PS5 Comes: Sony set on a Real PlayStation 5 instead of Console Evolution

Sony set on a real PlayStation 5 instead of console evolution like the smartphone market, says Shawn Layden, the head of the North American Playstation division of Sony.

Good Sony we'll prefer it that way.

JaguarEvolved2496d ago

Why am I excited for a ps5? It's because I know it'll have a lot of exclusive games. I wanted Microsoft to do that for the xbox one. It's as if Microsoft is focused on doing a lot except for actually making games and exclusive ones

MegamanXXX2495d ago (Edited 2495d ago )

I'm more excited for the incoming exclusives instead of the PS5!

Ulf2495d ago

Why would they sell new hardware, potentially losing their grip, when they already own the market?

DanteVFenris6662495d ago

Exclusives do sell systems but being exclusive doesn't make it a great game or worthy. Your logic seemed to imply otherwise. Currently all 3 console maker exclsives are usually top notch.

Having a lot of exclusives isn't a good thing unless those games are good. Sony does make great games but your argument was that having a lot of exclusives are good.

_-EDMIX-_2495d ago

Pretty much.

Reasons to be excited for PS5, its after PS4....next

Bronxs152495d ago

That didn't take long. The second comment in the PS5 article is about Xbox one.

frostypants2494d ago

That's what's frustrating about the One X. Plenty of power to be a new gen, but it's easier for them just to tie its library to the current gen. Such wasted possibility.

darthv722496d ago

Its obvious there will be a ps5 just as its obvious there will be another xbox. Its the unknown of what happens 3-4 years after the fact. Too early to confirm or deny.

All we can really expect is a new system is coming. When and how much... tba.

SonyWarrior2495d ago

not obvious there will be another xbox i think theres a good chance they will go software/platform only after xbox x

ForeverTheGoat2495d ago

@SonyWarrior
They already said there will be another xbox though.

XanderZane2495d ago

@SonyWarrior
Microsoft already said they are working on then next (Scorpio 2) XBox game console. So yes, there will definitely be another XBox. Probably won't be released until 2020-2021 though.

_-EDMIX-_2495d ago

I don't know about that Darth.

Their might really be a good chance MS doesn't even make another XB.

For all you know ,they indeed might go software only.

mcstorm2495d ago

The difference between Microsoft and Sony by the sounds of it is Microsoft are going to evolve the Xbox one each gen so to speak so that means any game that plays on the Xbox one, s & X will work on scoripo 2 and also backwords to but maybe dropping the one and s when the scoripo comes out so that means all the services and devices on the one s & X will work on the scoripo to where when sony make the ps5 it may not play PS4 games and you will need to buy new controllers ect as well as apps will need to be made for the new console unlike the Xbox.

That's how I am reading into this we could be wrong though.

Omnislashver362495d ago (Edited 2495d ago )

Seems like you're implying there will be yearly iterative consoles... I doubt that. They make games with optimization in mind. They wouldn't want to optimize for 5 different consoles by each brand at once. After 5 years we'd have 10 consoles. Ridiculous.

It makes sense we'll have PS5, PS6, and by time we get to PS7 we'll be at diminishing returns in many games and the bigger question will be "do users even want to update to PS8 anymore?". If there's any problem, it'll be that. This yearly iterative console thing isn't going to happen in my opinion. They're better off making money by software sales and they know it.

So 3-4 years after the fact, doubt it. They'd be tarnishing their name and studio's optimization doing anything else.

Kleptic2495d ago

everyone...eventually...is chasing phones.

The PC hardware market figured out this simple aspect originally, but 'PC's', by nature, are modular. Nvidia, Intel, and AMD rule the hardware side of things...no console makers have ever made the brunt of their profits on the sold hardware, they make it on the proprietary OS, and the software licensing forced on developers to work with it.

Look at Android vs. Apple. Android roasts iOS on usage globally, but puts up hardware figures that dwarf all but one or two android phone manufacturers (out of hundreds). They do that through annual upgrades, though. Apple can't afford to maintain slipping OS market share by avoiding reasons for users to upgrade to new hardware. They support what is out, but annually release a new product that offers the most cutting edge software and hardware options (we could debate that for days, but that is beyond the scope of this)...

So that's the real question. Sony maintaining an old school approach to hardware; one with a 6-7+ year focus, only to be ditched after...could back fire against MS's more phone like thing with new hardware more often, the newest offering the 'most', but still supporting something you bought several years ago...Doesn't matter what message board analysts think, just saying this is what's being thrown around in board rooms. Sony's current lead is substantial, but Ms's move to a more dynamic, almost modular, offering of platforms with a similar service...is not something to write off completely just yet.

Sony is currently Apple circa 2010 in all this...they have the market share, they're actively trying to lock down and control content within their own ecosystem (i.e. slamming doors on cross play, etc.)...very different than how Sony was a decade ago. MS is more like Android, with xbox and PC all being part of the service they're trying to get through, and on the brink of opening up Xbox Live/Windows 10 to OEM's (is it really that bizarre to think of an Asus, Acer, etc. Xbox a few years from now?). They're willing to throw out hardware more often, with the focus more being about the service than the products seems like. The weirdest generation of all time continues to get weirder, and anyone acting like Sony sticking to an identical approach is a guaranteed win...isn't considering all the details, imo.

lol. It will be marketing stunt, unless Sony expects to release PS5 in 8-years and even then MS would be releasing incremental consoles, making PS5 look incremental too.

The days of new generation is over. Technological innovation now moves to slow to make that happen so all it will be is a marketing stunt, and maybe even break compatibility. I'm looking at you Sony.

Hell, what does a new console generation mean for Sony anymore?

UCForce2495d ago (Edited 2495d ago )

I can also say the same thing with other console manufacturers. You do know that your criticism with Sony are way too off. I think you need to balance your optimism and criticism. If you think I'm triggered, you're right but for a good reason. You tried to be logical. Sometimes you right, but mostly you wrong. Like seriously, everyone have their criticism but if they gone too far, it would be more than just criticism like vendetta. I'm not kidding. I know you want to get rid of Sony.

UCForce2495d ago

You know I have criticized Sony in the past about PS3 Price and others stupid mistakes they made, but I weren't go that too far about get rid of them. For me, I'm more about confront Sony. I want them to be better and they did. Even they aren't perfect, but at least they do listen to consumers and will do anything to please consumers.

subtenko2495d ago

yes, I dont want next gen consoles to release every year one after another. Who wants to pay $400 for console 1, another $400 for the next year, another $400....another $400, oh look net year the newer one comes out again, $400..... I have a PC, we have PlayStation for the games and experiences

Godmars2902495d ago

I prefer they go back one step further and focus on optimizing current hardware use rather than trying to develop for the next iteration.

traditional console gaming is the way to go i could care less about hybrid this and that just give me a powerful console and a controller and tons of awesome games it's how it started and the formula still works fine still till this day.

2496d ago
Rimeskeem2496d ago

I have no doubt it will feature at least 8 Tera flops (cerny stated that as a 4K requirement). I hope they invest in the CPU tho. It's been the bottleneck of the whole generation.

Aenea2495d ago

10Tflops and a beast of a CPU.

Didn't I already hear some rumour that they will not be using an APU this time around?

XanderZane2495d ago

I just hope it can play and improve all my PS4 games. If they nail that this time around it'll be great. Only concerns will probably be the price. Can they give us 8-10TF, 16GB GPU Ram and a Ryzen CPU for just $399 again?

uptownsoul2495d ago

@343_Guilty_Spark

10Tflops and a beast of a CPU (in 2019 or 2020) is no more expensive than 6Tflops (in 2017)

OpenGL2494d ago

It's very unlikely that Sony or MS will ever release another console that doesn't use an APU.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 2494d ago
donthate2495d ago (Edited 2495d ago )

8TFlops would be such a weak console when the time comes. That's not a new generation, it's barely an incremental upgrade.

In that respect though, Xbox One X does seem like a next generation above PS4 Pro. That 12GB GDDR5 with 50% extra bandwidth and 2 extra TFlops..

uptownsoul2495d ago

If you think about what Xbox One X can get for $500 in 2017, then the PS5 can probably get significantly more than 12GB of GDDR5 or possibly GDDR6 (which releases in early 2018) in 2019 or 2020...

And lets not forget that even in the X1X the CPU is what is preventing several games from being 60fps...And PS5 might be able to put Ryzen CPU in 2019 or 2020 as well

S_kicKer2495d ago

I love the way you totally contradict yourself with your post.

KickSpinFilter2495d ago

LOL that can't do Native 4K and for some games and have to settle for checkerboard rendering and 30fps? Hardly incremental just like Pro but a little more powerful

Liqu1d2494d ago

If the focus on supporting 4K and high fidelity VR with the PS5 then I would expect it to be pretty powerful. A good CPU is a must though, no Jaguar 'evolved'.

Is Sony's Adaptive Difficulty A Good Idea?

Sony has been reported to be considering adding adaptive difficulty to all of its games. This feature would likely allow gamers to play more difficult games that usually have a skilled player barrier and also make it so hardcore gamers can get a good experience out of typically easier games.

shinoff2183107d ago

I don't see an issue. I'm also sure it'd be an option that you could turn off to.

jambola107d ago

If optional yes
if not, awful idea

ApocalypseShadow107d ago (Edited 107d ago )

It should be optional but it would be more interesting to see gamers play more advanced AI. It's been a request since the beginning that NPCs and bots were more intelligent and tougher and not be stupid cannon fodder. This AI I'm guessing will adapt to the player. Which is cool. If the gamer sucks, the AI will suck. If the gamer is a bad ass, the AI will kick some ass and take names.

Based on GT7 Sophy, AI will definitely give gamers a run for their money.

jambola107d ago

sure
but I also don't ever want a case of playing a game I want to be hard, but then it get's easier because I die too much and removes that option
if it's 100% optional, I'm all for it
even ai adapting I'm not against
just any crap like, "you died too much so boss will suck to let you win easier" crap

Noskypeno107d ago

Yeah like everyone said, it should be optional. Sometimes I like to relax from the competitive mp and play a single player that's challenging but in a predictable way. I'll probably use it at times but sometimes I just want to have a soldier yell grenade 5 seconds before he throws it at you in perfect English.

ZeekQuattro107d ago

I don't have a problem with it. A number of games do this already depending on your playstyle.

porkChop106d ago

If you can turn it off? Sure. If it's forced, no it's a terrible idea. Imagine wanting a tougher experience but because you die a few times the game lowers the difficulty. That kind of defeats the purpose of the harder difficulty.

Sony: "Portion" of PlayStation First-Party Games Changes in Launch Date Impacted Profitability

According to Sony, changes to the launch dates of a "portion of first-party titles" impacted the company's profitability.

Et tu, Factions? 🤔

KyRo258d ago

We barely know anything coming from Sony. It's all very quiet. Whatever they are doing they are playing it very differently to how they usually do it. For the people who aren't massively into superheros, it's a bit dry at the moment on the exclusive front.

isarai258d ago

I don't know why people are disagreeing, we only know of Spider-Man and Wolverine. We don't have any official announcement of anything else. It's been quiet for an unusual amount of time for PlayStation.

CS7258d ago

But we have the Gran Turismo movie and a live service game from Horizon /s

shinoff2183258d ago (Edited 258d ago )

Exactly why I got an xbox , starfield is way more intriguing then Spiderman 2. I'm not really into the superhero stuff. To this day I say my favorite ones were the ultimate alliance games. Spiderman 1 was pretty cool but I doesn't excite me like a starfield or rpg. I'm more excited for store ocean 2 remake then Spiderman 2. My ps5 will have some really deserved cool off time once starfield releases.

jivah258d ago

Crazy thing is that they've been eerily quiet on the Sony front. Like to the point where the let loose a few announcements just to tide us over. But we still have no idea the mountain of stuff that's on the way and being worked on. And to think its been this way since a large majority of gamers complained a few years ago, that Sony showed too much in advanced. And since then, they've held on super tight. Its never been this way.

Ps5 lack of 1st party games is really showing 3 years into this gen and it's been pretty bad! All we have to look forward to is GOAS

PunksOnN4G258d ago

Lol funny xbox has had a last of 1st party for over 5-6 years now yal lcoming out saying its a problem for PS but did not once during those 6 years LOL xbox kids down bad but i get bros been last place for over a decade LOL

Amplitude258d ago (Edited 258d ago )

Sony's got some ballers in it's arsenal of games. I'd argue way better quality and quantity than Microsoft's got but neither are particularly amazing.

Im a bit underwhelmed by this entire gen on both fronts tbh. Lack of any sort of quality DLSS competitor on AMD's side of things really affected both of these consoles to an extreme and really kinda forced me to switch to PC this gen, which is where i've mostly just been playing older games anyway. I sold my Series X and just use the PS5 for the exclusives and multiplayer stuff with my friends. I kinda wish the entire concept of consoles would go away with how this gen is going. Subscription service wars, microtransactions, paid online which is still insane to me, flat out stupid game pricing with very little in the way of actual upgraded game concepts beyond graphics settings bump ups, practically completely unsupported borderline scam accessories like the PSVR2 and dumb nonsense like the PSVR1 requiring a separate camera than the PS5 Camera. Hell we only just recently even got basic amenities like 1440p and Dolby Atmos over on PS5, and Atmos is almost unusable on the Series consoles.

The software experience and the hardware's all hella disappointing tbh and Insomniac Games is really the only company i can think of pushing the hardware to an extreme at the moment, with their SSD craziness in Ratchet and Spiderman 2, 60FPS RT and 40FPS modes, 3D audio, crazy impressive animation and post processing effects and clear benefits to the actual games. Mad props to them man

fr0sty258d ago

Series S/X didn't have a single first party exclusive game for the first 2 years of their lives... yet certain folks were curiously quiet about that...

CS7258d ago

Why in high heavens is everything about Xbox vs PS5 in here?

It is an article about the PS5.

Xbox's first party output has been garbage for over a decade, no one cares.

Playstation's known upcoming offerings is probably the driest it has ever been in three generations and these kids only care about "hurrr durrrr but but Xbox has even less games!11!!!!"

I don't care about Xbox, I bought a Playstation to play next generation exclusives and that HAS been lacking this gen and the future really isn't looking too bright.

InUrFoxHole258d ago (Edited 258d ago )

Surprise! Here comes the but but the other system... Dude just accept it for what it is. You can't keep covering for these companies like they care about you. They'll screw you over every chance they get, just to grab your $$$. The sooner you stop protecting that piece of plastic the sooner you can see things as a consumer and demand better.

FinalFantasyFanatic257d ago (Edited 257d ago )

I've been pretty disappointed with PS this gen, I haven't even felt much of a need to invest in a PS5 yet.

I really miss those really great games, especially JRPGs, which is why I'm happy to help fund games on Kickstarter like Armed Fantasia, 100 Heroes, Penny Blood... I'm still on the fence about whether I'll help out with Ratatan yet, Sony just isn't helping fund these games or giving them the support to thrive on their console this gen.

fr0sty257d ago

You call yourself final fantasy fanatic and yet you see no reason to invest in ps5, despite two of the best games in the series being released this year for it?

Ashunderfire86258d ago

We got so many games coming out this year, why even complain? Many games are making their target release date. Sony got some VR games as well coming and a horror survival game this month for PS5

Ashunderfire86258d ago

Yes Fort Solis PS5 console exclusive, and Daymare 1994 all this month! Horror survival or Survival horror you know what I mean 😆 you can Google all this info like I did. PS5 also has Spiderman 2 we obviously know coming October and HellDivers 2! For the 2 people that disagree needs to do a Google search! This year is stacked with games already.

DOMination-258d ago

Chasing the live service genre is a huge gamble. If they get one hit that's on par with today's heavy hitters, then the investment will be worth it 100x. But history tells us that a huge % of these titles fail - even ones from established studios with AAA budgets.

Over the last two generations, Sony have excelled in making brilliant cinematic single player games. Those games helped them to be the number 1 publisher for both revenue and profits and by quite some distance. Hopefully the lack of releases recently isn't a sign of the business pivoting to a completely different model because frankly, that'll suck. The current model is both commercially and critically successfully so it doesn't need changing on a whim just to chase the GaaS big bucks! #prayforplaystation

Chevalier258d ago

Agreed I really hope they don't pivot too much into GaaS and have a balanced approach with lots of single player story driven games mixed in.

Tacoboto258d ago

Oh they're so in on GaaS that they led their last showcase with a GaaS title that even has a $ in the name.

Magatsuhi258d ago

They have to pivot. With MS buying up everything they can't be reliant on the revenue brought in by 3rd party games anymore and that's what they use to fund alot of these 1st party games. So now they need a successful gaas game to bring in that extra cash flow to fund more 1st party games.

Chevalier258d ago

"Oh they're so in on GaaS that they led their last showcase with a GaaS title that even has a $ in the name."

And yet Playstation releases SP games regularly and Goty ones too. What's the last Goty Xbox game?! Oh right nothing AAA Goty in how many years?! Lol.

Don't get me wrong Xbox has some SP games on the way, but, so far not consistently and no Goty contenders that come close to Playstation.

Amplitude255d ago (Edited 255d ago )

I'd argue that Hi-Fi Rush is a solid candidate for GOTY. That was a good-ass game.
That's about it though lol

talocaca258d ago

Hopefully that means a packed 2024.

I'm mostly surprised that we still don't even know what their major studios are up to. Sucker Punch, Naughty Dog (single player), Bluepoint, Team Asobi, Media Molecule....

Amplitude255d ago (Edited 255d ago )

I kinda get it. These games take forever to develop and Sony's been announcing games much closer to their release dates these days which I think is smart.

Asobi and Media Molecule though, yeah - been a real long while. I still really do think Dreams is salvageable if Sony put in an ounce of effort. Could even be a huge system-seller with a rebrand, ad campaign, pc release, and maybe even a free version of the "Play" mode with ads that could pay creators. The general public doesn't even know Dreams exists and i think anybody that does know it exists would entirely approve of pushing it in any new way

Petebloodyonion258d ago

No Sh+t Louise, Delaying a game to the next quarter means that we won't have the profit of that game this quarter like we budget last year!

I'm Glad we have a complete article on the main page explaining these important things.
