the persuasion will not be of much worth if Yakuza 5 flops as horrible as I'm imagining it.

We should all bomb Shuhei Yoshida and Adam Boyes twitters for this.

Between MS and Sony...who has the most to gain from financially backing the development of Shenmue HD let alone part 3?

The original released on the Dreamcast and its sequel was available for the DC in JP/EU and on the Xbox in the US.

Many SEGA fans picked up the original xbox as a pseudo progression of the DC thanks to many great Sega releases like Panzer Dragoon Orta, Sega GT, Jet Set Radio, TJ & Earl 3... and Shenmue 2.

There has not been a Shenmue game released for Playstation. Yakuza has become quite a popular alternative to shenmue for the PS platform. The announcement of Yakuza 5 for release in the west could potentially lead to the eventual release of an HD remake of the original Shenmue (at the very least).

MS knows there are Shenmue fans that want a part 3, Sony knows there are Shenmue fans that want a part 3. And SEGA knows there are Shenmue fans that want a part 3. It's really anybodys guess as to which direction this goes but I for one would love to see a final chapter in the series.

Hopefully SEGA either sides with one or both but ultimately makes this happen.

edit: Now Sega could throw everyone off and totally go in a different direction. Like making a Shenmue HD compilation for the Wii-U and then following that up with Shenmue 3 as a Wii-U exclusive. I doubt that would happen but just thinking about how it would affect the internet...it would be bigger than Kim K's ass.

LOGICWINS3422d ago

@Darth- I see Nintendo having the most to gain from having Shenmue HD and Shenmue 3 as exclusives. I'd gladly buy a Wii U if this was the case. It'd also be hilarious to see N4G explode. Many here already assume it will be a PSN/PS4 exclusive.

Enemy3422d ago

I don't care who has the most to gain from it. I want it on the most powerful console, which happens to be my console of choice. I have no interest in purchasing a Wii U or Xbox just to play this. Nothing else on those platforms interests me.

DigitalRaptor3422d ago (Edited 3422d ago )

@ darth72

Anyone can talk about Microsoft's connection to Shenmue until they're blue in the face, but there's only one reason that Shenmue II (the worst version of the game) is on Xbox. Peter Moore brought some third party SEGA games along with him to get a foot in at Microsoft, to secure his future career, when SEGA were bombing out of the console business. That meant denying North American owners of the Dreamcast their own version of the sequel.

Sony may never have had a version of Shenmue on their consoles, but they have actively shown enthusiasm when fans have made requests and have responded in kind on many, many, many occasions more than any other company. Gio Corsi is the biggest proponent, having mentioned that Shenmue is pretty much at the top of the list of compiled requests. They want it to happen, but are realistic about the risks. It's a tricky one.

Phil Spencer has FLAT OUT said he's not going to #saveshenmue. I'm sure he knows the significance within the core gaming circles, but knows that they cannot fund a game like this the way it will need, AND have it make profit OR drive console sales for them. Cause it won't.

Nintendo may throw in a curveball and fund ahead the future of the series, and I'd LOVE to see Shenmue with the Gamepad functionality, I truly would. So much opportunity there.

darthv723422d ago (Edited 3422d ago )

@digital... I would agree with you on the xbox version not being as good as the DC only because of the voice acting. it was pretty much as bad as that of the original.

the game however is still worthy of a play through. The part i really hate (of both xb/dc) is that its pretty much a cliff hanger. The intention is to be a 3rd game and they developed part 2 on purpose.

Regardless as to why it came out the fact that it left us (the fans) wanting more and Sega not delivering on that for all these years is the thorn in my side. it's one of those love it or hate it type of games.

i for one love it but i hate seeing part 3 just sit there in limbo for all this time. the premise of that final chapter was already laid out. Its as if it was written at the same time but....things happened and there it sits.

It's like sega is holding this carrot out in front of the horse but the horse wont move and so the carrot just sits there dangling. Neither the horse is willing to move forward to reach for it nor is the owner willing to bend that stick a little closer to entice the horse to try and reach for it.

And by now that carrot has grown old and the horse is no longer interested. Well i dont know about the horse but I sure am.

Yep... Yakuza 5 looks great, but I'm not replugging my ps3 for this. If it was on PS4, it would be an instant buy.

Snookies123422d ago (Edited 3422d ago )

What's wrong with having the PS3 right there to play your older games? I'm still playing my PS3 (Kingdom Hearts 2.5). Even though I just got a PS4 the other day.

ShutUpDonny3421d ago

@Snookies12 There is nothing wrong with it. It a personal problem with the fact that my is now in the basement as a blue-ray player, right next to my 2yo daughter bedroom, so it's hard to have time to play it, unless I get some wireless headphones or I plug it again in the living room with no room left in the entertainment center, but I have to buy another BR player (same problem with the bedroom)... I have South Park the Stick of Truth for 4 months and only played 2 hours. It's a first world problem...

XanderZane3422d ago

I don't think Shenmue will ever be released on a Playstation system. Not even sure why Yakuza 5 is getting released in the West. Did we every get Yakuza 3 or 4 in the U.S.? These games have a niche market and rarely sell that great in the U.S. This is probably why SEGA has been hesitant to release them over here.

DVAcme3422d ago

You must be living under a rock, cause Yakuza 3 and 4 did come out here, and they sell well enough. They're not major blockbusters like... ugh... Sonic, but the Yakuza series has one of the most hardcore and dedicated fandoms there is. We're talking Dark Souls level of fan loyalty.

Amuro3422d ago (Edited 3422d ago )

I don't get from where you get this idea but Yakuza games don't sell. WW sales never make even for half of the total sales in Japan alone, proving that localization is nothing to the franchise but a waste of time and money. That's why Yakuza 5 wasn't going to be localized if it weren't for Sony.

If Yakuza 5 flops then forget about Shenmue and all their other niche franchises because in the future Sega will listen to no one, not even Sony. They have so little faith in it that the game will be digital online.

Dark Souls on the other hand sells a lot these days. Over 4 millions easily while Yakuza struggles to reach only 1m.

XanderZane3422d ago

Yakuza sells like crap in the U.S. dude. I never see the Yakuza games on retail shelves, so they must be release in limited quanities. I don't play them, because they aren't anything special. You can't compare them to Dark Souls because the Dark Souls franchise literally destroys Yakuza franchise by a mile. Dark Souls have millions in sales on both PS3 and XBox 360 in the U.S. Yakuza games don't even break 1 million in the U.S. So you're completely wrong about the fan loyality here. Maybe you are talking about Japan, where it has a large following.

tiffac0083422d ago (Edited 3422d ago )

There is a reason Yakuza 5 is digital only. So localization and licensing is the only cost this time around. There won't be a disaster like Yakuza Dead Souls because thats the entry that killed the franchise in the west. A spin off that nobody wanted.

Also, with the way the big 3 is co-developing games this gen (call it money hat if you will) anything is possible without the need for other games to succeed.

Heavenly King3422d ago

and that is why Sony is doing it; 250k-400k yakuza gamers mean 205k-400K consoles sold; and they are likely to buy accessories and other games too; and that will make Sony will earn millions because of that.

DVAcme3422d ago

@tiffac008, Heavenly King: Fistbump, guys. Tojo Clan 4 life :) Me, I've got all the ones released here in the US, and the Yakuza series is amongst my top 5 favorite game series ever. Few games give you so much gameplay for the money or as much gameplay variety. there's just so much stuff to do in them. Sidequests, items to find and build, minigames, new moves to learn... and since Yakuza 4, the multiple player characters give you so much more to do.

tiffac0083421d ago

@DVAcme

OMG! You guys are my Yakuza brothers! Tojo Clan for life baby~!!!

I play the hell out of Yakuza games. So i dont know.

Enemy3422d ago

One of the worst misinformed posts I've ever seen. Yakuza 3 and 4 came out here awhile ago.

Also, if Shenmue 3 ever does get made, it's safer to assume it'll happen on PlayStation 4 due to 1. Sony's willingness to take chances with an IP that probably won't sell more than 100k copies these days, and 2. Much higher sales on PS4 than Xbox One.

slappy5083422d ago

I've never played a Yakuza game but very eager to get my paws on this one

jc485733422d ago

Why are you comparing Yakuza with Dark Souls?

DVAcme3422d ago

Because of fan loyalty. Yakuza fans are as diehard about their franchise as Dark Souls fan.

ABeastNamedTariq3422d ago

'I don't see this game, so it must not exist'! 'I don't play this game, so it must suck!' 'Why isn't the big corporation listening to my valuable opinion?'

Revengeance3422d ago (Edited 3422d ago )

Yakuza 3 released in U.S. 2010
Yakuza 4 released in U.S. 2011

"Not even sure why Yakuza 5 is getting released in the West."

"These games have a niche market and rarely sell that great in the U.S."

The same could be said about the "Tales of" games yet Bandai Namco still keep bringing more to the states. It's called DEMAND.

It'd be nice if you did a little research.

Spotie3422d ago

1. Because there's a dedicated fanbase for Yakuza.
2. Yes, we "every" got Yakuza 3 and 4 in the US.
3. Because they're a niche market, their expected level of sales is different. Would have thought that was obvious.

IF Shenmue 3 is ever made, its most likely home is some Playstation console or another. Unless it's straight up moneyhatted by Microsoft, Sony is the most likely to help with development, and has the largest potential market, since PlayStation owners have shown themselves to support more niche titles.

XanderZane3422d ago (Edited 3422d ago )

@Spotie
Shenmue has NEVER been on a Playstation platform, so why would it be more home on the PS4? Because they've sold more game consoles so far? How would Playstation fans know how great this game even is? Did they all buy a Dreamcast or Xbox and played the first two games? you make absolutely no sense. Microsoft has support niche titles in the past as well. Games like Forza 5, Kinect Sports, Dead or Alive, Jet Set Radio, Viva Pinata, Dance Central, Dark Souls,, etc.. are all niche games that have sold a million or more units on an Xbox platform. Microsoft could easily nab this for XB1 and even include the PC. I'd be interested to see how many of you PS fanboys have played this on Dreamcast or Xbox previously.

Inception3422d ago

"Not even sure why Yakuza 5 is getting released in the West"

Did you hibernate for a decade or something?

Gio Corsi, the leader of Sony 3rd party production team, wanted PS fans to build the list of what 3rd party games they wanted the most. After more than a year, the result is Yakuza 5 is on top of the list of most wanted games. That's why the game can get localized because Sony help Sega to publish Yakuza 5.

"Did we every get Yakuza 3 or 4 in the U.S.?"

Did you live under a rock or something?

Yakuza 1, 2, 3, 4, and Dead Souls got an english released. Even Sony announced at PSX that Yakuza 4 and Dead Souls got a PSN version.

DigitalRaptor3420d ago (Edited 3420d ago )

Wow Xander. Look at your "holier than thou" attitude when it comes to Shenmue and Sony fans.

It's crazy that you think it's only possible that Xbox fans could have been Dreamcast owners, and not PlayStation owners having considered the console. My brother bought the PS2, and I owned a Dreamcast and it was glorious. I've bought both games twice for collector's purposes. Look at NeoGAF which has a great community of PlayStation fans (Or should I say GAMERS) who have a massive appreciation for the Shenmue series and drive threads wild in discussion for the game. Look on Shenmue Dojo. Loads of PlayStation fans on there too. Some of the biggest Shenmue fans are just gamers.

Personally, I don't need the stinking Xbox port to play those gems in the best way possible. The only reason it was on Xbox was because Peter Moore brought some third party SEGA games along with him to get a foot in at Microsoft, to secure his future career, when SEGA were bombing out of the console business.

And the game FLOPPED on Xbox. It absolutely FLOPPED. Was it a flop worth blocking out North American owners of the Dreamcast from playing the sequel to perhaps one of their favourite games of all time? Nope. Not at all.

Watch this video if you care about the games, the fan base and the future of the series: https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Be pragmatic and understand that Phil Spencer has literally FLAT OUT said he will not be supporting Shenmue, whilst high-profile Sony dudes have acknowledged the desire and responded in kind to fans on multiple occasions providing hope for a future of the series. That is what this whole article is about. Sony employees seem to know reasons why getting the HD remasters out the door has been troublesome, whilst MS doesn't even seem interested in having the conversation in regards to the franchise.

In addition, what is it you sometimes hear from people in response to Shenmue requests? "Why don't you just play Yakuza, it's like a modern Shenmue". Not that it's true, but SEGA is more connected to Sony through Yakuza, than Microsoft is connected to SEGA at all. At least these days.

XanderZane3416d ago

Game didin't FLOP on the Xbox. Phil never said he would not be supporting Shenmue II and he has already spoken to Yu Suzuki previously. AS usually SEGA wants BIG money for their time and effort and Microsoft obviously has that.

http://www.metacritic.com/g...

You sound like a childish biased troll who needs to makes exclusives to make yourself feel good about your platform of choice. Give it a rest kid. Stop lying to yourself and everyone on here about things you know nothing about. The game will get made eventually and there is no guarantees that it will be on a Playstation platform at this point. Sure Playstation got Yakuza, but XBox had Jet Set Radio, Phantasy Star, Sega Rally and at least another 1/2 dozen titles on their systems through the years. So it could easily end up on the XBox One as well. I own both, so I'll get to play it either way; unlike some people.

Shenmue – A True Work of Freedom Well Ahead of its Time

Yu Suzuki's Historic Video Game Project Changed the World On December 29th, 1999, twenty-two years ago, the opening chapter of Yu Suzuki’s Shenmue was released in its native Japan. Released by Sega Enterprises at the time, Shenmue was a game world built like no other.

Nerdmaster846d ago

The first two games were ahead of its time. Too bad that the third game stuck in time with things that didn't work anymore, and didn't include a lot of things that became expected from open world games since the first games were released. It even added some baffling and horrible mechanics like the stamina that doubles as HP, and goes down as you run around.
This without even mentioning that that third game, plot-wise, was basically a filler.

-Hermit-846d ago

I like Shenmue 3, but the stamina bar was a horrible move. I'm shocked that they thought fans would like it. I wasn't a fan of fishing (I hate fishing mini games) or collecting herbs either. I also hated how Ryo was so easily beaten by thugs after all of the training he went through. Ryo felt weaker in Shenmue 3 than he did in Shenmue 1. The saddest part was not including throw moves, that is just a weird thing to leave out of a game where throwing moves feature so heavily in the first two. I would still rate it 7/10 though, nothing special, but enjoyable enough and I'm happy it was made after so many years of waiting.

Shenmue 1 and 2 are special games though. Shenmue 1 is my favourite, it's not as big as Shenmue 2, but I like that. It's a game I never like completing because you get so comfortable and immersed with the world.

LOGICWINS846d ago

Loved Shenmue 1 and 2, but I never bothered with 3 as I was deeply invested in the Yakuza games (superior to Shenmue in every way IMO) by the time it came out.

slowgamer846d ago

I did like the first most, as it had the most detail and smaller scale and adventure was quite fun and new for me, second one was okay too but didn't like it as much and I haven't really had the strenght to consentrate on third one especially knowing that it basically doesn't finish the story and it feels more clumsy than I would like.

babadivad846d ago

I put in WAAAYY more hours on Shenmue part 1 than 2. I was blown away by the detail of the world. There was literally nothing like it. For an action game, Shenmue 2 was better. The plot moved along a lot faster due to it covering so many chapters.

Training wasn't as big a focus in the second game. It actually annoyed me at first that I couldn't find anywhere to train. I was still in the part 1 mindset, training wasn't as imperative as it was in part 1.

So many games have borrowed from Shenmue, it's a shame the buying gaming public didn't support such an incredible achievement of the day.

Shenmue as a series has had a tortured existence and it's pretty sad.

KingofBandits846d ago

Shenmue was a true watershed moment in gaming. There were just so many elements that even if they did not originate with the series, they were refined, tweaked and combined in a way that was never done before. For the era this was released in it was mind blowing at the freedom, density, and depth you were given in the game world. Couple that with a beautiful OST, cutting edge graphics and deep fighting system and it was really something special. very few games have ever captured my attention like it to this day. the third game has its faults and is not nearly as ambitious but a lot has changed since the first game was released. Shenmue 3 in truth simply existing was an undertaking, though I do hope that Yu Suzuki is given a chance at making Shenmue 4.

SinkingSage846d ago

It remains my favorite video game of all time to this day.

CrimsonWing69846d ago (Edited 846d ago )

The 1st and 2nd were truly special games especially if you played them when they were released. It just was fresh and unique. I tried to get into the 3rd one but I just couldn't. I will give it another try at some point because of the story, but I just wan't a fan of the setting. I think if it had taken place in a city like Hong Kong or something other than the country side I'd probably be more drawn to it.

I prefer Shenmue, but I am happy we have both. I don't like the constant comparisons between the two though. Anybody that likes and plays both of them enough can tell that they are very different games. There really aren't many similarities.

Petebloodyonion960d ago

I always felt that Yakuza was the spiriual successor to Shenmue or the natural evolution of Shenmue.
The settings of a Yakuza or a very Japanese-oriented story.
The open-world element with restaurants, convenience stores, and arcades.
Playing arcade games like Space-Harrier and Hang-on (is it me or Space Harrier is always there)
Collecting toy capsule

SimpleSlave960d ago

"...natural evolution of Shenmue." No. While it is very tempting to get to this conclusion, this is incorrect. In fact, while Yakuza have refined some aspects (fighting, controls, etc.) that where present in Shenmue, the reality is that Shenmue is still the more advance and ambitious game when it comes to its gameplay systems and presentation.

In Shenmue, NPC's had routines, there was a day/night cycle, stores would actually close, there was a weather system in place, etc. Shenmue was not trying to pretend to be a slice of life but actually let you play a slice of life.

I understand it might seem insignificant to most, but it makes a huge difference and thus is makes for a vastly different experience than Yakuza.
