(PlayStation LifeStyle): Recent news has shown that Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Unity could have been released with 1080p resolution on PlayStation 4, but because the Xbox One version could only manage 900p, Ubisoft scaled back the PS4 version to “avoid all the debates and stuff” about console specs.

How is he entitled. You've bought an expensive console over it's rival counterpart because it's more powerful in some places, so of course you are going to want develoeprs to use those better specs because then you will be getting the best out of the console you've paid for.

Same goes for the game aswell, if you buy a game which could do better things then obviously you are going to want those better features.

Let's just say that by some far stretch of the imagination a game gets released next year, let's use the division as an example, that can be more enhanced on the xbox one because of "the power of teh cloudz", but ubisoft decides to not utilize "teh cloudz" and make the game the same on all platforms because they don't want to "hurt ps fans feelings". Do you think that any of the self righteous xbox fanatics who aren't seeing any issue with ACU would not go freaking ballistic with ubisoft's decision with The division?

It's hypocrisy to the fullest. the people who are saying that this is not an issue would never say the same thing if their console of choice was the one being gimped for parity. Then again, my first console was a Colecovision where displaying a circle on the screen meant that the gamer had to use their "imagination" to see it.

Too many other elements of a game make it good. Graphics is but a small piece.

I get what you are saying, sure I would love it to be 1080p as I am a PS4 gamer too. But I seem to remember last gen gamers not "demanding" all their games to be native 720p even when the 360 and PS3 were technically capable as some twilight games proved. Just because your machine can do 1080p, doesn't mean it is going to each and every time. I mean if a first party game comes out that isn't 1080p are you going to put up a fuss? Or will it be down to the fact that there are all sorts of other aspects that cause the game to not run at a full resolution?

How do we know it isn't to take the load off the CPU? What if the framerates were too unstable at 1080p? There could be more to this story than Ubisoft honestly not wanting to piss of MS fans. Every other 3rd party company has no issues making the PS4 version better, so why should Ubisoft be any different? Didn't AC4 have a higher resolution on the PS4 than the XB1?

DLC is a way of life, I don't agree with it, but it's a way for developers to extend the shelf life of a game. Destiny and Driveclub will both have DLC which will require money, sad but inevitable I guess.

I don't remember this huge outcry on the first Xbox when we know damn well many just ported the PS2 game and didn't do much else. I guess when you have a system with all the games on it you don't care about a more powerful system that cost the same.

Let's use an extreme as an example, now remember this is an extreme example in order to make the thought process of the critics more obvious.

Think of any upcoming game you're looking forward to. Let's say The Witcher 3 (if you're not looking forward to The Witcher 3 just replace it with a game you are looking forward to...and seek mental help).

Let's say within weeks of release Sony notice a large resurgence of interest in the PS1 among hipsters and to capitalise on this they decide they want the Witcher 3 released on PS1, only they don't want it to be outshined by any other version out there so they 'persuade' CD Projekt Red to release the game on all systems looking like a PS1 game, with all the low resolution, silly blocky polygon characters and 3ft draw distance you'd expect.

What is your reaction? Are you irritated that the developers decided not to give you the best version of the game they could for the sake of shady business deals or are you just eternally grateful that they're giving you the great privilege of playing their new game?

BF4 was only 900p and I think it looked pretty darn good IMO. So if a game had to be held back and can only look that good, I guess I could handle it.

Well like I said it's an extreme example simply used to highlight the business practice people are objecting to. Whether you still think the downgraded game looks nice or not, it's still that exact same shady anti-consumer business tactic.

Speaking personally, even though 1080p has been the most important part of the jump in tech for me as I find the crispness really helps with immersion, I'd still probably buy this if it was a game I was desperately looking forward to. As it is I'm beyond sick of this dull milked dry franchise and would only have even considered picking it up if it turned out to be enough of a technical marvel that it made up for the sameness of everything else about it. As it is I'm just looking at a dull game that isn't going to look quite as crisp and sharp as anything else I've been playing, and I don't want it.

Watching videos and the only thing that lives up to AC4 are the cut scenes and some of the buildings. But, character models in general look much lower in quality outside of cinematic cut scenes. There's also a lot of blur that hurts my eyes to help hide AA.

You can't be serious. I play games on my Xbox 360 and PS3 to this day and most of them are 720p. They'll nail down the 1080p eventually. This game was in development during the transition from old-gen and while new-gen was being created. It has been worked on since Brotherhood. Late 2015-2016 will give us more stable games in terms of resolution. Give it time people.

For now, can't we just enjoy the games?

The game looks incredible even at 900p. I wish people would stop whining over numbers. I am not concerned about the graphics whatsoever. There has been no downgrade since E3. People should concentrate on gameplay, not graphics. This game has been in development for 4 years, meaning Ubisoft had to guess the specs of the next-gen consoles throughout its development. This is only the first year of the console cycle. You are not being robbed, the truth is that companies just need more time with these consoles so that they can focus on optomization. The "in order to reduce debate" argument is ridiculous as AC 4 had a patch to update it to 1080p. They are just hiding the fact that it takes them time to learn about these next-gen consoles and unlock their power. Look at AC 1 and look at AC 4. The different in graphical fidelity is immense. Give it time, enjoy the game for not just its graphics (they will be incredible anyway) but for its innovation in AI, story telling and gameplay.

As for "unstable 1080p" they've addressed this as well: "It's not the number of polygons that affect the framerate. We could be running at 100fps if it was just graphics, but because of AI, we're still limited to 30 frames per second."

Because of the weak CPUs they're limited to 30fps. The CPU doesn't have much to do with the resolution, though, it's the task of the GPU to render and output frames at 1080p.

lol, that's what I don't get. This is the 4th AC game that will release in less than two years. AC3, AC4, ACL, and now ACU. 5th if you include the ACL remaster. There is more AC games released than Mario...which is generally considered a milked franchise.

It's a decent series, and the games themselves are generally fun, but every single iteration has suffered from stupid AI,terrible graphics glitches, and major bugs from rushed implementation.

AI seems to be the excuse for not being able to achieve 1080p, but seriously, AC has never been a pinnacle of amazing AI, and I doubt that this one will raise the bar compared to some other examples out there. I've gone and watched some of the videos which were supposedly showing the amazing new AI, and while a bit better than previous games, it certainly isn't what I would call a new benchmark for all others to compare themselves too.

The point isn't lost on me, and I have the collector's edition preordered. I'm on the fence atm because I really love the statues that come in the AC collector's editions, and being a collector of those sorts of things makes me torn.

On the other hand, I don't want to support the practice of forced parity, mostly because I've spoken out against parity for the longest time.

However, I'm also a developer, and having seen the videos of what's going on in the scenes, it's possible that Ubi just wasn't able to achieve 1080p on either system, so they went with the next best standard resolution. It's entirely possible that the PS4 version will still look better at 900p, as at that resolution, it can still process more per frame than the X1 can, so lighting or textures may be better...but I'm dubious if that would be the case.

What I don't agree with is their reasoning that the CPU bottleneck is the cause for this decision, because I know how resolution is determined, and the CPU would not be strained by upping the resolution...although the GPU certainly could. Given historically performance differences between the two consoles in terms of resolution, the cards are stacked against Ubi for being able to prove otherwise.

Pontbriand also told Videogamer that Unity's A.I. and on-screen non-player characters require more power from the CPU (the limiting factor) rather than the GPU. This has lead to a spec that is lower than the maximum 1080p, 60 frames per second output of which the new consoles are capable.

More power needed from the CPU It can't be 1080p on PS4 for the reasons outlined, stop believing the crap Sony tells you, and listen to the devs for once?

You can say that again, KNWS. Maybe you should take your own advice. The fact is the PS4 is more powerful, so there's no reason for them to output the same quality.

And generally speaking, increasing the resolution doesn't affect the CPU significantly. Not only that, but we know in the PS4, some CPU tasks can be offloaded to the GPU.

This isn't crap from sony, these are facts. No amount of kicking and screaming and insults are going to change that.

All things being equal in the game(AI, textures, effects, etc), then the CPU would have very little influence on the resolution of a game. This is even disregarding offloading those AI calculations onto the GPU which is what both systems were designed to do.

Because all things being equal, the 100% fact is that the PS4 could still have a higher resolution than the X1 due to the more powerful GPU and faster memory bus in the PS4. There is no way to argue this statement, it is how graphics computing works. CPU has almost no affect on GPU processes when it comes to resolution. This has been true for almost 20 years since graphics cards gained their own bus inside computers, and moved onto distinct memory architectures which both systems provide through segmenting their shared memory. It's the entire reason that video cards gained their own bus and memory...so the limitations of the rest of the computer would not slow down graphics.

I'm more inclined to believe that Ubi just couldn't meet the 1080 on either system...possibly stuttery frames on PS4 due to archaic AI implementation, so just went with the next most common HD standard(900p). On top of that, I can understand that Ubi would not want to rewrite a massive underlaying portion of their AI code to get GPU compute working on the PS4, but GPU compute should have been a consideration early on in the games design.

Heck, I don't know why X1 gamers aren't mad that Ubi isn't taking advantage of MS cloud offerings to improve the AI, as it's supposedly able to achieve the same thing, and could possibly push ACU to 1080p on the X1 if the CPU truly is the bottleneck. I mean the game is already an online game right? so what's the harm in utilizing the cloud? Would you be mad if they did that?

They didn't really do themselves any favors by how they announced the news though, and when they say they made their decision to "avoid all the debates and stuff", it makes any other reasoning they come up with look like damage control of the highest order because their original quote makes a lot more sense than the more scrutinized reasons that they've given since then.

I can at least respect your point of view. It is a tiring and 99% of the time fruitless debate on what we are given versus what we believe we should get. It's lead to the negative tagging of gamers as entitled and pretty much has kept gaming journos sheltered and clothed for years now. The problem is, there really is no true end in sight to it.

The only time gamers will be treated fairly in this day and age by a major publisher is when they have no choice but to do it. But, when they do it, it is worth it. Just look at all the changes from Dragon Age 2 to Dragon Age: Inquisition. EA can't afford to lose an IP like that and make the same mistakes as before, so they worked to change it. And change it for the benefit of gamers who felt they deserved more for their money.

My God... People are amazing. These are video GAMES. When did we lose sight of the 'game' part of video games and focus more on resolution? Gameplay should always be king and Unity is promising in that factor in that (most important) category. The difference between 900p and 1080p should not be treated as though it were greater than the gameplay and its content.
