Destiny DLC Should Be Free

Bungie’s latest creation, Destiny, has been through a lot of changes since its launch (which wasn’t that long ago) and the devs keep on morphing it. But small changes, fixing, and patching didn’t bring out Destiny’s best yet, as the game’s final stage is still all about grinding, farming and monotonous routine. So everyone is excited about the upcoming first DLC called The Dark Below which will include all kind of new stuff. This expansion is going to cost players $20 and while some may say that’s a small price, the fact is, it should be totally free.

Gazondaily3434d ago

If I were Bungie, I would seriously consider making the next DLC free, as a sort of way to make up for the disappointment of many. Certainly, the glaring omissions in the so-called story alone would warrant something to make up for the experience.

Just my two cents.

kurruptor3434d ago

Every game will have haters. Popular games will have vocal haters. Millions of people enjoy this game daily.

They don't owe anyone anything.

kazuma9993434d ago

@Septic whiners should stay home and not play it then. If you are still playing it then dont bitch and moan jesus you just want it for free.

BiggerBoss3434d ago

I dont get the singling out of Destiny. In my opinion, ALL DLC should be free for any game, but if youre going to call out Destiny, why not call out COD map packs, season passes, and everything else thats wrong with the industry nowadays

Gazondaily3434d ago (Edited 3434d ago )

@kazuma

Relax. I'm not hating on it. I'm just saying what I would do as a dev. The game had some glaring problems. I'm just stating what I would think would the the clever and equitable thing to do in the circumstance. I'm not bitching about anything.

"why not call out COD map packs, season passes, and everything else thats wrong with the industry nowadays"

Well this article isn't about COD dlc. But if it were, I would be the first one to say how ridiculous their dlc prices are for the content they offer. Mario Kart 8 does it right.

dericb113434d ago

@Septic

So as a Dev you would give a game away because a vocal minority continue to complain about something all the time. Bungie just dropped a 2 GB patch addressing some flaws and adding improvements. They are doing a lot as we speak. The good news is that you and the writer can stop playing this game (I can bet you aren't anyway). There are other games. Warframe is F2P on both PS4 and Xbox One and Halo MCC is out. Go play those and leave Destiny to us who enjoy it.

I'm also going to hire staff, work for months alongside them building additional content for a game most people have already gotten 60+ hours of gameplay from, only to give it away for FREE. Think logically people. Bungie, activision, Sony, Microsoft, they don't owe anyone shit for anything. You make investments in people, time and technology to make more money then was initially spent. Nobody works on goodwill. That turkey you'll be eating Thursday was not free. If you want this DLC, pay for it. Nobody cares about the entitled N4G gamer club.

SCW19823435d ago

"wha I want something for free wha". This self entitled garbage needs to stop. This generation of gamers is a straight up joke. Literally acting like little children that don't get there way. Grow up!

n4rc3434d ago

No kidding..

Its pathetic.. I bought a product a year ago and you arent rewarding me enough!!

I dont like your game even tho I've dumped 300h into it.. You owe me free dlc!!

It truly is sad.. And you said it.. Dlc shouldnt be free, they should grow the f up

Father__Merrin3434d ago

your wrong.........

its because the ammount of content of the DLC it may aswell be free, £19.99 to gain 2 levels no thanks!!!

n4rc3434d ago

Its 4 story, a strike and a raid. On top of 3 mp maps and new gear.. And a cap increase..

Way more then what's standard for dlc..

Either way.. If you don't want it, don't buy it..

If you do want it but simply don't want to pay for it? Tough s#$%... Lol.. Get a job

Baka-akaB3434d ago (Edited 3434d ago )

so what bothers you is that it's disclaimed as two more levels ?

You do realize how long it usually takes (the first time when discovering it at least) to go from 27 to 30 in the original game ?

30 to 32 probably could just be represented as 10 level gaps in other games . It's just a number and how they choose to represent their level systems ... doesnt mean that you'll just casually play a few hours and boom you're level 32 .

Upbeat3434d ago

Considering it made over $10 million dollars on release day and has DLC apparently already on the disk, you think it's OK for them to charge us an extra $20 to unlock the DLC?

Both SCW1982 and N4RC must have sustained brain damage

Baka-akaB3434d ago (Edited 3434d ago )

It is what it is ... and i dont have a good opinion of such dlcs . But what's the point complaining about that for Destiny ? Every big game do it now , and we've known about the pack months before Destiny's launch .

And quite frankly i dont care anymore if it's on disc or not . Even when it isnt , it's obvious that i most cases , its content already is done or well advanced enough , and being held hostage .

It's the very existence of those pre release dlc that is upsetting

Everything should be free. I'd have soooo much stuff, it would be amazing.

Quit being so anti-consumer!

kevinsheeks3434d ago

Your literally the only one who came in responding negatively, Each response before you was just people voicing an opinion.

lipton1013434d ago

Welcome to the N4G entitled gamers club. Most of these kids still have Mommy cut the crust off their toast for them too I guess. Game developers do not work for free. If you want to pick up an SDK kit and make a free game, go ahead, I'm sure it'll be trash, but you get what you pay for (free). Anyone who wants this shit for free is completely oblivious as to how the world works. My old Econ professor always said "There's no such thing as a free lunch."... Or game, for that matter. Pay up whiners

First batch of DLC should be free. Not being funny or anything but I played the beta and was done with that after after 2 days, final game comes out with a few additional strikes and an arse backwards reward system and people wonder why a lot of people are whining.

Solid game mechanics with limited and repetitive content, how someone could have put in over 20 hours let alone 300 is completely beyond me.

CorndogBurglar3434d ago

I find it hard to believe you played the beta after this comment. Either that, or you are just monumentally jaded.

When the full game came out you got way more than a few extra strikes. The beta only had the Clamoring stuff on it, and one multiplayer map on the moon. I don't even think the beta had any of the strikes on it, if i remember correctly.

Stop exaggerating.

OmegaShen3434d ago

No, because this the same people that is ok paying for dlc in other games. I got more then what I paid out of it, funny part.

Dark Below is free for me, sorry babies.

martinezjesus19933434d ago (Edited 3434d ago )

I paid 10 dollars for the game itself and 35 for the expansion pass, ive put over 150 hours into it and im set on leveling up my 29 warlock to 30, 27 hunter to atleast 29, and my 8 Titan, which i just started a couple hours ago, to atleast 26/27, all before the first expansion. I should have over 200 hours into it by then. 200hours of play time for 10 dollars, (not including the 35 ofcourse) you could say I got WAAAAAAAY more than what i paid for. The expansions are basically free for me as well.

Destiny Made Over $160 Million In Microtransaction Revenue In Less Than 2 Years

Destiny has made over $160 million in MTX revenue, and these numbers only account the data from late 2017 to early 2019.

Sgt_Slaughter326d ago

That's extremely low for microtransactions, especially for a game that's essentially designed around it

LucasRuinedChildhood326d ago (Edited 326d ago )

This was back when the game wasn't free to play.

The figures are from November 2017 to February 2019 (1 year and 4 months).

Based on that projection, the MTX revenue for Destiny 2 likely would have been closer to ~$240m for 2 years.

Not sure if premium expansions are included in that figure either although ... I'd hope that they are though and that most of the revenue was for actual content like Forsaken.

People spend way too much money on cosmetics.

Rude-ro326d ago (Edited 326d ago )

Seasons($10 and just got bumped to $12) and dungeon keys($10 each, two a year) are through the eververse(micro transaction) store.
So for those two years, in order to play a season, you would pay through micro transactions.

Sonic1881326d ago (Edited 326d ago )

Bungie Marathon will be worse since it's designed around it as well

Kurt Russell325d ago

It makes me sad to agree... but at the same time I am looking forward to giving it a go. Destiny 2 is so far in, I find it difficult to figure out what I am meant to do first.

buffig326d ago

I think FIFA alone makes over $1bn a year from mtx

anast326d ago

FIFA promotes a worldwide sport. It should make more money than destiny.

CantThinkOfAUsername326d ago (Edited 326d ago )

Let's compare something similar. Apex Legends and its ridiculous $18/$40 skins make EA a billion each year.

z2g326d ago

For as much as ppl complain how much they hate microtransactions, they sure don’t act like it. No wonder they aren’t going anywhere.

spicelicka326d ago

By "people" you're referring to millions and millions of people. Obviously the ones complaining aren't necessarily the same as the ones spending all that money.

There's millions that purchase MTX and there's nothing we can do about it

CobraKai477d ago

That’s the sad reality of a game like this. I bought it, invested lots of money, and it can go away at anytime. I still think this was more fun than 2.

jeromeface476d ago

prob because 2 is a grindfest slog

That's the bummer of 'games as a service'.
