PlayStation 4 Pro is not a real 4K console

PlayStation 4 Pro made its big debut yesterday, and Sony is selling it as a 4K gaming box. But most of the games the company showed were not rendering a native 4K image. Instead, you were probably seeing something closer to 1440p or 1800p. That's quite a lot less detail than 2160p -- although, for the Sony's new supersystem, it doesn't matter.

It is not native 4k but the techniques used in the Pro make it look like 4K or upscale res.. It Sounds alright. As long as the image is not stretched or blurry, It'll be fine

This is getting beyond ridiculous now.

PlayStation 4 is capable of *REAL* NATIVE 4K. The Last of Us Remastered and Elder Scrolls online will run at a Native 4K resolution.

That said, almost all the new AAA titles will use a checkerboard reconstruction technique to achieve the closest thing to a Native 4K image. Games will be reconstructed to 4K from either 1440p or 1800p.

@Death & 4show

Checkerboard reconstruction is NOT upscaling.

Pandamobile2779d ago

It is upscaling though. If the game is running actually rendering at 1080p, and is being "reconstructed" to a 2160p image, that is the definition of upscaling.

They describe the approach in the DigitalFoundry article as taking a 2x2 pixel sample and extrapolating out a 4x4 pixel sample. I'm also assuming they're also using some special type of filter that is tweaked and calibrated in some way to increase the accuracy of the of the upscaling.

Point is, it's still upscaling with a different name.

TheCommentator2779d ago (Edited 2779d ago )

Same type of thing Sony got major flak for in advertising Killzone. Same type of thing Sony fans beat Quantum Break up for too. I really want to see a side by side of Tomb Raider in 4k upscaled via One S, native on the PC and pseudo 4K on the Pro in order to get a fair comparison of the three techniques.

BTW, those two native 4k example are both last gen titles, and from what I understand, nobody will want to buy a Pro to play last gen games, right? That's the type of thing I always hear when the topic of BC on XB1 comes up, soooo... this must also be true!

Gazondaily2779d ago

@Genuine

Well there you go. Read the comment above. Digital Foundry who I know you revere so much confirming that it really is a former of upscaling.

shiva12779d ago

Did the digital foundry guys say ps4p is doing native 4k without loosing anything. And did they also say that 1440/1800 upscaling is the best alternative for 4k without compromising on any specs? Are u from digital foundry spec analyst team cause last i saw was their reviews being the golden standard.

People say xbox did 180 but i see this as 360. 180 more than xbox and it tops.

darthv722779d ago

@genuine... checkerboard reconstruction is a fancy way of saying upscaling. Just like subterranean engineer is a fancy name for sewer worker.

Man you crack me up. Don't change a thing.

I couldn't care less how 4k is done.. trick my eyes all you want I just want it to look noticibly better than what we get now...

Ppl just get too hung up on how it's done with out bothering to look at the damn tv when playing..

AngelicIceDiamond2779d ago

"You keep getting obsessed over raw numbers and native shit." Well people made a HUGE deal outta 720, 900p and 1080p 2, 3 years ago withe memes flying around and about none stop for several months. Humility and sensibility starting to kick in. I personally don't care the PS4P to me looks ok but history can't be ignored.

http://n4g.com/news/1458188...

They certainly seemed to care about raw numbers, pixels and are overly obsessive about it, straight psycho about it.

Aloy-Boyfriend2779d ago (Edited 2779d ago )

There's no 4k console out there to compare to. Xbox One S is not native 4k either. Of course the 1080p 720p issues were more concerning considering Xbox One was more expensive than PS4.

And yet, in those there were a lot of defendants who say they didn't care. Now it seems they care for Pro not being native 4k when Xbox one S isn't and Scorpio is too far yet (and pray it does native 4k). The anxiety for not having the edge for so long is real now

Granted I don't get involved in this specs discussion because i Understand little about them. I was talking on behalf of myself and not the fanboys to deserve such comments like above, but I like PlayStation so I Have to eat it up I guess --_(*_*)_--

mikeslemonade2779d ago

Don't want real 4K tech yet. Current hardware even on PC is too weak for 4K unless you have multiple GPUs.

People on here are so rushed for 4K because you buy into the media. When in reality current technology struggles with 1080 60 on max settings.

OoglyBoogly2779d ago

Where do you people keep getting that single GPU 4K is some impossible task? Even on my single 290X I had no issues with 4K. Yeah I might not have been running max settings @ 60fps but my games still looked and played better then the console versions all at multiple times more resolution.

Now that we have the likes of the Fury X and the 1070/1080 4K is WELL within the spectrum of single GPU 4K gaming. Even the PS4 Pro already has native 4K games announced.

Remember, going from 1080p to 4K doesn't require 4x the GPU power.

mikeslemonade2779d ago

Cause I rather play 1080 on max settings then have to adjust sliders down to play 4K.

shiva12779d ago

When 900p is not fine on 1080p tv how can 1440/1800p would be fine on 4ktv?

Did the world just do a 360?

Xb1ps42778d ago

The world didn't do a 360.. The finicky gamers simply don't know what they want... Or maybe they do? Maybe they want that 4k but want to buy the whole package at the dollar store.. Or maybe when gamers play they see numbers and letter running down the screen like in matrix and can actually see the difference from 900p to 1080p on a tv that's probably 7 to 10 yrs old or even older!

Stevonidas2778d ago

"Did the world just do a 360?"

Nope, that's just PlayStation fanboys moving the goalposts once again.

GamingIVfun2778d ago (Edited 2778d ago )

I would be willing to bet that the Xbox Scorpio games overall will not look better than PS4 Pro games.

Xbox Scorpio will most definitely use most all it's extra power just to get the games to true 4k resolution, but the tricks that PS4 pro uses to get the same effect (vIrtually Identical to 4k) takes less processing, trust me most will not be able to tell the difference. the difference is very very minimal, if it's indistinguishable what does it matter. Xbox Scorpio will cost much more than the PS4 pro, PS4 pro is $50.00 more than previous PS4's and a $100.00 more than the new PS4 being released September 15. If Xbox Scorpio doesn't cost more Microsoft are going to take a considerable hit on hardware.

Some of the games on Xbox Scorpio will have higher FPS in Single Player but I doubt they will in multiplayer, not unless they want Xbox Scorpio owners to have an unfair advantage.

Some of the games on PS4 will be true 4k, I believe Killing Floor 2, The Last Of US, and some others.

Did anyone expect it to be at that price?

danny8182779d ago

yes. The specs werent as crazy as i thought they would be. Its more to give a better hdr experience and support PSVR to its fullest

Lon3wolf2779d ago

So you thought you were going to get 4k gaming for $350/£399?

danny8182779d ago

did i say i was expecting 4k for $400?!

FlyingFoxy2779d ago (Edited 2779d ago )

"Real 4k" is doable on a midrange PC, maybe 2x the cost of a PS4 Pro yes but it would do native 4K 30fps.. but (just my opinion) I'd rather go 1440p with a high refresh screen, because even if you can't always hit the top end frame rates to the hertz of the monitor, you aren't going to suffer any drawbacks, whereas if you tried 4K 60fps (at present of course) you are almost guaranteed to get some large frame rate drops.

NotEvenMyFinalForm2779d ago

it's possible if you skip on using detailed shadows and AA. I'm not sure why but high quality shadows always seem to take a huge toll on gpu's and hairworks too.

KickSpinFilter2779d ago (Edited 2779d ago )

Nor is the XB1 S, and that's fine as long as both systems look a lot better than the PS4 and XB1 do on a 4k HDR TV.
Cuz right now they look kinda crappy compared to my Plasma R.I.P. Looking at the PS conference in 4k HDR (youtube PS4 player) on my 4k HDR TV looked pretty awesome and was showing the punch I feel my TV has been missing over my Plasma. I'm sure there was compression on the Youtube 4K video I watched. But it did look much better than on my graphic work station at work, so perhaps that's a good sign. I'll just have to get into Best Buy and have them setup PS4 Pro on the same TV I purchased. I would not care at all about the PS4 Pro if I still had my Plasma, that looked so sweet.

medman2779d ago (Edited 2779d ago )

I still have a Kuro plasma, but it loses handily to an LG oled I bought this year. With HDR content, there really is no comparison in bright scenes with contrasted darks, and the blacks of the LG are comparable to the Pioneer. A Sony led I have still loses out big time to the Kuro though. The led's just don't do black levels well enough. Even the full array led displays are disappointing in that area.

Sony Looking To Sell A Lot Of PS4 Pro's Come Christmas Says Jim Ryan

According to Pachter, the PS4 Pro sales aren't doing very good. Maybe drop the price $50 and bundle in a game since Xbox One X is coming?

thatguyhayat2493d ago

Patcher baffles himself sometimes. Ps4 pro is doing really well

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen2493d ago

Agreed. If 1 in 4 PS4's being sold is a Pro anything Pachter says about PS4 Pro sales numbers should be completely ignored.

bigmalky2493d ago

You can buy a PS4 Pro, with Horizon and Wipeout for £350 in the UK at the minute. Basically, you're getting the console for £280... I'd say that's a bargain. Why do people keep asking for another £50/$50 off when plenty of places do bundle deals with great prices?

Ju2493d ago

I have the feeling there is a price cut coming for the holidays.

LamerTamer2493d ago

They will have a hard time with X1X out.

bigmalky2493d ago

No they won't. Most parents will probably go for the cheaper option for Christmas presents. Most gamers that were waiting for a price for XoX, unless they're die hard Microsoft fans or spec junkies, will see that Sony have a cheaper option with huge exclusives coming in the new year, along with third party titles that will probably look little different to their XoX counterparts.

It's amazing how biased opinions seem to speak for the entire gaming population, instead of looking at people as beings that can, and will, use logic.

Petebloodyonion2493d ago

Most parents will go for the basic version of Ps4 or Xbox1 instead of a pro or X1X.
Most parents will ask if it's play COD, FIFA or GTA since theses are the biggest sellers on both platforms.
Most parents don't have freaking clues about the exclusives coming on Xbox or PS4 just like you probably don't have a clue about exclusive deals coming on Apple music.

It's amazing how N4G hardcore gamers seem to speak for the entire gaming population, instead of looking at people as beings that can, and will, follow the herd of COD/ GTA/ FiFA.

bigmalky2493d ago (Edited 2493d ago )

@Petebloodyonion

If you read my post properly, you'll see that I said parents will go for the cheaper console. I never even mentioned whether that's the upgraded models or not.

As for the games, it was in regard to gamers wanting a console, not the parents. Totally different sentence and subject.

It's amazing how people would actually look less like idiots if they actually read an entire post, before jumping on someone's comments.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen2493d ago

If Sony drops the price of the Pro and it's $150 cheaper than the $500, checkerboarding beast, the only thing Sony will have a hard time doing is shipping Pro's to retailers.

bigmalky2493d ago

They don't need to drop the price. You can buy a Pro with one or two games in a package for £100 cheaper than an XoX with nothing on it's release.

LIGATURE2493d ago

I love ps4 but if the x gives all the multiplat games at least 1080/60 and update past multiplat games then id go for the x.but id get a switch before ither😂
