Gears of War: Ultimate Edition Review | EGM

Nick Plessas - "Gears of War: Ultimate Edition does a fine job of remastering the original, but a new coat of paint and some minor upgrades can’t disguise the fact that the gameplay experience hasn’t aged particularly well."

Foehammer3160d ago (Edited 3160d ago )

"Is this a lot of bang for your buck? Absolutely, and those who pride themselves on being fans of the series should be excited. However, all this new content doesn’t alter the foundation of how the title plays, and in some cases it even exacerbates it. Gears of War set a standard for third-person shooters, but having that in mind, those who attempt to get into it now will quickly realize how far the industry has evolved past it."

I agree it's an incredible value, and The Coalition is to be congratulated on their work.

IMO the gameplay holds up well, especially considering it's 9 years old.

Happy to say the overwhelmingly vast number of reviewers agree as out of 53 reviews, 47 are 80 or higher.

Does that really matter, will that stop you from enjoying the game?

RedDeadLB3160d ago

The score won't stop me. What's currently stopping me from enjoying the game is Coalition keeping their mouth shut about the PC version. I mean come on, we know absolutely nothing about it.

Give us a release date!

DragonKing813160d ago

I know right I been waiting for that too

@dragon

For someone who hates Microsoft so much, you sure are eager to give them your money...

I still can't believe the Xbox one still don't have one AAA exclusive that has a 9 or higher review score. It's unbelievable, hopefully Halo 5 or Forza changes that because it's almost been 3 years now. I believe Halo 5 will do it. To be honest Gears of War should have gotten the same review score it got 9 years ago.

Id rather 20 games rated in-between 80-90
Over 20 games rated 50-70 with one game in the 90s every two or three years. This is why my xbox is the go to platform this gen, exclusives are just too good

DrumBeat3160d ago (Edited 3160d ago )

I literally just finished the game half an hour ago, and everything has aged well except for the atrocious AI.

I love this game, I really do, but the AI is quite possibly the worst I've seen in a game. Ever. Dom, what are you doing? Stop walking out in the middle of a gunfight like you're taking a stroll in the park.

I also literally stood and stared at a locust while he just stared back. I left the game, came back, and he still hadn't made any attempt to kill me. Lasted about two minutes til I decided to put him out of his misery.

DragonKing813160d ago (Edited 3160d ago )

Lol that's hilarious what you said about the A.I.

Sciurus_vulgaris3160d ago

The enemy AI is still above average though. I just started playing the game and your allies seem to just be targets for locust and nothing more. I'm playing the campaign on hardcore; the locust drones move around and use cover effectively . They also avoid grenades , push forward, hide and revive each other as needed . I find it kinda odd that squad-mates couldn't have been re-coded to be as smart as the drones. I have however seen cases of locust acting dumb though.

StrawberryDiesel4203160d ago

Overall, the enemy AI isn't bad. Dom, that's another story. It's so bad, he's basically brain dead. Can't even count the number of times the Beserker killed him causing me to fail and how many times he has gotten me killed. Not to mention reviving him, so useless. I don't remember it being that bad in the original either.

Use a credit card if you are kinda leary. Not a debit card.

Are keys legit or will Sony unleash ban hammer

ElementX1606d ago

I've heard they're bought with stolen credit card numbers. The person gets the transactions reversed because it was stolen, but the "seller" gets the game codes to sell on CDKeys and other grey market sites.

paulust20021606d ago

The issue with these sites is that 'some people' buy keys in sales with stolen credit cards, then you buy the game from them...Then the company get the chargeback so it actually costs the game company money. I'm not convinced this is a vast majority though as pretty sure if it was a fraud site it woud just be closed down. Only issue I've had with an invalid key was for splinter cell blacklist for 38p. Pretty sure that is penny fraud. i.e. most people won't bother disputing as it's not worth it.
