Expanded Dark Souls 2 coming to smite Xbox One, PS4 owners

You might have thought that buying into the new generation of consoles would protect you from the gleeful, maniacal punishment of the Dark Souls series, but you were wrong. Namco has revealed that a new edition of Dark Souls 2, subtitled Scholar of the First Sin, is headed to Xbox 360, PS3, PC and now, for the first time, Xbox One and PS4.

CARROT1809943438d ago

will be too busy playing bloodbourne for this

Mankey3438d ago

LOL

I concur. But nice to for people who didn't grab it the first time around. It's an incredibly coherent and suburbly mood defining title.

guitarded773438d ago

I knew this was coming... I held out just long enough. Was gonna break and buy it for Black Friday, but now I can just wait it out a little longer. I did buy the hardback game guide this week though. Bloodborne and Dark Souls 2... goodness.

Swiggins3438d ago

Lucky you Guitarded, I'm envious :O

I skipped the DLC because I anticipated something like this, so I guess that's how I'll do it, haha.

Yi-Long3438d ago

Yeah, I also always felt this would eventually come to next-gen.

That wasn't the reason for me for skipping it on last-gen though, because I skipped it on last-gen because I still haven't really gone through the first Dark Souls (my PS3 HDD broke somewhere past the first 'bell').

Anyway, great news :)

breakpad3438d ago

i m glad i waited and didnt bought this for previous gen ..i will buy it now

raWfodog3438d ago

I was going to pick up this game to hold me over until Bloodbourne comes out. Now I'll wait and get it for the PS4.

ABizzel13438d ago

Horrible release date, the PS4 version is going to get ate up by Bloodbourne.

They should have done this much sooner like July / August of this year.

frostypants3437d ago

"suburbly" mood defining? Heh...

"It's just like shopping at Costco!"

ziggurcat3437d ago

@guitarded

You might as well pick it up on Black Friday since it's a free upgrade for those who already own dark souls 2... Unless you're getting the PS4/xbone version?

Tapani3437d ago

Ohhh I broke down twice: I bought the PS3 version at launch and PC version with the DLC Season pass and played it through once all the DLC was available. Now I have to buy a third version of the game for PS4...

Well, if I give this company my money, maybe the will keep making these good games. This is the ONLY real JRPG game series that is still interesting to me.

majiebeast3438d ago

This. If it was February it would have been smarter.

sobotz3438d ago

Yeah, with Evolve, Witcher, and Order I'm sure it wouldn't be too busy /s

Late April is more perfect anyway

DragonKnight3438d ago

No it wouldn't. Bloodbourne is out in February and this game will not stand a chance unless it was some kind of a bundle. Dark Souls 2 is the worst of the series by far, it literally would get destroyed by Bloodbourne if it came out in February.

Even as it stands, this is a waste of time.

majiebeast3438d ago

Except that Bloodborne was delayed till March.

DragonKnight3438d ago

Either way it's a waste of time. Dark Souls 2 is considered by most to be the worst of the series. PS4 owners are waiting for Bloodborne and there is literally no reason to get this re-release save for the fact that it's a free upgrade but there's no point. New NPCs, balancing, and item descriptions isn't the bare minimum of new content they could provide. IF they wanted this to sell, then they'd re-implement the lighting they took out, and maybe add in a way to either play Pure Black a la Demon's Souls, or Gravelord, or both.

As it stands, whether it's a month off from Bloodborne or within the same month, Bloodborne is what people will be playing, not this.

Exari3438d ago

still, releasing it before bloodborne may affect bloodborne's sales.. and releasing right after it can cause the same effect.

they should somehow release it in December lol

Kingdomcome2473438d ago

@sobotz- Don't forget Dying Light as well. :)

freshslicepizza3438d ago

"Dark Souls 2 is considered by most to be the worst of the series."

did you do your own study because as it sits right now on metacritic its a 91. i dont even bother with user scores given all the anonymity and trolls out there. you can make the same argument about the first dark souls because i have also read comments some people prefer the second dark souls over the first one. if this game is priced at $60 then it will be a waste of time.

"Bloodborne is what people will be playing, not this."

ps4 owners likely but this game is availabale on the pc, ps3, xbox 360 and xbox one. bloodborne is only coming to the ps4.

Why's everyone hating on DS2?

As someone that has 3 demon's plats and both dark plats, I loved DS2.

Loktai3438d ago

Elitists I guess.

Still unless they give it some major upgrades this isnt worth a rebuy based on their description - Unless you're hunting the plats right.

killacal133438d ago

I also want to know why people hate DS2, is the gameplay not as good as DS1? I havn't played Ds2, so any thoughts from a DS2 veteran would be appreciated.

madmonkey013438d ago

i can not explain why i didn't like it, but to me it was the worst in the series so far.

Forn3438d ago

It was sooo easy and simple compared to the other two and far less deep. Coupled with a world that pales by comparison and forgettable interactions, I can see why people would hate on it. I'll still be hardcore into Bloodborne by the time this comes out for PS4, not like I would buy it again anyway.

Forn3438d ago

It was sooo easy and simple compared to the other two and far less deep. It took no time to get Soul weapons because they didn't require +10 regular weapons, and rings that you can repair so you never lose souls when you die? Pfft. Coupled with a world that pales by comparison and forgettable interactions, I can see why people would hate on it. I'll still be hardcore into Bloodborne by the time this comes out for PS4, not like I would buy it again anyway.

WildArmed3438d ago

I've platted all three games as well.

And Dark Souls 2 was the weakest of them all. It's not a game I'd play again, much rather play Demons / Dark 1.

Neither the bosses nor the locales were as memorable as they were in the previous games.

xActionBasturdx3437d ago

If you ask me DS2 was more about pvp. I loved ruining peoples live in the iron keep lol

Vegamyster3437d ago

I don't hate it but DS1 spoiled me, the first half of that games world was put together very while DS2 was a linear and they rehashed a bunch of bosses, still enjoyed it though.

killacal133438d ago

I'm definiteley going to buy Bloodborne, but I will be getting this game as well, though I do hope that they release just a big bundle for Ps4 that includes all the Souls games.

Forn3438d ago (Edited 3438d ago )

If they brought Demon's Souls and Dark Souls to PS4 I would die. That would be amazing.

Edit: Didn't realize my comment above was posted twice, thought I hit edit on it but it must have created another comment instead. Sorry about that.

nitus103438d ago

I don't have a PS4 yet since the current games on it are not compelling enough for me to buy one. However Dark Souls II and Bloodbourne are now tipping the balance. It does help that I have always liked games from "From Software" and still have my original PS1 "Kings field".

I do have a PS3 and have held off on DSII because I was almost sure that it would be ported to the PS4.

In the interim I am playing Skyrim to death (who really cares to finish this game?) so much so that I thought I would give Oblivion another try (hated it first time and dropped it after 10 hours) since the two games have quite allot of similarity. This time I know what I did wrong and have found that Oblivion is a really good game. Having said that I think I have enough play time for both games that will take me through to February-April next year.

Even when I do get a PS4 I will be keeping my PS3 since I still have allot of PS3 games that I don't mind replaying.

Hellsvacancy3438d ago

I'll be getting this aswel, I wanted to play the dlc but as I KNEW http://n4g.com/news/1624784... DS2 would end up on the PS4/XB1 I decided to wait

This is great news

StrawberryDiesel4203438d ago

Bloodborne will be amazing I'm sure and I can't wait for it, however, Dark Souls has an entirely different setting and game mechanics(No Shield in Bloodborne). Why not play both if you unless you have completed Dark Souls? Anyway, I never got around to completing Dark Souls 2 on PS3(only played about 8 hours total) so I'm definitely scooping this up for my PS4.

Hellsvacancy3437d ago

I don't really see why some people are moaning about no shields in Bloodborne, I personally welcome it

I used to be a shield user throughout all of the Souls games, but then in DS2 I hand a lot of trouble defeating the Ancient Dragon, no matter what I did I just couldn't beat him, until I did it naked without a shield, it was soooooooooo much easier, it felt almost game breaking

From then on I learnt I can play the entire game like that, I owned when it come to PvP

No shields is the way to go

geddesmond3437d ago

I am so glad I skipped out on DS2 for a PS4 because I knew deep down it would eventually come.

TheXgamerLive3437d ago

Funny they used the term SMITE, as SMITE is coming to Xbox One only next year. PC and Xbox One. Smite. Oh yea and Dark Souls 2 is pretty nice too.

MegaSackman3438d ago

Just a few weeks after Bloodborne. Probably won't get this but It's good for Xbox fans.

killacal133438d ago

I'll get it to show support to Fromsoftware, but that's after I finish Bloodborne. We need to remember that companies make games for consoles that support them in general.

jegheist20143438d ago

ill get this fater i run thru bloodborne form onth half or 2 buy it used on sale off ebay for like 45 bux or less since i played it on ps3 nohows

meganick3438d ago

"English mutha fucka, do you speak it!"

killacal133438d ago (Edited 3438d ago )

Do you understand what you just typed? didn't mean to be rude, just thinking that you might be putting the wrong white powder into your coffee.

Blackleg-sanji3438d ago

So is this like a constellation prize for xbox one owners or something cuz i swear most ps4 owners will be playing bloodbourne this seems pointless could have at least added the 1st one and watch it be full price

JimmyDM903438d ago

Consolation prize? Unless the astronomical soceity is giving away copies of Orion's Belt with the game.

Blackleg-sanji3438d ago

Lol hey its 1am here im running on an poorly made cappuccino

jhpadilla3438d ago

Bloodborne looks awesome, but I'm still gonna wait for reviews. IF the reviews are below average I will pickup Dark Souls 2 in less than a heartbeat.

Now, if they price it right, maybe I'll pick both up!

DragonKnight3438d ago

I'm sorry what?

Please forgive me, but I believe I just read a stupid comment.

You have a condition in which you'd pick up Dark Souls 2 over Bloodborne? That's really just wrong.

Dark Souls 2 is, at best, a "meh" title. It's a dumbed down Dark Souls 1 filled with fan service and humanoid enemies with swords and an overhead swing attack. It was developed by FromSoftware's B-Team and rushed to release.

Bloodborne is being co-developed by Sony and the man that created the Souls series, Miyazaki-San. It's more of a spiritual successor to Demon's Souls than even Dark Souls 1 is. Demon's Souls is considered to be the best of the series by many vets of the franchise (including myself) and was also co-developed by Sony and Miyazaki.

There should be no condition in which Dark Souls 2 takes precedence over Bloodborne. There shouldn't even be a doubt that Bloodborne will be a masterpiece given who is developing it, and what we've seen in the alphas.

I am having quite a difficult time understanding your logic.

zero_gamer3438d ago

I'd rather have a Demon's Souls "remaster" over any of the Dark Souls games, much less DS2. At least Demon's Souls has some age, DS2 is a 2014 game, another game that is less than a year old getting the whole next-gen treatment.

Nintendo received a lot of criticism over the past decade for releasing old games, but I personally feel what's happening now is even worse. The market will be saturated with "remastered" last-gen games. If I am wrong you can look back and laugh at this comment for your own amusement years from now.

Exari3438d ago

Totally agreed. many ppl who didnt play demons/dark souls 1 dont know why bloodborne is definitely gonna be better than ds2.. and jhpadilla is definitely one of them. saying "I wait for reviews" to decided whether or not he should buy a game made by miyazaki is dumb..

I'm sure we'll see reviews saying shit like "bad because difficult, not like dark souls, shotgun doesnt do dmg, cant aim while using pistol, not realistic weapons because transforms, 3/10"

mediate-this3438d ago

I'd say dark souls gave demons souls a run for its money. Dark souls did some things better

nitus103438d ago

I have liked the games from "From Software" and even have "Kings Field" 1 (PS1) and 4 (PS2) as well as "Eternal Ring" (PS2). All of those games were first person perspective. Since I have a PS3 I also have Demon's Souls and Dark Souls however have held off on Dark Souls 2 because I thought it would be ported to the PS4.

Personally I prefer Dark Souls over Demon Souls because of the open world environment, however both games are great and I would definitely recommend both before making a decision as to which one you liked best although IMHO by doing that will spoil the uniqueness of both games for you.

As for Bloodborne being better than Dark Souls II I would agree with you given what you have said, however having said that I still find the original Kings Field for the PS1 a really good game to play even though the graphics sucks compared to KF4 on the PS2 and of course the much better graphics of the PS3 Souls series games on the PS3.

Personally I would rather play a game on it's merits and try not to compare although it really is human nature to do this.

Harold_Finch3438d ago

On behalf of all gamers around the world, i apologise for besmirching your precious Bloodborn game Mr. Miyazaki-San.

I can't believe that the creator of the Dark Soul series has an N4G account. (!)

DragonKnight3437d ago

@Harold_Finch: "Mr. Miyazaki-San." is redundant. The title of "Mr." is not required since "San" is essentially the same thing. So basically you called him "Mr. Mr. Miyazaki."

jhpadilla3437d ago

Oh, so I guess now all preview, alphas, and beta are perfectly indicative of a future masterpiece??? Has everyone suddenly and magically forgot so many RECENT PS4 fiascos? Do I really need to list them??

Also I'm never saying that reviews are perfect, far from it, but I want different opinions of someone who has actually played a final version of the game. I also watch game videos and such. I even rent games before I buy them when I'm completely sure.
Why all this? Because I will not give my money for a full priced mediocre game.

Yes I know the first game was better but I don't have enough money, time or inclination to buy a gaming PC or last-gen console. That's why I made that comment. It was just to make the best of my situation.
And BTW the second game is FAR from being a bad game.

I saw all the Bloodbourne previews and it looks amazing, I agree. But I have been a gamer since the Atari 2600 (yes I'm old), so I have been burned by many previews - and, yes, even reviews - since those were just pictures and words printed in magazines. So forgive my caution if I don't jump in the Bloodbourne bandwagon just yet.

I love my PS4 and already bought many awesome games that I play for myself or with friends and family. I want to keep doing that. If Bloodbourne delivers, it will be in my collection. And yes, at the right price, Dark Souls 2 will be too.

Harold_Finch3437d ago

His answer to the commet was despicable.

"Please forgive me but i believe i just read a stupid comment"

That is me readig a weird, obsessive comment with bad grammar problems.
Only the creator of that game should be able to talk to skeptics that way, not an unimportant single fanboy.

DragonKnight3437d ago

@Harold_Finch: Look, feel free to insult yourself by calling yourself unimportant all you want to, but that has nothing to do with you calling someone Mr. Mr.

OB1Biker3438d ago

People still pay attention to 'reviews' nowadays? Only thing good to know is the game is not broken but even for that you can't rely on a review to tell you.

LaChance3438d ago

I guess reviews are just plain wrong all the time and that Sonic Boom is actually GOTY material.

OB1Biker3437d ago

@LaChance
it s your GOTY if you like that game. Again be it for reviews or GOTY people rely too much on the internet to tell them what game they like

Inception3438d ago

"IF the reviews are below average"

Not a million chance. The Gamescom & TGS demo + alpha test got a lot of praise from Souls fans & media. Hidetaka Miyazaki, the man behind Demon's & Dark Souls 1, also directed it.

Beside, if you a fans of Souls series than why the hell you should wait for reviews???

jhpadilla3437d ago

I have to wait because I want it for my PS4.

The game isn't good though.

Rols57d ago

DS2 was fine. While there was a bit of recycling assets or ideas for bosses, it was a bigger more open Dark Souls. The Fume knight boss is one of the hardest bosses in the series until Sekiro and Elden Ring were released.

CrimsonWing6957d ago

The problem with Dark Souls 2 was the same problem when a different director takes over for a sequel to an outstanding movie. It typically (there are exceptions) doesn’t have the feel and vision of the previous movie.

I wouldn’t say Dark Souls 2 is terrible. Had Dark Souls 1 never been a thing and we got this, I think it would have been praised more. The problem is it didn’t have the Miyazaki touch to it and felt pretty derivative. The soundtrack is a banger though.

Aussiesummer57d ago

And it will happen in the future when he doesn’t touch them as he is planning on.

MrBaskerville57d ago

I like DS 2, might even be my favorite of the 3. But it's a hard sell, there's so many obscure things you need to do to make it an enjoyable experience. So always find it hard to recommend, but it is worth the trouble.
