle is usually the "bad guy" answer. If they included the use of like L1 & R1 for a more varied system, I think less people would be upset.

I'm pretty disappointed with Fallout 4 overall. It feels generic.

Only downside to Fallout 4 is that they've done what they did to Skyrim...made it was accessible. I mean I came out of Vault 101 and literally had to rely on melee weapons as I scavenged hard for ammo but in this it's just kind of given to you, even laser/plasma weapons early on.

But the biggest thing is the karma system. I agree it didn't feel right in the wasteland and would do better within Elder Scrolls but they could have had some reputation system.

Great game but it's become a little dumbed down

Uglyday3081d ago

Fallout 3 had a laser pistol in the super mart quest right off the bat and a butt load of guns and ammo in megaton.

MilkMan3081d ago

There so much wrong with Fallout 4 its better not to talk about it and just relax and see the ugly scenery instead.

Palitera3081d ago

That's the problem with setting expectations absurdly high.

I expected a Fallout 3 new campaign and this is kind of what I've got, so I'm very satisfied.

The game could have been a thousand times better, obviously, but still a great and immersive game if you pass the endless design and technical issues.

Next stop: Just Cause 3. :P

Tex1173081d ago

I agree with the sentiment. If you are going to voice the character (and essentially choose the story for him), make it compelling.

Bethesda tried the "half-in (voiced main) half-out (blank slate) approach and it didn't quite work IMO.

Still a great game, and I am enjoying it.

RDR2 in the top ten is impressive. Bethesda games will drop off the list in a month.

thesoftware73011m ago

Lol, you hate Bethesda so much now because they are owned by MS, not realizing that those games are all on PS, that most likely the reason they are back on the list, which by the way is excellent for 3 single players games that is really old...so your salt means nothing, we don't expect them to be on the list for months, shit we didn't expect to be on the list now given how old they are.

Bravo to a successful franchise and now T.V show.

I've been playing FO3 and NV and will no doubt start up 4 again when the current gen patch drops.

neutralgamer19928h ago

There was a rumor that Bethesda maybe doing FO3/NV remastered collection. I hope they do and bring some quality of life improvements. Both games are awesome but could be better if done right given the remastered treatment

ZeekQuattro1h ago

I don't mind the backwards compatible versions on the Microsoft store honestly. Both 3 and NV have quick load times and FPS boost. I originally played FO3 on the PS3 so it felt like a different game to me with those changes alone. My FO3: GOTY expierence on the PS3 was bad enough I didn't even bother with NV until I got a XBO.

I wouldn't say no to a remaster however. Feels like now would be the time to announce it what with a hit show boosting awareness for the IP. We'll see what happens.

Duke195h ago

Loving the show and it 100% has me itching to boot up a FO again. The only question is whether to replay 3, NV or 4

Michiel19893h ago

The show is really good, it's everything I expect from a video game adaptation. The main audience being the fans of the franchise, new viewers not being the target audience was not what I was expecting.

Not a bad thing. They've even shown excitement at what the update could bring to making things better for them. More work? Yeah. But, still a good thing overall.

-Foxtrot3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

I think this looks pretty great so they should take as much time as they need.

It’s kind of shame however we’ll probably never get to see an official Fallout London game or anything set in the UK now because of the mod.

Andrew3363d ago

Why not? It's only gonna be available on PC and is not backed by Bethesda at all

-Foxtrot2d ago

Because Bethesda might think "Meh, London has already been done with that Mod, they've taken the shine away from it and if we do it now they might think we're copying"

Something along those lines.

FPS_D3TH2d ago

While I’d love to see more world building lore in Fallout, I’d be surprised if Fallout ever ventured beyond a United States setting. Maybe a dlc to a main game though. Always wondered what other places would look like, if they too had the 50s culture with futuristic tech.

Richhard13d ago

No point on the update, you can get 60fps anyway with mods.

Fonsecap2d ago

The update will break much more then it will fix... At least on PC.

Fallout Anthology Edition Looks Pretty S.P.E.C.I.A.L.

The Fallout Anthology Edition is coming to PC very soon, and is packaged with some very S.P.E.C.I.A.L. bonuses.

-Foxtrot7d ago

It’s an awful downgrade to the last one they did

They included physical disc back then

ocelot076d ago

Forgot I ordered this until I got the dispatch email.
