How Rise of the Tomb Raider's Xbox One Exclusivity Hurts Gamers

"The game's exclusivity makes sense for Microsoft but harms gamers."

this is why its good to own all 3 consoles Nintendo have bayonetta 2, X1 has Rise of the TR and PS4 has no man's sky.

darthv723538d ago

the only ones this deal hurts are those who dont have an xb1. I say pick your xb1 bundle and game on. Problem solved.

Strangelover3538d ago

It's not that easy, people who have already purchased PS4 may not have money to buy another console, not everyone is rich

HaydenJameSmith3538d ago

I agree...

And its a bit hypocritical for people to complain at MS when Sony did the same thing after the success of Tomb Raider 1996 with Tomb Raider 2 1997 against N64 and Sega Saturn... that was considered a brilliant move. Sony have Uncharted now, so Crystal Dynamics must have thought this would be the best move for the franchise to be successful again cause Sony are never gonna give it the same treatment they did back in the PS1/PS2 Era's when they got Uncharted.

kingjames183538d ago

Damn these articles are now just becoming click bait. Everyone is jumping on this stupid bandwagon. All because of a "Timed Exclusive". If you like Tomb Raider so much then buy a Xbox. I own a Wii U and a Xbox One. I bought a Wii U because of its exclusives. I'll be buying a PS4 for its exclusives like UC4 and 1886. I didn't even see this much outcry for Sunshine on Xbox which is making me think everyone just has gone crazy...

Inzo3538d ago

Thats a very naive thing to say, but dont be surprised if this turns out to be a timed exclusive

Gozer3538d ago

Yeah, its clearly not xbox fans that are in an uproar. The front page is a total meltdown of Xbox hate. Kinda like when you take something away from a 5 year old.

bradfh3538d ago

real shame to make any game exclusive after supporting both systems. only people that hurt are the gamers, stupid cash grab. games should come out for all systems

choujij3538d ago

It hurts gamers as a whole because rather than putting that money towards a new ip, money was spent just to keep a game (which xbox owners were going to get anyway), away from the other gamers.

Silly gameAr3538d ago

Why should people go out and spend money on a console they have no interest in? Some people don't have the money to buy more then one console.

ger23963538d ago

Why? No way is tomb raider a reason to buy an Xbox 1.

thekhurg3538d ago

No the only ones that this deal hurts are SE/CD since I won't be dealing with them anymore.

darthv723538d ago

buying the other platforms is the most logical move. It always has been. And there does come a time when the cost of ownership is low enough to bite that bullet.

You should never deny yourself the company of gaming simply because of loyalty or animosity you hold towards a developer or platform holder. That is just...petty.

Hellsvacancy3538d ago (Edited 3537d ago )

It doesn't hurt me, I didn't even play the last Tomb Raider, think I care about the new one

Genesis53538d ago

Well I am not buying a console for one game. And I have played every TR game ever made. Sorry but no sale here.

Pogmathoin3537d ago

Hmmmmm, foot, meet the other shoe.....

ShaunCameron3537d ago

@ Strangelover

That's not Microsoft's or the industry's problem.

BattleAxe3537d ago

Who the hell wants to own 3 consoles??? And who the hell has time to game on 3 consoles? Get real...

+ Show (13) more repliesLast reply 3537d ago
Christopher3538d ago

Yup. The answer to the problem with turning a multiplatform game into an exclusive one is to just buy everything. The problem isn't at all that SE decided to take a game that has a history of being available on all major platforms, including PC, decided to make it exclusive to just one company's console platforms.

Then, when Activision, Ubisoft, Take 2, Sony, MS, and others come out with their own versions of EA Access, the only solution is to subscribe to them all.

When does this stop? When will people realize that decisions like this are bad for everyone. You gain nothing on the XBO/360 since you'd already get it. All they're doing is saying "Sorry, no cake for anyone else."

gangsta_red3538d ago

And that is how business works. What's the point of owning a particular console if they can all play the same thing?

What's the point of choosing a Xbox over a PS4 if both consoles play the exact same game with minor graphical differences?

It won't stop and it shouldn't stop. Each company is trying to make their console look like the better gaming device. Guess who wins, gamers! Guess who won the Tomb Raider, Xbox One, Sony won the No Man's Sky, to each their own.

And yes, the answer to the problem is just as simple as owning all systems, if you can afford it at the time. These games are going no where so even if you can't purchase a Xbox One today you can still purchase one three years from now and pick this game up for 10 dollars in the bargain bin at your local Gamestop. Another problem solved!

As for the subscription service and giving in to it...it has already begun and when it happens people might be mad but they won't stay mad for long. Take PS+ being mandatory for example, up and down PS3 fans swore they would never pay to play online but when it became mandatory for PS4, they accepted it, made excuses as to why it's such a great deal and now it's a distant memory. Even though there are two other platforms available that offer online free that they could play on and not support such "greedy" tactics.

People cry now but willingly go with the flow later...especially when it comes to their brand of choice.

Christopher3538d ago

***And that is how business works. What's the point of owning a particular console if they can all play the same thing? ***

What's the point of playing any third party game when they can go console exclusive at any point?

This isn't just about MS, it's about Square. This is about the fans.

You obviously don't care what the fans think, but the answer for fans isn't just to pay more money to play games. The answer to them is to stop supporting a company that obviously doesn't respect them.

Master-H3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

Agreed, Square is likely trying to have it's cake and eat it too by
- releasing exclusively for a set time period on Xbox.
- getting that money hat from MS
- then releasing to the rest of the platform who is being treated as second class fans because of this deal.

This way Square gets all the money from all platform as usual. but also a fat wad of cash from MS, this is a horrible business practice , what's to stop them from buying the next GTA? or AC ? or any other big 3rd party game in the future, just a disgrace from Square really.

btw that Gangsta dude is a xbox guy purely taking the piss, tried having a reasonable convo with him on the other thread...nope.

Christopher3538d ago

@Gantsta_red: Also, businesses work the way their customers let them work. If we keep letting them treat us as nothing more than paychecks, they'll keep doing it.

We need to make sure these businesses understand what is important to us. Let them know what we do and don't like. And we need to do that with our money sometimes.

Don't just accept it as how business works. Businesses work for us, not the other way around.

gangsta_red3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

"This isn't just about MS, it's about Square. This is about the fans."

No one complained when Square jumped ship from Nintendo to Sony. No one should complain now. Their are still fans of Tomb Raider on Xbox One and Square is providing those fans a new game. You want to play Tomb Raider buy an Xbox One, or wait for it to come to PS4.

"You obviously don't care what the fans think,..."

No, I don't care what a certain group of fans think. Especially when the game is still available to play if you have the system to play it on.

"Let them know what we do and don't like. And we need to do that with our money sometimes."

I'm assuming you don't pay for PS+ if you are a PS4 owner am I right? Or is that something you do support?

What exactly don't you like and what exactly won't you be supporting? It's pretty easy to say all that but not make it clear exactly what you are saying. I am an Xbox One owner and a fan of Tomb Raider and I will definitely be picking up the new Tomb Raider. I also like what EA Access has to offer and I will be subscribing to that too. So again, how do I not care for what the fans think when I am a fan? Because so far the Xbox business is working out just fine for me.

darthv723538d ago

"The answer to the problem with turning a multiplatform game into an exclusive one is to just buy everything."

Pretty much. you dont have to get it now but at some point it becomes much cheaper to buy up the other systems and then you can go back and scoop the games you missed out on.

it's how i roll and does not surprise me if other take the waiting game approach as well. i have never denied myself the gaming pleasure over something like brand loyalty. It may be until a few years after the fact but i do buy the other systems and games i dont already have and like to play.

It can be quite fun and entertaining playing things you missed out on from before. so in this case, if you are a fan of the TR series then at some point you will succumb to your inner desires and buy an xb1 for this game (if it does in fact stay "exclusive").

If you arent a fan then no worries. There is plenty more games to play.

Christopher3538d ago

***No one complained when Square jumped ship from Nintendo to Sony.***

I doubt that. But, there was also but a fraction of today's market for video games then. Not even close to what we have now for one IP (GTA) for a single console each year.

***No one should complain now. Their are still fans of Tomb Raider on Xbox One and Square is providing those fans a new game.***

And saying to all the other fans that if you like our game, you need to spend more money. Apparently, only certain fans of Tomb Raider matter to them. Wow, I feel special.

** You want to play Tomb Raider buy an Xbox One, or wait for it to come to PS4. ***

Currently, it's cited as a straight up exclusive. But, even then, why should I give SE money for making me wait? That would only send them the message that I'm okay with them treating me as a second-class fan.

***No, I don't care what a certain group of fans think.***

Oh. So Xbox owners are more important fans than others. Interesting.

*** Especially when the game is still available to play if you have the system to play it on. ***

Right. And if you don't, it only costs $400 to get it! What every fan wants to hear!

***I'm assuming you don't pay for PS+ if you are a PS4 owner am I right? Or is that something you do support? ***

This has nothing to do with this situation at all... You're going off topic.

***What exactly don't you like and what exactly won't you be supporting?***

SE's treatment of a large portion of its fanbase and telling them they have to buy new hardware to play a sequel that was available on the PC, PS3, and PS4 already.

*** I am an Xbox One owner and a fan of Tomb Raider and I will definitely be picking up the new Tomb Raider.***

So... you don't care that it affects others?

*** I also like what EA Access has to offer and I will be subscribing to that too. ***

Again, off topic. Has absolutely nothing to do with this topic.

***So again, how do I not care for what the fans think when I am a fan?***

Because you said it above: "No, I don't care what a certain group of fans think."

I'm going to assume that means fans of Tomb Raider on PC, PS3, and PS4.

*** Because so far the Xbox business is working out just fine for me.***

Well, as long as there's that...

user3672723538d ago

I wonder how those Japanese xbox fans felt when Sony snatched Destiny as an exclusive in Japan? Like they say..it is strictly logistic and business for all these companies.

WildArmed3538d ago

I think the difference between those three is Bayonetta 2 is the one that got "saved".

I don't think TR needed saving, they were (probably) going to make the game either way.

I'm sure it was the same for No Man's Sky, and it's still coming to PC.

Bayonetta 2 exclusivity was earned in my opinion, I don't know about the others. Without Nintendo's funding, we probably would not have seen the game.

But I may be wrong on this, I don't know if MS saved TR or Sony saved No man's Sky. But I doubt these games needed saving.

I should have prefaced this by saying I don't really follow No Man's Sky, so I don't really know where it stands financially.

Christopher3538d ago

If this was always going to be exclusive to MS consoles and was only possible that way, they would have announced the exclusivity at E3. Furthermore, why would they ever put out Tomb Raider on PS4 and XBO if they were working on an exclusive XBO game? Wouldn't they start the exclusivity with that game?

No, SE made enough to make definitive versions of Tomb Raider and they were already working on the sequel with the possibility of multiple platforms. And, sometime since E3 it was finalized to become an MS exclusive.

It makes no sense any other way.

TekoIie3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

No Man's Sky did have some development issues due to floods. If Sony are the ones who were willing to help them get development back on track I don't see an issue with the game being a timed exclusive as long their open and honest.

I have the same view on TR. But if this really is now a (permanent) bought and paid for 3rd party exclusive then this is horrible news.

I only hope this doesn't benefit MS or SE to disuade other 3rd parties from making desicions like this. Same for Sony btw because if they jump in on this too we'll be in an even worse situation :/

starchild3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

No, this won't even move that many Xbox Ones so it doesn't even really help Microsoft that much.

It doesn't help XB1 gamers because they were already going to get the game.

And it sure as hell doesn't help PC and PS4 gamers.

This is a horrible move by Microsoft and CD/Square Enix. I'm extremely disappointed in them.

This is an established franchise that has been enjoyed by PC and Playstation gamers for nearly two decades, and now they suddenly want to make the newest Tomb Raider, a game I was highly looking forward to, an XB1 exclusive? Just stupid.

Why not spend that money on some unique game that wouldn't have otherwise existed?

IcicleTrepan3538d ago

I bet if Sony did it you'd be swinging from the rafters in ecstasy.

MRMagoo1233538d ago

@icicle

Ahhhh so you think starchild is a sony fanboy because he thinks this kind of deal stinks ? he actually plays PC mostly from what I have seen from his posts, so auto jumping to the conclusion he is a sony fanboy makes you look more stupid than we all know you are.

HammockGames3537d ago

@ icicle

Starchild tends to pretty platform agnostic and usually seems geared towards pc if anything (not an elitist for that matter either). So bad assumption there.

He's also spot on. This doesn't really benefit anyone but will create some animosity.

Bathyj3537d ago

In no way is Starchild a Sony fanboy, Ive seen him call them out many times and I respect that.

And he summed it up beautifully. Weve been enjoying the series on Playstation and PC for nearly 2 decades, longer than Square have even owned it. Tombraider is more synonymous with the Playstation brand than any other console and one could even argue Tombraider owes alot of its initial success (and in turn longevity as a franchise) to Playstation.

Denying Playstation gamer this game because of MS's deep pockets is just a big FU to the fans they are supposedly supporting. They are not only cutting their potential customers to a third, but more people on PS would buy this than XB even if they were even because anyone who grew up playing Tombraider likely played it on a Sony platform, at least at some point.

And I'm so sick of this, its just business crap, as if that excuses anything. When a drug dealer gives you Columbia necktie its just business too. Doesnt make it right.

Just for the record, I'm not just blaming MS, its its in their nature to be greasy so you cant really blame them, theyre losing big time and are clearly getting desperate to pull such a selfish move. I blame Square just as much, a company that also owes a lot of its success the Playstation gamers. Theyre taking the short term payoff but it may sink their franchise long term, and frankly, I think they deserve it.

And I agree with Starchild, this game isnt going to sell Xboxes, MS is just doing this because they can. So where do you draw the line? Would you guys honestly like MS to just buy up everything so we no longer have a choice and are forced to buy their machine just to play former multiplat games. I weep for anyone who wants that. I want the console to have different offering, but they should be leading that charge themselves.

It doesn't hurt me as an XB1 gamer.

@Ziggurcat Nope, I will have already beat and enjoyed it.

ziggurcat3538d ago

it's going to hurt when they announce it for PS4, isn't it...

they worded it very carefully, and on all other exclusives, the disclaimer on the bottom says, "only on xbox one." it doesn't say that at all for TR.

choujij3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

Sure it can, you're just to immature to realize how. As a multi-plat title, you were going to get this game anyway. But now, the Xbox division has pissed away a lot of money that could have been put towards a new exclusive, which you very well could have loved (and probably would have, since you appear to love all things Xbox).

lelo3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

"How Rise of the Tomb Raider's Xbox One Exclusivity Hurts Gamers"

Double standards much?

It doesn't hurt gamers. It's made to sell consoles. It's a business, with every company trying to make their product more attractive then the competition. If you want to play Tomb Raider, you buy the Xbox One. If you choose to buy other consoles, then it's your problem.
If you want to play Nintendo exclusives you buy a WiiU.
If you want to play Sony exclusives you buy a PS4.
There are lot of 3rd party exclusives on the PS4 and WiiU... we don't see stupid articles like this claiming it hurts gamers.

How do these stupid articles get approved?

MRMagoo1233538d ago

tomb raider isnt a system seller so that kinda makes no sense, MS are just scrapping the bottom of the barrel now hoping something sticks and thats not gonna happen, pc owners and ps4 owners just wont bother getting the game, all they are doing is losing sales not gaining them and MS hurting there rep even more than before.

Sashamaz3538d ago

Bayonetta 2 is hardly worth buying another console. I'd be seriously worried about anyone who would buy a console for one game.

lonelyplayer3538d ago

I have a wii u and I never play it. I won't make the same mistake with the Xbox One.

Blaze9293537d ago

Of course we would it's not about console exclusivity it's about gamers not being able to play games, xbox fans would be just as pissed.

gamer11383538d ago

I agree totally that is what we should be talking about. All I am saying is the way things have been recently...would we REALLY be reacting this way if Sony had done this? Would it not be more honest to say it would be further fuel for the fire that the xbox one is finished and MS should give up? You can see the headline now: Xbox loses major third party game.

In reality I think it looks like this...Uncharted 4 comes out in holiday 2015. That is direct competition for Tomb Raider. Why not make it exclusive on Xbox One for 6 months then release on PS4 when people have had their fill of Uncharted?

You mean like how we had this discussion when Bayonetta went to Wii U? Or like how we did for Diablo III / Destiny exclusive content for PS4/PS3?

Christopher3538d ago

Yes, we would. Stop trying to turn this into something about fanboys when in reality it's about the industry and how the business treats its customers/fans.

Big_Game_Hunters3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

We already aren't. I know i'm not getting an xbox one so i'm disapointed but exclusives bave always been a thing.

starchild3538d ago

Well, I know that there are a lot of hypocrites on N4G that probably would change their tune, but I can say for a fact that I would have the same opinion whether it was Sony or Nintendo.

This is a bad business practice. One that I hope goes away and does not spread.

Big_Game_Hunters3538d ago

i know what you mea. in a perfect world i could play any game on my pc.

ger23963538d ago

Of course we would. I don't see why this is an issue. Its tomb raider. The game was ok. If it had been gta, cod, Or any other blockbuster, I could see the outrage. This the best Microsoft can do?

cfc783538d ago

If Sony and Microsoft want exclusives they should come from their own stables everything else should be fair game for the fans of both/all consoles but I know what your saying and I think we'd be having the same conversation with a slightly different headline.

468893373538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

Yes, we would be having this discussion. This isn't about fanboys arguing about console exclusivity. This is about publishers alienating their core audience by withholding games from the people who take up most of their sales. If Bioware for example, announced Mass Effect 4 as a PS4 exclusive, with no mention of other consoles, you'd hear just as much outrage from the Xbox and PC community.

lonelyplayer3538d ago

the fanbase is on playstation. It's like making COD a playstation exclusive when the fan base is on Xbox.

The Tomb Raider Survivor Trilogy's Take on Lara Croft Deserved More Recognition

The Survivor Trilogy was a drastic reimagining of Lara Croft and Tomb Raider, and it provokes changes for the character that are truly fantastic.

gamerant.com
isarai461d ago (Edited 461d ago )

Deserves less IMO, i think the 1st in the new trilogy was a perfect 1st step for the new direction. The next 2 games were half steps at best. Not only that, every character in the series including Lara is just annoying and doesn't make sense in terms of motive, like yes they have a motive, but none of it seems proportional to the lengths they are willing to go through for it. The most annoying thing is every one of the games say "become the Tomb Raider" yet 3 games later and we're still not there? No thanks. Then there's the mess of the 3rd game, massive skill tree that serves almost no purpose as there's literally only like 3-4 short encounters in the whole game, and they took till the 3rd game to finally manage some decent puzzles even remotely close to previous games in the series. Nah, the trilogy infuriated me to no end as a long time fan of the series, i hope we get better going forward cause that crap sucked.

Army_of_Darkness460d ago

The first in the trilogy was my favorite. I thought they were going into the right direction with that one until the second one came out and seemed like a graphical downgrade but the gameplay was okay. As for the Third, Graphics were really nice but it was kinda boring me to death with its non-stop platforming and exploring with not enough action! Well, for me anyway...

DeathTouch460d ago

Graphics on the 3rd one were abysmal. It’s more colorful and has more variety, but everything else was a noticeable downgrade.

The more open world with NPC quests was also handled very poorly, to the point I missed Angel of Darkness.

thesoftware730460d ago

I know it is your opinion, but she did progress as a character in each game, she even got more muscular and seasoned.

That is the thing, people first complained that there was not enough platforming and actual tomb raiding in the first and second games. Shadow remedied that and kept the combat elements.

3-4 encounters? huh? did we play the same game? there was plenty of combat and, the skill tree did matter, like being able to hang enemies from trees, set explosives traps on bodies, being able to counter, and that are just a few of the combat skills. The skill tree also had things like being able to hold your breath underwater longer, crafting upgrades, zipline upgrade, and climbing upgrades that all changed how you can approach situations.

Not knocking your opinion, but we definitely had different experiences. I had 98% completion on the shadow.

SoulWarrior460d ago (Edited 460d ago )

Sorry but i'm with him about the low number of encounters, the game throws loads of weapons and skills you're way with a comparatively low amount of places to actually use them, so they felt under utilised.

-Foxtrot461d ago

Yeah...no

It was awful, for THREE GAMES it was "become the Tomb Raider" where she went back to square one after each game. Not to mention after a huge reaction of killing someone for the first time she then becomes Rambo straight after and goes on a slaughter spree without a single other reaction. Her development was all over the place.

She was whiney, weak and in later game a little arrogant and selfish

Oh and the voice actress compared to the previous ones was not as good

Lara Croft deserved better and while they are decent games as they are, we deserved actual Tomb Raider games, we could have had better survival games if they just stuck with the original Lara Crofts origin about her plane going down. Surviving 2 weeks in the Himalayas...I'd have liked to seen that, who knows what mystical threat she could have faced in the mountains or underground some secret concealed cave.

Tacoboto460d ago

I thought Shadow of the Tomb Raider had better gameplay than Rise, but it annoyed me the most of the trilogy when I stopped to think about the story.

It's like they deliberately decided to make her unlikeable and did nothing to make the character you're playing as likeable or have even one sign of humility.

SoulWarrior461d ago

2013 I thought was a fine entry, but Rise and especially Shadow were painfully mediocre follow ups imo, I really didn't like how selfish and angry her character was in those two.

Terry_B460d ago

No. Please forget the crap completely.

northpaws460d ago

First one was decent, played through it twice.
Second one was okay, played through it once.
Third one was really bad, tried twice a year apart, still can't get through the first two hours, it is just really bad.

thesoftware730460d ago

Honest question, what did you find bad about it? the opening 2 hrs of Shadow were fantastic imo.

The opening was very similar to the first 2, what did you find really bad?

Not looking for an argument, just an honest question.

Starman69460d ago

3rd one just didn't feel like a tomb raider game. Possibly because the development was passed to another development team. Big mistake! Microsoft killed tomb raider making the first game a timed exclusive. Never recovered after that.
