Most Disappointing Game of 2014 — Destiny

"If there is one thing that defined 2014 in gaming, it would be the countless disappointments. First we had Watch Dogs fail to meet expectations, Assassin’s Creed Unity had way too many glitches, LittleBigPlanet 3 simply wasn’t as good as the previous titles, many next-gen games became last-gen games and vice versa, but none of these things can quite match the disappointment that is Destiny." - JPS

Naa... it's not Destiny. It's Watchdogs. At the very least Destiny has a ton of replay value, even if it has a hollow centre. Watchdogs on the other hand... meh.

frezhblunts3412d ago

I agree with the writer yet I do think they improved destiny a little bit I get bored trying to wait for the iron banner or something special to come my way. Still watchdogs was worse for me I actually got rid of the game.

radler3412d ago

I think it says a lot that there's such a huge list of disappointing games to choose from this year. I mean really, when you stop and think about it, the vast majority of games that have been released were absolutely terrible. It would be much easier to put together a small list of games that ranged from being okay to decent.

rdgneoz33412d ago

At least Watchdogs was playable at launch. Unity was the most disappointing because of how broken it was and yet Ubi still pushed that crap out on unsuspecting gamers.

xHeavYx3412d ago

Funny that many games released with broken MP (Driveclub, MCC) yet they go after the popular game

radler3412d ago

@xHeavYx

Yeah, games like DriveClub and Master Chief Collection were embarrassing and disgraceful, but they can't really go after games that are exclusive to certain consoles because fanboys go bananas with rage. It's pathetic, but that's N4G for you.

Blastoise3412d ago (Edited 3412d ago )

People seem to forget how much Titanfall was hyped. Launched with the same problems as Destiny really, rubbish story & missing a ton of content. I do agree with Destiny though, shameless DLC money-grab.

Lightning Mr Bubbles3412d ago

Destiny is the best game of 2014, that it's a remaster.

guitarded773412d ago

I have no idea what some people were expecting from Destiny. The only disappointment I have is there wasn't more Destiny. I don't recall anyone playing it going "Oh this is horrible, I can't play this". More like... I want more, but there isn't more.

MysticStrummer3412d ago

@radler - "when you stop and think about it, the vast majority of games that have been released were absolutely terrible."

You stopped, thought about it, and still came up with that ridiculous "fact"?

OT - Destiny is my Game of the Year easily.

@guitarded - "I have no idea what some people were expecting from Destiny."

I keep asking the same thing, along with "Why did you expect something different?". How did I know exactly what I was buying even though I never played the beta, and these people apparently expected a very different game? My feeling is that average shooter fans expected something much more typical.

I'd agree with Destiny personally, Watchdogs was disappointing in it's own way but I never expected it to be a genre changer... Destiny on the other hand was dubbed as the next big thing. Worse still, there are glimpses of the game everyone hyped it to be let down by some of the poorest storytelling I've seen in a game and other bad game mechanics. While I certainly got my money's worth and replay value from Destiny, I still consider it a huge disappointment because of what it could potentially have been.

hankmoody3412d ago

I would actually agree with you on this. I got Watch Dogs for free and I was literally thankful I didn't pay a cent for it. It's got some stuff in it that makes it fun but all in all, Watch Dogs is insanely boring and repetitive. Destiny is at least somewhat fun even when you're grinding.

UKmilitia3412d ago (Edited 3412d ago )

i think Destiny has failed in the fact so much content is held back.

What amazed me with Destiny is the fact they announced it was a 10year plan and that devs was dedicated to new content constantly yet we have had nothing but weekly heroics(unless thats what the dedicated team works on 24/7)
then the DLC that comes is a ripp off but people buy it so the evil circle carrys on spinning.

It amazes me that when u compare Destiny to Borderlands ,it makes destiny look so small in size and missions.

I think the biggest dissapointment isnt the right word for Destiny as such.

Its the biggest missed oppertunity to basically create the biggest vasted game on consoles, held back by lazyness and greed.

i bought it on release for £40 and sold it for £40 after i had put say 20 hours into it,the lvl 24 grind was crap solo.
i have since picked iut back up for £20 and playing with broinlaw and we having fun but having just reached lvl 25 its gettin ga bit if a chore again with having to repeat everything.
When i told him thats it,we done everything he was shocked at how little content there was.

Destiny in not a disappointment. With the exception of Madden it's by far my most played game of 2014. Over 150 hrs and counting. I may have played a total of 5 hrs of Watchdogs before I was bored out of my mind.

BiggerBoss3412d ago

I think Destiny can safely be considered a disappointment. While I dont consider it a bad game (had nearly 200 hours in it), but it was SUPPOSED to be an incredible game. It was supposed to make Halo look like childs play, but it just doesnt. Bungie dropped the ball on so many things (story, writing, etc) that the good parts like the actual gameplay just get overshadowed.

khellendros13412d ago

I don't understand how anyone who puts 200 hrs in a game can call it a disappointment. If you played for 200 hrs then Bungie did their job. I think gamers have unrealistic expectations. Sadly games have become like movies. People expect every game to groundbreaking or charge their perception. Could the story have been better, yes. Should there have been a lobby so that you can form raid parties? Yes. Those things in no way make it a disappointment.

JimmyHACK3412d ago

The game we all love to bitch about but can't stop playing 2014!

Audiggity3412d ago

That's not what the "Pre-Owned" sale trends seem to think. Haha, I sold Destiny faster than Watch Dogs!

Although, for the comments above, deciding which one was actually the bigger disappointment isn't easy...

Watch Dogs at least tried something new.

pompombrum3412d ago (Edited 3412d ago )

Pretty much what I was thinking about the pre-owned trend. You hear the defenders talk about "millions" still playing yet every pre-owned section of the game shops have loads of Destiny copies. Looking at the trade in values of destiny also shows that every man and his dog is trading the game in.

kurruptor3412d ago

What trend do you speak of? You seeing used copies in your local store? I hardly think that qualifies as a trend. Do you have anything else to back that up?

3 million people playing daily. You can't argue against that.

Ayunir3412d ago

I don't get why everyone hates Watch Dogs, I loved it, probably one of my fav games

Hoffmann3412d ago

Its a good game but when we saw the first trailers we expected so much more. Thats all.

dumahim3412d ago

What was it people were expecting besides better graphics? I don't get it. I got what I expected.

1nsomniac3412d ago

If we're talking the most disappointing because of how obvious it is that content was purposely removed to sell back to you later then yes it is Destiny. It could of been an essential game without any criticism if they hadn't short changed us to the extent they did. Even removing features that they had already explained were already in the game during developer diaries.

I agree though that it is an addictive game that people have put many, many hours into but that in some cases only increases the disappointment. Watch_Dogs at least had a fully fleshed out story & gameplay despite it being quite dull & such a massive downgrade despite Ubi again lying that there had been no downgrade what-so-ever. Which was completely unacceptable so deserves the hate backlash it gets.

Palitera3412d ago

100% agree.

As Diablo 3 was heavily designed around the RMAH (money money money) and it destroyed the vanilla game, Destiny's main concept is selling DLC.

Two more things wasted the opportunity of the game being excellent, since it has an almost perfect core gameplay (gunplay):

1. The worst loot system ever. It doesn't matter if you made 25-1 or 1-25 in the crucible. At all. Or if you carried your whole idle team during the raid or a nightfall strike.

2. The second worst mission design ever. Only escort missions can be below it. Every mission plays the same and are nothing more than excuses to make you move to the next room and "defend me while I hack another computer".

The raid, though... Those guys have my admiration. Superb moments, flawless balance, teamwork absolutely required. Too bad that most things apart from this and the gunplay screams meh.

Destiny Made Over $160 Million In Microtransaction Revenue In Less Than 2 Years

Destiny has made over $160 million in MTX revenue, and these numbers only account the data from late 2017 to early 2019.

Sgt_Slaughter326d ago

That's extremely low for microtransactions, especially for a game that's essentially designed around it

LucasRuinedChildhood326d ago (Edited 326d ago )

This was back when the game wasn't free to play.

The figures are from November 2017 to February 2019 (1 year and 4 months).

Based on that projection, the MTX revenue for Destiny 2 likely would have been closer to ~$240m for 2 years.

Not sure if premium expansions are included in that figure either although ... I'd hope that they are though and that most of the revenue was for actual content like Forsaken.

People spend way too much money on cosmetics.

Rude-ro326d ago (Edited 326d ago )

Seasons($10 and just got bumped to $12) and dungeon keys($10 each, two a year) are through the eververse(micro transaction) store.
So for those two years, in order to play a season, you would pay through micro transactions.

Sonic1881326d ago (Edited 326d ago )

Bungie Marathon will be worse since it's designed around it as well

Kurt Russell325d ago

It makes me sad to agree... but at the same time I am looking forward to giving it a go. Destiny 2 is so far in, I find it difficult to figure out what I am meant to do first.

buffig326d ago

I think FIFA alone makes over $1bn a year from mtx

anast326d ago

FIFA promotes a worldwide sport. It should make more money than destiny.

CantThinkOfAUsername326d ago (Edited 326d ago )

Let's compare something similar. Apex Legends and its ridiculous $18/$40 skins make EA a billion each year.

z2g326d ago

For as much as ppl complain how much they hate microtransactions, they sure don’t act like it. No wonder they aren’t going anywhere.

spicelicka326d ago

By "people" you're referring to millions and millions of people. Obviously the ones complaining aren't necessarily the same as the ones spending all that money.

There's millions that purchase MTX and there's nothing we can do about it

CobraKai477d ago

That’s the sad reality of a game like this. I bought it, invested lots of money, and it can go away at anytime. I still think this was more fun than 2.

jeromeface476d ago

prob because 2 is a grindfest slog

spoonard473d ago

That's the bummer of 'games as a service'.
