Xbox One fans should be ecstatic their console is "losing" to Sony's PlayStation 4

Ben Kuchera: Competition is great, and Microsoft being in second place this generation may be the best thing to happen to Xbox fans in some time. Microsoft will become more aggressive in pricing, in features and in signing exclusives.

Microsoft can't coast on past successes, which means it has to work twice as hard to find new ones. That's something that should excite everyone with an Xbox One, or who is thinking of buying one.

Neonridr3468d ago

I don't want to rain on anyone's parade here, but technically they are in third...

Gazondaily3467d ago

Second or third, it doesn't matter. It just ensures what I've said for a long time. This is the position MS deserve to be in, on the ropes, back behind the wall with no choice but to deliver what the gamers want.

These companies always need reminding about where their prorities should lie, and we did that last year and continue to do that now.

I strongly believe that this will be one of the best generations of gaming (minus some annoying practices that have become commonplace). Many of the gimmicks have now been filtered out (motion controls, casual gaming focus etc) and gaming is squarely at the forefront of it all.

So yeah, X1 fans should be ecstatic that the company is 'losing' to the PS4. It's MS' money, let them spend as much as possible in a desperate bid to make us happy :)

PONTIAC08G8GT3467d ago (Edited 3467d ago )

Please explain why MS "deserves" to be where they are? Is it because you're still upset about what they announced over a YEAR ago? That sounds very childish. Time to get over it. Trust me, MS isn't "on the ropes", it's MS. They changed their system just to appeal to those who cried about it. They got rid of Kinect. Made Live Gold better. Discounted the system. Provide monthly updates. Gave away free games with system purchases. What more do you want? A handy? Come on already...

VforVideogames3467d ago

and that is why sony deliver all those great titles on Ps3 ( on the ropes, back behind the wall with no choice but to deliver what the gamers want)
but its not delivering on Ps4 because its Microsoft's turn to deliver.

UltimateMaster3467d ago (Edited 3467d ago )

They should be happy because now they can make any request to Microsoft and they will be forced to please their fans.

Obviously, if they can't fulfill that request, then they can look elsewhere.

@PONTIAC08G8GT
...except that is exactly what PlayStation has been doing for years. If you want to get some credit, do it over something that has never been done before instead of being a copy cat.
If you're a copy cat, then people will follow the original leader. If anything, that help people made their decision on getting PS+ because Gold Live tries to be like it.

tlougotg3467d ago

Exactly! If this system would have been number 1, doing Sony numbers this system would not look the way it does now and all that anti consumer crap that Microsoft wanted to do would be in place and they would be shafting consumers. Dont be fooled Microsft didnt change stance because they felt bad for gamers, they changed their stance because they saw Sony was whipping that %ss and consumers were going Sony so they had to to salvage the situation.

This also applies to Nintendo with their close minded thinking. Im hoping the lack luster performance of Wiiu has forced them to make a stronger machine with better features to be able to stand toe to toe with the next systems the big two bring out.

Without Ps4 dominating gamers wouldnt have had a kinectless Xbone, DRM would have been the way it was presented during Xbone reveal, you wouldnt be getting free games and rebates with purchase of Xbone, etc.... and other things.

donthate3467d ago

I don't think we want any company to be loosing money. Let's face it, as business owner myself, the going is though and your employees depend on you to provide them a living.

However, I think MS has never been in a better position. Every console sold isn't a loss leader, and it is just profit or break-even on each console sold, and profit on everything else.

But yeah, this is most definitely a good thing for Xbox gamers as we witnessed how MS is leapfrogging their competitors on almost all levels.

4Sh0w3467d ago (Edited 3467d ago )

lol, but weren't all these games planned LONG before X1 was "losing" to ps4?

The Bad:
Also Microsoft has always been aggressive its just a matter of in which direction like with all the Kinect focus games which although I love Kinect and want more implementation in core games the full Kinect games focus is one of their biggest errors.

The Good:
The good aggressive online strategy has always been there, the 3rd party aggressive deals has always been there, and the aggressive marketing has been there, all this is good. They've said LONG before X1 was announced they were getting back to their roots and investing heavily in CORE GAMES(I remember when they talked of billions invested in core games, many here called them liars, saying all the exclusives would be Kinect kiddie games) so that and everything they are doing now looks that way but that's before they were losing so I'll give 'em a lil credit for knowing they slacked off with Kinect based games, not anything to do with ps4 in that regard. If anything whats really refreshing is that I like their new willingness to listen to feedback and make swift changes, so overall I do think like any company that wants to "beat the competition" Yes being behind makes you try harder but in general I think micro is mostly benefitting from lessons learned off of 2 previous generations of consoles more than anything else.

D-riders3467d ago (Edited 3467d ago )

MS deserves to be in the place they are in for a bunch of reason. how about 56.6.% failure rate of their last system for one. Or how about them trying to change the meaning of why own a console with their policies. or how about the reports that they knew the xbox 360 was broken before they shipped it. to say they shouldn't be in the place they are in makes you a fool. Pontiac< xbox Fans are like what jim carey said in liar liar. lay down and take and this time put some stank on it ike.

CYCLEGAMER3467d ago

@Septic
I am kind of 50/50 on this on one hand I am glad that MS has been humbled but, they have put out an awesome product. I think that they are being unfairly criticized and hated for nothing.

Biased gaming journalism and outright hatred is very unnesesarry.

pompombrum3467d ago

Couldn't agree more, for too long now Microsoft have been too focused on kinect and the Wii crowd and it's about time it came back to bite them. If Microsoft stays committed to making Xbox a success again, it can only be a good thing for X1 owners and gamers in general. In the first few years of the 360's lifespan, there was so many great games, if they try and replicate that with the X1, it's going to be a great time to be an X1 owner.

3467d ago
gamer93467d ago

I want to play online games with friends and XBL is tops as usual. Awesome controller and substantial monthly updates are a nice little bonus. Disagree all you want I could not be happier, thanks PS4 for outselling the X1!! =)

sonarus3467d ago

Xbox one is a compelling system. The $350 price drop i suspect is here to stay. This is where i always felt microsoft should be spending their money. Creating additional value for gamers instead of buying up exclusives and creating an uproar for games that won't deliver until PS4 has ballooned its lead to the point where the xbox becomes irrelevant.

Microsoft needs to act now and aggressivley and the price drop is the quickest action that can take to reap immediate benefits. Buying new exclusives will take 2+ yrs to materialize while ps4 could continue could to run away with first place

esemce3467d ago

Lets hope that this time they put some money into new Ip's and devs to deliver some REAL exclusives and not just splash the cash for timed BS.

I really want MS and Sony to do well but with real exclusives as by this Friday I will own the Xbone to go along side my PS4.

Angelus_Mauris3467d ago

Microsoft as a company is absolutely disgusting. They were ready to completely screw over everybody and thought that people would just line up and take it up the ass. What's happening instead is absolutely glorious. M$ making price cut after price cut, 180's on half the xbone's DRM policies, "S-SUMMER IS JUST A SLOW SEASON, I-IT's WHY SALES DON'T MATTER DURING THE SUMMER".

Absolutely glorious. Hope microshaft learns this the hard way. People aren't completely retarded.

spacedelete3467d ago

i wish Sony was in third place as it would mean they would actually listen to us and give us some more features and better plus games.

UltimateMaster3467d ago

@4sh0w

"They've said LONG before X1 was announced they were getting back to their roots and investing heavily in CORE GAMES (I remember when they talked of billions invested in core games, many here called them liars, saying all the exclusives would be Kinect kiddie games)"

Yeah! that's why they invested 2.5 billion on buying Minecraft! /s

LoneWolf0193467d ago

May be the best generation of consoles but the communities are almost not worth it

Picnic3467d ago (Edited 3467d ago )

Sony deserve to be in first place because of the generosity of the PS3's free online (I know it's not free any more) and the power of the PS4.

That said, the power of the PS4 does not equal
'ALL the best exclusives'.

But when Sony isn't giving over a year lead any more, when the PS4 has some of the best exclusives, mostly all of the best versions of the many third party games and a market that doesn't care much about motion control, the Xbox One becomes the cult, niche, sell in comparison. Regardless of some special exclusives on Xbox One and regardless of whether its exclusives like this are sometimes funkier, it might have to be happy selling half what the PS4 does. I do think that Insomniac made a good long term move by going Xbox One exclusive though- best chance to grow this franchise away from Infamous, which would have felt its toes stepped on, and away from Naughty Dog on PS4. Sony simply wouldn't have wanted it enough - or wanted to promote it enough- in comparison to Microsoft. Microsoft will be very pleased to have this game. It can pull in young gamers and old school gamers alike. It's like it was meant for the Xbox One- it's like back to the original Xbox days with Jet Set Radio Future, only pumped up with even more energy and actual danger. And Phil Spencer is the ideal person to have in charge at Microsoft when launching a game.

ikkokucrisis3467d ago

If they sell the Xbone bundled w/ MCC for $400 I'll get it!

2008prochargedgt3467d ago

@pontiac08g8gt if you are cool with a company telling you one thing then a mere few months doing a complete 180 cough we will never unbundle kinect cough We just cant flip a switch to turn around drm cough its your money. I on the other hand have pushed my chips in with the company that has a proven track record of delivering AAA after AAA

GameNameFame3467d ago

With temporary exclusives?

With PC games ?

Same as last gen. They stopped after 2 years.

ikkokucrisis3467d ago

Oh shucks, I jumped the gun and didn't hear they were going to lower the base price of the Xbone to $350.

MCC Xbone bundle for $350 is my new entry price point!

k3rn3ll3467d ago

I wouldn't say casual gaming focus has been filtered out. It's actually on the rise, with the increase in independent publishing, and won't be going anywhere anytime soon. Look at Steam for example. There are in dire need of getting the ammount of shovelware under control. Which is what they are trying to do with recent additions of tags, curated lists. Hopefully the new consoles will find a way around that after a couple years.

chaosx3467d ago

Seems maybe Sony needs a turn on the ropes , cause since they took the lead , exclusives are lacking ,UI updates for PS4 are pretty slow and PS + has gone down the toilet.

ChronoJoe3467d ago (Edited 3467d ago )

This argument doesn't make much sense to me.

If they were to be in a situation where they were winning, it would have been because they had a better console than they do now, with better games / services, cheaper pricepoint, etc. So it's only 'better' to be losing if we're comparing it to the hypothetical alternative where they would be winning while offering the same, or less of a service to consumers than they are now.

It's akin to saying "I'm glad my computers faulty, because now it has plentiful room for improvement". It doesn't change the fact that you would have been better off, with a better computer to begin with. It's just positives spin.

If we reflect on generations prior, little good has come from 'losing'. In particular despite strong first party support and incentives, the consoles have still suffered at the hand of third party publishers (third rate ports (Wii U) and a lack of support (Wii U, XBOX Original).

While this is a positive way of looking at a bad situation, it would have be better if the console was in first place, because it would have meant Microsoft had shipped a better console to begin with.

TheSaint3467d ago

Yes, because MS have always been about the gamer......

That was sarcasm.

miyamoto3467d ago

Give it away give it away give it away give it away now
Give it away give it away give it away give it away now
Give it away give it away give it away give it away now
I can't tell if I'm a kingpin or a pauper

Seriously

I know M$ can give away XB1s for free and not even feel a pinch but that is not how this game is played.

Sad Story for M$ really.

They brought it upon themselves though.

alb18993467d ago

That is true but is true too that SONY deserve to be in third next year because they aren't delivering the quality of games that people hope.
Is even stupid for a gamer that can have an xboxone and don't have it.
I'm enjoying my Xbox like never before!

Spenok3467d ago

Well said. It's the reason Sony was in 3rd place for so long last generation, and why they are doing so well now. They listened, and continue to listen to their fans. Now that they know what it's like to be in last, they don't want to fall there again. Here's hoping they don't get complacent in the future.

MS has done an admirable job with the Xbone since it was initially launched. They continue to add software updates frequently, and have already had a few decent looking exclusives. If they keep it up they will do much better than they have.

As you say, let them spend their money to make the masses happy. We all know they have it lol.

ZombieKiller3467d ago

@PONTIAC08G8GT Because when MS is winning, things get more expensive. Heller freaking Keller can see them sweating at this point and with a sweet $350 price tag not a little more than a year after launch, and you should too.

Dude, be grateful they're getting their asses handed to them. Maybe then they'll see what they made which was a game console instead of another way to make major money off of peoples hobbies. They need to be in this spot so their heads can deflate off of the 360's success. I'd say the same thing about Sony if they acted like this.

It's not me vs you because I chose PS and you chose Xbox. We are all gamers. We all spend XX amount of money with these big ass corporations making millions from us. We all enjoy games. We all hate something in the industry. So why is everyone fighting?
Why aren't we teaming up and fishing out the crappy games/practices rather than displaying the constant dissatisfaction over what SOMEONE ELSE bought?
I think that MS needs this to happen because they are still too high on the success of the 360.
Seriously think about what the xbox one would be if it was COMPLETELY successful from start to finish:

1.) No used games
2.) No single player without internet
3.) $500
4.) Integrated TV capability that hinders the CPU resources
5.) Maybe even higher XBL sub now with all these integrated features (which I think was their original goal)
...and quite a few others to add that I can't think of right now but my point is (feel free to add any if need be) that the competition is killing it right now and without that competition....without CHOICE, the xbox would be a nightmare. Hold off a little longer and I bet you the deal will get even sweeter. Seriously, who wants all that extra stuff at the compromise of your gaming console? I understand if it was an add on, but nothing like that should be mandatory, it just creates excuses for bigger companies to charge more for thin air. Get back on the games MS...
I'll trade that TV feature for solid resolution and frame rate any day....it's the reason I bought a game console....to game.

Plus we all know the PS is way better.....
LOL! JUST KIDDING! I had to after that speech! Give it some time, and I bet the xbox deal will sweeten.

lawgone3466d ago

Well said pontiac08g8gt. People complaining over policies MS changed long ago to please them sound extremely childish. I HAD both the PS4 and XB1. Sold the PS4 because I didn't use it and found the online play to be inferior. I bought it again a couple months later because I wanted to like it and hoped they'd improved it. Nope. Sold that one too. My XB1 gets lots of use, runs great and has no issues. People that don't check it out or are "angry" at Microsoft are just foolish in my opinion. I know this is N4G so let the disagrees come.

When talking about next gen, does anyone really talk about the Wii U? Not really. I mean if we want to get technical, why not add in the DS sales?

I personally don't care about which system is selling better than the other. I care about the games since thats why I bought the system. PS can continue to sell well and lead this generation, but as long as MS keeps pumping out exclusives like Forza, Forza Horizon, Sunset, Titanfall (even tho may be on PS next), I'm happy.

MysticStrummer3467d ago

Many people didn't talk about the Wii as being part of the PS3/360 generation, but that doesn't change the fact that it was. It's not getting technical to include another home console from this generation in the conversation with PS4/XB1.

nicksetzer13467d ago

Honestly, who cares. The point of the story (to which I agree) is that xbox one has become one of the most consumer centric consoles ever and has a great influx of amazing games. Had they had a huge sale lead, the outcome may have just been a bit different. Motivation to push their console sales has been nothing but a great thing.

ThatOneGuyThere3467d ago (Edited 3467d ago )

"great influx" I dont know about that. I would say that some of their exclusives are coming out earlier than a lot of PS4's exclusives. When Uncharted 4 comes out, are we going to re-write this article the other way? The fact remains that Sony built a better machine for games.

Wikkid6663467d ago

The comment was based on the US market... and they are in second place in the US.

donthate3467d ago

I think it is short sighted to call it third, when it is selling at a faster clip than a Wii U for sure, and gives the PS4 good competition in the western world.

I'm quite glad MS is the underdog as they have certainly brought their A game and is in my opinion the best console out there right now.

MS really stepped up their game, and is fast and furiously making great changes on a monthly basis.

BVFTW3467d ago

I'd like to disagree, the cornered animal is Nintendo whose pulling the weigth of the low adoption rate of the Wii U with releasing exclusive after exclusive of varied games "full of content", I look at super smash in awe at the sheer amount of content it has, but I agree that the xbone is putting a hell of a fight as well. I have all current platforms but the xbone and its really making me think on a future purchase, that catalogue in the making seems as good as its competitors, maybe this will be a new golden age for gaming, being a platform agnostic will pay off for sure!

AngelicIceDiamond3467d ago

@Neon Even better.

MS with 5 million units behind PS4 is giving me the games and content that I been wanting since the latter half of 360 life cycle.

I'm a afraid that would happen if they get comfortable with their sales if they ever pass PS4. With Phil around that's not likely to happen but currently MS is in a good place.

Like I said I play games, not sales.

BoriboyShoGUN3467d ago

I hear you, I just don't know what games you're referring to near the end of the 360's life cycle???

joeorc3467d ago

This is what happens when the perceived market leader stumbles badly out of the gate and then gets serious about making up ground.

seen as MARKET LEADER?

LOL...

Exactly! Microsoft is in 3RD place

NINNTENDO IS IN 1st place with the most console systems in retail chain @ 6
Sony is in 2nd place. with 5 console systems at retail

MICROSOFT IS IN 3RD PLACE WITH 2 console systems @ retail chain to sell to consumers, MICROSOFT DOES NOT EVEN HAVE A MOBILE XBOX CONSOLE IN THE MARKET and at this point even with the purchase ;of Nokia i doubt we will ever see a mobile xbox.

3467d ago
Malacath3467d ago

How are they third?

There is no way the Wii U is selling better than the xbox one. Not in the countries that matter anyway. Besides the Wii U is a generation behind so isn't in the same class as the ps4 or x1.

The xbox one is in the same position the ps3 was in last generation. 2nd place.

Theyellowflash303467d ago

No, they are in third place.

Nintendo has sold more Wii U's than Microsoft has sold Xbox One's...therefore they are in 3rd place.

Nintendo has also sold more software on the Wii U than Microsoft has sold on Xbox One.

So with hardware and software... Nintendo has sold better this gen. Microsoft is in 3rd place....deal with it.

choujij3467d ago

"Besides the Wii U is a generation behind so isn't in the same class as the ps4 or x1."

Considering the Xbone desperately struggles to render games in native 1080p (much like the Wii-U does, albeit having better hardware specs), why is it okay the Xbone be in the same class as PS4 and not the Wii-U? Shouldn't they both be included in the same class or excluded equally?

Pogmathoin3467d ago

BoriboyShoGUN3467d ago

I agree that's what they needed, was a good kick in the teeth!!!!The Xbox guys will definitely benefit from it, they already have begun to turn things around.

beereal3603467d ago

To be honest xbox one is better than ps4. My ps4 is collecting dust because no good games and I just enjoy my xbox way more.

memots3467d ago

Maybe you should own one.

BVFTW3467d ago

Hey #memots why so serious? the guy is talking about his experience, I have a PS4 too but I've only enjoyed Infamous Second Son so far, I'm planning on getting first light but besides this and Resogun I have nothing else to play, I have all the PS+ releases but I've played many of those games on PC and/or on my PS3, the fabled last of us... I already played that one on the PS3 and maybe in the future I'll give the remaster a spin but currently I better spend my money on games I haven't played and that is one story I have already experienced, I'm not much into racing games but with all the driveclub fiasco I stood away of that mess, for a racing fix I'll wait for project cars (that I'll get on PC) and the next Gran Turismo, so as you can see, my PS4 is also collecting dust awaiting for some sweet exclusives, I'm sure those will come but I'm still waiting.

Sony undercut M$ $100 from the start. Now, M$ is undercutting Sony by $50.

Now, Sony has no money & can't cut staff the way they did not too long ago, just to try & get from "Junk Status" stock rating.

Sony also has Drive Club & LBP3 for the holiday season; terrible. Meanwhile, M$ is loaded with exclusives: Forza Horizon 2, Sunset Overdrive, Project Spark, & Halo Master Chief Collection.

And more importantly XBOX Live! And, it works!

So yeah, M$ I profitable, investing heavily in: Halo, 4 games & 3 movies; Gears new studio & new Talent, Fable, Forza, & console functionality.

M$ is in a very strong position.

SonyAddict3467d ago

So basically everything that was out last gen?.

KingPin3467d ago (Edited 3467d ago )

dont know if you got the memo...

on n4g if you aint first...you last and your console of choice is doomed to fail even though there are millions who own it worldwide and have plenty of games scheduled for release.

Joey_Leone3467d ago (Edited 3467d ago )

LOL as i stated many times before, the damage has been done, Microsoft lowered the price from $500 to 350 and it hasn't been out for a year, that just goes to show that the XBOX brand is dying because of it's false attempt to scam the consumer, we gave Microsoft a chance in this gaming industry with the Original Xbox (which didn't sell so well but it was still great) and XBOX360 was great until the end when you finally got what you REALLY wanted which was money and control, it still amazes me how people are giving you a second chance after the blatant attempt to screw your consumers (even the loyal fans).

Azzanation3467d ago (Edited 3467d ago )

@Neonridr

Quote
*I don't want to rain on anyone's parade here, but technically they are in third...*

Technically Wii won last gen too.

otherZinc3467d ago (Edited 3467d ago )

@Neonridr,

"Technically" XBOX ONE is #1 as they're the most profitable & stable of the 3 and the PS4 is in 3rd.

Sonys Games Division severely cut staff in every gaming department from Naughty Dog, Guerilla Games, to the overrated LBP Team, the front office with Jack Tretton and secretaries.

Look at Sonys holiday lineup for the last 2 holiday seasons:Last year Knack & Killzone- this year: Drive Club & LBP3. Terrible!

See, Sony has you PS4 fans fooled. Moodys and Standard & Poors isn't, "downgrading" Sony to "Junk Status" & keeping them there.

Meanwhile, M$ has made money off the XBOX ONE from day 1.

See, when you're winning you can invest in franchises like Halo, Quantum Break, TitanFall, Gears, Forza, Fable, Minecraft, 3 Halo Films & more...without cutting staff to do so. In fact, M$ hired more staff.

The XBOX ONE is in perfect position. When you're profitable, you invest as M$ is doing.

Veneno3466d ago

Then why does MS have to keep cutting the price of the Xbone? Because their position is so perfect that its no biggie to lose out on 150 per console? Or maybe they are a little desperate perhaps?

r1sh123467d ago

OT: like with every "competition" one has to be first and unfortunately one has to be third, last gen it was sony they adjusted and now seeing the success of the changes they made. MS unfortunately read the market wrong and have to learn and adjust accordingly

Neonridr3467d ago

I will totally agree that playing from behind can be advantageous for sure. Just hopefully not "too" far behind.. ;)

Hellsvacancy3467d ago (Edited 3467d ago )

"last gen it was sony" nope, that place was for MS, MS had a GOOD start last gen but didn't capitalise on it, the PS3 soon caught up leaving MS in third, again

SpiralTear3467d ago

This is my opinion, but I think it was Sony's desire to shape up and improve that pushed them to first place last gen, and not really Microsoft not capitalizing on their early lead. Sony did more than Microsoft to create that situation.

Palitera3467d ago

Both factors lead to Sony 1st, MS 2nd or 3rd.

Until the end of the gen, Sony threw awesome exclusives on top of others, while MS abandoned X360 and let only franchises titles to be released exclusively. Even these ones they screwed up completely stopping them in time, like Gears, Forza and Halo.

The bad part is that now Sony are the lazy ones. Took them one full year to add pause/resume to downloads and, ffs, 4 minutes for a message to appear?

I just hope they improve their evolution and don't get wrecked by MS much more dynamic improvements.

They are not posting anti Microsoft article. Quite the opposite. They are taking the fact that Microsoft is behind and trying to say it's a positive.

solidjun53467d ago

Sorry, but this is from Kuchera. The same Kuchera who railed against anyone who criticized Microsoft's DRM policies. Also, let's not kid ourselves here. This polygon. They have a rep.

So completely ignoring the fact that the Wii U is in this "competition" as well?

Going by the numbers so far, PS4 is in 1st, Wii U 2nd and X1 third. So X1 is "losing" to both Wii U and PS4.

Anyway all consoles are selling and delivering fun experiences for their fans (Not all, but most) that's all that matters.

lifeisgamesok3467d ago

Most don't consider the Wii U to be current gen

Eonjay3467d ago

I get that but it is intrinsically false. For example, the Xbox OG and GameCube were both more powerful than the PS2, but people still recognized their existence.

Foraoise3467d ago

"Most don't consider the Wii U to be current gen" - which is stupid because generation means, based on TIME. Not "HARDWARE".

I can't believe some people don't know what "generation" means, haha. Wii U is current gen.

Deividas3467d ago

@Eonjay

Man, I loved the GameCube.

BluFish3467d ago

And those people would be incorrect. It's the latest Nintendo console, so it's the "current generation" Nintendo console.

You can argue it doesn't have the "next-gen" feel, but console generations are not dictated by their graphics.

TheWatercooler3467d ago

What you mean is you don't consider wii U to be current gen. Because if you did then that means your precious Xbone is in last place

Tito083467d ago

@Eonjay-You can't compare the PS2 situation with that of the Wii U, Gamecube and PS2 had same gen specs despite the Gamecube being a tad more powerful, but the truth is there was nothing on Gamecube that couldn't be done on PS2 on a technical stand-point, while the XBox on the other hand was a more ,overall powerful machine, while it had games where obviously PS2 might not handle properly, it shared most multiplats, Wii U isn't that differentf from PS3/360, and you know it, smh.

Tito083467d ago (Edited 3467d ago )

Btw, you'll always see people talking about Sony vs Microsoft with Nintendo always being out of the picture since the Gamecube days, it isn't actually nothing new to be honest.

Angeljuice3467d ago

"Most don't consider the Wii U to be current gen"

For the sake of those who take offence to this, It can be easily altered whilst remaining both truthful and accurate:

Most don't consider the Wii U *PERIOD*

I'm not being antagonistic, just saying how it is. All my friends are gamers to some extent and I have never even heard WiiU being raised in a conversation outside of the internet.

I know its only anecdotal evidence, but I've been gaming long enough to have seen every console launch in history and I have never known a console to be so anonymous in the minds of the general public.

Bronxs153467d ago

Actuall it's the other way around. There are things more things on wii u that can't be done on ps4. Wii u can run ps4 games. Just downgrade the graphical effects and make it 720 in most instances. But how can u make aim intuitive level designer like in smash using the gamepad and stylus in ps4? Ur finger on the touchpad?

YodaCracker3467d ago

Let's be honest here. The real battle is between the Xbox One and PS4. The XB1 has been outselling the Wii U for a long time now, anywhere from 2:1 to 4:1 in weekly sales. The Wii U is only ahead because of its earlier launch, and it will be in third by the end of the year. If it were CURRENTLY selling anywhere close to XB1 numbers (which are already far below PS4 numbers), then it would enter the discussion. But it's not. Recent numbers have had even the PS3 selling more weekly than the Wii U.

ape0073467d ago

wiiu has must have games, it's a must buy along with ps4, X1 or a PC......sorry

Picnic3467d ago (Edited 3467d ago )

The WiiU should have been last gen instead of the Wii.

The WiiU is the proper successor to the Gamecube. The Wii was a Gamecube version 1.5 at best. I think that , from a design standpoint, it was worse than the Gamecube. Many people still use the Gamecube controller instead of the Wii controllers.

The original Wii's games weren't even as technically great as the original Xbox in some respects.
In fact, because of the amount of shovelware, many Wii games looked worse than the best Gamecube games.

The WiiU is the right system 5 years late. Nintendo went for the easy money with the Wii- the utterly die hard Nintendo fans and non-gamers. Now they're dependent on the young and a few of the nostalgic. I suppose that their novelty to the young and the rich enough to afford 2 consoles will long work in their favour in tiding them over.

Malacath3467d ago

The Wii U is a generation behind. It's not in the same class as the ps4 or xbox one.

It's not much more powerful than the xbox 360 or ps3.

It also isn't selling well in the countries that matter. My mate works in Asda and they only ever managed to sell one Wii U in his store. The ps4 and X1 on the other hand are flying off the shelves.

Theyellowflash303467d ago

Asda.... in the UK? LOL that regions console sales are not even that high.

And what you said doesn't prove anything. Counties that matter? Get off your high horse dude.

Nintendo has sold 2 million Wii U's in Japan and you're telling me that does't matter? LOL, then why did MS launch there then?

Nobody is buying Xbox One's in Japan at all.

Malacath3466d ago

@Theyellowfish30

You clearly don't know anything about the UK if you think consoles sales are not that high.

And no japan doesn't matter any more when it comes to console games.

For a start the japanese are more into mobile games than console games now. And they also tend not to like western games. Both ps4 and xbox even more so are dominated by western games which don't do well in Japan. Even the ps4 hasn't sold as well there are previous generations. But Nintendo is mostly Japanese games which is why that console has done well there.

While the Japanese prefer Japanese games, I prefer western games which is why the countries that matter to me are the countries that make western games. They are dominated by playstation and xbox. 1st and 2nd place.

Theyellowflash303465d ago

And you don't know anything about the UK's sales, because the console sales in that region alone are not that high.

PLEASE show me proof that console sales in the UK are so much higher, or more significant that other regions.

The UK is a small slice of Europe dude.

Once again, get off your high horse dude. All gamers in the UK by is Call of Duty and GTA

SilentNegotiator3467d ago (Edited 3467d ago )

Xbone is still outpacing Wii U, though; only about 2 million behind Wii U with an entire year disadvantage. As far as pacing is concerned, Xbone is in 2nd and will be 2nd in raw numbers by next year if that pace keeps up.

MSBAUSTX3467d ago (Edited 3467d ago )

Your theory is flawed. It is based on the idea that the Wii U will not continue its rolling success it started with Mario Kart 8. It will continue to sell even more now that Bayo 2 is a down right hit critically and clearly next gen and Smash U comes out right in time for Holidays with inevitable bundles for the holidays.

It will be the most affordable system as well with a ton of kid friendly games out finally so all the kids who have Wiis will want the Wii U. Your theory of XB1 being second or beating it by next year only works if Nintendo releases nothing starting right now. That simply isnt happening which means your theory is simply wrong.

BVFTW3467d ago

MSBAUSTX your theory is flawed:

*MK8 hasn't performed as its predecessor, not even close.
*Bayonetta 2 although a really high scored, critically acclaimed game, this doesn't guarantee record breaking sales as Japan's 3 weeks sales decline (2 week: 7.7k, 3 week: 3.6K, 4 week: 2.1K) has shown.
*Smash is my personal candidate for GOTY but historically, smash has never sold more copies than Mario Kart.
*The Wii kids aren't kids anymore.
*Wii U lack of third party support is a huge bump in the road.

The Wii U has some of the best game this gen and Nintendo will profit from the system but it will fall behind in sales against its 2 competitors.

PS: I love my Wii U, I'm 1 of the 7 million souls supporting it but this doesn't take away my objectivity.

Theyellowflash303458d ago

@BVFTW

Your statements are flawed

- Basing Bayonetta 2's sales only on Japan? Platinum games titles always sell better in the West.

- Many console games in Japan don't sell well.

- Historically Smash has never sold more than Kart? Not true actually.

Smash on Gamecube outsold Mario Kart. Not to mention, Smash Bros has the Amiibo hype and holiday marketing behind it. Smash Bros could easily sell more than Mario Kart 8.

You have no idea if the Wii U will "fall behind in sales against its 2 competitors" Its far to early to tell.

Next year has Zelda Wii U, Star Fox, Xenoblade, Splatoon, Devil's Third and many other games. There could be a cheaper model or price drop as well. Anything could happen.

ape0073467d ago (Edited 3467d ago )

Spotie3467d ago

Even so, foehammer, note the number of games you listed, as opposed to how many noctis listed. You may also be able to find them on PC, but there are FAR more games you can't play on XB1 than games you can't play on PS4.

MSBAUSTX3467d ago (Edited 3467d ago )

@ spotie

Thats because those other games run on Windows. Which is made by whom? Uh MS. They get money either way. It is brilliant. Sony just wished they could double dip the way MS does. Instead they release PS TV, the Vita's retarded cousin, that can do nothing as good as the vita can and the vita barely does anything good because Sony doesnt allow it too.

Either way you look at it, MS is making money through PC and XB1. It is smart business. This has nothing to do with how good the PS4 or Vita hardware is. It has to do with quality of content. They both bring what people want to the table.

MS has great exclusives and so does Sony but dont Write off Microsofts exclusives as not being so just because they are on PC as well. because if they run on Microsoft Windows then it is still a Microsoft exclusive. It will remain that way until Sony figures out how to make an operating system for PCs.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

CrimsonWing691h ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker58m ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo48m ago(Edited 47m ago)

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing6938m ago(Edited 37m ago)

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

6 Fun Games Where You Actually Play As The Bad Guy

While the mainstream media always sees things turning in favor of the hero, here are 6 games that own being a bad guy.

Profchaos6h ago

Pretty much all of these games listed are based around a morality system you don't have to be bad and you don't have to be good.

It seems to have left out some real amazing games like red dead redemption 1/2,ass effect and true crime la/ny

Tacoboto6h ago

Armored Core VI?

Ok, I'm really missing something here. Just beat chapter 3 earlier this evening, unlocked A-rank Arena fights. I'm not seeing or sensing any branching paths or morality system and I've done every side mission and arena fight available to me up to that fight.

Is something big coming soon to branch the story?

banger885h ago

No mention of Grand Theft Auto? Saints Row (original trilogy), Manhunt? Also The Suffering (depending on the ending you get).
