PlayStation 4 Sales Top 16M Worldwide, Over 60M Games Sold at Retail

VGChartz Writes: "Sony's 8th generation home console, the PlayStation 4, has hit two more milestones during Black Friday week. The PlayStation 4 has now sold more than 16 million units worldwide and more than 60 million games.

The PlayStation 4 sold 1,193,346 for the week ending November 29, 2014. That brings lifetime sales to 16,146,005 units, according to VGChartz. There has also been more than 61.8 million games sold for the Xbox One at retail."

Over 15 mil in one year is simply astonishing. I'm not one to squabble over sales, but anyone not impressed by that figure is lying. I expect some insane dev support with an install base that large.

I am digging what Sony is doing lately. I won't lie I'm a fan of Sony and its nice to see them playing the PR game correctly, it can be very fickle. Hopefully we get some more games in 2015 from the 1st and 2nd party studios.

Hmm I don't know not many consoles get sold in December contrary to what you might think. November is the big month for console sales thanks to big releases and people getting those big purchases done and out the way rather than leaving them until last minutes. I mean look at release list for December. Bare.. There's a reason for that. People like to buy food and beer this month rather than games lol.

Why would they sell one of their most profitable businesses off? If anything they sell off the assets to non-profitable divisions, not get rid of the division that makes money.

Where do you people pull this stuff from. The only thing that made sense was "to spinoff" PlayStation. Which you really mean make PlayStation a subsidiary of Sony, which again is stupid, because it already is. This is why Kaz is trying to make 1 Sony. Currently Sony is multiple divisions working under one umbrella, Kaz wants shared technology and shared services across all division of Sony, and not just have Sony music, Sony Pictures, Sony Electronics + PlayStation

If anything Sony needs to downgrade it's electronics division (where most of the financial loss is coming from outside of PlayStation, which is a big plus for that division as well as it's imaging division), and refocus on new markets for licensing it's technology (as it does with cameras for mobile devices, and how that division has been saved), looking into untapped markets (medical field, and clean energy), and looking into services such as Vue and PSNow (but content and pricing will make or break these two).

Hardware is a high risk, low reward industry now. Software and services is a high risk high reward industry depending on the amount of effort, time, and money you put into it.

Sony is way passed bottom , they are on a big turnaround, the movie hack didnt help but did present a good buying opportunity(imo) the stock was way down 2 years ago but got up to 22.00 until the hack hit and dropped 2$ a share. I don't think so, but they should be neck and neck by the end of the year. Wii sold over 16m Year 1 (Jan 1 2007 - Dec 31 2007), and I think the PS4 will end up a bit lower in the 14m - 15m range (Jan 1 2014 - Dec 31 2014).

I also don't think if the PS4 will break the Wii U's record sells of 24m in a single year, which happened to be the following year, unless the causal gamer really jumps on board.

However, on the bright side, the PS4 is a $400 console, the Wii was a $250 console. So when the PS4 hits the $299 mark or less there's a good chance it's sales could skyrocket. Morpheus is also the final piece of that puzzle, if it takes off it could literally change the face of console gaming and be an innovation we haven't had in a long time (since XBL really), and that could really push sales.

Finally glad to see article writers actually doing a teeny bit more research these days and moving on from just straight console sales and instead looking at attach rates for games and other add-ons.

I find console sales alone are a bit boring. Unless there is a massive difference like PS4 launch week versus Wii-U launch week for example, then there is very little information to gain from knowing weekly "race results" for the hardware sales for anyone other than fanboys. But when you start to take the bigger business model into account such as game sales, subscription sales, how much each platform gives away with their subscriptions, etc.... it starts to tell a much more realistic picture of what is happening and makes for much more interesting reading for those with a couple more brain cells than the bog-standard fanboy!

Although Sony are winning on hardware sales Microsoft must be pretty pleased that game sales are actually marginally higher than Sony's with much less consoles in the wild. It goes without saying that if Microsoft can find that sweet spot where they rapidly increase hardware sales then the game sales will increase proportionally. If they close the gap between PS4 sales and X1 sales over the next 12 months, then going by these figures shown, game sales gap between X1 and PS4 will rapidly increase and that is where the real money is. It could mean this time next year X1 has 30M consoles to 50M PS4's, but X1 selling 180M games to PS4 120M.

Of course Sony are giving better value to the gamer on subscriptions (something like $1,300 a year in free content, to X1's $600) but there is the concern that Sony may be having to pay more to developers to give away that much free content and in a business sense that may mean far less profit going Sonys way unless it directly increases subscription numbers or hardware sales. What we need to see is how many X1 consoles are converting to subscriptions and compare that conversion figure to PS4's own conversion. If PS4 has more console owners subscribing to PSN or directly see's PSN giveaways as a major factor in hardware sales then PS4 are right to pay developers more to give more away. However if X1 subscribers per consoles sold are higher conversion rates then one has to question whether Microsoft are right to give away far less (and therefore pay developers less) and achieve the same results as their counterpart. Yes, the gamers will obviously be the winners with Sony's giveaways, but again, I am talking from a business viewpoint and Microsoft may be the bigger winners if it proves through conversion rates and hardware sale influence that they are doing equally as well giving away far less, than Sony are.

Maybe those sort of facts are kept too secret by Sony and Microsoft or will take a proper researcher to find out but its something that interests me as I am more a business nerd that looks at hardware sales as just part of a much bigger puzzle. But then again, researchers these days do less research and more click-bait to get a story out there.

You mean, the PS4 is still ahead by 7 million despite the media blowing up over the XB1 selling 400,000 more last month in the Americas and the UK only and predicting it will somehow catch up to the PS4? I did not see that one coming a mile away./s Actually, I was predicting this all along, especially once worldwide figures were taken into account, and given that Sony had at least a 5 million lead prior to last month, even though I predicted it was more than that, this doesn't surprise me at all. I will compliment MS for a well played strategy though. They did sell better than normally due to all the price cuts.
