I would say once the 20nm node is mature then mobile devices will have graphics performance as good as the previous generation consoles.

But that's probably a year away despite the iphone 6 using a 20nm process.

You have to take into account the fact most games of that console generation were 720p or less, but mobile games on high end smartphones at their native screen res will be considerably higher.

Current cores like the 28nm Adreno 330 in the SGS5 are probably about half as fast as the GPUs in Xbox 360 and PS3.

So a matured 20nm design could and should get close to doubling that in a similar thermal envelope but it'll take time.

It is still impressive that you can go from a state of the art full size chip to something inside a small mobile device and have similar performance in about 10 years.

Frankly, the graphics now a days on mobiles are getting close despite a huge computational power gap between smart phones and consoles. Why?

Because we are hitting sort of a ceiling in terms of graphical fidelity increase versus computational power increase. A large power increase results in a tiny fidelity increase.

The 6+ is 1080p and much more powerful.

Also, the encoding of Apple is far different than those used by Microsoft's Windows and Google's Android. Apple iOS is much lighter and demand less power to run, making it faster and more efficient when compared to the other's OS on the same Hardware.

Power aside (CPU/GPU). I would like to refresh the memories of what memory those iPhones have.
16GB SSD. VS Console 500GB HDD.

What I mean is that even if it "had" the power, the game would just end up being extremely short because there's too much elements in graphics that takes a lot of memory.

Killzone Shadowfall had to be compressed from 290GB to 45Gb. So, short answer, No.

It doesn't matter which version of the iPhone 6 it is, my statement still stands. The Vita is more powerful than all those platforms, and the iPhone use the same graphics. However, the iPhone 6 "at worse" uses a 2-generation new model 4-core GPU than the Vita, and at best uses the most powerful 6-core GPU as does the iPhone 6+.

The iPhone is more powerful than the handhelds, and the 6th-gen performance consoles (Wii & Ouya included).

Also the screen is still a little too small for me too enjoy highly detailed graphics anyway. Not to mention that smartphones will always be behind consoles anyway. It's really common sense. Powerful hardware produces more heat and takes more space than a smartphone can offer. More space = stronger hardware at any given time. Sure the hardware keeps shrinking but by the time smartphone devices might catch up there will be a new console generation out already.

I have no love for apple, their computers, the stupid watch, or their tablets.... but I do like their iphone, and it has nothing to do with name brand. First of all, it's a quality product. It's not some flimsy piece of plastic that ends up broken like the vast majority of my friends who have Android phones. It's also got a great OS once jail-broken because it's user friendly, well designed, and intuitive. It has perfect hands-free, Bluetooth streaming, and voice command support with my Audi A4 which is a big deal for me. Android phones were much more temperamental when getting everything working with my car.
Most of all, iOS has by far the most AND best apps. Last I checked iOS had 4x as many as Android, and the gap is not closing one bit. In fact, it costs much more, and takes much more time to develop for Android than iOS. This is due to Android having less sophisticated development tools, a more cumbersome API, having to deal with countless screen sizes/types, and enormous QA issues due to fragmentation. Everyone has been parroting for years that due to marketshare, Android would blow right past iOS in terms of quality and number of apps, which has been completely proven false. In fact, in the US the iPhone is at 41% of the smartphone market (vs 51% for android) and gaining.

JMC8888- Who pays the full retail price for any of these phones? Doing so is idiotic since the monthly rate-plans aren't substantially cheaper when you fully own your phone, so by paying $600+ up front you're essentially paying TWICE for the phone. Its not the graphics that matter. It's the freedom. The limited control scheme on phones severely hampers the types of games that can be made. That's why clones are so pervasive. Someone comes up with a good simple idea that works perfectly for phones (Clash of Clans, Piano Tiles, Flappy Bird,ect) then everyone else rides their coat tails.

I honestly want to know how many of you actually have controls for your phone, and play core games on your phone. Because I can already tell the VAST majority haven't, and are speaking through sheer ignorance.

Mobile has come a long way, and it's nice to be able to pull your phone out and play a good game at anytime since you almost always have your phone on you.

Mobile is in no way a replacement for console gaming, or PC gaming. But the handheld market is in trouble because of it, and offers serious competition.

I have used the iphone 4s and 5 along with the galaxy 4 and 5 amd the iphones are just crap in my opinion. Don't really care for the samsungs either but they're better then iphone any day. overall the iphone walks all over the note 3 with its strong single core performance, in real world use the iphone is going to whoop the note 3 even worse than in synthetic benchmarks. The problem with android isn't so much the os as the company that uses it for their products. Android is a customizable os for phone makers. Samsung, htc, lg, they all put their own customized versions of android on their devices which is one of the reasons some apps have issues on some devices and some apps run better on others. My old xperia play had almost a stock base android os on it and I never had any problems with it running an app and it blew away iphone my gf had. She switched to an s4 recently and likes it better then the ipone 5 she had but hey if you want to go by other peoples opinions and benchmarks just because they have a website then be prepared for dissapointment in life. Btw you can reinstall the android base os on a phone to get a performance boost and when you do that its the same as doing a clean install of windows on your pc to get rid of bloatqare and other crap that can eat up memory.

What this and many, Gamers i think are Not paying very much attention is Now Mobile Chipsets which used to be running Java M2E as the main OS was going to be running Advanced games like snake..or 2D side scroller's with very in the stark contrast what new Mobile chipsets are able to run today/s! that was a joke!

What it really is pointing out is the mobile chipsets in to day and date consumer electronic mobile phones are no longer those small high powered required low GPU to not even Having a GPU at all chipset, to having a chipset that can run a full desktop environment OS in its full desktop ver. without having to strip out parts of the OS!

That is not what coined term "Console Quality" gaming is really about its a statement to industry developments not really about industry to consumer's.

what its really about is right now, Todays Mobile Chips are able to Handle "full 3D GAME ENGINES THAT LIVING ROOM GAME CONSOLES USE" on Mobile Chips! for what is mainly a d@mn communication device as its main purpose but inside this communications device has an advanced enough GPU to run Game's Like GTA: SA which was at one time only on PC, Living Room Game console's! Now your everyday Smartphone!

Notice that "every day smartphone" is now running advanced 3D Games that 8 to 9 years ago only very high cost Smartphones could run.

Now even cheap pay as you go phones are running Adreno 225 GPU not just single core GPU's at that.

so yes the iPhone 6 can indeed run console Quality Games, just like the samsung GS5.

@Joeorc The snapdragon 805 is running a single model, if you make even last gen consoles run a single model of anything it will look very impressive compared to today console standard. It is also running at 15 frame per second which gamers would consider below standard. If PS4 or X1 decided to make a single model to demo then it would look beyond pixar quality like possibly running in 8K at 600 frames per second but games aren't meant to demonstrate a single model being the reason why gamers don't consider that real time. When the power from that single fly get put in an actual game running with alot of models on the snapdragon and background with textures in AI it gets reduced down to look like something on a PS1. Therefore it cannot compete with consoles unless it is being streamed directly from a 4K powerful 2014 rig pc. The reason why Snapdragon get demonstrated like that is for a purpose and its to trick execs that don't do their homework and don't understand how games were on real time. The more graphics a game has also reduces the frames per second.

And it would not have been possible without this Tegra miracle. :) This chip looks like something that will knock everyone's socks off. We couldn't believe how good it is. As an additional point, when we compiled the code without errors and ironed the glitches in initialization code, as soon as it started the graphics correctly for the first time, it went right through the intro sequence, and into the game. Without any noticeable visual errors. I think I can safely say this is the first time ever. Normally, we'd have a few weeks of unexplainable black screens, inverted colors, garbage in textures, broken shaders, etc, until it looks ok visually. With K1, this just worked.

What you don't understand is frame rate. Those graphics can be produced on a mobile phone but the frame-rate takes a dip as soon as it start to produce textures. Even the link you sent me proves that the frame-rate is taking dips in performance. People don't play games with amazing graphics at 1 frame rate per second. The serious sam was running below 15 frames per second while also taking dips in performance while performing PS2 like graphics. Stop showing single model tech demos and show something running on real time on par with next gen consoles.

while i see what you as saying, but let me pose this Question:

would UbiSoft or any other Game publisher for that matter; would they really need to have that much storage need for a game to be that big for a Mobile Chipset? I mean could they ? Yes , but while i agree with you its very unlikely that still does not take away from the fact the game could be as high Quality as they would like to that of even past the PS3 xbox360 performance now, though spending large Millions on a Mobile game defeats the purpose..lol, its not that the chipset cannot handle the games, its just the point of making a game for mobile is to keep cost's low, not increase them..IE: one of the problems with the playstation Vita and making AAA games for it, it can be real expensive for a AAA game to be made, you can make much more in depth games for the platform, but the cost's are as much as a living room console!which is why would they really ever need to ? Pretty Much No.

Screen size, combined with performance benefits on a lower screen resolution + Screen size = they really would not need to have art Assets as large in requirements for a Game as what you would need for the living room. and with Native dynamic upscaling in pretty much every TV, there would be no real need for it.

the main problem i have with iphones in general is the memory and battery, meaning you can't upgrade them. well you can upgrade the memory but that would mean shelling out another $200 for another phone. my phone, i can just run down to the store and buy a 64g microsd card for less than $30 and call it a day...
my phone is fairly old compared to what's out there currently (or what's coming) but it does everything i need it to do and a lot of things the iphone can't. if i want to play games i can use a nintendo wii pad via blu-tooth if i choose to... it can also run android apps aside from it's own. that being my blackberry z10.... incidently, the blackberry Passport will be out by the end of the year which so far appears to be much better than the current iphone 6, not to mention it can record in 4k.
