Destiny is suffering from the same problems that plague MMOs

GameZone's Matt Liebl: "I’m a level 28 Titan in Destiny. If I wanted to farm for materials I could probably push it to level 29. If I wanted to continuously run the Vault of Glass raid, I could get the armor required to hit level 30. The question is, why would I want to do that? What’s the incentive to reaching current max level?"

Destiny is not an mmo. Repeat massive multiplayer online. No where in the game do you play with a massive amount of people. Co-op fps is what it is. Journalists need to stop changing the meaning of words.

Riggans423472d ago

Read the article. He says, "Now Destiny isn’t an MMO, but it does have MMO elements." He's just saying it suffers from the same problems MMOs do.

mandf3472d ago

Nowhere in destiny, does it have mmo elements and thus should not be compared as such.

user55757083472d ago

the problem with MMO games

say you get to level 30 and then play for 60 hours. that means that you just played for 60 hours and you're at the exact same spot you were before.

the problem with destiny is that it focuses on co-op however you cant even chat with the people in game unless you invite them to party chat

SixZeroFour3472d ago (Edited 3472d ago )

it doesnt have mmo elements, it has rpg elements...know the difference

the only place in destiny where it comes close to being an mmo is at the tower and even then you cant even talk/text ppl (yet) and there isnt a "massive" amount of players allowed (only 16 at a time i think)

EDIT: let me elaborate, MMO stands for "massive multiplayer online" its any type of game that allows a lot of players to be playing at the same time. currently, most of those types of MMO are RPG, which stands for "role playing game" but MMO's are not limited to that genre. An example of a different type of MMO is MAG whice was a shooter

destiny is trying to be an RPG but not fully committing to the genre and is far from being an MMORPG, it allows you to join up with players for battles (raids and strikes), level up and equip gear and upgrade. where it doesnt fully live up to the MMORPG is that it is limited to 16 at the tower, 16 players in any map (i think) 6 players for raids or crucible, and 3 players for strikes and story.

it is far too limiting to be mmo and barely an rpg

Maxor3471d ago

Being a 2nd rate MMO would be a HUGE improvement for Destiny. Right now as it stands, Destiny is the most contentless and poorly conceived MMO ever.

MarkusMcNugen3471d ago

@SixZeroFour

You are on a gaming news aggregate... we all know what an MMO is. Destiny is a hybrid MMO. That's why it has MMO elements but not a true MMO experience.

"Despite being a persistent world game with MMO elements, both Bungie and Activision have stated that, unlike a typical MMO game, there will be no subscription fee for Destiny."

http://destiny.wikia.com/wi...

Kidmyst3471d ago

I stopped playing Destiny for the same question, what's the purpose? Why level up? What does better gear and guns do for me, It doesn't unlock anything new, I've unlocked all areas. So many other games I could play that progress through a story. Maybe I'll play it a bit before November releases.

The game has been out a while and the word mmo shouldn't even be in the discussion. It has no mmo elements.

To the disagrees name an mmo element.

Reaching rank 30 with no content to get you there is just an incomplete game. Go ahead keep doing the same raid over and over again.

Swiggins and thekhurg

Borderlands had all the same stuff and much much more in the game but it wasn't compared as a mmo. Rpg elements, farming, limited raids don't make it mmo elements. A lot of games have this stuff but their not mmos. The stuff available now limit it from ever reaching a true mmo.

Swiggins3472d ago

You're delusional if you think Destiny has NO MMO elements....

thekhurg3472d ago

It has a lot of MMO elements. Just because it doesn't have high player count zones doesn't change the fact that the entire core gameplay experience revolves around the MMO design.

From daily quests (bounties), to faction reputation, to gear checks (light level), to dungeons (strikes), raids, etc...

Perjoss3472d ago

Hate to break it to you, but in pretty much any mmo once you reach the level limit you just do the same raids over and over too.

Maxor3471d ago

It's like Bungie set out to create a shooter MMO then failed spectacularly, the result is something they settled for, which ended up being Destiny.

starrman19853471d ago

Basically all the end end game content is MMO in style:

Public Events
Daily Quests
Weekly Raids/Strikes
Raid Gear

I'm inclined to think you've never actually played an MMO and are just posting on assumptions, which is fine but at least stress that!

MarkusMcNugen3471d ago (Edited 3471d ago )

Have fun arguing with people who made the Destiny wiki then. Expecially since their material is sourced directly from Bungie and Activision.

Didn't Bungie claim it was an MMO though? Generally speaking leading up to launch, I was under the impression that it was supposed to be an MMO not to mention many of the games fans argued the MMO features when people claimed it wasn't one.

mandf3472d ago

They backed off that claim but gamers clung to it.

JeffGUNZ3472d ago

They stated they backed off the statement because they didn't want the MMO word to attach an idea of a subscription to play.

http://www.totalxbox.com/65...

The link confirms what I said above. They didn't want the traditional MMO words to be attached to this game but the game does have MMO elements.

pompombrum3472d ago

It doesn't change the fact that many people were caught on their original claims of an MMO and many were still calling it one in alpha/beta. It's not really fair for them to advertise it as one initially then try and take it back once they realized it wasn't going to benefit them.

speedforce1313472d ago

Bungie never said it was an MMO and they kept saying it wasn't an MMO however it welcomed any discussion.

@mandf
"Nowhere in destiny, does it have MMO elements"

Really ?

Raids, Dungeons (Strikes), Loot System, emotes (dancing, pointing waving), Tiers of gear (common, legendary, exotic), PvP, Open World, Social Area/town (Tower), Vendors, Special currency (marks), Inspecting Players, Classes and Races... etc. I could go on and on.

Sure sounds a lot like an MMO to me, its a Story Driven FPS, an MMO and a competitive MP all in one package. That's what it is trying to do (as much as possible) but it fails to succeed at any of them. Its a jack of all trades but master of none. Its a fun game but incomplete and I will not be buying a sequel unless there is some drastic changes... will be waiting for review this time.

mandf3472d ago

everything you listed are in other games that aren't remotely classified as an mmo. Diablo, Borderlands, every fps out has some of these elements but none are seen as an mmo. Why does destiny get treated differently? Raids and strikes are very limited and the basic story ends at around level 20. Little bits and peices are the very reason it's not classified as an mmo.

vikingland13472d ago

Agree & well said. But you are waisting your time explaining that to such close minded people.

Oschino19073472d ago

Many of the things you named are RPG elements and everything else is done on a much larger scale in a true MMOFPS/RPG. It's not open world either, how many definitions are we changing here?

By the definition many of you are giving a MMO we might as well rewrite the definition and include dozens of other games that don't consider themselves MMOs.

I have Destiny, I don't think it's MMO or open world. Has things that remind me of those kinds of games but it isn't either by a long shot.

HaydenJameSmith3472d ago (Edited 3472d ago )

@Oschino1907
Yes many of the things are RPG elemnts because most MMOs are RPGMMOs... It is open world but feels very linear, I will give you that but by definition it is technically open world. Not changing definitions at all and yes there is other games that share these elements but none that puts most of them together.

The only thing that is discernible from Destiny to the usual standards of MMOs we've been used to is the Scale, between the story, how many areas are explorable and how many people you can have in said area... that's it. It is unconventional MMO but still is one none the less, that is all.

@Gamer9
Agreed...

gamer93472d ago

Who made mandf the MMO Police? We’ll compare whatever games we want. Also Hayden completely answered your question with several examples and you continue to argue and go back and change your original questions. Get your crap together before posting.

Flamingweazel3472d ago

@MANDF...where are the BORDERLANDS emotes, RAIDS, end game gear, weekly grinding for materials? Not a single shooter on the market has raids, MMo like gameplay, destiny has many MMO aspects. Diabo also has MMO ellements so your arguments make no sense.

Kleptic3471d ago (Edited 3471d ago )

why is everyone fighting about this?

MMO means massively multiplayer online...

RPG means role playing game...

Nearly all "mmo's", at least relative to this discussion, are actually "mmorpg's"...

Diablo has 'mmo' elements?...absolutely none whatsoever...it is an RPG...MMORPG's have absorbed a lot of things directly from that franchise, so for the most part its the other way around... (even though the first MMO was developed in 1991, before Diablo)...

Unless you have huge player numbers, on the fly developer changes to a transitioning and adaptive 'universe', by nature of which is sustained through a subscription service of some sort, etc...you don't have ANY MMO features...

RPG features...destiny has tons of them...but when most say MMO they're talking about whats actually a mash up of two types of genres...the RPG side is what Destiny, and borderlands for that matter, borrowed from...the MMO side is no where to be found...

the mmo part means lots of players...the rpg part means an emphasis on persistence (xp, unlocks/loot, abilities, etc.)...if you say Destiny has mmo stuff because of co-op raids and grinding...then literally almost any modern online game is an 'mmo' also...why not BF4?...it takes hundreds of hours to unlock all equipment and ablities for all classes, and has MORE players at any given time?...so whats the difference?...only that it doesn't have co-op?...so then what about assignments and missions, that do have co-op emphasis?...people are needlessly blending game meanings for no reason...

ThanatosDMC3471d ago

Lol... even Bungie stated that Destiny isnt an MMO. Foolishness.

MarkusMcNugen3471d ago

Does everyone on here not know the definition of the MMO genre? Does MMO literally mean there has to be hundreds or thousands of players interacting with the same world?

Short answer. No.

The most basic definition of an MMO is a persistent game world shared by multiple interactive players.

If we are going to put an artificial limit on the number of players that constitutes the genre, then the first MMOs apparently aren't MMOs at all according to you guys.

http://www.wikiwand.com/en/...

Am I seriously the only person in this little comment thread that cared to look it up without just assuming MMO means shit tons of players?

Kleptic3471d ago (Edited 3471d ago )

^no, you're just one of the few that looked it up, and also cherry picked small details...

again...by your logic...any multiplayer game is then a MMO...a persistent game world shared by interactive players?...whats the difference then between Destiny and CoD?...who on earth every said CoD is an MMO...but it fits your description?...Devs patch changes in regularly, balance things, add new content, etc...there is the persistence to the 'game world'...players 'interact with each other' in either a competitive or co-op mechanic...etc, etc, etc,...

seriously...the only reason this MMO part of Destiny hung on is that it fell well short of most people's expectations...both consumer wise and critically...people are grasping for catch phrases to desperately find things that it does differently than other multiplayer games...its a co-op multiplayer shooter with RPG elements...

and sure, it has MMO elements too...just as many as every single modern multiplayer game released in the past 5 years...

Aye it is an online game but not an mmo, just because it has rpg elements and your character is stored on a server doesn't make it an mmo.

MarkusMcNugen3471d ago (Edited 3471d ago )

You are correct, it doesn't. It's the persistent world shared by online players that makes it an MMO.

Blasphemy3471d ago

by your definition that would make every game an mmo.

Grap3472d ago

Destiny is a broken mmo end of story.

HaydenJameSmith3472d ago (Edited 3472d ago )

@mandf
"Little bits and peices are the very reason it's not classified as an mmo."

So little bits a pieces are enough to not classify it as an MMO but lots of other elements aren't enough to classify it as an MMO...

Just cause its a much smaller scale than the usual MMO doesn't make it not a MMO, It is bad compared to the usual standards of PC MMOs I will give you that. But it shares enough similarities that in most people minds it would be classed as such. I have played plenty of MMOs and while Destiny is not a conventional MMO it is still one none the less.

Yes Borderlands is similar in the sense but it is just trying to be a RPG with co op really, same with Diablo 3 an Online RPG... there much more story driven too than Destiny, which seems underwhelming and incomplete as far as Story goes. Defiance was a console MMO, with basic story, lots of fetch quests and completely underwhelming PvP and Raids plus very small explorable area... It was still an MMO none the less. Defiance just had the higher player count, thats about it... Destiny is an MMO, a bad one I will give you that but its still fun to play. I just wish it was a better game and delivered on the promises of Bungie:

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

"All playable terrain they said"...

@OSchino1907

"So basically because it doesn't have a Massive number of Multiplayer players Online together, doesn't mean it's not an MMO. SMH face palm."

Thats not what I said, I was just saying what Defiance had compared to Destiny and yes exactly the player count isn't really what makes a Sci fi MMO or RPGMMO or whatever you want to call it. Quite frankly dunno how u can think Destiny isn't a MMO when you know Defiance is a MMO. Your not even giving reasons why it isn't just disagreeing with everything I say, which doesn't make you right. Anyway chill out, I was just explaining why it is regarded as an MMO to most people as well as myself... Chill out.

Oschino19073472d ago (Edited 3472d ago )

So basically because it doesn't have a Massive number of Multiplayer players Online together, doesn't mean it's not an MMO. SMH face palm.

Sorry but Defiance is way more of an MMO in every facet. You clearly barely touched it or never played past the beta. Not saying it was the best game but it had a whole lot more going on in terms of it being a MMO.

KrisButtar3472d ago (Edited 3472d ago )

I disagree Destiny is a MMO just because you don't need to play with or even see a massive amount of people for it to still be a MMO as the game is still supporting a large numbers. There are still a massive amount of people online playing multiplayer.

"A massively multiplayer online game (also called MMO and MMOG) is a multiplayer video game which is capable of supporting large numbers of players simultaneously. By necessity, they are played on the Internet."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

caseh3471d ago

Sorry dude, you've taken that wiki quote out of context. By that definition, every single game that has online capabilities is effectively an MMO as there are most likely a large number of people playing a game online at any time.

Kleptic3471d ago (Edited 3471d ago )

yeah this thread is blowing my mind...

its like 2 people saying 'come watch us throw a ball and hit it with a bat'...then people who show up saying 'I'm watching a baseball game'...?

calling destiny an MMO undermines the VERY DEFINITION OF WHAT AN MMO IS

its an online co-op FPS with RPG elements...NOT MMO elements...most MMO's are actually MMORPG's, but they get the MMO tag because they HAVE a lot of players in a given server, or 'world'...

if you call Destiny an MMO...then you better be calling literally any modern multiplayer game an MMO also...

KrisButtar3471d ago

Guys MMO is a very broad term and that is the point, its not a MMORPG like WoW or ESO which a lot of people associate the term with. If the game doesn't have a single player aspect or offline gameplay I call it a MMO. The Crew, The Division, Destiny, Defiance, ESO, WoW, FF14 are all MMOs just a couple are MMORPGs.

Destiny is just a MMOFPS with RPGs elements. I'm not sure how people can say a the game has MMO elements because the only thing to make a MMO is the "massively multiplayer online." Most seem to think that MMO = MMORPG which is not true as MMO is a general term and MMORPG is specific.

Kleptic3471d ago

^again...that is fine and great...

but you're saying any multiplayer game is then an MMO...right?

there are multiplayer games (probably 90% of all games released have some form of multiplayer anymore)...

then there are MASSIVE multiplayer games...they're not one in the same...and Destiny has NONE of the massive part...it just a multiplayer game...withe RPG elements layered into its persistence...

KrisButtar3471d ago

"then there are MASSIVE multiplayer games...they're not one in the same...and Destiny has NONE of the massive part...it just a multiplayer game...withe RPG elements layered into its persistence... "

Not any multiplayer. Yes most games have multiplayer and that doesn't make them a MMO because they have offline play and they do not have persistent worlds.

I do not see see no difference in the "massive multiplayer" in ESO, FF14, or Destiny. 2 of the 3 are more traditional MMORPGs where as Destiny is more of a MMOFPS with some RPG elements.

CorndogBurglar3472d ago (Edited 3472d ago )

Destiny has tons of MMO elements. Strikes, Raids, playing with a group of people, the grinding, a hub area where players can meet.

It looks like you have the wrong idea of what MMO's are. In MMO's you aren't technically playing with a massive amount of people either. In every MMO i've played you can stilk onky have a limited number of players in your party, usually 3-6.

However, there are plenty of moments in Destiny, like teaming up with random players during a patrol when an Event happens. Thats very similar to other MMO's like City of Heroes.

Even those games you mentioned, while not being MMO's, they do have MMO ELEMENTS, which is exactly what your statement said Destiny has none of.

So just admit that your statement was wrong. I agree, I wouldn't consider Destiny an MMO, but to say it has no elements of an MMO is ludicrous.

BallsEye3472d ago

I've played my fair share of MMO's. Me, my wife and some friends got to level 30 in Destiny and got extremely bored. So then I thought...let's try this Elder Scrolls Online on PC, it had pretty crappy scores but I love ES series and hey, it gonna come to consoles. Man I am so blown away. I've played them all but the amount of content, detail, overal work put in ESO is mindblowing. Literally best MMO I've ever played (the only MMO that feels as good as single player game when it comes to quest, lore, graphics and gameplay quality). Why am I writing this? It made me wonder what the F was bungiee doing for all of those years of development (first hint in of development Halo ODST in 2009!) and with all of that money especially the 500mil from Ativision. Whole destiny is not even as big and detailed as one of plenty regions in ESO. I really tried to like destiny and I'm a huge bungiee fan but they just screwed up this time.

slivery3472d ago (Edited 3472d ago )

I laugh so hard every time you people try to claim what Bungie has, do you even know what MMO means? RPG aspects have nothing to do with an MMO or what it is.

By the exact definition of what an MMO is, Destiny is an MMO. So get over it already.

You don't have to play with every person in the damn game for it to be an MMO. What is more stupid is you literally just said it yourself, an MMO is a massively multiplayer online game. A MMO is determined by the number of people who can play the game online at the same time, not the amount of people you play with in a party.

"A massively multiplayer online game is a multiplayer video game which is capable of supporting large numbers of players simultaneously."

Does Destiny not do this? Sure looks exactly like an MMO to me.

People really should learn what these acronyms even mean, MMO does not stand for a certain type of game play, any game can be an MMO as long as it supports a large amount of players to be on at the same time, in the same place. Being an FPS doesn't change that and there are plenty of MMO's that are FPS too, just like Destiny.

The only elements to an MMO, are the amount of players in the same game world. So even the person who wrote this article, clearly has no idea what MMO means either.

Nor does Bungie apparently because it wouldn't matter if the game was called MMO, it is one by definition. It was moronic of them to even try to differentiate their game or morph the definition of MMO into something negative, when there are no negative connotations associated with what it actually means, only ones people make up.

TheSaint3471d ago

Even the title says, Destiny is suffering from the same problems as an MMO, it doesn't say it's an MMO, learn to comprehend.

RedstonerMC3471d ago

@sixzerofour It has rpg elements because it's not completely real. Every game that you play any role has role playing elements... It has mmo elements too.

ManAnimalX3471d ago (Edited 3471d ago )

@mandf @SixZeroFour

10000% agree with you both....

Destiny IS NOT and bears NO RESEMBLANCE to an MMO.

It has online multiplayer and SOME RPG Elements.....that's it.

And so the Author is ignorant along with tons of I'm sure Destiny d__ cough! riders..

I personally think Destiny sucks, it's a borderline "free to play" game, but you also gotta pay for the single player story. Wtf?!.

Yea folks, pay for story line that's absent from the game, along with all the other DLC'S that YOU will have to pay MORE $$$ for.

by the time your done being nickled and dime
you will have spent hundreds of dollars on this game.....no thanks bungie, thanks for showing your TRUE COLORS though. ..I know what yr about...that $$$, not the gamer.

ChronoJoe3471d ago

It really depends. Massive is really depending on your interpretation. For instance the original Guild Wars was always considered an MMO.

This is because they employ a technique known as instancing. So the location is generated for each group of players entering that area, rather than everyone sharing the same space. This technically keeps player counts low, but these games are still classified as MMOs.

In this case its really dependent on the developers portrayal I suppose. NCSoft Openly brandish their game as an MMO, but Bungie are reluctant to use the label. Despite both games not technically featuring a 'massive' number of players in any of the gameplay segments.

Possible confusion comes from the use of the word 'massive'. If we slip back in time, anything over 20 players was a huge amount to have in a game at any one time. Now people seem to reserve the term for large games, featuring 256 or more players in any one, individual instance.

Either way, whether it's an MMO or not, arguing semantics is a waste of time. Destiny objectively shares many traits of games traditionally associated to MMos, so the comparison makes sense.

I have a level 27 Hunter and a level 23 Warlock. The game is set up to make you play all three classes to make the best use of all the gear drops. If you hit the level cap and have all the exotic gear, playing is pointless with the character unless you want to bank material/coins for future content. Even if I hit the max level before new content is released, I play to hang out with my friends more than I play to max everything out.

JeffGUNZ3472d ago

This. I just enjoy playing the game. I like doing the daily heroic, a few bounties, and some material farming to get my gear to increase. I only play like 1-2 hours a day max to keep it fresh.

Destiny is just about done. A couple more software releases and it's player base will diminish even further. By dec when the proposed DLC will release it will be interesting to see how many are still playing.

Not many I suspect.

Exies73472d ago (Edited 3472d ago )

Eh, you'd be surprised. There will probably still be plenty of people playing, but I highly doubt it will be the numbers it's at now.

A solid amount most likely, and each expansion will probably boost its player base but a lot of players have left or seem to be leaving because Destiny really doesn't do anything unique per se. At least not for now. And the world itself is rather shallow and not very fun to explore.

Destiny Made Over $160 Million In Microtransaction Revenue In Less Than 2 Years

Destiny has made over $160 million in MTX revenue, and these numbers only account the data from late 2017 to early 2019.

Sgt_Slaughter331d ago

That's extremely low for microtransactions, especially for a game that's essentially designed around it

LucasRuinedChildhood331d ago (Edited 331d ago )

This was back when the game wasn't free to play.

The figures are from November 2017 to February 2019 (1 year and 4 months).

Based on that projection, the MTX revenue for Destiny 2 likely would have been closer to ~$240m for 2 years.

Not sure if premium expansions are included in that figure either although ... I'd hope that they are though and that most of the revenue was for actual content like Forsaken.

People spend way too much money on cosmetics.

Rude-ro331d ago (Edited 331d ago )

Seasons($10 and just got bumped to $12) and dungeon keys($10 each, two a year) are through the eververse(micro transaction) store.
