I think you mean "if" they can re-organize the smartphone and tablet business, plus initiate a turn-around in other consumer electronics categories, like TV and Audio.

The smartphone business is very, very bad for Sony as they have little to no carrier support globally. This puts them under extreme pressure as to how and where to sell devices, thus the heavy expense of development and marketing fails to generate enough revenue, resulting in losses in excess of $2 billion this year. And that is on the top of the $1 billion they lost last year.

The bigger concern for gamers is that when a company loses $3 billion they have to make cuts and reductions across the board and that will inevitably have an impact on the Playstation brand.

Hopefully Sony can turn things around quickly, because in spite of the success of the PS4, continued weakness in other categories could result in more drastic measures that affect gamers.

Sony's smartphone business completely tanked their stock this week when they announced this fiscal years losses got revised from around $400 million to an astonishing $2.1 BILLION. OUCH!

They even canceled their dividend, something they haven't done in the companies 50 year history.

No kidding they are losing money, it's a surprise to no one. It's called an electronics arm that was horribly run in the past. Plus a lot of places don't even see Sony as a premium brand anymore, something Sony noted themselves. A complete restructure of how and where they sell their phones is needed, also noted by them. Even with losing money though, the CEO notes Sony is on track to turning profit in the next fiscal year.

One thing is for sure, PlayStation is the product to have, and with Sony implementing PlayStation Now through their consumer electronics, they could be even more popular than their conservative estimates.

How consumers identify their brand is a big problem, Sony has been obsessed with being the expensive premium brand, which many places don't recognize them as anymore, that is part of what is being restructured, along with carrier support like you mentioned for smart phones in markets that they need their phones in. PlayStation Now is a huge incentive for consumers, along with remote play and cable-free television on consumer electronics.

Am I missing something, because I only see 162k for the PS4 and US numbers only. I don't doubt the 472k worldwide, but I would like to see the source and numbers for all platforms.

Nevermind I see it on the home page of VGchartz. WOW. So much for the XBO having a chance of winning September. The good news is that their numbers are staying consistent in Japan at 3000k units (shockingly), and their EU numbers are still pretty high 3x what they were selling (12k) although last week they were 4x their original numbers.

PS4 has won this generation.
XBO is doing better, but now I can say there's a good chance that $329 - $349 XBO price drop is happening soon like this holiday soon, and no later than April 2015.

Nintendo's about to be booted to 3rd if they don't do something and soon. They need to drop down to $250 this holiday before the XBO has it's price cut, or they just gave the XBO 2nd place.

The PS brand has always been super strong in EU. The original PS won EU, the PS2 won EU, and the PS3 is on it's way to winning EU as we speak as it's just 700k behind the Wii on an average the PS3 is outselling the Wii by 14k - 15k each week in EU. This time next year the PS3 will have won EU making it 3 generations in a row, going on 4.

I'm in the US, but I wouldn't be mad if Sony started supporting EU more, and if E3 vs. Gamescom is anything to go by it might start happening. EU is loyal, US not so much the majority over here goes with the Pop Culture hit, or the cheapest with just as good quality if there isn't a clear winner.

MCC will ride the wave of nostalgia to a pot of gold for sure. live online multiplayer on classic maps is HUGE money. even without updated graphics. but I am a bit worried based on some recent previews done in terms of the updated graphics. but yeah, the old stuff even as is will sell systems.

but will it be a 'boom' enough to stop this ps4 train? highly highly doubt it... and D4 is dead on arrival given its roots in kinect. and forza horizon is probably on even footing with driveclub at this point. sunset overdrive looks bonkers but I don't know if it's going to do any better for xbox than resistance did for the ps3... a nice game that fans enjoy but the masses won't understand or bother to check out.

Destiny was actually one of 3 free game choices during it's launch. Microsoft was basically buying units effectively selling a Xbone and artificially bumping up Destiny Xbone sales. Still counts as a sale even if it is $0. Not sure about overall sales, but, imagine how bad Xbone sales would have been if they didn't offer 2 free games?! My store alone sold close to 80 PS4's versus 12 Xbones. Our Destiny PS4 bundle preorders alone were more than our Xbone launch week numbers.

It seems like XO gets updates every month with features based on the articles I have seen on N4G. But who knows since I only own a PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4. But I do know my PS3 has more features than my PS4 and way better games even though you can tell the resolution difference between the two most of the games are nothing amazing so far.

I have both and I'm sorry but the dashboard is evolving fast and is already miles ahead of the ps4s. In this regard it is just like last generation. In fact MS is impressing me with how they are coming out with significant updates literally every month for it. I can't count how many updates for system stability I have been forced to take and I'm still looking at a bunch of boxes in a long row. It's been a year and hardly anything has been added what's going on? This has nothing to do with the games but the system experience itself and believe it or not some people will buy it for that reason.

Unfortunately, it doesn't change the fact that the PS4 kills the One on the actual gaming experience, which is clearly all that matters to the market.

MS is constantly updating because they're desperate to be better at *something*. If the PS4 caught up on the dash front, the One would have absolutely no selling point.

As you can see DeadManMMX hasn't listed any of these improved features that makes the XBO miles ahead of the PS4. I have both consoles and I'll tell you the truth.

The simple truth is the XBO has snap mode over the PS4, TV over the PS4, full voice controls over the PS4 (more on this later), folders, and vastly more apps than the PS4 (app & services like EA Access, Uplay, CW, Syfy, etc...).

Snap Mode is a good one, as it allows you to do 2 things at once. You can play a game and check on things like videos, party list, etc... It's a feature that would be nice to have on the PS4 as well.

TV, I don't watch much TV as it is. Maybe 5 shows for the entire year, which I watch online, so needless to say if you watch a lot of TV it could be a good app, but it's really not that difficult to press the input button on a remote.

Voice Control. Is great and works for the most part. However, maneuvering the OS WITHOUT Kinect is quite annoying at times. Using Snap w/o Kinect is aggravating, because you can't always hold B and close out, you'll have to go to the dashboard and unsnap it (I don't know why the view button doesn't just snap and unsnap by double tapping it). And instead of having multiple slides like the 360 dashboard everything is crammed onto 3 slides for better and worse.

Folders. You don't have a huge row of games....PS4 I'm looking at you. Everything is tucked away in a nice games folder.

Apps & Services. Again the XBO has way more apps, but many are TV apps, and if you don't care about TV, like I don't, to being with then these apps aren't a big deal, although I just downloaded the CW app (Supernatural and hopefully Flash are my shows for this season).

Now the PS4's advantages.

Download / Updates / Installs. They happen simultaniously, unlike the XBO, allowing you to get back into games quickly or install a game quickly, while you'll be waiting several minutes longer and more depending on the size of the install.

Loading. The XBO OS loads for just about every common thing you do. Thankfully these are brief 1 second loads if that, but annoying nonetheless.

Simplicity. I don't understand why MS had to change something that the 360 had perfect, such as starting a party and sending invites. The XBO suffer Windows 8 syndrom in several areas, where they take something simple that worked, and everyone knew, and force you to take 2 - 3 more steps all for the sake of visual presentation. Keep it simple stupid comes to mind.

PS+: I've used it only once. It works, but the pricing is kind of off. It's not where it needs to be now, but if it ever does then it can be a great service.

Those are the differences. The XBO has more diversity over the PS4 thanks to apps, TV, and full voice controls. Also snap mode and folders are something the PS4 could definitely use. However, it's not as far advanced as people would like you to believe, and I would gladly trade TV and a good amount of apps in for better Download / Updates / Installs, and returning some things back to the way 360 had them.

@frosty besides some resolution issues which take nothing away from gameplay I haven't noticed much difference. The number one reason I bought mine at launch was for Infamous Second Son and I was honestly disappointed in it. Something was missing and the experience wasn't as good as what I had with one and two. The story and setting and villain were boring. The main hero eghhh Cole over Delsin anyday. I mean seriously we go from Kessler to The Beast to....unmemorable concrete lady :(. That and Killzone are the big exclusives and Knack....moving on. Look I know the great games are coming and this time next year well all be swimming in Uncharteds and the Orders and they will be great but here and now not so much.

@abizzel I was on my job didn't have time to type all that and I'm on ipad but now that I have more time.

- external hdd support that actually allows you to take it to a friends house sign in and play

- expanded social featured including fb like likes, commenting and posts

- a full media player (for those not on preview program it comes next month)

- the dashboard preview program

- full resume (which we were promised for ps4 a year and a half ago. What?). Meaning I left home and turned off my console playing wolfenstein the new order. When I go back it will resume at the pause screen where I left it. No loading no restart.

Admittedly to get the best out of it you have to have kinect this is because the dashboard and system were designed around it.

Those are US only numbers, and also the week where every store was having the MS promotion, buy an XBO or XBO bundle get any game free (and a $50 gift card if you bought it from a MS store). Chance are most people who bought an XBO during that time got Destiny free.

Worldwide Destiny is rumored to have sold around 5 million copies, with the PS4 accounting for half of the copies sold.

Considering Xbox was the goto platform for shooters last generation even if destiny sold the same on playstation as xbox, that's a HUGE win as if destiny only released on 360 and ps3 I have no doubt that the 360 version would have easily outsold the ps3 version by a million at least. So that's got to be a HUGE win for Sony.

As worldwide its outselling the Xbox one every other week in fact for the last few months sales have been pretty much neck and neck and with smash coming out this Christmas its far from dead. Wiiu and Xbox one are this gens PS3 and Xbox 360 (not graphics wise just numbers) and the ps4 is the wii storming off ahead.

Sure but PS3 despite it's low 4% software sales compared to 360's 14% beat the XB360 in hardware sales that week. PS4 outsold XB1 by 2:1 in the week(300% boost week on week) even though XB1's average selling price was £309. XB1 did get a boost as well to note.

Exactly 360 sales made up for xbox numbers as xbox has always been the shooters fans console. Them numbers are really helping changing that though.

Given that the x1 figures might be slightly inflated, it's still doing pretty decently. Most likely will improve with some big titles coming in next few months. Just surprised at the sales gap of the x1 compared to the ps4 in Europe, what's going on there?

We don't even need to use VGcharts to determine if the PS4 is outselling the competition or not. All we have to look are the sales numbers that Sony and Microsoft announce in order to figure that out. Since Microsoft refuses to announce what they sold that's a clear indicator that they are behind Sony.
