Sears To No Longer Sell Games and Putting All Games In Stock On Sale

Sears is pricing a lot of their games and accessories to move to try to get them out the door as they have decided not to carry games anymore.

That's unfortunate, I got a lot of PS1 games there as a kid. Good memories

Relientk773416d ago

Me too, back in the day Sears by me had a huge video game section, with game consoles setup. I used to play video games there while my parents did shopping lol

slapedurmomsace3416d ago (Edited 3416d ago )

@ Relientk77

I did the same thing. First time I ever played a Sega Saturn was in sears.

mikeslemonade3416d ago

My mom would go shopping while I stay in the demo kiosk section playing for a few hours. Banjo, Crash, Diddy Kong Racing etc.

Bytor3416d ago

I used to play the Atari 2600 and the Mattel Intelavision when I ran out of quarters at the arcade. Sears even had their own version of the 2600 back then.

Yui_Suzumiya3416d ago

Aw, me too back in the 90's. I remember playing Vectorman on Genesis and Donkey Kong on SNES. Also, Virtual Boy, LOL

Mankey3416d ago

Just go next door to Target, Wallmart, Costo or GameStop. Their loss, lol

Kidmyst3416d ago

Last system I think I bought from them was the SEGA CD system, so many games from them and memories. I think my SNES and Genesis came from Sears too.

DarthZoolu3416d ago

i work at sears prices still tge same

guitarded773416d ago

Yup... SEARS was the place I'd hang out in the mall and play video games because no one was there, and the other game store and toy store were packed with people waiting in line to play the consoles. Bought a lot of NES, Genesis and SNES games from them.

darthv723416d ago

Damn...I can remember buying 2600 games there as a kid.

BattleAxe3415d ago

Sears Canada hasn't sold any video games for a long time. I hate to see such an iconic store go by the wayside. It's like Eatons, Woolco and Beaver Lumber all over again.

Tainted Gene3415d ago

This.

Me and my brothers would literally run to the Sear's game section whenever our mom took us to the mall.

They had the same games on display for almost 6 years though: Tekken 2, Marion 64, 1080 N64, Orcania of Time, Crazy Taxi... but it was heaven all the same.

too bad they closed damn near all of em.

rainslacker3416d ago

The last day open for the one closest to me is Christmas Eve. Stuff is pretty cheap in store, although it looks pretty empty now, but there are no returns on the stuff you buy. I picked up a couple nice power tools for my wood shop.:) Most electronics were only about 10-20% off though, and still more expensive than Best Buy's normal prices. Appliances were pretty cheap though, and clothing was super cheap outside the shoe department. Might have to go there Xmas eve to see if I can get the manager to just give stuff for a dollar or two. People would be surprised they can sometimes bargain in retail outlets.

On Topic: Most of these games aren't priced to move. 3/4 of them are cheaper on Amazon.

Muzikguy3416d ago

I remember going to Sears and looking through the glass scrounging around for Final Fantasy Tactics. Then when it was here one day I was so happy that I bought that bad boy!! One of my favorite PS1 games :)

MSBAUSTX3416d ago

Its our own fault. Bought games there as a kid too but when is the last time you bought one there? I have never bought one from Sears as an adult. My dad always bought our games there because he was loyal to sears. It is our own fault when American companies get put out of business by Amazon and Ebay. Peoples jobs are at stake in this kind of thing.

CorndogBurglar3416d ago (Edited 3416d ago )

My buddy bought his PS4 there on launch day when no one had them in stock.. Just walked right in and picked it up. They had 4 just sitting there in the middle of the day.

I think people stopped thinking of Sears as a place for video games a long time ago.

rainslacker3416d ago (Edited 3416d ago )

Sears pricing isn't exactly low. They have good deals, and generally a knowledgeable staff, but if Amazon and Ebay didn't put them out of business then Lowes, Home Depot, Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart, and new competition all would have.

Sears never adapted to the changing marketplace. Going into Sears today is like going into Sears 20 years ago. That's great for the service, but not for buying things that you may want.

@Corndog

I think so too. Their gaming section at the two closest to me is rather pathetic, and the games never really get discounted. I know Sears for tools since I grew up with them, but nowadays you can get better and cheaper stuff from Lowes or Home Depot. I don't think I ever brought a game at Sears when I was young(20-25 years ago) even though they actually were a serious competitor of electronics back then.

donthate3416d ago

Both Ebay and Amazon are American businesses too though. I think online businesses are certainly putting pressure on retailers, but Sears real competition for now is Target and Walmart.

I prefer to go to Walmart or Target as opposed to Sears or JC Penny, but I get most my stuff online.

These retailers have a huge advantage of selling in-store and online, so if they made it more convenient to buy cheaper and faster at online, they would have huge business. Instead they are protecting their existing business, while Amazon is eating them alive.

pompous3416d ago

WRONG. It's Sears' fault. They don't have half the shit people come in asking for, not priced to be competitive, bought out Kmart then Kmart CEO runs Sears like Kmart n the whole thing goes under, etc.

360ICE3416d ago

Amazon and ebay are also American, right? I'm sure Sears put a lot of small shops out of business back in the day, just like Walmart or any other major business.

ThatOneGuyThere3416d ago

because amazon doesnt employ anyone..

Corpser3416d ago

My Sears had a small games section anyway , just one aisle next to the TVs, they're always full price so why would I ever buy there

MoveTheGlow3415d ago (Edited 3415d ago )

If you call it a "fault" really, then yeah, it is. I think Sears saw this coming for a long time - they're not making a good margin on games, and people aren't by default coming into their stores anymore. Their showpiece in the games retail industry was the amount of unique, playable demos on their big-screen CRT TVs, and live in-store demos just aren't what they used to be.

Another big problem is that lesser-known outlets for games are really suffering at the hands of online retailers. You're right that they didn't get with the times - it may have seemed too expensive via operations budgets for them to do so against Amazon until it was too late.

It wasn't just Amazon, though - as broadband expands, digital downloads via native console stores and Steam have really taken off, with a much higher margin to be made considering the low cost of distribution.

LOOK_AT_THIS_I3415d ago

I don't feel bad at all for Sears. They charge top of the line prices for old stuff. A greatest hits title goes for no more than 29 bucks, sears would charge 59 for it when you can get it cheaper everywhere. Don't get me started on their parts department pricing. They gouge everything there. Try buying bolts, washers for lawn equipment there and let that sticker shock jump out at you. They are pricing themselves out of business. Soon they will just be a tools/appliance chain if they even can bear that for much longer.

They had a good run in the 80's and 90's because of the boom in charge cards. Dad could get tools, mom clothes, and the kids toys instant due to the charge cards. Now with free shipping, price matching, lower prices their competitors are taking away their customers. They need to adapt to overcome, the loyalty isn't too much on the brand now it's on the dollar. Our grandparents generation is fading

got my N64 from Sears back in the day.

They used to have random good deals in the 90's & early 2000's.

MeliMel3416d ago

Thats where i bought my first PS. And I bought my Saturn at Lechemeres but those store no longer around.

MoveTheGlow3415d ago (Edited 3415d ago )

Yup. It's the end of a long-overdue era! I remember playing SNES and Sega Saturn games in Sears, and it's the only place I got to play Panzer Dragoon back then.

Also, I remember when they were really into the CD-i, hehe.

cell9893415d ago

it was the place to go to try out the latest PS one and 64 games. Me and my friends would go to sears after school to try out the games :/ somehow these news are sad

VealParmHero3415d ago (Edited 3415d ago )

Same here. I used to go there because my grandmother got employee discounts...I remember going there for Donkey Kong games, Banjo Kazooie, Mario...the list goes on. I used to love the kiosks. Also, remember how you used to get the ticket from the shelf and bring it to the cashier so he could bring you the game?....memories. Come to think of it...I prob haven't bought a game from Sears since the N64 era. Now we don't even have to leave the house anymore. I even miss midnight launches.

They've been doing this for years around the holidays the put them in the stores and then dump them towards the end of the season.

CorndogBurglar3416d ago

Not really. They might up their inventory around the holidays, but Sears sellsgames year round.

cl19833416d ago

Speaking as a person whom has worked in Sears distribution centers I can tell you that they don't get games all year round. Now they did offer games via online sale shipped out of their internet warehouse.

GhostTurtle3416d ago (Edited 3416d ago )

@cl
Every single Sears Ive ever been in in the last 20 years, no matter what time of year, has had a video game area.

Jonny5isalive3416d ago

I dont think my sears has a videogame section. They used to back in the day but now there is just clothes, tools and auto where the small games section was.

rainslacker3416d ago

Sears is shutting down a lot of stores, and changing existing ones, as well as restructuring what they sell. While they always dump stock at the end of the year(everyone does), there's a lot more to it than that right now. In this instance, they're actually discontinuing selling games altogether, so they will want to move it all out of inventory, probably by the end of their financial year.

GamingSinceThe80s3416d ago (Edited 3416d ago )

Same with Kmart,But it's the same company these days. The last Kmart in my area is closing Jan15th.Like others said they never changed with the times and going in there is almost scary, its like going back in time 20 to 30 years.I have not been to the Sears in the mall, let alone the mall by my house in a few years since they closed the Gamestop and the dollar movie theatre,so I don't know what is happening with it.

shwisha3416d ago

They haven't had much to choose from for a long time anyway.

tanukisuit3416d ago

US only or? I only ask, because Sears Canada is also doing very poorly...

How to recruit Lam in Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes

Lam is among the 120 characters available for recruitment in Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes. While she is one of the many straightforward recruits, a known bug may prevent players from recruiting her if certain conditions are met. Despite developers’ assurances of fixing the bug, some early access players still encounter issues with recruiting Lam despite attempting the standard method.

Tomb Raider Remastered just quietly censored one in-game detail

Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered players are ticked off by the game’s most recent patch, which censors in-game pin-up posters of Lara Croft.

This is why gaming is screwed. When people change things to fit someone’s agenda, it’s a slippery slope downhill.

Christopher11h ago(Edited 11h ago)

Even if that agenda is of the developer? Way to remove developer rights.

***One player called it a “huge problem with modern games,” saying they can now be “ruined AFTER people buy them”.***

The level of drama. Yes, I recall sitting there for more hours than I did anything else in the game. These two pinups are the core of the game, after all!

coolbeans10h ago(Edited 10h ago)

rlow1's cringe catastrophizing aside, I do think developers *ought* to strive to maintain an original work to the best of their ability. The language of a "remaster" tacitly implies that - for good or ill - what's being resold is what fans remember but better.

Profchaos10h ago

Games can be ruined after purchasing them yeah we know this not from this but from GTA IV which had half it's radio content patched out due to licensing expirations and to me that was a huge deal.

This pin up poster is a bit of nonsense but the whole argument of modern games can be ruined post launch is Absol true.

DedicatedDark9h ago(Edited 9h ago)

It's not their work to censor. They are incharge of restoration & remastering the work, not overwriting it.

Barlos8h ago

It's not the agenda of the developer though, they're pandering and trying to increase their ESG score.

Way to support censorship...

victorMaje8h ago

It’s not the end of the world for sure, but I understand the hate towards this kind of change. I believe it’s also a matter of principle.

Imagine a Picasso painting being restored & the restorer deciding there aren’t enough strokes, or some lines aren’t straight enough or curved enough…not sure it would/should sit well with people.

Have all original devs signed off on this change? Even if it’s the case, are we saying older gamers are better mentally equipped to process what was there than current gamers, hence the change?

Enough time ago the case was made that games are an art form. We’re supposed to have won that case.
So which is it? Are games art or not?

Aphrodia3m ago

And what of the rights of the buyer? The ones that purchased this game with hard earned money? They bought a product that is now being changed into a different product. Surely you would stand up for them since you are about "rights"?

Eidolon8h ago

Hasn't this been happened for over a decade since remasters? I can't see that it's any worse now. Maybe if Sweet Baby starts getting their hands on remasters we will definitely have a problem.

Rebel_Scum11h ago

tbh I dont see something like this as censorship. Does anyone else not find it strange for someone to stick pin ups of themsleves in a locker room?

Now of it was a pin up of some half naked firefighters it might make sense as Lara might like that, and if they removed that I would cry censorship. But removing pin ups of the main character, yeah I get it.

Barlos7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

It's a game, and they were placed there for the audience. It's not real life. If it was, she wouldn't have fought a T-Rex now would she?

Yes, it's censorship but it's a bit less in your face. If they were in the original game, then they should have been in the remasters. It's bad enough that they have that ridiculous unnecessary warning at the start, but then they start removing things post launch. I don't care how small the change, they shouldn't be doing it. It's nothing but ESG pandering but in a subtle way.

Rebel_Scum6h ago

Look bro, if you have pictures of yourself naked on a bear skin rug up in your house let me tell you, its not normal.

jambola5h ago

I wasn't aware censorship was based on what made sense to you

Rebel_Scum5h ago

Likewise, what a stupid comment.

By the year 2030, this remaster collection will totally be changed and censored. Probably will remove Lara as a playable character. It's ridiculous. Glad that my family didn't buy this.
I still have Tomb Raider 2 PS1 as a memory.

CobraKai7h ago

It’s mentioned in the article, and it’s a point i 100% agree with, it’s the fact that they can censor a game after you buy it. That’s total bullshit.

Killer2020UK6h ago

Whilst it's an overreaction to say this has "ruined" the game, it's still problematic that this has happened post launch and for many, post-purchase.

I don't want someone to change a product for the worse after I've bought it. The same goes for implementing micro transactions after reviews.

I wonder why they did this? Nobody was kicking up a fuss as far as I'm aware.
