PS4 price drop: Is it coming soon and how much?

GotGame writes: Will Sony drop the price of the PS4 this year and how much cheaper will it be? The answer is tricky.

Abash3465d ago

The PS4 will not be dropping in price for a long time. As long as Sony is in the lead (and they are in the distant lead) they have absolutely no reason to make the PS4 even cheaper. It's selling too well to even speculate if there'll be a pricedrop in the near future, there wont be

Ezz20133465d ago

Yeah, Agreed
Sony will not drop the price any time soon
there is no reason whatsoever

If they do this though
it would be a bloodbath
and pretty much kill any hope left the competition has.

GordonKnight3465d ago

Sony is not dropping the price. IMO I think they should've launched with $500 price point. I would've paid it!!!

CARROT1809943465d ago

i think we will get a 1tb version at the same price and discontinue the 500gb model before we see a real price drop

HaveSumNuts3465d ago (Edited 3465d ago )

$350 for the 500gb and $400 for the 1tb version I'm guessing, only because I came across an article a while back on N4G that Sony managed to decrease the cost to produce PS4's.

http://n4g.com/news/1559229...

TomShoe3465d ago (Edited 3465d ago )

No chance. If anything, they'll probably either offer a larger hard drive, or bundle it with 1st party software.

Fizzler3465d ago

@GordonKnight

Nobody is stopping you from donating the extra $100 to Sony, they need every penny they can get at the minute.

mikeslemonade3465d ago (Edited 3465d ago )

Nope no need for a price drop. They already have as much trouble as it is keeping up with demand. Once the holidays roll around it will be harder for them to keep the PS4 in stock.

And if you are waiting for price drop then stop being lame and just buy one. Is $50 really holding you back!?

user55757083465d ago

no price drop but they will probably add more hard drive space and maybe bundle a game

SolidStoner3465d ago

Here in Latvia you can get brand new PS4 369 euro.. some while ago one store sold it for 310 euro, also brand new.. they sold out quick!

I bet in 2016 they will cost 250 euro here!

mp12893465d ago (Edited 3465d ago )

When the xbox one drops its price, sony will think about it.

bouzebbal3464d ago

where i live PS4 already dropped price a few times. i think it's retailers who fix the prices

"PS4 price drop: Is it coming soon and how much?"

It makes no sense for Sony to drop the PS4 price any time soon. PS4 is outselling it's competitors by a large margin.
We will most likely see a X1/WiiU price drop before the PS4's.

DawginTow13465d ago

Agreed. Sony has market share & demand advantage, no business reason to preemptively drop price before MS/Nintendo do... unless Sony wants to be REEAL mean & hog up even more market share XD: take a hit on per-console profits to increase game sale volume, & by extension royalty profits.

They'll just have to crunch their #'s & make their call. Course, as a consumer, I know what I'd want: Drop The Price! XP

Eonjay3465d ago

I disagree. I think the price will be dropping $50 very soon. The revised hardware seem to effect nothing but cost of production. If I am wrong thats okay, but I will go against the grain and predict a price cut by the end of the year.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen3465d ago

Maybe next summer or fall. This holiday season? Nope.

BiggerBoss3465d ago (Edited 3465d ago )

Id say theyre probably ready to make a price drop, but wont do so until the Xbox one appears to be gaining ground on the Ps4. Because otherwise, what would be the point?

RosweeSon3465d ago

Before Christmas this year I just don't think it's gonna happen, they've got PS3 and vita they can just drop the price on those and sell a few more ps4 is shifting fine at the current price and even with microsofta price cuts its still around the same price as the competition, I think your right tho it'll be a £50/$50 reduction but don't think it'll happen until this time next year myself by which point think of all those free ps+ gsmes that would have built up since then, think itll cover the loss of any minor price cut ;)

nitus103465d ago

I don't really think we are going to see a price drop any-time soon although like many previous responses I think they are going to make up for not having a price drop by bundles and/or a larger disk drive. Possibly 1TB which is not that more expensive than a 500GB disk in OEM quantities.

Personally a 1TB model at the 500GB price would definitely be attractive to me. Throw in backwards compatibility for PS1 (all PS3's will play these) and preferably PS2 software and I will buy immediately.

The problem is I still have many PS3 games I still like and some I have not finished. The current games on the PS4 are not attractive enough for me to consider getting a PS4 just yet.

TheStrokes3465d ago

It all depends where you shop. It's rrp £349.99... but there are plenty stores selling it for less. Depending on where you shop, then it already has dropped.

frostypants3465d ago

It has little to do with the lead. Their goal is to make money. If they felt they could make more money in the long run by cutting the price, they'd do it, regardless of what MS is doing.

Bhuahahaha3465d ago

@haveSumNUts

thats a very good idea ps4 with 1tera for $400 mark

joab7773465d ago

I heard Sony came up with this brilliant idea.

PS4 and Vita bundled for 90 days for $199.

They take an initial hit but sell like 50 million units. Now everyone has one and has no need to buy another, and the consumer base goes through the roof for exclusives etc. 3rd party start investing in Sony b/c of this and the run away train is off.

Vita and PS4 software sales skyrocket. Imagine this happening.

crazysammy3465d ago

Yea I agree as well. What you will see are bundles from Sony. The philosophy they have had for quite a while now is not to discount things, but rather give them more value. So for $400 you will see the PS4 with a 1TB HD (Like Carrot said below) or you will see game bundles for the $400 tag.

Kidmyst3465d ago

I think this Holiday we'll see retailers with deals, maybe not an official Sony price drop but retailers might have good deals. I'm hoping for a black friday deal to get a DS4 color controller cheaper.

XanderZane3464d ago

Sony wouldn't drop the price of the PS4 with it selling so well. Why would they want to LOSE MONEY on a system that is selling like crazy?I can't see them dropping the price until it's time to introduce the PS4 Slim. Microsoft will probably release their XB1 Slim before Sony anyways. Microsoft doesn't need to drop their price either. They already have enough great bundles with free games to get them through the holidays. Also, retailers are dropping the price for M$ anyways. There are already deals coming up for $350 XB1 at KMart and $450 for XB1 Cod:AW bundles at Target & Walmart.

http://www.gamespot.com/art...

We're all set for the holidays.

why would sony drop the price when they just had the 2nd highest (US) sept sales numbers in console history at $399 . you'll see a xb1 price drop long before you see a ps4 price drop , as long as the sony numbers stay good there is no need for them even to respond to what MS does .

Neonridr3465d ago

I would be surprised if they did. It is selling so well, no need to lower the price.

That being said, I am sure we will see a Black Friday or Holiday Bundle that will be sold at a price that will make the actual console be less than if it was sold as a standalone (factoring in the bundled items prices).

Software_Lover3465d ago

Probably won't happen.

1)They are outselling the competition
2)They need the profits

Please do not put Destiny’s monetization into Sony’s first party games. The monetization is what’s driving players away from Destiny.

The new temp boss is the sony cfo bean counter so i can see this being a thing get every penny.

Cacabunga14d ago

PlayStation officially losing it.. fans will never support gaas games

just_looken14d ago

@car

The new boss did a interview in japan he wants to tap into the mobile market like nintendio so he give 0 fucks about gamers/fans

https://www.pushsquare.com/...

Redemption-6414d ago

@Cacabunga
You only speak for you and those who think like you, but most fans will support what they want. Playstation and PC fans are literally supporting Helldivers 2 and that is a gaas. Maybe you wouldn't, but many more would if they like it.

Huey_My_D_Long14d ago

@Redemption-64
Look, Im not making any judgement calls about this guy, but I will say that Helldivers 2 GaaS model is unique to Helldivers, and legit the only other game I can think of thats similiar was the Avengers game except HD2 pass is still better.
The fact that you can earn in game currency in a way that doesnt make you feel like you have to grind forever, as well you being able work on that pass that you bought...on your own time without a time limit...that right there is fucking huge to me, and I can't name any game other than avengers that avoided trapping players with FOMO logic...I think GaaS on HD2 shouldn't be compared to the rest of the industry...it should be copied.

Einhander197214d ago

Cacabunga

Helldivers 2...

Redemption-64

In Europe it's a 60 40 split favoring PC.
In the US its a 60 40 split favoring PS5.

So PlayStation owners supported the game just fine, it's not getting carried by PC or anything like that.

FinalFantasyFanatic14d ago

@just_looken,
I'm perfectly fine with the way Nintendo entered the mobile market, I never touched their mobile games, meanwhile, the console/handheld stayed the way it is. As for being a bean counter, he's probably going to reel in these massive budgets that Sony's studios have had lately, I haven't played Spiderman 2, but I cannot see how they almost tripled the budget for that game.

@Redemption-64,
That's an exception to the rule, I'm expecting a lot of these GAAS games from Sony to fail, to be fair, they only need a few to succeed, but I would have preferred that they put more of their resources into other types of games.

DivineHand12514d ago

True their monetization is driving players away and at the same time, their decision to chop out content and convoluted systems is keeping new players away from the game.

Joe91314d ago

I don't think that will happen based on how things worked out at Naughty Dog now that we know what we do, seems they had the option to fully commit to live service games or stay making single player experences so they gave up on their live service game. We are not sure how things came about with Bend making a live service game but I hope that was not a forced situation. Sony doesnt seem like they are forcing studios to switch up but we will see, Sony's bread and butter is single player games it is how they dominated the console market.

Obscure_Observer14d ago

Yeah, I though Sony learned something from all their failures in the LS segment under Bungie´s disastrous leadership and supervision which led to games been cancelled, studios closed and all the people laid off.

Looks like Bungie still plays a major role in Sony´s LS initiative and Sony is not backtracking on their GaaS plans.

S2Killinit14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Are we forgetting that Destiny is also a highly successful franchise? I feel like that definitely deserves mention here.

Besides, there is no reason why a person cant learn from past experiences.

Joe91313d ago

I agree, people act as if Destiny flopped when it came out lol it took 9 to 10 years for the numbers to fall yet people are still playing it add the success of Helldivers 2 no wonder Sony is going forward down this path.

S2Killinit13d ago

Personally, I see no problem with Sony also having service games as long as they make good ones, and more importantly they deliver the AAA story driven games that they are known for. So yeah, I agree 100% with you.

Christopher14d ago

I mean, this person made some pretty bad decisions at Bungie. I hope they've learned from them because I definitely don't see those type of ideas as good for PlaySation in general.

CrimsonWing6913d ago (Edited 13d ago )

Honestly, what’s to learn from? How to make people happily continuously dump money into a single game over its life-time? Buy season passes continuously for several years with a smile on our faces?

GaaS is a design decision that is everything wrong with this industry. The fact that Helldivers 2 did so well and people defend the monetization because it was $40 and is a fun game, scares the sh*t out of me to see that the door is open and all shift will probably be to replicate that in future games. We already know the ROI for traditional game dev cost isn’t doing it for them.

I thought with Jimbo leaving we’d see a change for the better… I’m not so sure now.

S2Killinit13d ago

Service games are being offered by everyone. Sony cannot afford to only create single player AAA games. No one can. They already said they will be doing both.

Abnor_Mal14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Ps5 gamers in 2023 seemed to play more live service types of games, so regardless to how people feel about them, numbers don’t lie and Sony is going where the money is. I mean look at the excitement around Helldivers2, people are showing that they want live service games.

Christopher14d ago

They play long-time existing live service games like CoD, Fortnite, Apex Legends, Destiny 2, and the like. Mass majority of new live service games are considered failures and aren't moving gamers away from older games.

just_looken14d ago

Yep the huge issue with live service is they need paid players along with a reason to play them.

You forgot mobile market that also taps into that player base as well as the eve online style games there is only a certain amount of krakens/whales blind supporters compared to the amount of live service games we have its not sustainable math wise.

700 restaurants making food for every seat for 1000-3000 eaters just does not work out

Einhander197214d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Christopher

I am not a big live service fan and literally own zero of the games you listed, but that is not true, unless you call games that aren't the top games to be failures.

There are tons of live service games that are profitable.

Games don't have to be the biggest game ever they just need to make more than they cost.

I challenge you to show professionally prepared data that shows that more live service games fail than make enough to keep going.

Because all the data that I have seen shows that live service is less of a gamble than making a big AAA budget game which needs to survive off retail sales.

FinalFantasyFanatic14d ago

I sometimes wonder if we're at saturation point, where it's hard for a new game to join those ranks unless it's particularly exceptional, people only have so much time and money to devote to these types of games.

romulus2314d ago

Correction, they have no issue playing good live service games

shinoff218314d ago

Lol it's not even a quarter of the ps5s sold. Helldivers may have been a hit but let's not say most are enjoying it because truth is most(the real most ) don't care about it.

S2Killinit13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

I play what is fun. If a live service game is good I’ll play it as long as its not a money scheme which Helldivers is not.

And Im a single player gamer.

mastershredder14d ago

How do you kill a franchise that already been killed?
Destiny’s grind, cash-in-on-playbass-cha-Ching, and pop-culture-insertion mainstream-me-too bs totally killed any rep Bungie had. Sony/Bungie, if you are doing this to ward-off players, it’s already working.

Sony May Soon Let You Decide How Much NPCs Talk In Games

Sony has patented to add multiple dialogue modes to let players switch between how many conversations with NPCs they want in the game.

I think they did use some but yeah most usually never happened but at least they thought about it. Sony seeks things like this and other, Nintendo seek different ways of playing going by there different controler designs and console designs.

Sounds like patent trolling they tried the same thing against Nintendo with the same pattern.

Motion and control input traversing over higher and lower frequencies seperate from each other allowing the controller to do both

Patents suck. Most of them are complete garbage.

So to recoup the money Genuine is going to take on Nintendo or Microsoft next. I hate patent lawyers they are some of the worst bottom feeders out there.
