PS4 not selling bad for Japan. Wii U losing steam in its only lead region though.

Neonridr3459d ago

Smash Brothers will change all that.

Concertoine3459d ago

Will it? I feel like Smash 3DS will take a chunk of its impact in Japan.

ABizzel13459d ago (Edited 3459d ago )

@Neonridr

Smash will help, but I see PS4 catching Wii U in Japan in 2015. They just have way too many A - AAA games coming out for the market, for most JP gamers not to own one.

Final Fantasy 15, Bloodbourne, MGSV, Persona 5, Yakuza 0, Resident Evil Remake, Resident Evil Revelations 2, The Order (shockingly enjoyed there), Ys, Tekken 7, Dragon Quest Heroes, Disgaea 5, God Eater 2, Deep Down, and possibly something GT7 related.

That's 14 games (excluding GT7), which means at least 1 big JP game per month is coming to Sony's console. It's just too much to overcome, Nintendo has games too, but it has it's work cut out for it in JP this year to keep it's console lead.

Griever3459d ago (Edited 3459d ago )

Even if it does, what happens after? If you are going to say Zelda, then what after that? That is the problem with Wii U; it has very little ammo to use due to lack of third party games. That is the sole reason for the poor sales; potential customers do not see what they will be playing in the future. PS4 on the other hand has a future full of games so people are buying it even without any major games released. Just imagine that it took Nintendo Wii U almost all of its major exclusives to reach the current sales levels in Japan and PS4 is selling almost equally or more without any of its major exclusives or multiplats being released. It is like a person fights blindfolded and still draws the match or barely loses or occasionally even wins it. What do you think will happen when he takes off the blindfold?

Neonridr3459d ago

@ABizzel1 - I never meant to imply that it will change it forever. But it will help move some consoles in Japan, that's for sure.

Of course the PS4 will take off once gamers get the real games thye want to play.

@Griever - I never implied that it was a permanent change, only that it will leapfrog until it dies down again.. After Zelda? I dunno, another Mario game? A Monster Hunter Game? an Animal Crossing game? A Pokemon game? Who knows.. all I know is if any of those games listed above release for the Wii U, expect sales to go bananas..

The 10th Rider3459d ago (Edited 3459d ago )

@ABizzel1

I agree withe some of those games...But The Evil Within gave the PS4 a boost of less than 1,000. And according to Famitsu polls it was pretty highly anticipated and had been for a decent amount of time ( http://nintendoeverything.c... )

Quite a few of those games you listed won't have much of an impact. That's not to say the rest of them won't. Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, and Kingdom Hearts will be huge, of course, but a few of the others aren't likely to chart for long or put too much oomph into sales.

ABizzel13459d ago

@Neonridr

I know you didn't I was just point that out.

And I agree with your second post about games like Pokemon, Monster Hunter doing big things for the Wii U. But at this rate, it's likely Monster Hunter will become a PS4 console exclusive, and a 3DS handheld exclusive, and if that happens Sony has won JP.

@The 10th Rider

The only games that I think would only provide a modest boost for a single week would be RER2 (since it's probably digital only), The Order, Ys, and Disgaea 5.

Everything else has proven to be good sellers in JP (the souls games have all sold well over there BB and DD should do well), RE, MGS, Final Fantasy, Yakuza, Tekken, Dragon Quest, Persona, and God Eater all do great in JP. So that's 8 AAA games, 2 at least AA games (BB and DD), and 4 A games based on the JP sales trends.

That's a huge line-up and I agree that that A games will only provide a modest boost, but looking at the AA - AAA sales are going to JUMP in JP for the PS4 in 2015, and they're all practically PS4 exclusives in the land of JP (except maybe Tekken, which could make it's way to Wii U).

The 10th Rider3459d ago

@ABizzel1

Eh, I'm still a bit skeptical...A lot of those sold well 2 or 3 years ago...We don't really have anything recent to go off of...The Evil Within, from the makers of Resident Evil, didn't come anywhere close to Resident Evil 6 a few years back. Resident Evil Revelations wasn't too huge, either. The Persona fighting game back in August wasn't so hot either. Neither was Tekken Tag Tournament.

Consoles are just in a different spot now. The direct comparisons we have for a lot of those games is back when the PS3 was selling 4 or 5 times more than the PS4 is now, and some console games were selling 5 or 10 times as much as they would now.

A lot of console games in Japan recently just fail to capture the interest they once would have. All around, for both Sony and Nintendo.

I think those games will give it a decent boost and a bit of momentum, but Japan will really have to warm back up to home consoles before we see anything close to what we once did.

ABizzel13459d ago

You're also comparing sales of a console that has a +10m install base in JP (PS3) to a console that doesn't have 1 million users in JP (PS4) and has no AAA Japanese games on it at the moment.

Final Fantasy is a proven seller there, Yakuza is a proven seller there, MGS is a proven seller there, Persona (the JRPG's which P5 is) are proven sellers there, Resident Evil aka Biohazard are proven sellers there, and God Eater is a proven seller there.

The rest of the games will do well for JP (around 200k - 300k), or be surprise hits (+500k). I agree the JP console market is dwindling slowly (but it's always been around 30m gamers or less console wise), and IMO 2015 will be the proving ground for the market. I suspect PS4 to shift around 2 million consoles in JP next year if all these games launch (especially Final Fantasy 15). If it struggles to get pass 1 million then I'm completely on board with the JP console market is dead, and it's time to find a new number 3.

The 10th Rider3459d ago (Edited 3459d ago )

@ABizzel1,

A year from release, the PS3 was selling 5 times what the PS4 is selling now.

I'm not saying it'll do horribly, or worse than the Wii U...But to expect it to be even close to successful compared the any of the previous gens is just blind.

N4g_null3459d ago

ABizzel1 the ps4 has one very big problem, taxes. Taxes are based on price sure the ps4 will sell well but price hurts sony two fold. Even I'm curious about blood born but really based on the track record of Japanese studios many just can't matched the game play quality that past teams mastered. So only a few games are surviving. Doubling down on graphics only is a bad move. The quality of games are not going up just the graphics. A phone game is more addictive to them than a console game.

The quality of triple a in game play is severely lacking. So 3rd parties are not a good answer unless they can up their quality. We just get a ton more mediocre games. A similar situation happened to the vita. So many games were coming. It even bested the 3ds. Once people realize they were not having fun they switched. The problem for sony is they can not up their own game pool themselves. They make mediocre games themselves.

To put it in context a great athlete makes your team shine. 3rd parties use to be an all star team. Now we have replaced those guys with people that didn't really earn the status of triple a.

It has been a ton of games on both ps4 and xbone that where duds. They all banked on visual hype. One look at the true game play and you just don't want to grab a controller.

Hey but we will see.

I actually find the ps4 sales concerning for home consoles in Japan. The XBOX one is doing exceptionally poor and the Wii U sales are pretty poor as well....but the ps4 is still doing fairly poor even with the release of one of the highest anticipated games there (Going by Famitsu's polls.)

If home consoles dip too much more, we could see most Japanese developers who don't have much Western appeal ditching home consoles entirely.

For both the Wii U and the PS4, a new game releases and sales spike, and then they dip back down. Every time the spike gets smaller and the dip gets lower.

Not to mention another version of Yo-kai Watch 2...

ABizzel13459d ago

3DS: Owns JP

Vita: Doing pretty good.

PS4: Doing pretty good, 2015 is going to be huge for them.

Wii U: Falling off, Smash should help.

XBO: And there it goes.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory3459d ago

Mario Kart 8 bundle is coming

llxKonanxll3459d ago

3DS on top, PS4 ahead of the WiiU for a couple weeks!! Xbone One has low sales again.

G20WLY3459d ago (Edited 3459d ago )

Maybe we'll see a surge for X1 next week and it will manage to sell more than PS TV? Maybe not though. :(

benji1013459d ago

The wii u sales are down because of the new bundles that are due out in 2 weeks.

Smash for wii u is a big deal in Japan. The ps4 numbers are low considering the releases.

What, I thought this was dead after Shawn Layden left Sony. I would definitely pick this up if it's true. I have such great memories of playing the MediEvil games on PS1 and I played the PS4 remake. Such a great and underrated series.

Cacabunga7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

A rumored game at a rumored show.. we’ve seen it all

TiredGamer7h ago

Agreed. The first remake was stylistically beautiful and a very noticeable improvement over the original in every regard. And it was reasonably priced and sustainably developed (i.e. not some mega big budget game that was do or die for the developer).

Zeke689h ago

Thanks for the spoilers... :(

RonnySins9h ago

Another day, another remake. Ugh!

SonyStyled8h ago

If you played the original print I can see your annoyance. I didn’t and probably a lot others the past 20 years.

Was it any good? Would you suggest playing the original print of 2, or suggest the remake? Just wondering because I didn’t play the originals as I had an n64 at the time

TiredGamer7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

I played the first remake and absolutely loved it. The quality of life and control improvements were very noticeable. I tried playing the PS1 original and gave up halfway through at the janky controls.

Expect the same for part 2. The PS1 version is janky as heck, but I would gobble up an improved remake day one.

The beauty of this kind of stuff is that I find myself enjoying more retro gaming today, so a relatively low budget classic remake (call it a single-A release) is exactly what is missing from first party releases in the modern age. I don’t want every game to be an unsustainable AAAA endeavor that is just overwhelming in every regard. Truly miss when game releases could be modest-sized surprises and still be commercially successful/viable.

Bring on more quality classic remakes!

DarXyde17m ago

I can see your frustration and mostly agree, but modern remakes of games lost eras ago are fine if you ask me.

I don't know how old you are, but I was a kid when the first Medievil came out. It's really for a new generation of gamers more than anything and the industry is at a point now where there is an insane number of current gamers who missed out on those classics.

If we're talking about remakes of The Last of Us or remasters of GTAV, I'm in agreement. Otherwise, the choice to remake games like Final Fantasy VII, Medievil, Parappa, etc. are fair to me. Even PS2 era games being remade would be welcome to me. Often, the tech updates make it worth it.

Knightofelemia9h ago

Such a good series I also wish Sony would dust off Wild Arms and Legend of Dargoon even the Legend series needs to see the light again.

Omegasyde8h ago

My bets on new Socom and/or Wolverine (since Deadpool 3 is dropping in the summer).

I think one after this state of play will be PS5 pro preorder

InUrFoxHole3h ago

SOCOM! SOCOM! SOCOM!
But please not like Socom 4
