Playstation 4 Continues To Outpace PS2, Challenging Wii For Fastest-Selling Console

In a conversation with IGN, Sony Computer Entertainment America's President and CEO Shawn Layden confirmed that PS4 has continued to sell at a high rate, outpacing PlayStation 2's astounding sales a year out from their respective releases.

PS4's success "certainly surprised some analysts who will go unnamed in this conversation, who have been announcing the death of console for quite some time," he said. "The next-gen platforms right now -- I don't have the numbers -- this generation has grown faster, further, wider, broader than any other game generation in the past. PlayStation 4 is leading that entire charge in next-gen."

Some are saying the PS4 is the new PS2. I see it more as the new PS1.

Mainly because of the way everything played out was very similar to the reveal and release of the PS1 vs the Sega Saturn.

I'm sure there are way more who grew up on the PS2 than the PS1 so their view of it being like the PS2 is justified.

Hmmm. Interesting. I don't think it will outsell the PS2 or sell faster than the Wii (Wii was selling over 20 million units Year 2 and Year 3).

However, I do think it'll sell more than the Wii's lifetime sales, and will get there within the next 6 years. PS4 is poised to knock Gameboy out of the spot for 3rd best selling game device.

The Tomorrow Children also looks unbelievably good. A lot of AAA exclusives not yet announced yet. Hopefully some will be at the Playstation experience in early December. Planetside 2 beta should be out before the end of the year so hopefully the full release in the first quarter of 2015.

That mainly happened because of how weak the Wii was compaired to the PS3/ 360. That clearly won't be the case with the PS4.

Not to mention that nintendo had loosened their grip on 3rd party support. They were looking for anything and everything that wanted to release on the wii. Shovelware a plenty but so many hidden gems as well.

Keep in mind that the bigger your platform popularity, the tougher it is to keep the shovelware out. PS1 and PS2 both had their fair share as well.

If PS4 were to drop the price to match the XB1 $350, it would be a lock. I understand why the haven't but I'm sure I read a few months back saying that PS4 was already profitable.

Well considering they were not taking a loss to begin with on the hardware side of things I think they are doing pretty good. At least better than Microsoft and Nintendo when it came to making money off the hardware. Nintendo started taking a loss on the Wii U by lowering the price and including a game and Microsoft doing the same but taking a even bigger loss.

A price drop will come but the way the PS4 has been selling indicates that there is no need for it right now. A business will always want to make the most profit that they can for as long as they can.

PS4 is selling so well but the gaming division is doing average at best.

In Q2 they only made $200 million... That's less than Nintendo, you know, that irrelevant dead company.

What's even worse is that the gaming divisions profit gets swallowed by Sony's massive losses.

Sony has also given up on the PS Vita, plus Sony's first party titles have not been that great for this year. The media loves to play up the hype of the PS4's sales, which is fine.

But as a gamer, I'm not impressed with the exclusive games or the killing of the Vita.

The good news is that you are a gamer.

As gamers, we play games that appeal to our individual preferences regardless of platform or supporting corps.

What the hell are you talking about?? In the last quarter Nintendo incurred a $1.8 million operating loss despite the upsurge in game sales and the net profit was only $120 million which is less than your own stated Sony's $200 million. Furthermore, Nintendo has been suffering losses for the past three years as well even though gaming is its only business with nothing else to drag it down. Check your figures before you troll. Here read the article and convert the Yen figures in to USD.

Sony has been suffering losses just as many if not more losses than Nitnendo.

I'm not trolling. I'm not happy with the quality of games like DriveClub, Knack, and Killzone ShadowFall.

And Sony has even admitted there will be a lower amount of Vita games.

PS4 smoked Wii U and Xbox One yet look at Sony's situation.

The first party games are lackluster on PS4, and the Vita has been left to die. As a gamer, I'm not happy with the quality of Sony's games. I don't give a damn how many PS4's they have sold.

I want better games, not Killzone, Knack, and Driveclub. I'm super pumped for Bloodborne and Uncharted 4, but so far, the PS4 exclusives have been sub par.

I need to buy a Wii U but I am so back logged with DA:I, Costume Quest 2, LB P3, and FarC 4 and life I'm already spread to thin. But it's absolutely an amazing console that will be in my possession one day. Sorry for the monologue but I was reminded of this fact.

*facepalm* Man open your eyes and read that article you linked carefully. You will feel quite embarrassed when you see it. The article is twisting and spinning the actual net profit. It says that they "gained" more than 200 million from before because they lost $90 is the previous quarters. They are just saying that they improved by more than $200 million since they were 90 million in the negative last quarter. That is not the actual net profit. The actual net profit is the Y14.3 billion which equals to $120 million. That is clearly a fanboy spin on the actual figures. Even the conversion rate is wrong. Can you find that figure anywhere else on the web? Stop relying on such biased and invalid sources.

PS4 will outsell Wii lifetime easily. Wii did great in first few years because so many people were buying it on a whim before it took an immediate nose dive. Nintendo isn't known for giving their console a long lifespan. Sony, however, is. Let's not forget the Wii was poised to outsell PS2, but only came up 55 million short (lol).
