Xbox One fans should be ecstatic their console is "losing" to Sony's PlayStation 4

Ben Kuchera: Competition is great, and Microsoft being in second place this generation may be the best thing to happen to Xbox fans in some time. Microsoft will become more aggressive in pricing, in features and in signing exclusives.

Microsoft can't coast on past successes, which means it has to work twice as hard to find new ones. That's something that should excite everyone with an Xbox One, or who is thinking of buying one.

Second or third, it doesn't matter. It just ensures what I've said for a long time. This is the position MS deserve to be in, on the ropes, back behind the wall with no choice but to deliver what the gamers want.

These companies always need reminding about where their prorities should lie, and we did that last year and continue to do that now.

I strongly believe that this will be one of the best generations of gaming (minus some annoying practices that have become commonplace). Many of the gimmicks have now been filtered out (motion controls, casual gaming focus etc) and gaming is squarely at the forefront of it all.

So yeah, X1 fans should be ecstatic that the company is 'losing' to the PS4. It's MS' money, let them spend as much as possible in a desperate bid to make us happy :)

If this system would have been number 1, doing Sony numbers this system would not look the way it does now and all that anti consumer crap that Microsoft wanted to do would be in place and they would be shafting consumers. I don't think we want any company to be loosing money. Let's face it, as business owner myself, the going is though and your employees depend on you to provide them a living.

However, I think MS has never been in a better position. Every console sold isn't a loss leader, and it is just profit or break-even on each console sold, and profit on everything else.

But yeah, this is most definitely a good thing for Xbox gamers as we witnessed how MS is leapfrogging their competitors on almost all levels.

The Bad:
Also Microsoft has always been aggressive its just a matter of in which direction like with all the Kinect focus games which although I love Kinect and want more implementation in core games the full Kinect games focus is one of their biggest errors.

The Good:
The good aggressive online strategy has always been there, the 3rd party aggressive deals has always been there, and the aggressive marketing has been there, all this is good. They've said LONG before X1 was announced they were getting back to their roots and investing heavily in CORE GAMES(I remember when they talked of billions invested in core games, many here called them liars, saying all the exclusives would be Kinect kiddie games) so that and everything they are doing now looks that way but that's before they were losing so I'll give 'em a lil credit for knowing they slacked off with Kinect based games, not anything to do with ps4 in that regard. If anything whats really refreshing is that I like their new willingness to listen to feedback and make swift changes, so overall I do think like any company that wants to "beat the competition" Yes being behind makes you try harder but in general I think micro is mostly benefitting from lessons learned off of 2 previous generations of consoles more than anything else.

Couldn't agree more, for too long now Microsoft have been too focused on kinect and the Wii crowd and it's about time it came back to bite them. If Microsoft stays committed to making Xbox a success again, it can only be a good thing for X1 owners and gamers in general. In the first few years of the 360's lifespan, there was so many great games, if they try and replicate that with the X1, it's going to be a great time to be an X1 owner.

Xbox one is a compelling system. The $350 price drop i suspect is here to stay. This is where i always felt microsoft should be spending their money. Creating additional value for gamers instead of buying up exclusives and creating an uproar for games that won't deliver until PS4 has ballooned its lead to the point where the xbox becomes irrelevant.

Microsoft needs to act now and aggressivley and the price drop is the quickest action that can take to reap immediate benefits. Buying new exclusives will take 2+ yrs to materialize while ps4 could continue could to run away with first place

Sony deserve to be in first place because of the generosity of the PS3's free online (I know it's not free any more) and the power of the PS4.

That said, the power of the PS4 does not equal
'ALL the best exclusives'.

But when Sony isn't giving over a year lead any more, when the PS4 has some of the best exclusives, mostly all of the best versions of the many third party games and a market that doesn't care much about motion control, the Xbox One becomes the cult, niche, sell in comparison. Regardless of some special exclusives on Xbox One and regardless of whether its exclusives like this are sometimes funkier, it might have to be happy selling half what the PS4 does. I do think that Insomniac made a good long term move by going Xbox One exclusive though- best chance to grow this franchise away from Infamous, which would have felt its toes stepped on, and away from Naughty Dog on PS4. Sony simply wouldn't have wanted it enough - or wanted to promote it enough- in comparison to Microsoft. Microsoft will be very pleased to have this game. It can pull in young gamers and old school gamers alike. It's like it was meant for the Xbox One- it's like back to the original Xbox days with Jet Set Radio Future, only pumped up with even more energy and actual danger. And Phil Spencer is the ideal person to have in charge at Microsoft when launching a game.

I wouldn't say casual gaming focus has been filtered out. It's actually on the rise, with the increase in independent publishing, and won't be going anywhere anytime soon. Look at Steam for example. There are in dire need of getting the ammount of shovelware under control. Which is what they are trying to do with recent additions of tags, curated lists. Hopefully the new consoles will find a way around that after a couple years.

This argument doesn't make much sense to me.

If they were to be in a situation where they were winning, it would have been because they had a better console than they do now, with better games / services, cheaper pricepoint, etc. So it's only 'better' to be losing if we're comparing it to the hypothetical alternative where they would be winning while offering the same, or less of a service to consumers than they are now.

It's akin to saying "I'm glad my computers faulty, because now it has plentiful room for improvement". It doesn't change the fact that you would have been better off, with a better computer to begin with. It's just positives spin.

If we reflect on generations prior, little good has come from 'losing'. In particular despite strong first party support and incentives, the consoles have still suffered at the hand of third party publishers (third rate ports (Wii U) and a lack of support (Wii U, XBOX Original).

While this is a positive way of looking at a bad situation, it would have be better if the console was in first place, because it would have meant Microsoft had shipped a better console to begin with.

Well said. It's the reason Sony was in 3rd place for so long last generation, and why they are doing so well now. They listened, and continue to listen to their fans. Now that they know what it's like to be in last, they don't want to fall there again. Here's hoping they don't get complacent in the future.

MS has done an admirable job with the Xbone since it was initially launched. They continue to add software updates frequently, and have already had a few decent looking exclusives. If they keep it up they will do much better than they have.

I think that MS needs this to happen because they are still too high on the success of the 360.
Seriously think about what the xbox one would be if it was COMPLETELY successful from start to finish:

1.) No used games
2.) No single player without internet
3.) $500
4.) Integrated TV capability that hinders the CPU resources
5.) Maybe even higher XBL sub now with all these integrated features (which I think was their original goal)
...and quite a few others to add that I can't think of right now but my point is (feel free to add any if need be) that the competition is killing it right now and without that competition....without CHOICE, the xbox would be a nightmare. Hold off a little longer and I bet you the deal will get even sweeter. Seriously, who wants all that extra stuff at the compromise of your gaming console? I understand if it was an add on, but nothing like that should be mandatory, it just creates excuses for bigger companies to charge more for thin air. Get back on the games MS...

Sold the PS4 because I didn't use it and found the online play to be inferior. I bought it again a couple months later because I wanted to like it and hoped they'd improved it. Nope. Sold that one too. My XB1 gets lots of use, runs great and has no issues. People that don't check it out or are "angry" at Microsoft are just foolish in my opinion. Honestly, who cares. The point of the story (to which I agree) is that xbox one has become one of the most consumer centric consoles ever and has a great influx of amazing games. Had they had a huge sale lead, the outcome may have just been a bit different. Motivation to push their console sales has been nothing but a great thing.

I'd like to disagree, the cornered animal is Nintendo whose pulling the weigth of the low adoption rate of the Wii U with releasing exclusive after exclusive of varied games "full of content", I look at super smash in awe at the sheer amount of content it has, but I agree that the xbone is putting a hell of a fight as well. I have all current platforms but the xbone and its really making me think on a future purchase, that catalogue in the making seems as good as its competitors, maybe this will be a new golden age for gaming, being a platform agnostic will pay off for sure!

Hey #memots why so serious? the guy is talking about his experience, I have a PS4 too but I've only enjoyed Infamous Second Son so far, I'm planning on getting first light but besides this and Resogun I have nothing else to play, I have all the PS+ releases but I've played many of those games on PC and/or on my PS3, the fabled last of us... I already played that one on the PS3 and maybe in the future I'll give the remaster a spin but currently I better spend my money on games I haven't played and that is one story I have already experienced, I'm not much into racing games but with all the driveclub fiasco I stood away of that mess, for a racing fix I'll wait for project cars (that I'll get on PC) and the next Gran Turismo, so as you can see, my PS4 is also collecting dust awaiting for some sweet exclusives, I'm sure those will come but I'm still waiting.

LOL as i stated many times before, the damage has been done, Microsoft lowered the price from $500 to 350 and it hasn't been out for a year, that just goes to show that the XBOX brand is dying because of it's false attempt to scam the consumer, we gave Microsoft a chance in this gaming industry with the Original Xbox (which didn't sell so well but it was still great) and XBOX360 was great until the end when you finally got what you REALLY wanted which was money and control, it still amazes me how people are giving you a second chance after the blatant attempt to screw your consumers (even the loyal fans).

This is my opinion, but I think it was Sony's desire to shape up and improve that pushed them to first place last gen, and not really Microsoft not capitalizing on their early lead. Sony did more than Microsoft to create that situation.

Both factors lead to Sony 1st, MS 2nd or 3rd.

Until the end of the gen, Sony threw awesome exclusives on top of others, while MS abandoned X360 and let only franchises titles to be released exclusively. Even these ones they screwed up completely stopping them in time, like Gears, Forza and Halo.

The bad part is that now Sony are the lazy ones. Took them one full year to add pause/resume to downloads and, ffs, 4 minutes for a message to appear?

I just hope they improve their evolution and don't get wrecked by MS much more dynamic improvements.

Let's be honest here. The real battle is between the Xbox One and PS4. The XB1 has been outselling the Wii U for a long time now, anywhere from 2:1 to 4:1 in weekly sales. The Wii U is only ahead because of its earlier launch, and it will be in third by the end of the year. If it were CURRENTLY selling anywhere close to XB1 numbers (which are already far below PS4 numbers), then it would enter the discussion. But it's not. The WiiU is the proper successor to the Gamecube. The Wii was a Gamecube version 1.5 at best. I think that , from a design standpoint, it was worse than the Gamecube. Many people still use the Gamecube controller instead of the Wii controllers.

The original Wii's games weren't even as technically great as the original Xbox in some respects.
In fact, because of the amount of shovelware, many Wii games looked worse than the best Gamecube games.

The WiiU is the right system 5 years late. Nintendo went for the easy money with the Wii- the utterly die hard Nintendo fans and non-gamers. For a start the japanese are more into mobile games than console games now. And they also tend not to like western games. I am a big Xbox fan, I Like Sony as well, but I prefer Xbox. I am happy they are in this position. Microsoft was in the lead most of all last generation and for whatever reason stopped giving the Xbox 360 new ips.

This is a perfect wake up call for Microsoft that they can not just coast to victory this generation, and they need to bring great exclusives and content for the Xbox One. The PS4 is outselling the Xbone from the start each month the gab is widening, have almost double the amount of games
but somehow that is not a bad thing rather it is a great thing because MS (somehow according to the same people that said it all about sales and exclusives did not matter last gen) will release more (timed) exclusives and suddenly only talk exclusives and sales does not matter.

The bad thing (from a business perspective) for Sony last gen was that they dropped from 80% marketshare to 30% marketshare. MICROSOFT climbed from 10% of the market to 30%, and Nintendo went from 10% to 60%.

When it came to software sales, Microsoft faired the best of the 3.

So it's not all about unit totals. Sony "lost" because they fell from their perch in dramatic fashion while the other to improved on their marketshare.

This time around, MS is on pace to exceed last gens unit sales and marketshare, but so will Sony (who will probably get 60% or better). For MS' business, surely they want much better. But this author is talking about how MS' struggles will make things better for the consumer.

If Sony did confirm another 2.1 billion dollar loss then that is mostly from production of movies, music, TV shows and R and D for multimedia hardware, semiconductors, it's finance and life insurance start up, buying other companies and also production of Sony games like Everquest which has a big budget but all these products have been billed out on this fiscal year but will not release and or see profits until next fiscal year or even further out.

Sony is more than just Playstation Tvs Movies Music and PC brand. They are becoming very diverse as they add finance and energy to their multimedia and entertainment divisions.

They also did $99 billion dollars in revenue in 2014 so the money is flowing for Sony it's just that they are investing in their future growth so therefore they are spending more than they are saving right now but these investments will kick in turn a profit and secure a long future.

I don't see Sony going bankrupt in 2015 or anytime soon unless people just stop watching TV and movies as they have too many assets that keep money coming in but Sony needs to trim the fat and cut operation cost which they are doing and hopefully their new Investments prove profitable and stable as they diversify the company.

A company that can post yearly loses for a decade while investing in its future is dicey but shows piles of cash in reserves and a solid cash flow from products consumers trust. I don't know about that analysis ATi. I'm not sure how old you are so you may not remember this but Sony used to be the #1 consumer electronics manufacturer by a landslide. If you wanted the best TV you got a Sony...period. Any personal music device that was not a Sony was just considered a cheap knockoff of a Sony Walkman. What the iPhone is now is what Sony was for TV and music electronics. But in the 90s, they became more diversified and perhaps lost focus. Their quality went down at the same time that the competition's got better. They'd be wise to sell off some of their divisions and refocus on what made them great.

To be honest Sony exclusives have not been all that great basically being all graphics all 1080p but boring last gen game play and the top game on ps4 is TLOU a ps3 remake.

We are still talking about Ryse but no one is talking about Kzsf infamous SS or even Planetside 2. On Ps4 it's all TLOU multiplats and hype for UC4. Sorry folks but the order 1866 is all graphics and boring game play from what I've seen

Meanwhile I want to play Quantum Break MCC Halo TV looks good to watch and it seems Sunset Overdrive is legit although not my cup of tea. True MCC is just HD remake but come on 4 games plus a TV show is value

Sure Sony has sold way more ps4 while the lesser powered xb1 struggle at launch but MS sure does have better exclusives right now including the timed exclusive tomb raider which was a bold move because tomb raider became famous through the playstation.

Now the big guns as in Uncharted 4 Gran Turismo and GOW will face off against Gears Fable and of course Halo.

Those franchises will carry each console forward and no matter the sales figures of consoles sold the winner will be the one with the best exclusive.

Right now it's too early to say who's winning or losing because actually Sony has been average as they just brainwash gamers into thinking 1080p is all a next gen game has to be and MS has made some small strides with its exclusive content but neither console has wowed me.

Holds $400 in hand looks at both consoles, nah I rather buy DDR4 ram.

Heck if Nintendo got off its duff and pumped out a true wiiu worthy Super Mario and then released Zelda followed by a new and more aggressive Metroid they could really dominate but having no third party support and only minimal effort games Nintendo seems to be just coasting this one out ala Game cube.

No losers but I know who is quietly winning..... Pc Gaming. Frigging more day 1 multiplats xb1 games and ps4 games than ever. So many many xb1 and ps4 console exclusives are on Pc plus day one multiplats and don't even get me started on Pc Exclusives.

So I say stop counting consoles sold and pay more attention to game innovation because most of these games are just HD versions of x360 and ps3 games with no next gen game play.

BF4 TW3 AC:UNITY an Project Cars are so far the only next gen games coming but all are on Pc too. OK Quantum Break gets added too as that seems to have some unique game play.

When the PS3 was getting killed by Microsoft Sony stepped up their game and made the PS3 a must have. So yeah, same thing applies here. It's good for everyone that Microsoft is having to play catchup. When they pull ahead Sony will have to do something amazing and so on and so forth. That's why competition is good for the industry.

I own all three of this gens consoles and the X1 is my favorite so far, so MS just needs to keep doing what they are doing, and I will continue to be happy with the console. Whatever place they are in matters not to me. I rate consoles on how much I use them and so far it aint even close, Xbox for the win in my world. Xbox 360 failure rates has dick to do with this gen, as I recall, I had to replace my PS3 several times because of the yellow ring of death, not to mention the breach on my credit info, and continuing to hate on MS for what they did not do is ridiculous as far as I am concerned. MS just needs to stay the course, haters going to hate regardless, they have the most games, services, apps I am using this holiday, so I am totally happy with them. Competition is good for all gamers especially us multiconsolers..

Really? I don't think Sony has been doing any such thing, in fact they have been remarkably quiet and not said much about anything for a while now.
The frenzy over resolution was born when Sony fans saw a distinct advantage over Microsoft in that area and jumped on the bandwagon.
Last gen the forums were full of PC trolls mocking the PS360 users for not having 1080p as standard, I think that console gamers took for granted that the new consoles would support 1080p and were surprised when so many (mostly Xbox) games failed to do so. Of course Sony fanboys couldn't resist putting the boot in whilst the opposition was down hence the fuss that was made.

The reason I prefer to game on consoles is that the ecosystem is so much better than on PC. If PC gaming had a champion, someone who could fight for the gamers to get the best experience possible on the format (like Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo can) then PC gaming would be the way forward, but they don't and just end up with crappy ports.
PC gamers also never want to pay full price for games which is another reason they are at the bottom of the list of many developers priorities.
Nothing is ever fully optimised on PC either because there are so many variables in play so you have to over-engineer a gaming PC and never get anywhere near 100% of its potential (that always frustrates me).

So yes, my PC may have slightly better graphics than my PS4 on certain titles, but I never have to stop playing my PS4 to find out why its running slow today, or search for malware, or remove a virus, or install a new driver, or roll back to an older driver because of compatibility issues, or run registry mechanic etc.

My PS4 wants to play games, its what it was born to do and it relishes the prospect. My PC on the other hand tries to fight me every step of the way and puts obstacle after obstacle in front of my game playing. That is why I game on consoles.

I used to feel the way you did. Until I started seeing the freedom I actually had on PC. Then the real gamer seemed to spring out of me. Sure PC gaming isn't instant gaming it takes a few tweaks and a few step by steps but all in all you are not limited. The graphical prowess of the PC is much bigger than you think. Not to mention you can do a lot more on a PC. I look at it like the guy who works on his own car. Who saves a lot of money by learning how to fix his own machine. Once you learn it you realize of wow that was easy and never forget. Its only complicated if you aren't willing to spend a few minutes or hours here and there.

Reading a lot of these comments is some of the most misinformed fanboy reach aroudness I have ever read on N4g. In recent date. Some of you guys need to seriously get some therapy. These are not clubs we belong too. They are consumer purchases. That means you got the money to buy one you can play games on it. When I hear people spin love stories about Sony being so kind to the consumer. It just blows me away. Not that I haven't seen a few MS fans do the same but christ sake guys. These are not prestigious clubs. They are devices we bought from companies designed to take our money. If you have the money you can belong to the club. Plain and simple.

Recently I have been considering picking up an XBone. After sending my 4th Dualshock 4 controller back for replacement again. Then picking up an XBone controller for my PC, I'm not keen on the position of the L1 R1 shoulder buttons but it doesn't half feel a higher quality build by a long distance.

I'm also fed up of PSN network speeds. I don't want to pay for LIVE Gold though as there's not enough value there & I wouldn't pick one up until a slim model gets released. I have to admit though I've sure changed my tone since before Christmas & the whole Kinect/privacy issue or maybe it's just me getting fed up with Sony!

This happened to Sony last gen, and it's good and bad. It's good because Microsoft can't take for granted anything, and will fight more for the gamer. The bad part is that the PS4 for the foreseeable future will be the lead platform. It also stinks that the PS4 will always have pricing leverage this gen. Sony are amazing at refining hardware and reducing costs, so any price drop Microsoft will throw at them that gains any momentum will be met by a PS4 price drop. Despite some bad releases like Driveclub, they still are selling like crazy and in the drivers seat.

M$ has come a long way since that clusterf**k they called a launch.

Since then they've been doing alright- Sunset overdrive has had positive feedback, so has FH2. Then there's the master chief collection, Halo Guardians, Quantum break, and hopefully some Rare titles that are long overdue for a comeback.

But Sony has plenty of exclusives up their sleeves as well, so M$ needs to step up.

X1 is inferior to ps4 that is known, it can only rise with good games but MS is either blind or i don't know what to say anymore, anyway i saw yesterday on twitch the preview of the X1 upcoming exclusive named Sunset Overdrive and i must say MS is wasting time releasing those kind of games, that game is a mindless mess i don't even have the slightest idea on how the reviewers gave a 9 to that or they were paid, don't get me wrong but that game is for kids that don't care for story or solid gameplay and instead all they want is to jump in all the directions. MS is losing it on game side with X1.
